I have found the information in this book to be up-to-date and tremendously relevant. The book is well laid-out in outline format with headings in large bold type. AN OUTSTANDING RESOURCE FOR ANY TEACHER.
Excellent text for all phys ed teachers.Review Date: 2005-03-14
In assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this text, probably the drawings are the weakest part, the dotted lines of action are at times quite confusing in the badminton & golf section and there seems to be an overabundance of male representation in most of the sports( but equal in the dance area). I would like to have seen a field hockey unit and some creative dance. But these are the only negative comments in 627 pages. WOW!!!!!!!
The strengths of the book are overwhelming. Ms. Kleinman emphasizes important facets that many teachers overlook.
* More action less oral explanation -too many teachers have Kids sitting listening to far too much info and forget they learn by DOING. She provide many examples of how to keep them moving, giving good hints on how to organize large numbers for maximum participation.
* Motivation is important - the example of using popular videos ( White Knights) for dance was excellent as were other suggestions.
* Using MIMETICS as part of the Warm up was a GREAT idea. It is often done immediately prior to a skill introduction but the thought of using it as a warm up was exciting, so much better than boring Jumping jacks and static stretches.
* The development and progression of skills and strategies were excellent, the integration of skills with mini games is so natural to keep the interest level up. And making adaptations of regular rules to encourage the newly learned skills was clearly highlighted. The division into beg/intermediate/advanced units simply identifies logical progression, too often people teach the same skills year after year.
* Teaching during tournaments is something that many teachers forget. Playing is a learning environment but analysis is essential to embrace an educational setting and Ms. Kleinman offers the teacher areas of focus for games analysis.
* Assessment in schools too often pertains to a statistical evaluation -how many baskets were scored? Whereas this texts provides very specific rubrics that are clearly identified and relate to the process and development of skill including understanding and application of strategy and defense play, something which very few other books have addressed.
* Similarly the provision of a quiz at the end of each unit gives the teacher ideas on how to test cognitive knowledge in practical subjects.
These are all refreshing new additions to texts in the field and this book should be on the desk of every physical education teacher in the country. The addition of a CD ROM which allows teachers to make adjustments to the evaluation and assessment charts, to personalize them for their own classes/students, is an incredible bonus. As is the recognition of modem technology with inclusion of current web sites as extra resources.
Reading through this text made me excited about teaching again and wondering if I had retired too early! Congratulations it is an excellent publication.

Those institutions just starting will benefit from the editorial guidance as well as from the templates. Institutions with existing plans will benefit from benchmarking against the recently introduced NFPA 1600 standards.

A Delightful Little BookReview Date: 1998-04-01
I had no plans to build a Victorian House. I simply am in love with big, old houses. I adore looking at them in person, photographs, or drawings.
The black and white drawings in this slim volume are excellently done and quite detailed. It made me long for more.
For those who are interested, the book also shows floor plans, front and side views of the house, and details regarding the various designs used on doors and windows. It also tells exactly how to build one of these marvelous "cottages," even referring to things past, such as cisterns, and pumps in the kitchen.
The "cottages" are quite large, more what we, nowadays, would think of as mansions. All the houses are at least two stories. They feature such things as dormers and bay windows and porches, all the things that so delight the heart of a lover of Victorian architecture. I know I was delighted with this book.
An excellent window into this eraReview Date: 2001-06-10
The designs depicted seem to represent mostly the Italianate and Second Empire styles of Victorian era architecture. Some of the features readers will see in these pages are Mansard roofs, low-pitched gabled roofs with decorative brackets, bay windows, towers, decorative roof cresting, and covered verandas.
The book also contains pages with fascinating close-up renderings of various design details. This book is an excellent choice for those who have become enchanted by the romance of Victorian home architecture.
