Following the advice of Gwen & Sue helped me turn an idea into something much more. Their advice is practicle, applicable and realistic. The book breaks it all down for you, so you can easily locate the parts most relevant to your individual situation. I recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking of starting a business, or already has a business that needs a new/improved plan. I actually read this book to help me launch a new business, but a lot of the knowledge has translated very well into my existing business.

For people who don't even realize that they need business plans!

This book is a great reference and I found myself searching it while reading about English history. I love English historical fiction and found this book was ideal in helping me visualize actual locations set in novels about English monarchs like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The pictures are gorgeous and the illustrations, maps and descriptions are thorough.

Isobel Kleinman has produced the most comprehensive PE lesson plan book I have ever seen. From novice teachers to the veteran professional this book is packed with useful and informative information on the most common PE sports and activities currently required by national, state and district standards. Ms. Kleinman starts each chapter with reproducible handouts to introduce the sport/activity and allow for exploration beyond the basic info. Each LEVEL intro includes Unit Setup, Safety, Timeline, Assessment, and Additional Resources. Each LESSON includes Performance Goals, Cognitive Goals, Warm-Ups, Motivation, Teaching Sequence and Review. Student materials include Portfolio Checklist, Workout Charts, Logs, Performance Assessment Rubrics, and Quizzes. Comprehensive and complete lesson plans (with illustrations/diagrams) cover beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for an average three-week block of time. The book is divided into a comprehensive Introduction, Fitness, Lifetime Activities, and Team Sports sections. Appendices include Tournament Charts, General Assessment Rubrics and the NY State Physical Fitness Norms. The book comes with a CD ROM.
I have found the information in this book to be up-to-date and tremendously relevant. The book is well laid-out in outline format with headings in large bold type. AN OUTSTANDING RESOURCE FOR ANY TEACHER.

Excellent text for all phys ed teachers.

In assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this text, probably the drawings are the weakest part, the dotted lines of action are at times quite confusing in the badminton & golf section and there seems to be an overabundance of male representation in most of the sports( but equal in the dance area). I would like to have seen a field hockey unit and some creative dance. But these are the only negative comments in 627 pages. WOW!!!!!!!
The strengths of the book are overwhelming. Ms. Kleinman emphasizes important facets that many teachers overlook.
* More action less oral explanation -too many teachers have Kids sitting listening to far too much info and forget they learn by DOING. She provide many examples of how to keep them moving, giving good hints on how to organize large numbers for maximum participation.
* Motivation is important - the example of using popular videos ( White Knights) for dance was excellent as were other suggestions.
* Using MIMETICS as part of the Warm up was a GREAT idea. It is often done immediately prior to a skill introduction but the thought of using it as a warm up was exciting, so much better than boring Jumping jacks and static stretches.
* The development and progression of skills and strategies were excellent, the integration of skills with mini games is so natural to keep the interest level up. And making adaptations of regular rules to encourage the newly learned skills was clearly highlighted. The division into beg/intermediate/advanced units simply identifies logical progression, too often people teach the same skills year after year.
* Teaching during tournaments is something that many teachers forget. Playing is a learning environment but analysis is essential to embrace an educational setting and Ms. Kleinman offers the teacher areas of focus for games analysis.
* Assessment in schools too often pertains to a statistical evaluation -how many baskets were scored? Whereas this texts provides very specific rubrics that are clearly identified and relate to the process and development of skill including understanding and application of strategy and defense play, something which very few other books have addressed.
* Similarly the provision of a quiz at the end of each unit gives the teacher ideas on how to test cognitive knowledge in practical subjects.
These are all refreshing new additions to texts in the field and this book should be on the desk of every physical education teacher in the country. The addition of a CD ROM which allows teachers to make adjustments to the evaluation and assessment charts, to personalize them for their own classes/students, is an incredible bonus. As is the recognition of modem technology with inclusion of current web sites as extra resources.
Reading through this text made me excited about teaching again and wondering if I had retired too early! Congratulations it is an excellent publication.

I was impressed with this author's approach. I know the subject area was lacking adequate coverage especially for students of architecture and/or professionals. The author demonstrates in myriad ways how various architectural illustrations such as axonometrics, perspectives, elevations, sections, plans and details along with text, titles and photographic images can be effectively designed in sheet composition for creative 2-D presentations of remarkable inventiveness. This book offers a superb reference in an area otherwise under-represented in design education. Highly recommended!

Wow! This is a very useful set of materials. As a higher education risk manager, that has participated in the management response to a variety of exigent events and collaborated in development and implementation of crisis and BCP plans on several campuses, I found the templates & supporting documents, including the extensive editorial notes, to be practical and workable in the unique environment of colleges and universities.
Those institutions just starting will benefit from the editorial guidance as well as from the templates. Institutions with existing plans will benefit from benchmarking against the recently introduced NFPA 1600 standards.

A Delightful Little Book
Helpful Votes: 32 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-01
My reason for purchasing Cottage Architecture of Victorian America might be different from others.

I had no plans to build a Victorian House. I simply am in love with big, old houses. I adore looking at them in person, photographs, or drawings.

The black and white drawings in this slim volume are excellently done and quite detailed. It made me long for more.

For those who are interested, the book also shows floor plans, front and side views of the house, and details regarding the various designs used on doors and windows. It also tells exactly how to build one of these marvelous "cottages," even referring to things past, such as cisterns, and pumps in the kitchen.

The "cottages" are quite large, more what we, nowadays, would think of as mansions. All the houses are at least two stories. They feature such things as dormers and bay windows and porches, all the things that so delight the heart of a lover of Victorian architecture. I know I was delighted with this book.

An excellent window into this era

"Cottage Architecture of Victorian America," by E.C. Hussey, is an unabridged republication of "Hussey's National Cottage Architecture," which appeared in 1874. The book contains clear, crisp perspective drawings and floor plans for a number of home designs. The houses range from small cottages to fairly large 5-bedroom homes.

The designs depicted seem to represent mostly the Italianate and Second Empire styles of Victorian era architecture. Some of the features readers will see in these pages are Mansard roofs, low-pitched gabled roofs with decorative brackets, bay windows, towers, decorative roof cresting, and covered verandas.

The book also contains pages with fascinating close-up renderings of various design details. This book is an excellent choice for those who have become enchanted by the romance of Victorian home architecture.

Offering 350 home plans in full color, 250- full-color renderings, tips on design, notes on home decorating, and quick and easy means to order services by phone or online, America, Country & Farmhouse Home Plans fully captures the experience of seasoned architects and designers. Vivid concept sketches, floor layouts, and full-color photographs make abundantly clear exactly the size, appearance, and structure of home one is getting with each plan. The homespun motif of country living reverberates in these dwellings; even a generations-bred city clicker will recognize the quiet, comfortable, practical feel to the design and empathy of each sample building, down to the sloping roofs meant expressly to prevent too much snow from piling up above. America, Country & Farmhouse Home Plans is an enjoyable and useful resource to page through, especially when contemplating decorations or especially architectural designs for one's own rural homestead.

A guide to making a difference in assisting the planet's environmental well-being
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-08
Creating The National Environmental Master Plan--2006 by civil engineer and environmental activist John M. Tettemer is an informed and informative descriptive study of the steps to be taken in a short time if we are to salvage and protect the environment through sound public policy and scientifically appropriate initiatives in reversing the negligent American mentality toward the natural world. Introducing readers to a planned ten-step approach to taking action and pursuing environmental protection goals, Creating The National Environmental Master Plan--2006 comprehensively presents an analysis and "reader friendly" understanding of what might most ably help realize environmental goals through cooperatively developing new national, state, and regional pro-planning practices for precisely mapping the course of future environmental initiatives. Very strongly recommended for environmental activists and policy makers searching for a guide to making a difference in assisting the planet's environmental well-being, Creating The National Environmental Master Plan--2006 is a welcome and core addition to personal, professional, and academic library Environmental Studies reference collections.

You sense Tettemer's credibility as he invites you along on a field trip down a brushy creek or points out drainage features from a helicopter. He's been there and knows what he sees. He combines down-to-earth common sense with a lifetime of practical experience in resolving regional multi-disciplinary problems of water, habitat, pollution control and land use. Always there is tension. Always, when he was invited in to help, there was confrontation. Usually, battle lines had been drawn years before and the factions were solidly entrenched. His specialty is to rise above, take a broader view, and invent a solution that improves the position of each warring group. The groups become cooperators implementing the plan. In this book he applies these experiences to the ensnarling mess of conflicting environmental and land use regulations that confront land developers and governmental regulatory agencies. He's seen it work at the regional level. It's time that elected officials insist on applying his approach at the national level.
