I bought this book for my son 12 year old to compose a career report and so he could understand this area of interest. The writing is clear and simple. Sections of the book need more development and updating. That aside the book provided a clear picture of what is required to start a career and what is possible. If you know little about the industry this is a great place to start. The material is basic but the book does contain good references for follow up and more detailed reading.

I am considering a career in aviation, and Ms. Tarver's book was the perfect place to start. She's realistic, practical and encouraging at the same time. No one should consider a career in aviation before reading this book through at least two times. Thanks for the help, Ms. Tarver.

When Judy Tarver speaks, at least when she speaks about airline pilot careers, the aspiring professional pilot should listen. This "seminar-to-go" book is chock-full of useful information on preparing for a professional pilot career. Judy covers education, building flight time, extracurricular activities, selecting flying jobs, and the importance of record keeping.

This book is FULL of useful information. A must have.

Judy's upfront approach and honest opinion gives her readers an advantage not given by others. Not only does she instruct you on how to become successful in your aviation career, she also helps you to avoid the MANY pitfalls made by other aspiring pilots before you. Also included were valuable references to related services, publications, and other tools used in the airline industry. If you only buy one book about a career in aviation, let it be this one!

Starting with the fundamental questions of whether a prospect can afford to become a professional pilot, and how to plan a pilot's career path from student, to flight instructor, to new hire. Tarver offers suggestions to increase a pilot's chances of getting a flying job.

I have really enjoyed my time reading this book and learning how to journal. We took it and made a "9 cup" weekly Bible Study from it. We use her video along with her book too. It is so helpful to have a visual to go along with the book, and to watch Nicole speak, she is so cute! She uses drama to get her point across. It is the Fresh-Brewed Life for sure. The Lord has more for our lives and He is is the only one that can surely cause your cup to over flow.....grab yourself a cup of fresh brewed coffee and settle in and read this book-it will be worth your time.It is life changing.

What a great book to use to begin a new year! Thanks to a friend who gave this to me for Christmas this year, I am now on my way out of that glum winter depression that always hits after the holidays.

I also realize I've been neglecting areas of my life and spirit, and this practical, well-written guide is cheering me on to a more fulfilled life of the spirit. The author clearly knows how to speak to Christian women who are also "thinking women" in all walks of life. Her reading and movie suggestions are also right on target for her audience. What a gift to read this. I am buying copies for my women friends.

WOW, she understands me..... I'm not alone or Crazy!

Being a Christian all my life, I never realized that there is so much more than saying that little prayer to ask Jesus into my heart. We seem to get content in our "salvation", forgetting to ask God what He desires in our lives. Nicole reveals how to discover the true life God wants for us. To be free in Him, able to take on all life gives for His glory. I have 3 kids under age 6. My worth and effectiveness was diminishing to how clean my surroundings were. This book taught me that we all have a great purpose and only God can make it happen. Learning to confide my thoughts to God and keeping a journal has been a great reward for me. I have read and re-read each chapter in the book several times. Each bringing new light on my heart's condition. Thank you, Nicole, for sharing your cup of life with us.

A Solid Introduction to Bible Study

I have been on something of a quest to find the right book to use in an adult Sunday School class on biblical interpretation and application. While this book still isn't quite perfect, it stands head and shoulders above the other dozen or so books I have read on the topic in the past year. If I could assign it a more exact numerical rating, it would probably be about 4.7 out of 5.

The book is divided into 13 chapters, each ending with 2-4 exercises to allow the reader to practice the material covered in the chapter. The book is organised around an acronym, CAPTOR, which stands for Context, Analysis, Problems, Themes, Obligations, and Reflection. I'm not a big fan of mnemonic acronyms because I often remember the acronym and not what it is intended to stand for, and because adherence to an acronym sometimes necessitates choosing terms that don't exactly fit (for instance, Doriani admits that application would have been a better label than Obligations for that particular section of the book). However, many people find them far more helpful than I do, so I won't deduct any points for that.

Context is explained as both the literary and historical context. The book examines how one goes about understanding and applying each and directs readers to tools that might be helpful (e.g. bible dictionaries).

The section on analysis is divided into two chapters, one on analyzing narrative and the other on analyzing discourse (Doriani's catch all term for poetry, prophetic oracles, wisdom literature, the epistles of the new testament and so on). Initially I suspected that his attempt to abstract all non-narrative into a general category would fail, but he handles it surprisingly well. The few pages on understanding Hebrew poetry need to be greatly expanded. The author does provide several footnote references to Kugel's book for those wishing further study of that topic. One of the appendices also offers some genre specific advice for analysis.

One suspects that the chapter "Solving Problems" exists primarily to get a P into the acronym. Some good advice is offered there, but realistically the step of solving problems, which the author defines as "any term, concept, custom, or teaching that eludes our understanding" fits either into the context phase or the analysis phase depending on what sort of problem it is.

The themes chapter is good, but in my opinion spends too much time on the idea of approaching the bible with a theme in mind, e.g. "What does the bible say about marriage?" and not enough time on how to recognise the themes that are inherent in the bible (covenantal documents, the prophets as prosecutors of covenantal disobedience, &c.). This defect is remedied somewhat in the final chapter where he discusses the redemptive-historical method in the context of reflection.

The section on obligations is the best in the book. The author observes that too often, bible teachers leave their students with nothing but abstractions. He discusses how to derive an application from narrative, how to apply the commands of Scripture that no longer have direct relevance (e.g. parapets around roof tops and goring oxen), and how to derive an application from a text that is strictly theological (e.g. large sections of Paul's epistles).

In the reflection section, he attempts to bring together the previous five steps and discuss the different ways one can faithfully present the same text. That is, how does one distill one's insights about a text into a coherent message that best fits what one's listeners need to hear. Two approaches he suggests are the redemptive historical method (that is, how does this text fit into God's overall plan of redemption) and what he calls the fallen condition focus (FCF) (how does this text address the problems that are inherent in living in a fallen world?)

The imperfections in this book are mostly due to omissions of things that I think are useful. Doriani refers to many works in his endnotes that will fill in these gaps if the reader cares to pursue them. Also, the book is aimed at teachers and preachers rather than individuals. While that isn't a defect, it will mean that I have to do a bit of extra work to use it with a class of laymen.

The other problems are minor, and have more to do with the publisher than the author. For some reason, P&R chooses to use endnotes rather than footnotes - this is very disruptive when you wish to pursue one of the notes. Also, P&R never puts a bibliography in their books anymore - if you want to find the particulars on a book the author refers to, you have to dig through the endnotes to find the first reference to it. Lastly, P&R's bindings are not very good and tend to show wear very easily and very quickly. This book deserves a hardcover edition.

No need to fear Biblical interpretation if you own this book

Doriani has assembled this book with great concern for those who have not had formal Seminary or Bible college training, but who have a strong desire to be involved in the teaching ministry at the local church. I believe--as a formally trained Biblical interpreter--that this book needs to to be in the hands of all those in this category, as well as in the hands of those formally trained! Doriani has carefully communicated all the important "steps" of Biblical interpretation in a manner that is understandable and clear for lay men and women. Don't know Hebrew or Greek but desire to teach the Bible correctly? Buy this book now.

This book is a great read and easy to understand. The book is organized wonderfully with summaries and sections so that the information is easily accessible at a later time. In addition, the CAPTOR method is easy to remember. This book is a must for any minister serious about teaching the word of God. Moreover, this is a great book for those that want to learn how to study the Bible for themselves. If you are sick and tried of shallow Bible studies and sermons this book will give you the tools you need to deepen your knowledge of the Bible and therefore your relationship with Jesus. RLT

I studied through the whole manual and was extremely impressed with how it forces you to consider our lives and practices based upon the Bible. Although seemingly a simple concept, the manual does not rely on conventional wisdom or the prevailing wind, but relies on God's proven principles that He established long ago that are still relevant for today. Not only that, but it distills out the concepts so that anyone can understand and apply them immediately.

Review Date: 2008-07-21
Just like the subtitle says, this manual uses "God's timeless, supra-cultural principles" for planting churches, and teaching existing churches how they should be applying God's Word. There are no fads, gimmicks, catch-phrases (or prayers), or anything that is going to be forgotten and gone in 10 years, just lesson after lesson of rightly dividing God's Word on how churches are supposed to be operating as a body and how the individual believer is to live his life by God's commands. This would be great for any church to go through, because no matter how well you think you're church measures up to God's standard, the lessons in this manual will hammer home what God expects of us and what we need to do to measure up.

At first it seemed like the lessons were going to be really simple and kind of repetitive, but when you actually go through it and start answering the questions and discussing with others you begin to see the plan God has laid out for churches to follow.

This book has definitely helped to shape my life as a believer. Praise God for this book!

This manual is a great study for church building.

This manual is amazing. Our church is currently going through it in an effort to find out how to build a solid, Biblical church in the same manner as the apostles built churches. I know that this manual is transforming churches and missions work in many, many other countries through its simple guidelines of following Scripture closely and cleanly. The main theme of this book is that the gospel message can cross cultures, is timeless and does not need to be changed in any way. God is certainly at work in His church when we choose to turn away from all of the church distractions and simply follow His instructions. To God be the glory.

This will be my second time going through going through the "God's Plan For Church Planting" manual and I must say, it gets better and better! Why? Is it the manual itself? No, It is the effectiveness and simplicity of the material pointing the reader back to the scripture and focusing on the early church - how it started, how it grew, structure, family, how to handle discipline, leadership.......but most importantly, how these supra-cultural, timeless principles mesh with any culture and work effectively today. This will for sure change the way you approach church planting! It might turn you upside down! It certainly has for a lot of people I know who have gone through it.

What is most exciting is to not only see how this is spreading overseas - specifically in SouthEast Asia and India, but how it is starting to spread here in the US.

I encourage you to check out the website www.go-reconcile.org for more information on this ministry.

For all of you web travel fans, the Second Edition of Internet
Travel Planner has been updated with the best and newest web travel sites. As a former travel industry employee, I find this is the most complete and easy-to-read internet book now that all the large travel suppliers and surviving internet travel businesses have improved their online booking sites.

Using Michael Shapiro's book as a guide, a newcomer to researching travel can click through a website with ease. An interesting new appendix was added on digital photography. Do any of us world travelers leave home without a camera! Of course we love finding a good discount and each chapter lists sites known for the best deals. Travel sales are still down and businesses are reducing prices or adding incentives to get customers. I would highly recommend buying the book for yourself or giving it as a gift for the holidays.

I found this book to be both informative and useful even though I had already used the internet for travel purposes. My husband found out about free email accounts and signed up for one within a few minutes (Chapter 14). After reading Shapiro's Internet Travel Planner, I realized that by booking airline tickets on line, I had only begun to scratch the surface of the possibilities for travel planning on line. What I found most useful for both `arm chair travel' and trip planning was Shapiro's chapter on discussion forums and bulletin boards. Search engines are great but I find the results to be catch as catch can. In Chapter 13 I got a clear sense of which sites were worth my time. Shapiro covers everything from frequent flyer miles to vacation package sites, from weather to medicine abroad. The book is easy to use-it offers an index and appendices that allow you to find websites quickly. Read this book even if you wouldn't book a flight or make a reservation on line. The web is too great and too vast a resource to skip and you'll be glad you have this guide as you surf.

The Right Place to Start

Review Date: 2000-04-22
My favorite thing about this book is this. You've got a specific question on your mind about doing something travel-related on the Net. And then you just look in the table of contents, and I swear, Shapiro has covered it to some extent. Like, a dependable site for car rentals, or where to find opinions and reviews from other travelers, or getting train passes, dealing with frequent flier miles...and lots of other stuff.

This book isn't a list, or directory, of travel Web sites. Shapiro picked Web sites he considers to be the strongest ones for each topic. And he goes into the details of what to expect for each one. This helps you decide which site is best for your particular needs, for instance, whether you're seeking a last minute hotel bargain, a night in a B&B or a homestay.

This also means that he's willing to be critical. For example, right now Priceline is quite the rage. In the budget travel section he describes how to get the most out of it while also going over the unsexy fine print... that you can't pick an exact flight time, tickets are non-refundable and you don't earn frequent flier mileage. I don't know about you, but that's the info that nobody ever tells me.

A bonus is the First Person section of various chapters. Basically, Shapiro includes interviews, emails and other stories from folks who've used specific sites. You get to see what worked, what didn't and why -- all with opinions.

Hey all you AOL users: Shapiro's got you covered. In many sections he includes a blip, customized to you, that goes over how you use certain sites specifically on AOL.

I'd say that Internet Travel Planner is especially friendly for someone new to the Net. However, it's also helpful for folks who already know Web travel. I know a decent amount about various travel Web sites, yet I find that Shapiro highlights certain features I didn't realize existed in sites I thought I knew well. And on top of it all, you get some non-Net travel advice, like seven tips for finding cheap airline flights. The stuff you'd otherwise have to find out the hard way.

On top of it all, if you have questions or comments, he leaves his email in the introduction for you to contact him. Now that's service.

A clear explanation why municipal schools will not survive

Lest make things clear form the start, I am from a beautifully country (Chile) that have over 90% of students in voucher schools, some private, some municipal, the proportion in Municipal schools is going down year to year, parents are moving to private-held schools, and municipal students numbers goes down, from overt 75% some years ago to below 50% now, and continues to shrink. It looks like that parents, if they have the possibility; they move to better-performing schools.

The simple power behind the general success of U.S. is the ability (and liberty) of persons to walk-out and obtain the service elsewhere, it puzzled me that a so simple, and sensible, idea has a significant part of the educators against it. When people spoke of liberty, in general, is fine, when people spoke of liberty to choose school is bad.

This is why I bought this book; I like to understand the position of anti-vouchers, maybe I got convinced, but I don't, the book is a compelling list of thinks going bad in municipal school today, and shows a supposed path to improve things, by developing an action plan to have better municipal schools, the tool to convince of the necessity of change is fear, fear that if they don't improve the vouchers are coming!

The book is a starling list of things that make for underperforming municipal schools, from School boards managed by conflicting interest groups, to curricula reform (that that author suggests is not working)and a hope that this time they have a working plan to improve municipal schools, the necessity of making system changes, but the author also recognizes than this are the kind of changes more difficult to obtain. The chapter "Changing the system" start with along list of difficulties to change, including to assess than "Structural changes that is not supported by cultural changes will eventually overwhelmed by the culture" after such strong expression one a the right to think that Mr. Schlechty is on a vain trail, as cultural changes are the most difficult to do.

Well, they have plenty of time to try this path or another or another, in the mean time they will keep children chained to his local municipal school, simply, by negating the possibility that they move with is tax money elsewhere.

Inventing Better Schools provides a rare opportunity for school administrators to to 'look over the shoulder' of a successful practitioner of educational reform.

Schlechty (pronounced Schlek-ty) predicates the teaching program on the belief that it is the teachers' jobs to actually ENGAGE students in meaningful learning. A radical idea!

He states: "Viewing students as a customer places the the school in the position of accepting the proposition that the school's obligation is to invent work sufficiently attractive that the students engarge in it voluntarily. (Coercion may gain compliance, but it does not produce engagement and commitment.

It is the obligation of the school and the teacher to invent work that attracts the attention and compels the energy of students, for it is in inventing products that customers will buy that a customer- focused business creates the conditions of its own survival."

Across the world the public school system is under threat and Phil Schlechty provides the most practical scenario for its survival that I have read.

** We are starting a school administrators' reading group/ discussion forum in our district and this text is our starting point. Over 30 principals nominated to be in this program in two days.

First and foremost this book is so well organized it made it a pleasure to read. Schlechty clearly outlines and summarizes all 12 chapters in the Preface. Don't miss it! This book is not a light topic ~ so focusing the reader where the author was headed was greatly appreciated.

Schlechty claims that American public schools are in urgent need for dramatic improvement or they take the risk of becoming extinct. And the key to improving the schools is the quality of the work students are provided. Students need to be engaged in their learning and their work should reflect relevance to their needs to become socially and academically prepared for the next century. He says all students are entitled to a high quality of education. I couldn't agree more!

Here are two other aspects that I found powerful about this book (besides the organization style). 1) Schlechty clearly states what he perceives the problem is with American public schools and how he came to that conclusion and 2) he then provides the reader with an aggressive cookbook style solution to the problem (the action plan).

The author lives up to the title, Inventing Better Schools An Action Plan for Educational Reform.

I recommend this book to anyone who cares about our children's future: parents, students, educators, administrators, community leaders, superintendents, business leaders, etc. because it takes ALL of US to make the changes needed to Invent Better Schools and this book is a great starting point.

A Must Read for Public School Reformers

Inventing Better Schools, An Action Plan for Educational Reform, by Phillip C. Schlechty, is a must read for those interested in educational reform in the public schools including teachers, administrators, schools boards, and local educational leaders. Any district wishing to make systemic changes may wish to use this book to provide a common starting point for reform dialogue.

Schlechty presents his case as to the urgent need for public school reform and challenges educators to redefine what their role is in providing quality education for students. His two basic tenants for the urgent need for reform is the fear that public education could be lost to a voucher system and the increased need for people to have adaptive skills to be successful in an information based society.

The starting point for educational reform is the basic mission of schooling. Schlechty states, "The aim of schooling is an educated citizenry, but the core business of schooling is engaging students in work that results in their learning what they need to learn to be viewed as well educated in American society (page 31)." In his philosophy, if schools are looked at as a business, students are the primary customers.

Inventing Better Schools emphasizes that reform efforts in the past fail because the changes are not embodied by the whole organization and the culture that surrounds the schools. All stakeholders need to be involved in the reform process. To enable systemic change, four key questions need to be answered before by educational leaders:
1. Why is change needed?
2. What kind of change is needed and what will it mean for us when the change comes about?
3. Is what we are being asked to do really possible? Has it been done before? By whom? Can we see it in practice?
4. How do we do it? What skills do we need and how will they be developed (page 208)?
In the appendix, two districts provide examples of what goals and action plans they have by answering key questions like the ones above.

Take the time to read Inventing Better Schools, An Action Plan for Educational Reform before spending enormous amounts of energy on efforts that may only have limited lasting impact on education. Schlechty sums up his mission when he writes, "...great leaders are needed if real change is to occur. My hope is that this book will find such leaders and that they will find this book useful (page 185)."

A stirring book for those who want to make a difference!

Few authors have been able to write a more practical and informative guide to reforming the American educational system than Phillip Schlecthy. He explains both the postive and negative aspects of education today and provides strategies for redesigning schools to become focused on producing high quality, engaging work for students. Thought-provoking questions are included as tools to help districts transform as well as cases studies which exemplify effective educational reform. Inventing Better Schools is revolutionary, thorough and bound to make an impact on anyone who is serious about revitalizing American schools

While looking into becoming foster parents, I ran across this book. I am so incredibly impressed with this book! The ideas not only make sense, but THEY WORK. Children are our most precious resources and should be treated as such. Life should not be full of punishments no matter how troubled any person is. This should be required for anyone that has or plans to have children. Crisis' are a part of life, and don't have to be life threatening to be life changing. Thank you, Ross!

What a great book! Ross not only tells us how to deal with tough kids, he helps us prevent the situations in the first place. If every kid knew they were special for something, society wouldn't have any troubled kids.

What a wonderful book- a wealth of information and a sensible, progressive way of thinking. This is a book of ideas and strategies, not a fix all. Even though I don't have a child that would be described as "in crisis", I do have three teenagers, and we have occasional "crises"- short lived as they may be. This book is a wonderful help for our usually good/occasionally-not-so-good functioning family. Thanks Ross and Dean for a great reading and educational experience!

I read KIDS IN CRISIS this afternoon and couldn't put it down. As the stay-at-home mom of a four year old and a one year old, I found the principles to be just as useable for me as they are for foster parents struggling with seemingly hardened teenagers. Everywhere I turn (sigh), whether it's church, the pediatrician's office or the playground, I have to dodge popular parenting theories that lopsidedly embolden parents to "reach for a bigger hammer" (a term Ross frequently uses in his book). I know this only intensifies power struggles and disempowers children and young people, stripping them of dignity and worth, and often causing them to either become rageful and destructive or simply emotionally flat and "compliant." So I was excited to read this book which offers a brilliant, sound, tried and true, individualized, paradoxical strategy for parenting every age group: instead of reaching for "a bigger hammer" (read: becoming more punitive and emotionally distant), consider the developmental and temperamental needs of each child and work WITH that rather than against it. Using the analogy of a bank account, Ross encourages parents to make personalized deposits into their chldren's emotional bank accounts (love, compliments, understanding, grace, quality time) before making withdrawals (discipline, correction, requiring behavior change, etc.).

Citing real-life examples from decades of personal experience not only as an RTC/foster agency professional, but also as a parent, Ross will win readers over with his authenticity, expertise and sense of true compassion for even the most troubled youth. Without sounding preachy or clinical, Ross not only lays out sound and balanced theoretical framework (which he calls Love to Nurture), drawing from the developmental theories of Erickson, Piaget & Kohlburg, but he also provides practical tools to help any parent successfully integrate these ideas into everyday life by using the STAR principles. From the expectant mom to the seasoned foster parent who's at a loss with an especially disturbed teenager, every parent can benefit from this fresh approach to parenting challenges.

A few years ago, I sat speechless when a "mentor mom" at my MOPS group spoke and told a room full of young moms (of the 0-5 age group, mind you) to "never let them win." In that same speech, she told these moms to "strap" their one-year olds in time out if they wouldn't stay put. I walked away disturbed, saddened, and sickened that dangerous ideas such as these are being lapped up by desperate parents looking for answers to disciplinary dilemmas. But Ross's book provides a welcome respite from some of these punitive, emotionally bankrupt methods by teaching parents how to cultivate and maintain an actual relationship with their children--no matter how difficult--while optimizing the kids' development of their God-given interests, passions & gifts, leaving kids feeling empowered and motivated to rise to the task of giving their personal best.

As a veteran youthworker of ten years, and the father of three, I was so refreshed to read this practical guide to, not just parenting, but caring for young people. Society has in many ways sytematically abandoned our youth. I throughouly enjoyed this helpful easy read and I think it is a vital and neccesary tool for parents and youth workers alike.

This was required for my psych rotation and initially I almost didn't buy it (many classes have extra texts that you don't really need - I thought this might be one...) However, our professor emphasized that the psych dx in regular nursing care plan books aren't right & don't have all that pertain specifically to psych/mental health and lack correct interventions.

As it turns out, I used this little book significantly more than I used the primary text for the class! It has info on the various psych drugs with indications & things to watch out for, info on appropriate communication styles when dealing with individuals displaying particular behaviours incl. therapeutic communication, descriptions of all the various defense mechanisms etc. It's really worth the $$$.

This is one text I will keep beyond nursing school for easy reference to all things psych.

This book was very helpful...If you have the Mental Health book by Elizabeth Varcarolis 5th edition then this book is good to have. It helps with careplans and it has a lot of the psychiatric meds plus interventions. Example with Lithium; for Bipolar-you want to check serum lithium levels weekly/biweekly during therapy. It gives you interventions and nursing considerations for the drugs. So it does have a lot of information in it. Its small but it is a great book to have for Mental Health.
