I own all of Greg's books and they are all well written, decent reads. There's really nothing earth shattering here though; no new info. It left me wanting more. I won't change any of my tactics based on reading this book. Find a rub line and hang out downwind of it. When the rut kicks in, all bets are off.

Miller has Done it Again

Greg Miller has done it again with his latest book Rub-Line Secrets. Once again he gives the reader insights into big buck behavior that will increase their chance at getting that shot of a lifetime. Miller explored the topic of rublines in his book Aggressive Whitetail Hunting, but delves more deeply into the mystery of rub lines in his latest book.

Back in the early 80's Miller first began to notice that deer rubs were more than just random places where bucks rubed the velvet from their antlers. He began to notice, through countless hours of scouting, observation and hunting, that bucks used rubs to mark travel routes and that you could in fact find rub-lines, or a series of rubs that when connected together with an imaginary line create a line from a definate point A to a definate point B.

Miller describes how, by deciphering rub-lines, you can determine a bucks prefered travel route. He also describes how you can tell which time of day a buck is using a rub line that runs either to or from a feeding area. This is invaluable information for any hunter who wants to increase there chances at taking a quality buck.

In just a few hours of reading you can learn what it took this accomplished hunter years to discover -- rub-lines hold the key to harvesting a trophy whitetail.

Greg Miller's writing is sure to inspire even the most seasoned veterans of the deer woods. Spending the last 20 or more years studying the link between big buck travel patterns and rub-lines, Miller is able to communicate his findings and strategies in a clear, concise manner. With the insights gained from Rub-Line Secrets, hunters will be better able to locate and to analyze rubs left by individual mature bucks. Most importantly, Miller relates effective rub-line hunting strategies to specific time periods throughout the season.

The author does an excelent job of covering all facets of the major shotgun events: Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, and both International trap and skeet. Covers tips for the beginners and for the expert as well. Needs a list of more "common" guns to supliment the listing of the "Top Guns" for each sport. Has improved scores of this reader.

I'm a beginner at trapshooting, and this book has been a great help. I have a much better grasp of shooting techniques and the various clay target games.

The writing is clear and engaging, the book layout is professional, the text is free of misspellings and grammatical errors (other gun books really fall down in that department), and the price is reasonable. The photos were especially helpful to me with regard to gun mount and shooting stance, and the chapter on gun fit is excellent. (Bob Brister's book also has a very useful discussion of stock dimensions and gun fit.)

Well worth the money!

I checked this book out from the library...couldn't put it down! Then I bought it for my own library. The author is very easy to read...in fact, it was as if he was talking to me personally. I learned so much! How to select a guided hunt, reading deer sign and what it means,....the best thing I learned was that the area I hunt has mature bucks! I recommend this book for anyone who hunts deer

This is an excellent book! I bought it as a nice reference to the meat preperations and recipes (because I already do all that stuff myself). The second half of the book was new things for myself to learn about things to do with the deer remains. I will be making soap from the fat from now on, instead of leaving that stuff for the chickadees.
I've been wanting to take up taxidermy and thought this book might help. It goes into some detail (not as detailed as a taxidermy only book), but enough to make me more interested in taxidermy. You can't get into too much detail in only one chapter, but this book does tell enough of the process in one chapter. I'm going to buy some more detailed books on taxidermy, but this book really helped my interest in the subject.
Overall, I would highly recommend this to any, and all deer hunters. You may know how to field dress, butcher, etc, but you may not know everything else you can do. This is a must have, so buy it, you won't regret it.

This book looked thorough, and there are lots of 5-star reviews so I bought it, hoping to learn at least how to field dress a deer, and about how the animal can be used.

It is informative and interesting. Walrod writes well. But, after reading it (and the field dressing chapter several times), I still don't feel that I know how to gut a deer. It lacks the necessary descriptiveness or detail that I was looking for. For example, "...insert the knife at least four inches..." WHERE? In the anus? Four inches from the anus? Two inches? How doesn't that butcher the colon? I was left with as many questions as I had to begin with. The pictures didn't help. They're black & white and not very clear. Not enough either.

It's not without redemption though. I learned about the different cuts of meat, uses for them, etc. That was informative. (There are lots of recipies - but you can just search the internet for recipies.)

Can't help feeling a little let down by this book.

This book pays for itself

I'm a reasonably successful deer hunter and we eat a lot of venison at our house, but I have always paid to have the deer butchered. From now on, I'll be doing it myself the easy way Walrod describes...and that will save me about $50. I've also learned things about aging meat for tenderness, making sausage, and there is some really interesting information about how to improve the flavor of venison. Also how to tan the hide myself, taxidermy, mounting antlers, and antler-craft. Even how to make soap (yes, soap, not soup) from the fat on a deer. This is a good book for any deer hunter.

However, this book is recommended for beginners to intermediate users because they will benefit the most from the content of this book.

I'm new to the sport of Highpower Rifle competition. In fact, I've yet to shoot in a match as I've only gotten truly interested in it a couple of weeks ago when my best friend started to get into the sport. I got this book from amazon and poured through it the past few days.

This is the first and only book I've looked at so far regarding this sport. Overall the book is very informative. It answered a lot of questions I had and opened my eyes about the intricacies of the sport. It helped me to decide that I wanted to get into it. I will get into the arena and participate in what I consider the most intriging sport on the planet.

Though a book full of wisdom and must-knows, it is also somewhat dated. The classifications have changed and there is a growing tendency to use Service Rifles in .223 Rem chambering instead of the .308 or .30-06.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to participate in this sport.

This is a comprehensive guide to the pheasants of the world. Filled with numerous, highly detailed, full color photographs of every species, this is a must have for the pheasant enthusiast or for artist reference.

It's a shame this book is out of print, as used copies can be quite pricey. I paid $135 for mine, however, and found it to be well worth the price.

There are other fine books on pheasants currently available, such as Stephen Armitage's "Extraordinary Pheasants," but nothing comes close to this book in terms of sheer volume and comprehensiveness.

Michael Furtman's book,'Woodland Drummer" is an excellent overview of the Ruffed Grouse. The photographs are worth the price of the book alone.

Mr Furtman gives an overview of the Grouse Family and does a thorough study of the life of the Grouse throughout the year. He covers in detail the courtship, breeding and rearing of the Ruffed Grouse brood along with their diet and habits throughout the cycle of the year.

He gives an excellent job of covering their habitat needs, in diet, and cover requirements that will enable any Ruffed Grouse fanciers to improve habitat on their own property as well as within their local area. This is an invaluable reference on the habitat requirements of the Ruffed Grouse.

The information on the social structure is of particular value to the gamebird breeder as well as the detailed dietary needs.

The book is of value to the casual birder, upland gamebird hunter and gamebird breeder as well as the armchair aviculturist looking for a good read on a fascinating bird.

This is a great basic overview of grouse, grounded in research, not legend. I've been looking for a while for a book about these birds becuase I simply wanted to get some basics about them. As I read Furtman's book, I not only could readily visualize where I could find grouse through the seasons, but I could almost see the woods through the bird's eyes. He really gives you good information that lays out the who, what, when, where, and, most importantly, the why of grouse.

Shooting the Ruger .22 automatic target pistol is widely enjoyed by many of us and this book gives us the details of it's history, development, the many varieties, care and maintenance - including how to break it down in an easy to understand text and much more. It is a must have for all Ruger Standard, MK I and MK II pistol owners. MK III owners will be disappointed if they are looking for information on that model - no mention of it at all. My copy is copyrighted 1988. Provided D. Long is still with us it certainly would be worth his while to update this wonderful book to include the newer model MK IIIs, new ammo available, grips, optics and the list goes on.... Hats off to Duncan Long, a Ruger .22 auto pistol authority, for his most informative writing.

If you are thinking of buying a target pistol, can't decide exactly which to buy, but are considering a Ruger, then read this book. It will make your decision for you.

The book covers the history of Sturm, Ruger & Company, the various models of the .22 automatic pistols, the chronology of their production, and brief descriptions of other firearms developed by the firm. Also covered are care and maintenance of the pistols, including field- and detail-stripping instructions. The book concludes with chapters on available accessories and a survey of ammunition for use with Rugers.

The overall story is one of high quality, accuracy, continuous refinement of design, and innovation in weapons manufacture. Enjoy your new Ruger.

This book is essential for the Ruger semi-auto pistol collector. It only covers the Standard, the MKI, and MKII pistols, but that is all it should cover. The MKIII pistol is not present, nor are the Ruger revolvers or the Ruger 22/45. The book does cover a few Ruger MKII facsimiles and successful gunsmithing trends, as well as proper maintenance and detail stripping.

The book is not a volume worshiping Bill Ruger. Rather it is an information packed publication of the origins and development of the most popular .22 auto-pistol of all time.

For under $12, it's an absolute steal. Buy it.

Shooting Back by Charl van Wyk is a great book. What a testimony; in reading this book, I learned a lot about what God says about self defense and why gun control is so very devastating to a society.
I understand that, in recent months, the author has been given incredible opportunities to speak publicly about reconciliation and forgiveness to the terror organization that committed this atrocity. Amazing!

I have been privileged to meet the author and spend some time with him. Mr. van Wyk is no macho gun-waving shooter. Rather he is a mild-mannered family man who has strong principles and did what he had to do under very unpleasant circumstance. He does not consider himself a "hero" for his actions during the St. James Massacre.

I found him very articulate. He is able to communicate his ideas clearly, both in person and in his writings.

I highly recommend the book "Shooting Back" for every Church leader. It is a "must read" for everyone, whether you use firearms or not.

As a Christian, I am often asked how I can support things such as gun ownership. This book provides a classic example how lethal force can meet God's approval. Charl Van Wyk was in a church service in South Africa when the congregation was attacked by terrorists. Van Wyk was armed with a .38 revolver which he kept with him at all times, and he returned fire, driving the terrorists off. The final toll was 11 dead and 53 wounded. No one knows how many more would have been killed if Van Wyk had not been armed.

Van Wyk then details his own doubts after the fact and how he sought counseling. With his studies in the Bible on the subject of the Christian and self-defense, he presents the case for the biblical foundation, and the distinction between defense and revenge.

The book does its job of presenting the biblical mandate for us to protect the innocent, but I do have to say that I'm knocking off one star because he could have made his case in about half the space.

This book is an excellent answer to those who think a Christian should EVER raise his hand in violence - for any reason whatever. My copy is going to get passed around to a lot of my friends.

I just finished reading The Shooting of Rabbit Wells by William Loizeaux. I finished it in a few hours !! It was of particular interest to me because I grew up in Bernardsville and I knew just about everyone mentioned in the book, especially , the victim, Rabbit..... the book traces his pitiful life from the day he was born and I learned alot about him I never knew from our fleeting friendship. I met Rabbit when he was a Bonnie Brae boy through my boyfriend at the time, who was also on Bonnie Brae. Thirty years later that old boyfriend and I are still friends.....Bernardsville was truly a small quaint town at that time. This incident brought us all to the realization that things were not all flower power and love like we thought. The book really drives that point home in telling about the youth refuge "The Oaken Bucket" in Basking Ridge and how everyone used to cruise and hang out at Woolworth's and the Shop-Rite area. We were a bunch of suburbian hippies just hanging out !! Then the town started to change with outsiders coming in and causing trouble. The incident described in the book changed our innocent lives forever. Many people moved away shortly after that and tried to forget what happened but William Loizeaux didn't and I thank him for that. I would like to be able to talk to William myself and see if he'd like to work on a sequel about the Bernardsville "kids". Many of us are still in touch with each other and have alot to say !!!! Thanks William for a fabulous look into Rabbit's private life and a transport back to the Three Lights Tavern where I spent many a weekend !!!

Lovingly dedicated a wondrous, inventive landmark.

In his ravishing new book, "The Shooting of RabbitWells", author William Loizeaux stuns the reader with hismasterful, risky, and innovative blend of forms that create a stirring recount of a very real tragedy. Any reader who has lived in the last thirty years, will recognize the turning points of our lives, that contributed to the 1973 killing in Bernardsville, New Jersey, of a mixed-race man named Rabbit Wells.

"The Shooting of Rabbit Wells" is a lovingly dedicated, nakedly honest and wondrous, inventive landmark in the art of writing. The author's probing instinct, which includes a notable talent in exploring our innermost, infuses the book with a magic that holds us captive. We reconsider our pasts, futures, wonder at our fortitude, and more, at our determined, unreleasing grip on that which we will not, or cannot, forget.

A reading of this book has the radiance and light of a magnificent, beloved dream. Sometimes one awakens from a vivid dream, astonished, confused, relieved or perhaps disappointed-- that it "was all just a dream". But when real tragedy befalls, we humans share an obverse experience, where oddly, reality seems plainly dream-like. Every moment, detail, association, memory and truth are so unanticipated, so brutally changing, that we never forget, forever reliving and resorting a mull of slow-motion fragments. We stumble and wander as troubled, nomadic philosophers. We sporadically blurt out to anyone who might listen; or perhaps delude ourselves that we've forgotten, that the pain has passed. We wander ever doomed, attempting to piece together what we know is unpieceable, these dear and treasured fragments that we, in one moment, both accept as truth and fail to comprehend.

"The Shooting of Rabbit Wells" deftly leads us backward and forward through time, space, water, earth, and society, driving us down the roads that, to this day, lead us to Rabbit Wells. Loizeaux makes the drive a stimulating, compass-twisting journey.

We come to recognize the deep pride and dedication we feel in the haunting, and daunting, task of simply remembering. It was a joy, honor and privilege to have read this book. And to the author, I am most assuredly, deeply grateful. Bravo.
