This book hasn't updated in a few years, the internet isn't mentioned in it.
I think that a lot of the book could be condensed into fewer pages. All and all for the price, it is a bargain. A lot of useful information.

DATED BUT WORTH READING.

Ayoob explores all facets of self protection and defense. The technical parts of the book are very dated and in need of revision (not Ayoob's fault, things change). Alarm systems, cell phones, handgun design & ammo, locking devices, car alarms, etc. are all far more advanced than in the early 80's when this book was written. Concealed weapon carry laws for law abiding citizens are almost universal now unlike in the 80's (except on the left coast and other bastions of liberal government mistrust of self reliance). The theory parts are still very valid and worth reading. The tactics of avoiding confrontation and the legal and psychological effects of engaging in self defense are mandatory reading. The book is worth buying solely for the theory portions. Ayoob needs to update the book and reissue the book. I would buy the updated version.

This book will give you an important glimpse into the dangers of violent crime present to any civilian and practical and effective countermeasures, running the whole spectrum from passive security like strong locks and doors to active self-defense techniques and responsible use and storage of firearms for personal defense, along with a lot more. For anyone concerned about the safety of themselves and theirs, this book is essential.

Very Comprehensive Overview

Review Date: 2007-09-03
The most comprehensive overview of "self-protection" available. Sections are broken out in a very logical arrangement; understanding the threat, passive safety measures, active measures and what to do after an incident. Not only does Ayoob cover those things you should do (buy good locks) but he also covers those things you should not do (booby traps). He explains the reasons behind his recommendations so you understand the thought process.

As many have said, there is a large amount of dated information in this book. The chapter on telephones is woefully inadequate. Rather quaint to read about somebody recommending touch tone phones because they are the newest advance in technology. The chapters on dogs are very interesting, especially since I am not a "pet person". I'd love to see this section updated to include the proliferation of "pit bulls" in society. It's been a long time since I have seen anyone with a Doberman.

A worthwhile addition to you library. It helps the reader expand their thought process to consider virtually everything in their environment and how it can increase or decrease their level of personal security.

Informative if a bit far-out in places

Some of the advice in this book is a bit far-out. There's a chapter on survivalism in the event of cataclysmic event (did you know you should have a warren of rabbits on hand to breed food for yourself? Never mind that your rabbits will be eating their own weight in grain) and another chapter on maneuvers a would-be victim can supposedly perform in their car to escape danger (if the assailant is kind enough to stand directly in front of your car while you have the ignition on, you can run them over). That being said, some sections like the discussion of window and door locks and structurally-sound designs for the house to resist intruders are really excellent if you're as much of a home security buff as I am. The author goes into great detail about the best types of locks and security systems to buy to keep one's home both safe from potential intruders and yet escapable in case of fire or other emergency. The section on the pros and cons of various types of handguns, probably what makes this book most famous, is also very informative.

This book is IMO the best reference for finding out what a gun is worth. Normally, you can assume that most dealers would add $100 dollars to these prices, just for gouging puposes. The prices in this book are what the guns are really worth. Don't get ripped off by gun sellers, buy this book and save yourself way more than you will pay for it, on the first gun! Knowledge is Power!!!

By the way, I originally tried to buy this book used from another seller on Amazon and a month after I ordered they told me they didn't have any more. I had to contact them, they didn't even bother letting me know. The seller even had good feedback, so feedback sometimes doesn't mean squat! However, I ordered this book new from Amazon and it got here reasonably fast for ground shipping and I am very pleased with the service I got from them (actual communication, what a concept!!). I recommend buying from Amazon because you may end up not getting it and wasting a month worth of time if you try someone else. Buy it, you will be armed with knowledge, no pun intended.

Mike Gould's style of writing brings you right into the book, like you are actually sitting at the kitchen table with him, drinking coffee, and discussing hunting dogs. When he discusses training, it is like Mike is right over your shoulder advising you what to do. He shows the would be trainer that a labrador retriever can become an excellent companion, that will hunt his/her heart out for you. Forget about the e-collars (shock collars), Mike Gould's method of training creates confidence in your lab without all the cruel negative training techniques.

I have got the chance to meet the author myself as for my uncle helped Mike train his dogs and guided bird hunts in Northern Idaho and Colorado. I have got to read all of Mikes books and they are outstanding and can be seen in his view of life and nature. I have worked with a few of Mikes pups and own one today, Spring. All of these dogs are outstanding in attitude and loving passion. Mikes views on training are very humane and done in a loving manner. Mike has profected the use of love to train. I will never train any other way or buy anyone elses pups.

The author clearly loves his work, the dogs and the outdoors and for much of this book we are entertained with his adventures. The rest of the book concentrates (loosely) on training your dog. I found it to lack the detail and layout to use as a training manual. Although it is a fine read I would prefer to see more of a reference manual and read the anectdotes with a cognac at the end of the day.

If you like stories then this is the book for you. Gould does not discuss training until you are half way through the book. The training starts with introducing the dog to the field and the waist cord. You will do better to look elsewhere for more in depth training information, especially if you need to start training at the basic level of come, sit and stay. I would recomend "Game Dog" by Wolters. He is precise and compasionate in his training techniques.

Good, but side tracks some!

I think Mike Gould hits the mark training dog's with out shock collars or harsh discipline. His approach is easy to follow and very informative. His concept of building layers is true to life as well as training gun dog's. The only thing I see wrong with this book is that Mike tells a few to many stories and side tracks during a few training issues. All around this is a pretty solid book that I would recommend to any one who wants to train a hunting dog!

The Truman Show written by Andrew Niccol in 1998 shows the last few days of a reality show. Truman Burbank is the main character. He is the only person in this show who is no actor. Everything around him is fake. Even his hometown Seahaven is only a film studio but Truman doesn't know this. Christof is the director who controls everything. He gives the directions to his parents, his wife and his friend. In these last few days a lot of strange things happen so that Truman may soon find out everything.
Andrew Niccol wants to show the impertinence of the media which do not respect the rights of human beings.
In my opinion the subject of the book is very interesting and it is worth dealing with it. But in this case it is easier to watch the movie because the book is difficult to read because of all the stage directions.

The Truman Show is about Truman Burbank, the main character, and his fake life. He lives in Seahaven an artificial world that has only built for him. When he finds out that he is part of a reality show he wants to escape. Everybody betrayed him even his wife Meryl and his best friend Marlon who are actors like everybody in his world Seahaven.
The author wants to warn people of the danger of the modern media
culture and high technology.
We must be mor critical of the invented world of the television and think about its effect on us.
I like the book because it includes everything: lovestory, friendship, tension... It is dramatic but from time to time also funny.

The Truman Show is a drama with a lot of funny aspects. It deals with a young man whose whole life is documented in a reality show. The reviewers can watch him all day in the whole world.
The duration of the show was for 29 years without bigger problems but one day, Truman, the main character, seems to find out the truth about his life. He notices that everything is artificial and that his whole world is made fake only for him. Christof, the director of the show loses the control over Truman when the latter tries to escape. Christof does everything to stop him and keep him in the town where the Truman Show takes place- Seehaven. The message of the Truman Show is that our society is losing control more and more and that we let ourselves be influenced by the media and TV. We think the book is good, because it shows the problems of our society and what the manipulation of the media could result in. It is represented in a very funny way.

The book "The Truman Show" by Andrew Niccol was written in the 20th century. The story is about a 29 year old man who has been televised every moment of every day. The book is mostly dramatic but sometimes funny. Truman Burbank lives in a small artificall town named "Seaheaven". This world was created by Chrsitof, the director of the reality-show. In this show everyone of his frinds is an actor. The only genuine person is Lauren. He has fallen in love with her.

Imagine you find out that nothing in your life is genuine, you are controlled by others and everythin is filmed by cammeras so that millions can watch you. This is the message of the book. And it should make you think about how the media control our lives.

I like the story because we can identify with Truman and his situation. I recommend the film and the book because sometimes it is quite funny.

My husband and I listened to this on a recent trip and truly enjoyed it and hope to purchase more by the author--my husband and teen son enjoy listening to cd books when on trips and we had been looking for something that we could listen to while our children were in the car. We had borrowed one from the library that had inappropriate language and had to stop listening. I am thankful that there are writers that do have higher standards.

Small town life, lawyer in love, slow pace

This book was listed as a "thriller" when I got it. I could honestly say the last 40 pages fit that description. However, the first 360 pages were a leisurely paced, somewhat corny romance between former high school sweethearts who reunite due to their jobs. I did not sympathize with the main character; he was dull and selfish. For pete's sake, he resented sharing his food with the woman he supposedly was falling for. I did thoroughly enjoy the Hmong janitor who could discern the spirit realm; he was the heart of the book for me. The plot included a very large red herring which seemed obvious to me. All in all, occasional excitement amidst a lot of the lawyer-protagonist's angst and cluelessness. Possibly a turn-on for residents of rural North Carolina where the story is set. 3 stars down the middle.

Review Date: 2006-04-14
I have read Whitlow's book "The List" and found it good, but "The Sacrifice" goes far beyond "The List". "The List" had very little legal/trial content, but "The Sacrifice" is full of it. In my opinion, that makes it more appealing.
This book also has just as much, if not more, Peretti-style Christian content than "The List" has. It is very noticeable from the beginning, and weaves its way throughout the entire book. This helps to make the book a very enjoyable read.
In my opinion, this book is developed very well, however some areas could have been a little more realistic. For example, Kay going to church and immediately hooking up with the pastor and his wife, going out to lunch with them, and hearing the pastor's amazing testimony just seemed a little too convenient. At the same time, I realize that the plot of the story required Kay becoming a Christian and then influencing Scott to do the same, so that is what Whitlow came up with to fill that necessity. Even so, that section of the plot was just a little unbelievable. A few other sections had similar problems, but this was probably the most prominent.
A very good part of the book, in my opinion, was the hidden identity of "the bomber". It kept me guessing through much of the book. I found it interesting how Whitlow dropped clues that seemed to point to Lester being the bomber. At the same time, however, I found other clues that helped me to guess who the real bomber was before his real identity was revealed.
One thing that I found somewhat strange is how Whitlow never actually reveals whether or not Lester is guilty. He just leaves you guessing at the end. I had a few guesses about his involvement as well as the person with him, but they were never confirmed or rejected. The book just leaves you with Lester accepting punishment whether or not he was truly guilty.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It is a very interesting book that really keeps you reading. It is full of sudden twists in the story which help keep the flow from becoming too slow.
As for other reading, Whitlow's book "The List" is good, but not quite as good as "The Sacrifice". Some of Whitlow's content is rather similar to the style of Frank Peretti, and I would recommend Peretti's books. For legal thrillers, the best author I know of is John Grisham. His books are non-Christian, but they are still really good. Read and enjoy.

Suarez is both experienced and opinionated, and this is his best book on using pistols. It is well written, and decently illustrated. The author covers a very wide range of topics, from basics of grip, aiming, loading, etc, to tactical movement in different situations, mental states, anatomy and shot placement, what have you. The book is older than some of the others on the market, and Suarez's own training and practices have moved on (i.e. he no longer insists that larger caliber is better etc). That said, the book is a great starting point from where to learn the basics and then refer to it over time for specific skills and situations. Newer books by Suarez and other authors can then serve to fill in any gaps or for more advanced topics. In my humble opinion this is the most complete and best book by Suarez, and the first one of his you should consider getting.

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning shooting from the ground up. Suarez takes a hard stance on technique and ideology in his first book, however the follow on series hits the mark.

Suarez appears to speak from experience, is definitely a focused shooter, and puts the reader in a frame of mind that is engineered towards combat effectiveness.

Some might find the intensity of attitude off putting but the knowledge provided far out weights the aformentioned intensity.

I would definitely recommend this book, along with several others as an addition to a shooters library.

The author knows his stuff and presents it in a clear, logical manner. He's a regular cop, not some champion marksman that names all sorts of techniques after himself, like the "Suarez Squat Shot", like some other shooting authors do.

The Tactical Rifle and The Tactical Shotgun should also be on your list.

I first read this book in Summer 2006, as a "homework assignment."

It has been on my favorites shelf ever since, and I've lost track of the number of times I've read it.

Col. Cooper (rest in peace) herein sets out a little of everything. Perhaps most importantly, though, is what he addresses up front, which is just as applicable now as it was when he wrote it: Mindset. It has become acceptable, even fashionable, to allow oneself to be victimized. Cooper, right up front, points out that the way to prevent future attacks or affronts against one's self, family, country, property, etc. is to resist, to stand up, to fight back.

Reading this book definitely changed me as an individual.
I heartily recommend it to any and all.

Great look into the making of a real American hero. Well worth the very quick read. Highly recommended.

Ok If you expect a step by step idiot proof guide to making a bow you might be dissipointed but you get all the info needed to craft a bow, it is not intended to be a step by step guide. It gives you a huge amount of info opinions and ideas gathered by a number of very experienced bowyers. I love this book and will use the information inside for a long time. It has all the info required to get you going and when you yourself are a experienced bowyer you will be rereading to dig even further into the layers of information provided. And yes it goes through in detail a number of different designs how to make a bow!!!. With regards to the terms which are not explained GOOGLE it!!. In fact after reading a couple of chapters I was lost with a term being used guess what I reread the beginning of the chapter and it explained it!!. The very character which will lead you to becoming a bowyer is what will lead you drive you to find out the highlighted terms which so many people here have complained to not been given the meanings to.
This is a must have if you are on the way to being a bowyer or are a experienced bowyer.

Great Book

The book not only tells you the best types of bows to design, based on the wood you are using but also gives suggestions at alternative methods for achieving the same result. The authors do not assume that their way is the only way and include tips and ideas from others that they have obtained over the years. This book will certainly get you busy quickly, in your workshop. They also dispell many of the 'sacred cows' in traditional bow making such as the types of wood that are 'the best' and the "best designs". This is a brave move considering that many of these myths have been around for decades but given their experience and years of bow building, there is no doubt that they are speaking with authority and telling you what you should know instead of what they want you to know.

Great book at a great price. You won't regret it and you'll want the next book as you will read through this one in record time.

OK, so I'm itching to get into building my own bows. Step 1, head down to the local bookstore and get this book--I mean, do any kind of search on the subject, and it's the first thing you always find. And now, I've read it. And you know what? I'm even more confused than i was when i started.

Where should i even begin to complain about this $23 I will never get back? Well, let's start at jump street...The first and most glaring problem is, this is NOT an instructional book for the aspiring traditional bowyer, as I thought it might be--and as the back cover led me to believe. Rather, it is more of a sourcebook for those who already have a pretty strong working understanding of how to build bows. This is the book you ought to buy if you've already got a handful of bows under your belt; bows of different types and styles. I could imagine some bearded old Jim Bridger type sitting in his den, reading and re-reading it, with a hundred different bookmarks in it, and about 10 sentences highlighted on every page.

But if you are trying to learn how to build your own bow, and you don't know too much about it--by all means, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. This book uses shop talk about every other sentence, and from page 1, nobody ever bothers to actually define what all this shop-talk actually means. You kind of have to just try and infer from the context very crucial central concepts--like which side of the bow is the back, and which is the belly...or what string follow is, or about a million other things. Case in point, there is a section in the chapter on bow construction (chapter 1) where the author describes a "standard wood bending test." He explains how to put a standardized staff of wood in this little device to test its flexibility characteristics--they even show a picture of the little device (which you are to build yourself for this purpose)--but he NEVER ACTUALLY EXPLAINS HOW to build the device. G

All I'm left with, after reading this junk, is the hope that someday, after i read a few better books on the subject, and build a dozen or so bows of my own--well someday this book may be handy. As for now, if the power goes out and i need something to burn for heat, this is it. I just sit and scratch my head as i leaf through the pages, thinking, Oh that might make sense, if i knew what this word meant. Or, wow, I know what tillering is. I wish this damn piece of crap called THE BOWYER'S BIBLE actually detailed the process, such that i might actually be able to follow some step by step instructions on how to do so!

I just wonder who edited this book? How does a professional editor not realize that this book creates more questions than it provides answers?

Yikes.

Anyway, not to keep Amazon from getting any new business--if you know how to build a bow, and you want to see some interesting pictures of like 50 different kinds of Northwest Indian patterns you can paint onto your work--or if you feel like looking at pictures of bows some guy made out of junk wood, or reeds, or broken arrows, well this is the book for you!

As for me, the search continues.

One of the best book in the series. The first story is where the captain and TinTin first met. Overall very enjoyable. I read this as a kid, but it was more enjoyable this time around.

Tintin is a great comic book ... funny, witty, adventurous, and with clean language. These are classics! I used to read them growing up in Europe, and I am glad that I can have my children read them too.

A delightful book for readers of all ages

I intentionally got this book for my young niece and nephew. But before I gave it to them, I decided to take a look for myself and see what Tintin's all about. I was amazed by this book! It had me hooked to such an extent that I went and bought another few Tintin books!

This book is for anyone - kids, teens, adults, grandmas! Tintin books are loaded with action and humor on every page.

A great idea for a gift!

Good price but little fun

This is the main problem with all foreign comics: translation. In the original language you get all the word plays and jokes that don't really translate into any other language. Reading it in English doesn't transmit even half of the fun.

Three fantastic Tintin adventures in one

Many of us grew up on Tintin and love them for their great nostalgia value, and reminisces of childhood, as well as the brave values of a simpler, more clarified world of yesteryear.
This volume brings together three of the best loved Tintin classics in one handy volume- and for not much more than the price of one.
They are:

Cigars of the Pharaoh

First published in Le Petit Vingtième between 8/12 1932 and 8/2 1934. The book appeared in 1934 . Redrawn in 1955. It was first published in English in 1971.

A colourful and detailed adventure , Tintin and his dog Snowy meet up with an eccentric Egyptologist on a cruise , taking Tintin on a danger-filled adventure from Egypt to Arabia to India , in a hunt for whoever is behind the mystery of the Cigars of the Pharaoh , he is framed for heroin possesion , caught up in an Arabian war and sentenced to be executed , lost in the desert , locked up in a mental assylum in India , before being led to an international ring of drug trafficers. It is amazing the amount of detail Herge worked into these adventure comics.

Many of us grew up on them and love them for the nostalgia value.
I loved the animation in the underground Pharaoh's tomb, and the incredible dream sequence there.

The Shooting Star

Set in the 1930's, another great Tintin adventure begins in Brussels
Tintin notices that there is an extra star in the Great Bear constellation, that keeps growing bigger. He heads to the Space Observatory where he makes acquaintance with Professor Phostle and also encounters a madman who calls himself Philippulus the prophet. Phostle's prediction of the destruction of the world being imminent turns out to be off the mark, but Tintin joins important expedition to Greenland, to find the new mineral on the asteroid that has crashed into the ocean there, headed by Phostle and under the auspices of the European Foundation for Scientific Research.
A rival expedition financed by Sao Rico businessman Bohlwinkel does all it can to sabotage Tintin and friends, as the good ship Aurora heads out north.
A surreal dreamlike Tintin album with, as usual, lots of exciting colourful detail. Exciting and a lot of fun.
The episode of the anti-semitic stereotype of the international banker Bohlwinkel, Herge insisted was a genuine error with no malicious intent.
and

The Secret of the Unicorn

First published in French in 1943 as The Secret of the Unicorn (Le Secret de la Licorne. An epidemic of wallet snatching in and around Brussels affects the Thom(p)son twins as theylose wallets by the dozen. Meanwhile Tinin sees a curious model ship and decides to buy it for his friend , Captain Haddock , after which he is pestered by dealers to sell it to them.
The Captain unpieces the mystery of the adventures of his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock , who lived in the reign of Charles II , and his battle against the pirates. Meanwhile Titnin finds himself on the wrong side of rogue art thieves , the Bird brothers, and gets kidnapped by them where he does battle with them at their headquarters at Marlinspike Hall.
This is the first in a two part series leading up to Tintin's search for the centuries old lost treasure in Red Rackham's Treasure. As usual , full of adventure and fun-filled confusion, not to mention the historical flashbacks to the escapades of Sir Francis Haddock and the villainous pirate chief , Red Rackham.

This book was written with the urban dog owner who would like to use their spaniel for hunting or who wishes to use their dog in field tests. Perfect for our little compact breed. Most cocker spaniel owners because of the cocker size do reside in an urban setting. Anthony Roettger is an accomplished professional trainer. Owner of Roettger Ridge Kennel and training facility. He has put many field titles on dogs and has trained other handlers and thier dogs to do the same. Benjamin ("Chip") H. Schleider, an amateur dog trainer, is an aerospace executive and retired army lieutenant who years ago wanted to get back into hunting with dogs. Living in an urban setting Chip wasn't quite sure how. He found a true asset in Anthony and Roettger Ridge Kennel. Together Tony and Chip have developed a program. Chip too has successfully put titles on his dogs. This book was written for people who live in an urban setting, have little working dog training experience, and seek to hunt with or gain hunt test titles with their flushing dogs. It has a very easy to follow format. Urban Gun Dog Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field is a great resource for any level of training.

Great place to start training your puppy.

I am 21 and have been hunting since early in life. I finally have the space and got my first hunting dog, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I have had other dogs, and have been successful in basic obedience, but wanted a book to help me along with training this pup. I am wanting to train him as a flushing dog for pheasant season and a basic retriever for dove season. Chester is now 11 weeks, and even though it is too early to tell what type of dog he will be, this book has given me confidence in what I am doing for his training at this early age. He is doing great in my eyes, and we are making great progress in early stages of obedience training. This book takes you from basic obedience, to basic bird dog training, on to more advanced training to polish your dog into whatever you want him to be. I enjoyed reading the book, and am looking forward to running more of the drills as Chester gets older. Its great to read a book that doesn't assume that we all have birds to use, and acres and acres of fields to go to whenever we want. We live in a small town, and I was raised in the country so its not like I can't go home on weekends to train, but the simple and quick drills that this book describes that you can do at home make complete sense to me, and I have confidence that Chester will benefit greatly from them if I do my part. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good bird dog, and loving companion.

Great book for urban owners

I believe the author hit a need that has been overlooked in many other books. Not everyone has the fields and equipment readily available to teach their dog how to flush and retreive like the pros do it. He also makes an excellent point that many gun dogs live in urban homes and must have the training needed to meet people politely and walk well on a leash, not just hunt birds. He does a good step-by-step instructions with tips for finding ways to expose your dog to the sounds and enviroment of hunting in an urban setting. I've used several of his ideas with my Springer Spaniel and she has responded extremely well.

Highly recommended, a must read for spaniel lovers

Tony and Chip have taken the time to de-mistify the training experience for the avarage hunter and flushing dog lover. From the obediance basics through steadying, retrieving, blinds, gone-aways and the always difficult "back" command, the material is loaded with fabulous tips to make you successful. The technique to "not looking the dogs in the eyes when delivering to hand" was worth the price of the book by itself. Working on steadying the dog by throwing the dummy over your shoulder is another example of professional technique spelled out for home trainers. Lastly, when to get professional help and how to avoid the e-collar craze are excellent common sense sections of this fine book. You may not train a field trial champion, but the potential is here to produce a master hunter.
