The definitive work on the subject.

This is a fascinating book. If there is anything you ever wanted to know about the Red-tailed Hawk you are very likely to find it right here. The author is clearly a very experienced falconer but, more importantly, she posses two qualities that are essential - and are often lacking in other works. Firstly, she is without doubt a very knowledgeable person when to comes to the subject of the Red-tailed Hawk. Secondly, she also has an understanding of the bird which is rarely encountered.

Unlike other books with their somewhat predictable routines of; Housing, flying, feeding, breeding, prey and hunting formats, this book goes much deeper. Beginning with the species, we get to know all there is to know about the bird itself. Then go on to the various sub-species covering 14 recognised and one newly proposed candidate. Then the subject is widened to include the "world" of this magnificent bird.

Now that we have learned so much, it is not until page 155, that we finally encounter the subjects of; Equipment, basic training, hunting, health, mating and so forth. The book concludes with; An address list of useful organisations, glossary, appendix and bibliography.

Not only is this a complete work on a single species - and beautifully illustrated throughout, I would suggest it is compulsory reading for any person who either keeps, or is thinking of keeping, one of these birds and I congratulate the author on a job well done.

Forget Juno. If you want to read a crackling dark comedy, The Savages is the script for you. Tamara Jenkins script reads like a classic (which the film IS).

Rare intelligence on youth violence issues
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-28
This book is an absolute gem for anyone who believes there must be a missing "educational" role for schools to help students avoid violence! I'm grateful for this probing collection of articles that focus on what isn't working as schools react with more repressive campus measures and stiffer youth punishment in trying to head off student violence against their peers. I've been searching for a more appropriate and effective preventive role for schools over the past six years. This powerful compilation of articles is a unique resource for educating school administrators, teachers, teens and their parents about the failure of our schools to help adolescents deal with emotional pain before it is transformed into anger or blind revenge. My book was published the same year as this splendid compilation of valuable perspectives gathered by Denise Bonilla. My only regret is that the definition of youth violence used in selecting articles did not include "self-destructive behavior," which is a far more prevalent problem for perpetrators of school violence. (As several articles suggest, school shooters also want to end their pain, by ending their life. They choose to go out in a blaze of bullets and bombs.)
As an emotional health educator currently helping schools to develop and utilize programs focusing on the underlying emotional causes of both harmful behavior toward others and one's self, I deeply appreciate this provocative collection of articles. In the context of 911, these inquiries into the issue of school violence today also help explain the tragic rise of indiscriminate violence by suicidal terrorists. Both perpetrators of school mass violence, and suicidal terrorists want to inflict as much pain on as many people as possible. Perhaps, after reading this book, we can begin to understand that only by helping our youth to deal safely with their unavoidable, everyday emotional wounds can they begin to heal the sores of rage that threaten to tear apart their lives, our country and the world.

For the beginning trap shooter

This book was recommended by my shooting pro. I independently picked up Russell's book for improving scores. Russell's book assumes that more is known about trap shooting than the beginner shooter may. It has more than the beginning shooter can assimilate.

Missledine's book is simply written and easy to understand for a new shooter. It covers "just the basics" and allows a new shooter to gain confidence as they are learning. There are sections that I re-read the day before going out to practice. I recommend it to all new shooters.

Secrets to Shooting

Lucky McDaniel's final published book.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-29
Technical work by Lucky McDaniel and student Bill Reece puts in laymen's terms a guide for improving shooting techniques.

Chapters include:
1. Basic Training: BB Aerial Target
2. Aerial .22 Rifle and Shotgun Shooting
3. Still Targets---Ground BB
4. Still Rifle and Shotgun Shooting
5. Pistol Training - Aerial and Ground BB
6. Quick Draw and Aerial Pistol Shooting
7. Hip Shooting
8. Instinct Putting (Golf)

McDaniel lays out the basics and provides many photos to illustrate the point being discussed. I especially like the fact that he covers handgun work in addition to the long gun work introduced in his book "Instinct Shooting." This is a fine addition to any sportsman's library.
