gritty neighborhood police procedural

Review Date: 2006-02-04
Four years ago Brian Wilkey raped a preadolescent, but was freed by an activist liberal judge on a technicality. This case motivated Mike Romano to become a New York cop because he wants to put away the animals.

He becomes upset to learn that a child molester raped a little girl in his neighborhood in Queens, but got away with the odious crime. Mike also learns that a beat cop rarely works predatory sex crime cases though this particular one haunts him as it reminds him of why he became a cop. Though he knows he should not investigate, he begins to notice the department is loaded with corruption starting near the top with deputy inspector Bryan who is too busy to seek out a predator. Thus Mike begins to search for clues to identify the pedophile before this animal harms other children.

Fans of gritty neighborhood police procedurals will appreciate this tense cat, cat, and mouse thriller though it is biased against activist liberal judges but ignores conservatives (i.e., the severely burned woman in Maryland) and Judge Breyer's writing that judges actively judge or else allow a computer to rule. Brian is a heroic Blue Knight who wants to keep the streets cleaned of the predators that at times seem to lock away the law abiding citizens in their "prison" homes. His courage and obstinate determination to stop the child rapist turns him into an avenging ANGEL WITH A GUN and makes for an exhilarating action-packed tale as he tries to follow official procedure, which is frustrating and not often easy.

This book was fast-paced (I was halfway through before I even realized it), and full of sarcastic humor aimed at just about every authority figure around. I wasn't sure what to think about the title, but it does all ultimately tie together. I highly recommend it.

Great story, keeps you completely engaged.

God, Guns and the Perfect Chicken Fried Steak is a really good read -- fast-paced, excellent dialogue, a main character who is easy to understand and connect with, and a pretty darn surprising twist at the end. The author knows his stuff, whether he's writing about his time as a sniper or his vocation as a preacher/missionary, but his depth really shows through when he shares his ponderous theological quandry with the reader. One can only imagine the roads that led a devout little Catholic boy, growing up in a small Texas town, into a sniper's unit of the Army and then to a missionary calling. To confront so many questions in the course of solving the mystery of his beliefs, and to do so without sacrificing the pace of this well-written book, is impressive; to weave romance, hypocritical preachers and corrupt politicians into the mix is downright entertaining. Anyone who lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will recognize people and places, but the book's a super read for every adult reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book is not a passive read. If your are a local business owner or you're thinking of starting a local business, this book will help you go through the challenging aspects that every business owner should consider. Within the chapters are general ideas of how to best achieve your goals in the different areas of business ownership. Also provided are numerous examples of actual accounts from businesses trying different strategies and how it turned out for them - the good and the bad. I highly suggest this book as it will have you thinking about all the solutions available to helping your business thrive in a very community-friendly kind of way.

An excellent and valuable guide for anyone who wants to start a local business, or for those of us who are looking for ways to bring homegrown businesses back to our neighborhoods. Using examples of successful entrepreneurs, including, thankfully, minority entrepreneurs, Mr. Hammel and Mr. Denhart provide step-by-step instructions on how we can bring back and sustain community enterprises or, at the very least, compete successfully alongside the cookie-cutter companies that are ripping the heart out of our cities and towns.

Dramatic Images of the Pacific Air War!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-24
Air combat is inherently dramatic. Images of opposing aircraft diving at each other, their guns spitting out tracer shells, are the stuff of legend. Fortunately some of those fascinating images were caught on film by various PTO fliers and the result is GUN CAMERA PACIFIC, an adrenaline junkie's dream.

First off the bat, the "Gun Camera" title is a bit misleading. Many of the over 170 photos found in the book aren't gun camera stills but photos taken from various aircraft on different missions along with ground shots. Regardless of the title, the reader is treated to an awesome collection of scenes: Bettys going down in flames, destroyers being hammered by B-25s, rescues of downed aviators, Zeros closing in on B-24s, A-20s being downed by AAA, crashlanded aircraft, bridge strikes, air-to-air bombings, kamizake attacks on U.S. ships, deck crashes on aircraft carriers and so on. While the gun camera photos - which include some multiple sequence shots - are the most riveting, some of the other photos rival them for drama. MBI Publishing used quality paper stock so overall photo reproduction is good.

Though some photos have been published previously, the book brings them all together in a nice, inexpensive ($24.95) package. This book is sure to please air war buffs.

The pictures are well placed and the lengthy captions are well worded. Some pages contain sequential shots of ships or aircraft being attacked, which is a bonus. It also illustrates that, while these aircraft and ships were beautiful creations of a bygone era, they were still instruments of death and destruction.

Articles on the Controversy
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-14
This book contains various articles that deal with the natural right to keep and bear arms, for and against. You can read this book to educate yourself on opposing viewpoints. They date from the 1970s and 1980s, but their arguments are still valid. Since then 33 of the 48 states have passed "right to carry" laws. South Dakota and Vermont have virtually no gun controls; you can compare their crime and violence to areas with strict gun controls. But owner-operated small businesses overwhelmingly predominate: no powerful corporations to restrict the rights of the people.

Gun control goes back thousands of years: the aristocracy has always sought to disarm the common people the better to exploit them. Aristotle's Politics explains how democracy came to Greece once the common people were armed. Nineteenth century America was well armed. The Sullivan Law meant a citizen must prove a "reasonable need" to own and carry a handgun; the ordinary citizen is always rejected (unless they know somebody). The law disarmed the people, and was followed by increased crime and violence. Organized crime became more powerful after the people were disarmed. An armed militia of citizens could quickly put an end to them.

Low violence rates in Europe preceded their gun laws. After gun laws were passed in America crime rates grew. Recent reports say crime rates skyrocketed after Gt. Britain confiscated all guns. When will they ever learn?

Chapter 13 is from the 'New England Journal of Medicine' of June 12, 1986 by Arthur L. Kellermann and Donald T. Reay. No information is given on their backgrounds. From other sources you will learn that Kellermann was at John Hopkins University when he wrote this article, and later left to go to Emory University.

The medical examiner of Kings County WA investigated 743 deaths from firearms. The results were 84% suicides, 13% homicides, and 3% accidents. From the percentages of victims (family, friends, and strangers) Kellermann concocted his statistic of a gun being 43 times more likely to kill a family member than an intruder. This statistic was heavily publicized in the press. There are five things wrong with this article.

1) It did not report on deaths in homes without any gun as a control. This is not scientific! Reports from other sources say a family member is 99 times more likely to be killed in a gun-free home than an intruder. Kellermann's statistics are flawed by design.

2) The suicide rate is lower and the murder rate is higher in America; suicide rates are higher and the murder rate is lower in countries that ban private ownership of guns (see Chapter 13). The total of suicides and murders is the rate of violent deaths; this provides a comparison. Most suicides occur in the home, so much so that the phrase "died at home" is a euphemism in obituary columns. A death in the home is much more likely for a family member than a stranger. America's high rate of gun ownership prevents home invasion crimes common to England and Europe.

3) Most assaults and murders occur between people who are known to each other. This makes homes potentially more dangerous that streets or shopping malls. The exception is for illegal activities; just read your daily newspaper. Children are always much safer in school than at home or in their neighborhood.

4) Another truth is that medical journals require payment to publish articles. It is another form of advertising or opinion molding. What millionaire's "foundation grant" was paying Kellermann to create his biased report?

5) Nothing in life is guaranteed, neither safety or liberty. Chapter 13 provides a comparison for violent deaths, but omits statistics for South American countries which have a similar colonial history. Isn't it true that countries that ban citizens from owning guns also oppress their citizens in other ways? You can look that up in a history book, or your newspaper.

Essential essays on both sides of the gun control debate
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-17
Although already a bit dated (this book was published in 1990), this collection of essays contains many of the classics in the gun control debate including Sanford Levinson's classic "The Embarrassing Second Amendment" as well as the infamous "43-to-1" study by Arthur Kellerman. Of interest is the manner in which essays were collected for this volume. Nisbet contacted the two major lobbying organizations, HCI and NRA, and asked them to recommend articles and essays that best put forth their respective positions. Using that as a base, Nisbet narrowed the selection down based on his own research, reading and conversation with the experts.

The resulting collection is telling. If the best that the gun control advocates could muster is the ingeniously specious 43-to-1 study, then they've lost the debate. It's also interesting to note that almost none of the pro-control articles were published in criminological or law journals but instead were published in pro-control public health journals like NEJM or JAMA.

The pro-gun side fairs much better. There are many excellent essays by such notables as Gary Kleck and Don Kates, Jr. Kleck, Kates and others skillfully dissect the poor arguments of the pro-control authors.

No matter what your position is on gun control, this book is a must-have for your collection if you are going to try and debate this issue intelligently.

No one writes like Charley Waterman, and bird dogs are a subject that he knows well. This is not an instruction manual, per se, but you'll learn a great deal and have a laugh or two.

Unlike many writers on the subject of bird dogs, Waterman avoids maudlin sentiment. A big relief, since we do not need guidance in how to love and mourn our dogs.

One of the must have books for your hunting library.

If you care about the second amendment and care about the Christian principles upon which this country was founded and if you like fast paced action that will make you think, you need to read Frank Meyer's Gun Rites. This original story creates a fascinating mystery that will make you ponder over our freedoms and our troubled times. Gripping from beginning to end, Gun Rites sets a new standard for Christian literature.

Review Date: 2006-11-17
Meyer has given us a novel which I thought was going to be a cheap (but cleaner!)knock-off of Unintended Consequences, but it took a surprising turn. And then another! It's not the most gripping thriller I've ever read (although it is quite a good read), but it perhaps the most unsual one in that it presents an explanation that most novelists don't get, and don't care about. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but I will say that it will appeal more to the Christian reader than to the secular. Don't think that gives you a clue as to which way things go, because it doesn't. When was the last time you read a novel that left you pondering world affairs, and their relevance to your life?
