Excellent Primer on Self-Defense Protection for the Citizen Soldier!

Review Date: 2008-10-08
This excellent manual gives precise details to American citizens in exercising their 2nd Amendment Civil Rights during a criminal or even terrorist attack. This book is comprehensive and includes information on:
*Regulations
*Shooting Instructions - Beginner to Advanced
*Case Studies about concealed carry action
*Safety Regulations and methods

This book is like a mini-course in and of itself. You can learn about selecting a handgun, the duty of self-defense and also methods of concealing a weapon. In addition, as I teach martial arts, I tell people that the most important weapon is Your Mind. Don't get involved in any dangerous encounters if you can avoid them. Ultimately, the taking of a human life - for people with a conscience - is a life-altering and difficult experience. It can be traumatic because it is a situation that few wish to experience - unless it involves saving your life and your loved ones from criminals.

Another great book by Chris Bard. Remembering that he is from the U.K. and that he moved here many years ago should strike a cord in your thoughts about him and his books. His perspective on guns, gun control, gun rights, concealed carry etc. are open and absolute. He comes from a country where what we take for granted has long been removed from personal rights and where if you defend yourself you end up in prison with longer prison terms than the person(s) who attacked you. This book covers just about every aspect of concealed carry as well as what to do after you have to defend yourself. I couldn't put it down! Highly recommended for all those who believe in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights we "cling to". Not for those who want Obama to lead them into total control and socialism.

I just received this book yesterday and have already read most of it. A very interesting and informative book that is hard to put down. As previous reviewers have written, this is a "must read" for anyone considering a handgun for personal defense. The book I ordered and received is fifth edition, published in 2008, so updated conceal/carry laws for each state are included.

I enjoyed reading this book so much, I have ordered the author's other book, "Thank God I had a Gun."

This book is a must read for all gun owners especially if you are thinking about getting a CCW license. This is also a good book to send to people that are anti-gun. After reading this book the anti-gun people might change their minds about guns. I sent this book to my sister who hates guns.

Personal Stories of World Events

Fascinating stories from this champion Senator and solid family man. Amazing how his 1971 campaign's ideas/platforms are still relevant today. Compelling sections on his private interactions with historic Senators, foreign leaders, troops and Presidents Carter, Reagan, Clinton and W. Bush.

Could be improved stylistically. Jumps around chronologically in parts, and some sections are dry. Also, I wish he'd explained what caused his first wife's tragic car accident (no mention of how it happened, just the aftermath).

Overall a very interesting, timely and quick read.

Puts understanding behind Biden's philosophy. Interesting commentary re what he felt was needed to run for President when he first ran vs Obama's background. Biden has a much better chance of becoming President (his ultimate goal) after serving as VP for 4-8 years & believe this is his plan. Overall good reading and somewhat incitefull--- I would recommend it.

This is a great memoir about Biden's life. He discusses everything from his early days growing up in an Irish Catholic family (and the strong influence of the nuns) to his early adult life, where his first marriage was cut short by the tragic loss of his wife and daughter.

The book is not self-promoting political soliloquy, and is written in an unusually modest and self-reflective tone. You don't get the sense that this book was written as a means to further his political career, but rather that it was a memoir of an ordinary man. I've always respected Biden and I found that this book depend my understanding of him, his character, and his foreign policy acumen.

Not impressive at all, and poorly written

First, the book is poorly written. It wanders endlessly at some points, coasting over spans of years where Biden had very little going on in his personal life or political life. Elements of his personal life are captivating and moving, but for the most part it is just a chronicle of a wealthy man's adventures. World travels, fine parties, elite clubs... stories that just turn me off since I can't relate to that level of wealth or lifestyle. A biography can impress in two ways. One, it can be well written and enjoyable to read for its language. Two, it can relate a story that is inspiring, impressive, and full of accomplishment. This book misses on both accounts. A poorly written book on a wealthy man's career which has had very little impact on America or the world. I would not recommend this to a friend since reading it or relating to his life is painful at times.

only fairly good, could not finish it.

Two Five-star reviews by two absolutely great reviewers (Mr. Bill Emblom, a fellow Yankee fan. His reviews made me add to my list, Ed Barrow: The Bulldog Who Built the Yankees' First Dynastyand a Bobby Kennedy fan (much more than JFK)) The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy and 82 Days That Inspired America. I read books about each of the three oldest Kennedy brothers. The lost prince (died in WWII), JFK and Bobby. Bobby was head and shoulders above and the best of the three. Bobby was the push behind the Civil rights, crime fighting and almost everything else. Ted must have been adopted, I have no respect for him at all. Look at Bill Emblom's 460 reviews, they are very helpful.

Also Mr John Drury convinced me to add to my list, The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York and the Genius of American Life and [[ASIN:0061734950 Faith of My Fathers: A Family Memoir] John McCain]. His 85 reviews are to-the-point and insightful. We need articulate and brief reviewers with integrity like Mr Emblom and Mr Drury to lead us to great books, and honestly state why we should read them.

This was the first time we didn't connect. The two great reviewers have over 550 reviews between them. Strangely, the other 30 Five-star reviews only have 6 other Books, combined in their reviews. How can I trust a Non-reader? Twenty seven of the 30, have no other books reviewed. This doesn't fit. Too many of the reviews are spurious, and they sound like it also. Confirming my reliance on Qualitative not Quantitative reviews. I hope my analysis is of some help. Thank you for leading me to good books.

Great pictures showing the diversity of firearm owners across the country. This is a great book to show your friends if they are of the "all gun owners wear camo and drive pickup trucks" mentality. My only gripe is there are no firearm owners from Illinois in the book, When Illinois suffers from deep-seated stereotypes that law abiding citizens work hard every day to overcome.

Excellent book. This book presents average people from all areas of american culture and their reasons for owning and using firearms. Some for defense, some for hunting, some for target shooting all humans. This isn't a portrait of "crazed madmen" running bazerk with their automatic weapons. They are real people with real interest in firearm ownership. None of which are used for gang violence, street killings or criminal activity. People who are conscience and responsible gun owners. A great book with a very non-biased view of the people and their firearms.

This book gave me hope that all is not lost in America. The people portrayed came from all races, creeds, ages and financial backgrounds. It showed that not all who own firearms are "nuts" and that they have a true understanding of what the Founding Fathers envisioned for their place in society.
Thank you for writing and publishing this book.

Kyle Cassidy got the inspiration for this fascinating book while at his vet's looking through a copy of `Hunting Dogs: a Photographic Tribute'. If Krause could publish that then they might publish his book, which was just an idea at that stage. I was very pleasantly surprised when I first flipped through it because the publishers are known for mostly doing books for collectors and hobbyists which don't have the same design criteria as art photo titles. The book looks the part with one large photo on each right-hand page, printed with 175 screen on matt art paper.

As other reviewers have noted Cassidy pushes no point-of-view with his photos and this, I think, is one of the strengths of the book. Here are average folk in their homes with their pets, books, furniture and guns. I doubt that the photos would have quite the same impact if they were taken outdoors, while the owners were hunting or at a target range because the interiors reflect the personalities of each person and this contributes another strength: these photos are a snapshot of how many Americans lived at the start of a new century.

The photos are taken in a no-nonsense style: no fancy angles, soft-focus or other techniques because it's just not necessary. The people and their homes have enough visual pull to grab you as the pages are turned and a nice extra, on each page facing the photo, are their views on firearms. Another neat idea, in so many of the photos, was to include family pets and Cassidy seems to have captured them as relaxed as their owners.

With 198 impressive photos I thought Armed America worked as a perfect photo book and it could turn out to be a classic as the years go by.

Licensed to Kill : Hired Guns in the War on Terror is a damn good book. It's an unfiltered and unjudgemental look at the security contractors who do security, assault and intelligence work on behalf of governments around the world. If you've heard of companies like Blackwater, DynCorp or Aegis, then by all means, pick up this book.

1. So who are these guys? Who are these guys are all over the news these days, with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Basically, security contractors are highly-trained masters of warfare. They are usually ex-special operators (e.g. Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, Marine Recon) or at the very least, ex-infantrymen or cops in the governmental forces. Some do security detail work for top dogs like Afghan President Hamid Karzai and former Iraq administrator Paul Bremer. Others guard escorts and convoys, and other work as non-official spies.

On one extreme end there is a guy like Billy Waugh, an ex-Green Beret-turned-CIA-turned-contractor. He is extremely experienced, guile and professional. Most of all, he is very patriotic, and his zeal to defend America keeps him going even though he's almost 80.

And just like sports teams, there are the walk-ons. This one guy named Shannon Campbell is the security contractor's answer to Rudy. He's not a veteran of the Special Forces or SAS, but a regular Joe who had a dream of making it. He trained in martial arts and firearms until he could break in to the industry, and he did!

2. And what are these guys like? They are basically just humans, just like us. They just happen to be extremely alpha. Although many media outlets portray them to be these monsters who have no remorse and shoot kids on the streets of Baghdad for fun, Robert Young Pelton does a great job keeping things in perspective. Security contractors have fun; they have camaraderie; they have fear; they worry about family and finances; they surf the web for porn. They are just like guys out there in the regular "world." It's like asking what NBA players are like, or what NFL players are like. Until you've lived in their world, you don't know what it's like. But if you want to know what they are like as human, just look at the people around you.

Of course, with the good and normal, you have the bad and the ugly. Besides the possibility of someone going berserk on some women and children after having seen too much war, you have guys motivated greatly by greed, greed and more greed. On one hand, you have companies like Sandline and Executive Outcomes and guys like Niek du Toit and Timothy Spicer, who scour for unstable nations rich with resources like Equatorial Guinea and Papua New Guinea and try to capture the market - even overthrowing the government is not out of the question. Niek du Toit sits in a Equatorial Guinean jail, and is unlikely to ever see daylight again.

And in a market that is exclusive, secretive and relatively unregulated, you must always watch out for the opportunists, like Jack Idema. Portraying himself as a well-connected and well-informed ex-Special Forces member, Idema scammed journalists, filmmakers and locals in Afghanistan. Like Niek Du Toit, Jack Idema is currently rotting away in an Afghan prison.

3. And what is the future of the private military/security industry? Only God knows, but the faithful founder of Blackwater, Erik Prince, has ambitious dreams. He visions Blackwater fielding a battalion-sized force of security operators with small-arms, heavy weapons and planes, that can be deployed globally on short notice. It may sound bolsterous, but with Blackwater's capital, reach, and track record, Prince's plan is certainly not unrealistic.

Also, with small conflicts popping up everywhere, urbanization, and the rise of mixed martial arts, I can certainly imagine more Shannon Campbells popping up. With more manpower neededm with elite war vets who decide to pass on becoming contractors, and with companies that offer tactical training, it is not unrealistic to envision young males decide to get in shape, learn hand-to-hand and weapons, and join in for some gold and glory.

I don't want to go on forever, but Licensed to Kill : Hired Guns in the War on Terror by Robert Young Pelton was a great read, and I could not put the book down. And I don't think you'd be able to either.

A genuinely fascinating book!

Robert Young Pelton's Licensed to Kill is a witty, provocative, inside look at private security companies and their explosive growth after 9/11. More than simple history or commentary, Mr Pelton explores every aspect of the PSC's involvement in the war on terror, their necessity in the face of large-scale military down-sizing, and role in the future of military conflict. With a keen eye for detail and the cultural sensitivity of a poet, Mr Pelton tells us a story that should be required reading for everyone in the Western world.

I married into an Assyrian family who continues to communicate with trapped family members in Baghdad and those who've made their way over long years to Syria and Jordan in hopes of finding a way out. Mr Pelton doesn't just tell us the stories of the private security operatives, but gives us the impact on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan in ways that only a person of his ability and experience could.

I have a much fuller appreciation for the jobs they do and for theater in which they do it. And coming by that experience was no mean feat. The book deserves an award and its author a medal. If you read no other book on the subject, read this one.

I wanted to learn more about Security contractors after I heard so much about them in the news on Iraq and Afghanistan. I found this book and read it quite quickly for it was very interesting and for the most part worth the money. Robert Pelton has written a engaging investigation where you feel for both the contractors and the opponents against their existence. There is one chapter about a con artist that I felt didn't need to be included in the book but nonetheless I commend Mr Pelton for his good writing ability.

Economist Lott presents storng evidence that gun ownership stops crime. How can this possibly be, asks the left-wingers. Because guns are a deterrent. While people who die from bullet wounds is not to be discounted or disregarded, many critics fail to ask: How many people use a weapon to deter a criminal, save their own lives and stop further criminal tragedy. According to Lott's analysis, guns are used as self-defense over 2 million times per year. That's TWO MILLION TIMES PER YEAR. So millions of people are not raped, assaulted or murdered. In fact, I tell people that guns are a deterrent. Since one can own a weapon in America under the 2nd Amendment Civil Rights, then the criminal must assume that a person might be armed. Hence, deterrence. In Washington D.C., the gun ban on our civil rights has deprive individuals of their own self-defense. As a result, criminals know that they - oh no! - might get shot for their criminal actions. Lott examines a whole host of important issues, including gun-control regulations-assault weapons bans, "one-gun-a-month", right-to-carry laws and more. The left-wing absurdities become apparent: If you create gun free school zones, then law abiding citizens won't bring weapons. But will criminal obey that kind of law? Probably not. Lott uses analysis, graphs and table to support his assertions. A very useful book to understand that your 2nd Amendment Civil Rights have a basis in stopping crime in society.

The title of the book says it all. John Lott then proceeds to prove it. Control freaks, sociopaths, leftists, mama's boys, and girly men will hate this book. So to them I say -- Don't read it since it will only make you angry and force you to look at something from an empirical perspective rather than from your usual emotional perspective.

Thoughtful, intelligent bookworms will love it. This is serious stuff, not much humor here so if your looking for an easy, entertaining read -- look elsewhere. If you want the truth about guns and the people who use them -- this is the book.

It is rather contradictory to attack Dr. Lott who was taught at many academic institutions across the country for being biased when the negative reviewers themselves have a bias as well. That being said, it is almost intellectually dishonest to euphemistically bludgeon Dr. Lott for citing certain statistics when those statistics have yet to be disproved by the world of academia (NOTE). Some statistics are unfounded and not necessary yet some provide a certain insight into the nature of gun laws and their effect on crime rates. It is unfair to only cite outlandish statistics in your review when the valid ones do not appear in review. This, of course, indubitably proves the blind bias of the reviewer. Also, call me a radical but Lott's research methods have been praised by two Nobel prize winning Economists and his work being right wing in nature has made it impossible for him to get a job at a "proven" University. My final question is why do left wing research methods get a pass while right wing research methods are always so psuedo-intellectually scrutanized? A bias against guns perhaps?

NOTE: Though the findings of Lott's first book More Guns, Less Crime have come under fire the more politically correct academics have yet find any flaws in his research. Finally, the American Enterprise Institute is no less credible than the social sciences department at Brown, Cornell, or even Berkeley because the credibility of the peer review is solely based on the bias of the reviewer.

Time well spent.

I have read nearly all Massad Ayoob's books and many of his articles. When I got into guns recently, in particular handguns, I ran across his writings. They changed my life. Not only is he an authority on self defense with and without handguns, his analyses of guns and manufacturers of guns are superb. Anyone looking to learn about modern handgunnery ought to turn to Mas Ayoob's writings. His style is concise yet exploratory; his coverage is complete; his demonstrations and illustrations and/or photos are informative; and his message is clear: handgunnery is a serious subject, one that can take many hours of anyone's time, and it should be analyzed carefully along the way. And, finally, Gun Digest is an authority as well, so this combination of publisher and author is one with which you cannot go wrong.

Gun Digest should have pointed this out when they published the 6th Edition. I am surprised that such a distinguished publisher would resort to this tactic to make a few more bucks.

BOTTLED IN BOND--A COMPENDIUM OF GOLDEN GURU ADVICE

Overall, an excellent cd packed with good solid advice--motivational and concrete practical. BUT the David Hedison intro was a complete waste of time, and had me yelling "Hellllp Meeeee..."
The marketing technique of taking much of the standard golden guru wisdom and spray painting James Bond's image over it, is quite clever. There's not a lot of new stuff here, but all the classic self-help advice is convenient to have in one package.
However, if you are going to call this a James Bond Lifestyle, and give advice of don't drink, don't smoke, don't speed--maybe you are talking the James Bond at his real present age--somewhere in his 90s.
There was a lot more that could have been put in the cds--more specific websites for the kind of stuff that the author recommends you get. Also, there are intelligence related organizations that wannabes can join to rub up their spy image. (I could tell you which ones, but then I'd have to kill you).
Bond, would have been in reality, an intelligence disaster, if he were a case officer. Much too showy, too noticeable. He would be more of the paramilitary type dressed in a tux.
As far as the secret to getting women--watch the films--Bond was charming, but exuded a polite indifference to many of the women--and women HATE indifference--until they are intrigued by it.(Check out Daniel Craig in the train to Montenegro dining car scene in Casino Royale with "the money.")
Spend all your cash on some lady, providing fun travel and entertainment? Sure--AFTER you've gotten to know her, and after you've gotten the sex out of the way, as one of my pals in Denmark used to say. There's plenty of cool stuff to do with the nubile newbies that doesn't cost all that much. (Fashion shows, gallery receptions, trade shows, wine tastings, etc.)
The tips on dressing--YES. Once on a cruise in the Bahamas, I was thinking I couldn't score with a fistful of pardons in a woman's penitentiary, when one night I slipped into a Tux and strutted around the casino, like I belonged there. Scored a home run in less than an hour, and discovered that not all women from Arkansas look like Hillary Clinton. "Fashion helps," as Peter Weller said in "Shadow Hours." (And I look a lot more like Telly Savalas as Blofeld, than I do James Bond). Wanna make your foreign travel even more interesting--contact the trade mission or commercial attache' of the country you want to visit, and get some business leads relevant to your gig before you travel. Not only will you likely get VIP treatment when in country visiting your contacts, you can possibly write off part of the trip on your tax return. Did that when I went to Singapore, and had a grand old time. Anyway, you will enjoy this tape, follow its directions (but caveat credit card spender) and you will benefit. Within 24 hours of listening to the CD, I'm getting results already. Take your gold sovreign and get this program, so Goldfinger won't point a laser beam at your "gun."

so i was already in the mode of a Double 0....buying this CD was all i needed to simply push myself forward into being a Double 0 ( no kills please )...in a way the CD purchase was like M promoting me into double 0 status..listening to it was like i am shifting gears upwards...

Every since i bought the CD set and listened to it, i have already noticed changes in myself. I hit the gym more than usual having lost 10 pounds so far, i have a new 007 watch, no not Omega but a Graham by British masters ( i think each agent should choose their own kind of watch ), i have a gold coin just for that good feeling....etc.

This review might seem juvenile to some readers but you must understand that success is not meant for everyone. You must be a person wanting to want it. badly enough i might add. This CD allowed me to see that and push myself forward into what i knew i always wanted.

I think we all need a little imagination in our lives, makes our days a little more adventurous...

Next year i will vacation at Paradise Island at the Ocean Club ( i already hv their number )...go do some diving, i am tryig to work harder and smarter at work to increase my salary base so i can "maybe" afford an aston martin...its a far fetch goal but not impossible, if anything its so worth the try .. plus other things.

So i hope you will too do something that will improve your life. Remember a lot of people will say you are silly or think you are silly but what YOU think of yourself is more important. i used to always listen to my friends and familly i might add....got me nowhere...so i woke up one day and said i am going to listen to ME....in a year i become the owner of some real estate ( on two continents ), swam with stingrays, started organizing my life together, turned everything into missions, got what i needed from Q branch and already found myself improving etc...

so please dont give up on yourself. You are the best thing that ever happened. And if you have the money to spare, then buy this CD set...its a great motivational tool and maybe the kickstart you need to get up from that couch and do something.

Welcome to double 0. See you in the field. Next year you will find me at the Ocean Club playing cards or drinking a martini, or on the beach..trust me you wont miss that double 0 look...if you do see me, say hello....i would love to meet another double 0.

best...F

This audiobook is not what you might expect. Of course I'm a Bond fan which brought my attention to this in the first place but, Mr. Kyriazi is not telling you to "be" James Bond it's about you, upgrading your lifestyle be it money, dress, girls, overall prosperity using several Bond movie references.
I've listened to it twice in a row on my way to and from work and have actually taken some suggestions I've learned in the "book" and applied to my everyday life.
If you are stuck in a rut and looking for some motivation to "get out" I would suggest getting a copy of this audio book.

I had the book, so I knew about the seriousness of the subject, by a guy that's obviously applied what he is preaching. However, this eight hour marathon of one good idea after another, really took me by surprise. The author's authoritative voice, with support of other actors, made going from one disc to the other a real trip, that seemed to cover every possible way to get ahead imaginable. From now on, I probably won't be satisfied with other self-help audio-books, if they only have one speaker, no effects, or music. This audio-book got me spoiled.

I was already using the ideas from the book, but seems like there's double the info, in the 8 CDs. Anyway, double the energy for sure. I like the way each disc is marked for each topic, and unlike the author figured, I didn't skip to the disc on Bond girls first. I listened from the beginning. I'm not a gambler, but his 'always win in the casino' made sense to me, anyway, fun to hear it. And I'll certainly use valet parking if I go to Vegas, after hearing the funny example of parking yourself with your Bond girl.

David Hedison's introduction surrounded by Bond music really kicks it off. I'm thinking he could do his own motivational book, especially for wannabe actors. But for wannabe Bond's, I guess, this would be the course needed. I give it two thumbs up.

I'd been fortunate enough to find the book and original cassette version of this program on amazon years ago. I listened to the tape so many times while driving that I wore it out. This 8 CD set has a lot more information than the original. You can tell Mr. Kyriazi has continued to learn and practice his techniques.

From the introduction by David Hedison (Felix Leiter in two of the James Bond movies) through the "Clearing the Subconscious Mind" session on the last CD, this set places a powerful set of tools in your hands. Tools you can use to improve your lifestyle.

Since I first listened to Mr. Kyriazi's program, I've upgraded my life signifcantly. I found my "Bond girl," got my first novel published, and drive a new Mustang GT. I don't know if any of these things would have happened if I hadn't discovered (and implemented) these well-thought out and explained techniques. Thanks, Paul!

I can't recommend this strongly enough to anyone who is interested in improving his lifestyle.

The premise was good - female gunfighter goes after father's killers - but you'll have to accept the action with huge bag of salt. Come on, 17 year old female greenhorn gunfighter killing, by my count, 27 men in about 6 months? Why, the writer himself says John Wesley Hardin killed 31 men all his life! A gunfighter who isn't afraid, almost never misses is almost always not very exciting, probably because you know he/she is going to win all the battles. Give me a more realistic hero anytime.

I loved this book!! There are 4 books in all, and this one is the best, though they are all great. A female as the lead hero is a refreshing addition to western literature. Some may find it unbelievable, but I thought it was awesome!! I highly recommend it.

In recent years, Walmart has steadily improved the selection of bad western titles offered on its shelves. Death Rides a Chestnut Mare is definetely the silliest of the Westerns on that shelf. The plot - a 17 yearold girl well endowed with female gifts running around with a binder (oooh, she hates that binder) and a gun, killing about twenty odd men in six months while covering some five thousand miles of travel. For a while, I think Compton flirts with some serious kinky sex - during the first killing she's not wearing pants, having dropped skirt to blind the guy (yep, woman's lib for you), a gratuitious nude scene of Danielle cleaning her gun, and one scene of a naked boy prancing around for Danielle dressed as a man. So, juvenile sexuality, silly plot, unrealistic hero. I give two stars, one for each large, young, nubile breast.

Daniel Strange meets his [end] while riding his chestnut mare on the way to Texas hoping to buy some cattle. He is the best gunsmith in Missouri but his lifeless body is left at the end of a rope, robbing his family of a good husband and father.
... The first of a trilogy, all of them good.

The Art of the Rifle by Jeff Cooper is a very good reference on practical rifle handling and marksmanship. I highly recommend this book. The chapter on the use of the sling made this book worth the (high) purchase price for me.

Col.Cooper has put down to the ages what even the most casual shooter should know. The man has compressed a lifetime of rifle handling, marksmanship, common sense, and pure grade A instruction into a very easy to read and understand book. Here starts the very begining of a first class outdoorsmans library. Jeff Cooper has been there and done that and knows what he is talking about when it comes to proper positions and techniques.I am not to sure that there is another book of this caliber to be had anywhere.

Wonderful stuff by the one of the great teachers of modern personal weaponry, the late Jeff Cooper. 100 pages of no-baloney poop on modern technique in riflery. Many pithy quotes on the subject.
"The posession of a good rifle, as well as the skill to use it well, truely makes a man the monarch of all he surveys. It realizes the dream of the Jovian thunderbolt, and as such is the embodiment of personal power."

Cooper is a gentleman of the old school. Warrior, historian, engineer and philosopher; he was a true national treasure in his day.

Life on Planet Rock Rocks!

Review Date: 2008-08-17
I recently met Lonn Friend, and wanting to know more about him, bought a copy of Planet Rock. I didn't read the hard-edged RIP magazine, which he had been the Editor-In-Chief of during the late 80s early 90s, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that his book covers a wide array of rockers that he has known, from Alice Cooper to Slash, and depicts his experiences with rock stars in a very down-to-earth, honest manner.

Though Lonn seemed to be able to transform into a chameleon and become friends to a plethora of musicians, the downside of being a shape-shifter is that sometimes, you lose who you are in the process. Lonn openly admits this happening to him at times. This made his journey more real, more authentic, and I wished that he had delved deeper into this inner part of his odyssey.

But, most people will pick-up the book wanting to read about rock musicians, and Lonn does give a good encapsulation of his relationships with the stars. Each chapter primarily focuses on one musician or band, and there are some laugh-out-loud moments too. My favorite was Axl Rose's rant about Warren Beatty during a show in France that was being offered to thousands of people in the States via pay-per-view TV and FM radio. What came out of his mouth illustrated just how human (and angry) rock stars can be.

Lonn witnessed the dark and the light within many musicians, and that's what makes Planet Rock so appealing. Rock stars are just like the rest of us, dealing with life's ups and downs, and Lonn Friend wonderfully captures the essence of how their lives touched and intertwined with his own incredible life.

This book is awesome, dude!

I can't even begin to do this book justice. It is an autobiography of former RIP editor Lonn Friend and chronicles not only his adventures with various rock n' roll performers, but his divorce and career struggles. It also serves as a time capsule of America during the late 1980's and early 1990's. I only bought this book to read the chapter about Guns n' Roses, but it is so beautifully and poignantly written, I was hooked! I am going to make all my co-workers read this book.

For those who remember journalist Lonn Friend from Rip magazine and MTV's Headbanger's Ball, this book, an inside account of life in the late 80s-early 90s heyday of hard rock, is a welcome resource.

Friend is first and foremost an aficionado of the music, and his enthusiasm for his work is reflected in his memoir. He's the ultimate rock fan who lives out a rock fan's ultimate dream: he not only gets to see the bands he loves, but he gets paid for it, and he gets to go backstage to boot. Some of the stories he relates are poignant--there's one, for instance, where he attempts to interview a famous guitarist who is completely strung out on heroin. Others are delightful, such as the one where he embarks on a roadtrip with his young daughter, takes her to a Pearl Jam concert and manages to get her home in time for preschool.

Criticisms: I would have loved to read more details on the day-to-day workings of Rip and its demise. Friend mentions the latter only in passing. Some of the chapters also have a bit too much name-dropping: Friend will mention he hung out with so-and-so, but never delves deeper into the meetings or provides any insight. These quibbles are minor, though, and this book really is a wonderful look into life on Planet Rock, from one who was one of its most prominent citizens.

What can a book reviewer say about a memoir written by the editor of RIP magazine and endorsed by Cameron Crowe, Scott Ian, Paul Stanley, Alice Cooper, Lemmy Kilmister, and one of the founders of MTV? Lonn Friend was in the inner circle of Larry and Althea Flynt when he was offered the editorial helm of Flynt Publishing's fledgling rock magazine. For seven years, RIP magazine chronicled the American heavy metal scene as it transformed from the heyday of hair metal to the era of grunge rock.

Friend's memoir marks a critical contribution to the history of heavy metal. It reads like an impeccably verified collection of bar-room tales from a top notch storyteller. The opening chapter alone is worth the paperback cover price - it represents some of the first new material published about Guns N' Roses in the last decade. Lonn Friend greenlighted Guns N Roses' cover shot in 1988, months before Appetite for Destruction went platinum. He cavorted with the band as well (as members of Metallica and Skid Row) well into the Use Your Illusion era. In Life on Planet Rock, Friend reveals for the first time how well he knew of Slash's heroin addiction during their 1990 interview. (Slash himself has now gone on record about the addiction, so Friend was comfortable revealing the whole story.)

Other chapters focus on the legendary antics of Alice Cooper, The Who, KISS, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, and Motley Crue. This book is a Who's Who highlight guide to the brief reign RIP magazine -- only with the wisdom of hindsight and the freedom to tell all! Friend turns highly introspective in the closing chapter, examining his own turbulent relationship with the music industry and rock journalism.
