Finally A Book Devoted To Moose
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-28
I grew up hunting moose in Newfoundland with rifle by driving them to other hunters who lay in wait. I recently switched to solo archery hunting and I wanted to learn more about the other methods to approach my annual moose hunt. There are numerous books out there on deer and elk hunting however information specific to moose hunting is very sparse, to say the least. As such, this book fills a huge gap. I found it to be very informative regardless of your weapon of choice and it specifically covers well the strategies of Calling, Using Decoys and Using Scents to hunt moose. This book will not teach you how to call moose however if you already know how to call then this book will provide you with good information to help you with your calling strategy. One thing in particular that I like about Mr. Kelso's writing is his use of actual hunting scenarios to explain his various strategies. This book is certainly a worthy read. For those that are looking to hunt moose using archery tackle then I would also recommend "The Bowhunter's Field Manual" by Judd Cooney as a good companion to this book as it has an excellent chapter on hunting moose with archery tackle.

Let's be upfront-This isn't the kind of book you're going to sit around and read for relaxation. That said, Kopel has done some valauble and excellent work. He destroy's the myth that the SCOTUS has said little about the right to keep and bear arms, since they haven't taken a straight up Second Amendment case since the 1930s (Miller v US). He shows the many places where the right has been mentioned in other cases, and what the manner in which the right is mentioned means. A large chunk of the book consists of the actual text of many of the cases. Supreme Court opinions are never easy reading, but they're necessary in a scholarly work such as this. Overall, a well researched and valuable book.

A Classic
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-29
Miles Stair's book was published in 1980 making it 28 years old, yet it remains -to me- a timeless classic. The firearms and equipment that Mr. Stair recommends are still sound choices, and would serve anyone with a bent for self-reliance quite well, even with the advent of more "modern" tools, such as the Glock pistol. Some of the suppliers listed are out of business, but most -like RCBS and Lee- are still around, and still producing quality tools and equipment.

The section on reloading is worth the price of the book alone. The book details three levels of equipment, beginning with labor-intensive, inexpensive tools up to the more expensive, faster means of producing your own ammunition. But the real jewel is his system for reloading virtually any pistol or rifle round known using only one of three powders. This is great news for folks aiming to get prepared for a very long period without commercial ammunition. Rather than buying a myriad of powders for different rounds, three powders will cover everything. Now, these may not be absolutely optimal loads, but they are functional.

The good news is that Mr. Stair continues to make the information regarding reloading powders available through his web site. Amazon prohibits URLs in reviews, but suffice it to say a Google search for "End Times Report" will produce the desired URL. Search for "Survival Reloading."

Other chapters in the book provide a similar wealth of practical information. I would venture to say that even experienced survivalists and reloaders would learn at least one new fact. It is a veritable treasure trove for the novice or intermediate prepper or reloader.

It is my fervent hope that Mr. Stair will authorize a reprinting of this valuable information, so a new generation of those concerned with caring for themselves and their loved ones can benefit from his work.

An American in Beirut

Americans often romanticize their old world roots, never having visited the ground abroad it's very easy. Ms. Hachem comes from an old Lebanese family, with property, land and many relatives outside Beirut. Sometime after the end of the Lebanese civil war she returns to rebuild the family mansion. The book is an excellent weaving of personal and family history with the wider, and still very dangerous politics of Lebanon, Syria and Israel. The house was used as a headquarters by the Syrian Army during the civil war, a fact which probably saved it. All in all Ms. Hachem's book is a very illuminating, instructive and sometimes funny examination of the clash of American and Lebanese cultures amid the treacherous currents of Middle Eastern politics.

Texas Men: A Cowboys & Indians Magazine Review, January 2001
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-12
A collection of interviews and photographs of over 180 Texas men, from firemen, to billionaires, the gamut is extensive. The author, Martana, is a sixth-generation Texan, who hangs her hat in Dallas. Each interview has a "Tall Texas Tale" written by a good friend-men and women who are distinguished in their own right. Some of the tall tale writers are President George Bush (for actor Chuck Norris), and Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn (for artist Bill Worrell). Other important Texas men featured include Western wear outfitter Mike Cavender, All-American roper Roy Cooper, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, and Olympic athlete Carl Lewis. Artistic photography by Mikel Wixson captures the ranches, estates, and business empires where these men spend their time away from work. A gem of a coffee table book. -by Kelly Roberts

This reprint of a 1965 NATO AGARDograph title is a monograph summarizing the gas dynamics of high-speed guns, utilizing a gas of low molecular weight at high temperature. Theory and test results are presented. The reader is assumed to be an advanced student in engineering. The fundamental ideas and equations are fully developed. (325 pages) This is a most excellent text. Well laid out and very thorough. The presentation makes no assumptions and lays out all the details (no frustrating hand-waving here) Physics students, engineering students, serious hobbyist, practicing professionals-- you will learn alot from this text and enjoy it at the same time -- I sure did!

Six years ago Sam Court was a happy man, marshall in a small Kansas town. Then his wife died in childbirth and something in him died as well. He rode away from everything, leaving his infant son to be brought up by his wife's parents. Now it is six years later and Sam is riding back home to die, pursued by a ruthless man whose brother Sam killed in a fair fight. Sam is exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, ready to give up everything, even life. He just wants to see his son before he dies. But in response to his father-in-law's fearful request, Sam agrees not to talk to the boy or to let the boy know who his father is. Others do that for him, though, and his son goes into his arms. The town, still cowardly after all this time, both embraces Sam and urges him to leave before it is too late. But Sam is too tired to run. He is comforted by a former "lady of the evening" who is now the town's leading dressmaker. In the end, three people stand with Sam as he faces and defeats his enemy. Sam has come home, to stay, and he is offered his old job as marshall. I've read a couple or three of Patten's books and all have good plots and plenty of action. Good and evil are not clearcut but a little blurred, as they often are in real life. Recommended for all western fans, especially those who are fans of L'Amour and Brand.
