THE SHORT STORY IS A SADLY NEGLECTED LITERARY FORM

This is a very fine collection of short stories, some by well-known authors, some by newcomers to the western genre. As with many of these collections, this book has a theme- in this case the firearms used to subdue the West. In capable hands, the short story is a very effective form, and this is well illustrated in this volume.I recommend it highly.

This is a great book for young readers, filled with adventure and drama. This historical account of one of the less well-known heroic acts of the Revolutionary war should interest many students. Dragging heavy cannon through difficult terrain in winter, Henry Knox delivered the cannon to Boston to break the British blockade. It was a feat of engineering ingenuity by the American Patriots, and makes for a good read. Highly recommended.

As an avid student of the U. S. Civil War in the Southwest, and a frequent visitor to the battlefields and other skirmish sites in the "Territory of New Mexico," I found P G Nagle's work on Guns of Valverde just as riveting as her previous work entitled Glorieta Pass. Ms. Nagle has carefully researched her subject matter as shown by her attention to historical facts and then masterfully woven them into a story bringing this period of time to life. The fact that I'm so familiar with the factual information helped me enjoy both this latest of her works and the previous one tremendously. I was able to absorb more of the fictional account without having to stop to confirm or contest the factual elements. But whether or not the average reader is knowledgeable about the Civil War in New Mexico is unimportant since Ms. Nagle continues to impress me as a superb storyteller.
Ever since The Killer Angels by Shaara and Ulysses by Skimmin were written I have attempted to read more of these historical novels, finding the majority of them to be extremely well written, factual to my satisfaction, and entertaining. Guns of Valverde, like Glorieta Pass, definitely fit into this category. I look forward to Ms. Nagle's sequel entitled Galveston which, I understand, is a work in progress.

Cutting edge story, one of Ralph Cotton's best yet! If this isn't made into a film, Hollywood is missing a great story.

Mr. Pooleman's unbiased work provides an indepth study of the events leading up to and a minute by minute / blow by blow description of the battle between CHESAPEAKE and SHANNON. He also describes in detail the events after the battle including the transit to Halifax.
This is a book that I would definitely put on CNO's required reading list. In addition to its articulate description it provides an excellent study in leadership, training, preparation and readiness albeit that day on the British side.
If Lawrence had survived the battle he would have been court-martialed and shot. He could be considered the U.S. Navy's version of General Custer. But then again on June 1st 1813 the only person who really knew what was on James Lawrence's mind was only Lawrence himself.

This is the second book I read by this author. Like the first book it is full of action, suspense and everything a book needs to grab my attention and keep it. I especailly like these characters, the old priest and how he copes with his problems. The innocent young village girl who the old priest knoews he cannot trust himself with. The author is awesome. I plan on reading all of his books. Keep up the good work Ralph. You have made an old-west fan out of me!

THE SAGA BEGINS WITH SCHRODER GROWING UP ON THE MEXICO-CALIF. BORDER NEAR SAN DIEGO. RUSTLING, BANDITS. ALASKA: HE SPENT A WINTER SNOWED IN WITH JACK LONDON. THEN ON TO CHINA WHERE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 THIS MAN WAS ON ONE LONG ADVENTURE. ITEMS: HIS INTEREST IN THE METEORITE THAT STRUCK SIBERIA AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY (1900) AND THE CURIOUS BEHAVIOR OF THE TIBETAN MONKS, LONG BEFORE METAPHYSICS BECAME FASHIONABLE. HIS CRITICISM OF ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS. HE WORKED FOR THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. IN CHINA AND WENT EVERYWHERE WHEN IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DO SO. THE BOOK COVERS HIS LIFE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 NO DOUBT A LOT MORE HAPPENED TO HIM THAN WAS IN THE BOOK, BECAUSE THE BOOK ONLY COVERED THOSE YEARS AND HE LIVED WELL INTO HIS NINETIES. HE DIED OF INJURIES FROM AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. IF YOU LIKE TRUE NON-STOP ADVENTURE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST.

The quotes from the young males are very powerful and let me as an outsider get a better understanding of how young urban males adapt to their hostile and violent worlds. The book helps to make sense of all that we hear in the news media about urban youth violence. The conflicts that the young men participate in and the ways that they use guns to get status was alarming but understandable in the context of their social worlds. It is a depressing story with much to say about what's wrong with society.

This book truly impressed me. The information is all up to date, in-depth, and accurate. The pictures are in color, the average price of the weapon is included in its statistics, there are cut-aways, and above average amounts of information on the weapons and the companies that produce them. Any serious collector or enthusiast looking for a great referance volume would pick this one up. As a final note, though the title is "Hand Guns" there is a section in the back with the most popular and current sub-machine guns. I believe this was done because Mr. Diez has three books in his personal weaponry series, and wanted to give a wide scope of currently used infantry weapons. These books are entitled "Hand Guns", "Assualt and Precision Weapons", and "Support Weapons and Combat Equipment".

The chapters that reference the impressed service weapons of other countries was very nice as well.
If you are at the least an amatuer historian of WWII and a Collector of Military Rifles..I recommend this text.
