Well researched and considered. Thorough, yet practical and attainable. I appreciated learning about all the different types of root cellars and how to build them. Previous to reading this book, a root cellar to me was and expensive underground project with stairs and cement walls and electricity. Until I can afford that we can inexpensively create/build/dig the other options.

All about root cellars.

I build a root cellar before purchasing this book. In hind sight I probably should have done it the other way around. Anyway, this book gives all the in's and out's about root cellaring, and has been most helpful to me. Since I've read the book I have improved the ventilation in my root cellar. And it has learned me that I should have more than one. There seems to be no easy solution for storing everything together, it's always going to be a compromise. Temperature fluctuations, humidity, combinations of fruits and vegetables that don't like each other, it's a more complex matter then I like it to be. This book gives answers to most questions, and is very good at giving you alternatives when you either don't have the space, the right environment, or the money to get to an optimal situation. Even in less then ideal conditions you can do a lot in terms of storage, and the book is very good to point you in different directions. There is only one topic that I miss in this book. How to create a root cellar when you live in an area with a high ground water table. Not all of us live on hill sides or high in the mountains. In low lying areas you can't just dig and forget about groundwater. It would have been helpfull with a chapter dedicated to this situation. Otherwise, if you want to store fruits and vegetables, highly recommended.

This is exactly what we were looking for so we could build a root cellar and it also gives creative ways to use space you already have. Recipes are included in the back also. If you want to make your garden last through the winter read this book.

I love cookbooks, and I love to cook. I have an extensive library of cookbooks, and this one is absolutely one of the best. The instructions are clear, the food is exquisite, and, above all, this book is a pleasure to read. I love learning the history of the recipes, the anecdotes add to the enjoyment. This is by no means a basic cookbook, it is definitely for the cook who goes beyond the basics, and many of the recipes require a long list of ingredients and lots of time. The results, however, are well worth the effort, and, for those who enjoy cooking, this book is a must.

I used to work in a great italian restaurant. One of the books from the chef's library that stood out was this one. It has great recipes. Very true to the food. Close your eyes. Pick a recipe. Make it and its a hit!
I am one that LOOOOVES to "twik" recipes. With this book, there is no need.

This is a fantastic book. At first glance I set it aside as it looked labor-intensive, but as I tried it out I've had nothing but great results. Most recipies involve a *lot* of overall time and work, especially getting some of the ingredients (hard to find veal neck bones) but so far worth it!

Delicious.

I adore this book. I love sitting down just to read the histories and evolutions of dishes. And I love the actual recipes I've made so far from it.

But most importantly, I've learned not to be afraid to make homemade pastas thanks to Kasper's easy conversational style.

The pasta doughs are simple and forgiving, and the pastas are delicious, filling, and a huge cost and nutrition savings compared to packaged.

If I could give this book 6 stars I would. My children love this book and it is so much fun to read. The story is very interactive as the kids shout out "Salsa!" and "Ole!" etc. I have read this to my own children and groups of children and it never fails to capture everyone's attention (even the adults) and make everyone laugh. I don't think there has been a single time that I have read this book that I was not asked to please read it again, and again, and again..

Chicks and Salsa is a delight! Our little ones loved the story, funny names for familiar southwest food (Quackamole), and especially the refrain: "Olé."

Great gift book! We bought two as gifts for grandchildren, then two more for other friends, and finally one for the kindergarten teacher, along with a grocery gift card, since her classroom's certified for cooking. She loves it too. Chicks & Salsa's so ... "Ooo, la la!"

Every Pig Has His Day: A Very Tasty Book
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-16
A pig can eat only so much slop. Fowl may need to part from their feed. Even a duck might tire of fish.

This is the premise of "Chicks and Salsa," a celebration of culinary diversity in general, salsa in particular. The "salsafication" of the farm animals is the brainchild of a rebellious rooster, although there's a rat (literal, not figurative) who--behind the scenes--supplies the ingredients. The rooster is the face of the salsa revolution, but the rat, lurking stealthily on most pages, is the muscle.

Like a great chef or musician, Aaron Reynolds riffs on salsa within a structured format. AS the zest for salsa spreads from one species to another, the recipes change. The rooster and chickens pick farm fresh (naturally) onions and tomatoes, the ducks dine on cilantro and garlic, and the pigs go for beans and chopped chilis. Paulette Bogan gives these mischievous animals distinctive personalities and emotion. She draws a bored chicken like no one else. A pig turns fier red after eating chilis, while another pig proudly juggles them. Bogan's seems to thrive on low-light scenes; the animals become luminescent, and their glow warms the barn and surrounding farmland. Her shadows and shadings use unusual color combinations, and the fiesta preparations are vivid and rich.

Sadly, the fiesta never takes place, as the humans, who finally wake up and smell the animals' spices, seize all the ingredients for a tamale entree entry at the state fair. The conclusion is a little bit abrupt, but it's clever: The rooster sneaks into the kitchen, and with the rat's help shifts from one cuisine to another, becoming a master at crepes. The fiesta turns into something of a salon, and--zut alors--the animals done "French" clothes, a bit of attitude, and share the hors d'ouevres. "Chicks and Salsa" is delightfully entertaining, with mugging animals and other silly stuff alternating with keenly observed humor. The very talented Bogan gives the reader a visual feast on every page; the animals look as welcoming as teddy bears. 34 pages long, with a book cover that can be made into a poster, and three recipes to try: "Hog Wild Nachos," "Quackamole," and "Rooster's Toasted Salsa."

I thought it very interesting and wasn't really aware of what I was doing to my body. I have since with a couple of my friends revised the way we eat know. No bread (yeast) products have gone past my lips in over a month now. I have also tried different things like seaweed and dulse and just add more protein to my diet. I haven't been able to fit into many things at the beginning of spring/summer but can now. I never feel as full any more and I only eat when hungry not when I just crave something.
thank you so much.

Fat Flush Foods

Classic herbs which help to flush fat are flaxseed oil, anise,
cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, fennel seed, garlic and parsley.
Apple seed vinegar, cranberry , B12 and flaxseed oil help to flush
cholesterol. Lemons act as a detoxifier. Lamb acts to stabilizer
blood sugar, as well as salmon and whey protein.

Other fat flush foods are fresh veggies, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, jicama (potato and apple cross) and cucumber.
The acquisition would be perfect to supplement any formal diet plan.
As such, it would be a good value for the price charged.

I've had this book for almost a year and have absolutely loved it. It has come in really handy at times, especially, the days you crave your Mom's home made food!! This book is different from most others, as the recipes are more for day-to-day cooking and very easy to follow. I was recently on the website for this book and found the cooking demonstrations to be quite helpful.

As someone who doesn't fancy cooking, I approached this book with skepticism. It was after a fight with my cook, when I knew that if I wanted to eat, I had to cook. The first experiment was karhi, and there has been no looking back. Everything that we have cooked has been phenomenal. I do take the credit for it, but in reality it all goes to this book and the precision with which way it has been written. The pictures and easy layout are an added bonus. It won't be long before we've been through every recipe, and then it will be time for vol 2! This book is a must buy.

I have over 10 cookbooks in my pantry that claim to be the 'best' Indian cookbooks around. So, skeptical of adding yet another book to an already overcrowded shelf of unused cookbooks, I made the purchase...mainly becuase the pictures and recipes just looked so delicious...and my strong desire to have good home-made Indian food. When I tried out a recipe...I noticed that the directions were easy to follow and were accurate (in my experience, Indian cookbooks are not accurate about all the ingredients necessary or the amounts or even the preparation times)! To my surprise, my dishes turned out just as the book described (unlike the results I got from some of those other cookbooks in my pantry). This book has given me confidence that I can actually cook Indian food...successfully. I especially like the recommendation at the beginning of the book that tells you the essential spices to have in your pantry. I hope Pushpa Bhargava will consider writing a Vol. 2!

The recipes in this book are very easy to follow. The food comes out so delicious that even seasoned Indian food lovers praise it. The Bhindi Masala recipe is amazing! I had to scout some ingredients in specialty stores (I am a non-Indian Indian food aficionado) - but it was worth it. With the right spices on hand and Mrs. Bhargava's precooked masala in my fridge no guest leaves my house hungry or disappointed. Thank you very much!

Yea, I was very impressed with the entire format and layout and step by step help that this book provides when you want to make your kitchen and your table "Indian". Would HIGHLY recommend if you're at any level of cooking experience with this world of cuisine; from zero to skilled, this handy, complete guide takes the mystery out of preparing it, while leaving the mystery of Indian food for your family and guests to savor. I guess I'm enthusiastic because now I have a cooking book I can recommend without 'reservations'. Dinner, anyone?

It is full of quick, easy, healthy ideas (who would have thought to freeze peanut butter sandwiches, or sneak nutritional yeast into chicken tenders?!). I recommend this to anyone who is looking for healthy meal and snack ideas that families will truly enjoy.

I've looked for this book for years, wanting to read it to my own children. How lucky I am that it has been republished and that I still have children young enough to properly enjoy it, and how sad that my older children missed it when they were in the prime audience age range!

This is a beautiful, thoroughly enchanting story which illustrates how woefully wrong it is to sacrifice the well being of others in striving for your own personal joy and success. I recall how taken I was with the colony of artist mice painting mini masterpieces and the pie making creature, how much I would have wanted them for my own even without the promise of a princess' hand in marriage (or prince's for that matter, though at age six I wasn't interested in either) as a reward. I was awed by Bernard's show of respect for creatures I would have had difficulty recognizing as anything other than toys before learning they had lives and purposes of their own. Some people go through their entire lives without learning that.

I absolutely love this book!

This was, without question, my favorite book from childhood. I lost track of it and have been searching for a replacement for over 10 years now. I haven't had much success. All I'd found were some tattered old copies that were extremely overpriced. When I saw the deal Amazon was offering I couldn't believe it. I bought it immediately and it arrived in mint condition. It took me right back to my younger days and now I'm sharing it with my 8 year old son, who loves it, too. What a fantastic purchase I made with this one. Thank you so much! I would highly recommend this fun and unique story to anyone and everyone! You can't go wrong with this one. :o)

~Diane's Pumpkin Praline Pie (my first, it was awesome!)

Easy As Pie

Review Date: 2008-02-27
Finding a great pie anywhere is extremely difficult. In fact, it is rare that I would even ask for pie as a dessert choice because they are usually not very good. However, my hankering for pie reached a frenzy after watching the movie "Waitress".

For those unfamiliar with that movie, its main character explains her feelings through coming up with creative pies. When the movie's credits began, my longing for pie took hold of me. I was convinced, after many attempts, that there was no really great pie out there, so I decided to make my own.

After a great deal of research, I found this book. It is really outstanding. The writing is fun and easy to read. It is well organized and takes the stress out of baking a pie for a first timer like me. Ken makes it seem so simple that during the past month I have made over 20 pies, ranging from fruit to nut to cream pies. I took a class about baking pies, but it did not hold a candle to Ken's book.

Those twenty pies have mostly been baked for other people. The joy a fresh baked pie gives to someone makes me feel like I am making a difference. People love getting homemade pies, so much so it almost brings them to tears. My husband's co-workers, people at the gym, employees at stores that I frequent, and neighbors have been the beneficiaries of most of them. The reviews have been outstanding! People have said that they are they best pies they've ever eaten. At first I thought they were just being nice, but those platitudes have come from non-pie lovers and even the most finicky eaters. People are so excited about getting pies that I just can't stop making them!

I would like to say that the best place to get a great pie is my house. However, that sounds a little conceited and is not one hundred percent true. The truth is, if you want to have a great pie make one of your own using "Pie: 300 Tried and True Recipes for Delicious Home Made Pie". You will not be disappointed. The only problem is that you might not be able to eat pie at a restaurant again. On the bright side, you will always have something great to bring to a potluck, cook out or give as a gift. Pie really is the best desert out there. It combines all the best of creativity, complexity, and bakery goodness.

Is it time to pity the pie? I think not. It is time to make pie! So "pie it forward"

I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

As both a dog owner and veterinarian by profession, I work in the world of medical science and I live in the world as a devoted dog owner. Therefore, I can truly appreciate the need for Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Although the title might suggest the content is someone trivial, this author has poured her heart, detective skills and keen sense of intuition into real fact finding and honest answers. Her concerns should also be your concerns and her cautions, your yellow flag! In these times we are all bombarded with tons of information and often not enough time to make truly informed decisions. Therefore, I encourage you to let Jan Rasmusen be your guide to bridge the dangerous gap between advances in modern medicine and aggressive marketing campaigns fueled by drug companies to help you decide what is best for the dog in your life.

This book is the epitamy of south Texas history PLUS cuisine. I admit to being biased for more authentic Mexican cooking, thus a big fan of the likes of Diana Kennedy and Ray Bayless's books, but nonetheless my south Texas husband and his family are avid Tex Mex diners. I needed to brush up on the Tex Mex cuisine and came across this little gem, because not only am I a foodie, but I'm also a history buff. Filled with old pictures and history from over a century ago, and finding the recipes to be quite authentic (of what I've seen in south Texas), I couldn't put this book down. This is probably one of the best Tex Mex cookbooks that I have seen, and I have seen plenty. To those that are biased true Mexican cuisine enthusiasts, just know that I am with you in sentiment, but this is still a great read with plenty of recipes that will please our stubborn palates. Enjoy!

I have lived in the southwest for years and enjoy eating all the TEX-MEX food from the western states. This little recipe book give a lot to local food in different regions. The end results of the food I have prepared is very good...sometimes I have had problem finding certain item that the recipe calls for but if you understand Mexican cooking and what goes with what you can find different ingredients to use.

Very good information of the real way it is done and not the new age style of southern cooking . Nice bits of history on Tex-Mex. Recommended addition to your library.

For years I've been looking for this type of book that will give the reader an understanding of the history and background of the blending of Tejano,Texican and Anglo-Texan food and cultures that has produced the wonderful cuisine that we in Texas enjoy today. This cookbook helps with the sharing of this cuisine with everyone else who is not lucky enough to live in Texas and does enjoy Tex-Mex food as much as we do! TexasBill
