IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD A COPY OF THIS BOOK -- BEG A COPY!Review Date: 2004-02-21
But most of all, I am glad I read this book for the hope it gives. If I am ever faced with a desperate situation, Bruce Moody will be there in the back of my mind, coaching. I read this book with a chilly spine, I'll tell you, for the prospect of losing your home and going begging is terrifying. But at the same time I read with a sense of adventure, wonder, and even joy. Joy? Yes, joy. That's where Bruce Moody ultimately takes his readers, straight into the realm of joy, right there in the most unexpected of places, along the roadside. To me, that's the greatest message of the book. It's the treasure buried in the field, and thank you Bruce for digging it up and sharing it with all of us. Congratulations!
Very unusual and extremely powerful, movingReview Date: 2003-11-01
All who have encountered beggars in America should read Mr. Moody's memoir. It makes no difference whether you've agonized over the plight of beggars, as I have, or criticized them for being too picky in their job searches, as I also have. You will find Moody's experiences and soul searching powerful and interesting on several levels.
Moody's memoir takes us into the mind and experiences of an honest senior citizen begging for work to stay afloat. His experience is not the result of a contrived, self-imposed literary or journalistic assignment but instead comes from his struggle to survive and keep his home. Political and intellectual motives can drive authors to concoct or artificially partake of experiences inorder to make points or satisfy intellectual curiosity, but such works lack the deep, poetic soul searching and humor of Moody's work.
His memoir contains much more than temporal descriptions of financial and employment predicaments. It reveals Moody's deepest thoughts of optimism, self-doubt, prejudice, humility, spirituality, pride, desire, honesty, discipline and survival. It stays away from politicizing and intellectualizing the problems of homelessness and poverty in America, and instead focuses on people in their essence in face-to-face encounters. He doesn't confine his spiritual thoughts to an abstract world but lets them stand and sit freely with him by the roadside. People frequently surprised Moody while he begged, and me, too, as I read the book.
Moody's writing style reflects the openness and honesty of his accounts. He is not constrained by rules of grammar. His writing is more akin to poetry and therefore better conveys his thoughts and emotions than prosaic, proper English. He knows what he's doing, though, and I'm not the only one who thinks so: in his memoir we learn The New Yorker and other prestigious magazines published other works of his years before his financial plight. We also learn about his great love of acting and his successful pursuit of work in theater and film.
This memoir shows its author to be highly principled and disciplined. He strives to stick to his self-promises, such as writing about people who helped him while he begged. My only criticism is small and is related to this honoring: the last fourth of the book inspired me less and seemed a little bit like some sort of acknowledgement roll call, though not actually becoming perfunctory. But Moody promised he would acknowledge these people, and he does. I enthusiastically recommend "Will Work for Food or $." Everyone should read it and every home library should have it. There is no other book quite like it.

On both levels, the level of person and the level of writer, the author seized the authentic moment of his reality and recognized the power that flows from his being able to totally accept and acknowledge himself, where he's at, and once able to do that with surprise, openness, a lack of bitterness, and an absorption in the moment, he's on your way.

fabulous recipes, fairly quickReview Date: 2002-07-31
The only thing I will say is that the 15 minute part for a lot of the recipes I like most is pretty optimistic... but there are some that are genuinely 15 minute recipes (the chicken and corn skillet is a fast and tasty meal).
Definitely try this cookbook - the recipes are fun, encourage you to experiment a bit, and are really good. It would make a great gift for someone who has mastered the true basics of cooking (how to pick out produce, boil water, grill plain chicken, etc.) and is looking for a versatile but fast set of recipes to enjoy.
Highly recommended!

Part cookbook, Part time capsule and totally wonderfulReview Date: 2003-07-31
The recipes themselves are really simple in contrast to, for example, some of martha stewart's recipes that get complicated by their telescopic travels into the minutia. In contrast to that the *21* recipes are bold in their simplicity. (Desserts seemed to me to be somewhat more complex, but than desserts tend to be) Some recipes fall into the traditional catagory and have been around for as long as the club has been, others are new. Its interesting to see the appeal of an old time favorite. I have been toying with the idea of trying the 21 traditional chicken hash for a number of year...
I have made quite a few of the side dishes and they are excellent. The roasted shallots are wonderful with meats and poultry. Roasted garlic is a classic. Maple glazed root vegetable is great for Thanksgiving. I havent tried the meat recipes because I fear that with the simplicity of the dishes the quality of the meat is crucial. I'm certain that i could hunt out the required grade of beef, if I tried I just havent to this point.
The chunky blue cheese and walnut dressing is amazing and the citus ginger dressing is wonderful on asparagus. There are many *winners* in this cookbook. But for me the real appeal is the history of the resturant. What presidents ate there...who was the first woman to wear pants there...who ordered and got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich...things on that line. Cartoons about 21 dot the book, rememberences are interspersed with wine suggestions... news stories and even a photo of michael douglas and charlie sheen from wall street. The 21 club is a cultural icon and this book shows it. Its the best of both worlds..both solid cookbook and warm memories.
The book itself has a very nice size for a cookbook. More square than rectangle and with a separate jacket cover than you can wipe spills off of. It lies flat, a must for cook books and the binding has been sturdy over the 4 years that I have owned it. The pages are not all that resistant to spills and staining will occur, unfortunately they are not glossy so you can not wipe them. They are bright white and easily read altho a bit thin, you can see the text from the next page thru them (not enough to be especially confusing but .... )
This is an excellent addition to any recipe collection. A great gift for the *foodie* in your life or even someone who enjoys the history of NY city, perhaps.

The Ancient Cookfire: How to Rejuvenate Body and SpiritReview Date: 2001-06-15
L'Esperance says "clearly our physical, psychological--even spiritual--well-being depends largely upon what we eat, how it is cooked, and the way we eat it."
She discusses the benefits of regular fasting, and offers detailed instructions on safe fasting. She provides numerous recipes for teas and juices to drink while fasting.
The first part of the book is concerned with restoration of the body and a discussion of how the four seasons can affect the body. Each season, spring, summer, autumn, and winter, has a chapter devoted to recipes best suited to that season. L'Esperance says "the beauty of eating seasonal foods and using cleansing diets is their simplicity and their ability to help balance the systems of the human body."
Another chapter provides recipes for internal and external water therapy, and the chapter on herbs is filled with directions for preparing various teas. The final chapter discusses food balancing and combining, digestion aids, and cookware recommendations. She also provides a bibliography and a listing of sources for those wishing further information.
L'Esperance wrote her book "to make it easy to explore these many techniques that have been, and still are, essential for health and self-healing. They are all tried and tested to help ensure a pleasant and/or rewarding time." Readers who have wondered about safe and healthy fasting and rejuvenating their bodies will find answers to all their questions in The Ancient Cookfire.

Shouldn't the cows be fed a seasonal diet before we eat 'emReview Date: 2002-03-12
Speaking of butter, when I go to Luger's I always order my Porterhouse with a side of baked potato with extra butter and sour cream, along with a side of the creamed spinach. They use this special triple-fatted butter there that makes the steaks and side dishes just unforgettable, arterially-speaking.
For dessert, you gotta get the triple-cream cheese cake. They serve these huge slabs of it.
I'll tell you, you never walk out of Peter's hungry!
Anyways, I stopped in there not too long ago and showed the maitre d' a copy of Miss L'Esperance's book. He gave me a funny look like I was being a wise guy or something. But I asked him, "Do your cows get fed a diet of seasonally-adjusted grains before they get whacked? This here lady says that's the healthy way to eat."
I thought the maitre d', his name is Joe, was gonna whack me. "What the hell are you talking about?" he says. "You got a screw loose or somethin?"
I got a little testy with Joe. I told him I was thinking of fasting to rejuvenate my body and spirit, but before I started the fast, I wanted one last great meal at Luger's, but I did not want to eat a cow that had been fed out-of-season grain that would disrupt its natural rhythms before the packing-house chopped its head off and hung it on hooks in a giant cooler in Nebraska before putting it on a long-haul diesel tractor-trailer to Brooklyn where I could eat it, swimming in butter.
Joe says to me, "Look pal, we serve super-marbled, ultra-high cholesterol beef to men who don't give a s___ about what kind of a gut they have, cause they hate their jobs and hope their life insurance pays off the wife and kids before they get too old to afford the premiums. Do you think they care if the damn cow had alfalfa or millet before it got decapitated? Much less when it was grown, for Chrissake!"
"Well, Joe, I don't know," I says. "But this lady says it's better if we eat foods that are natural for the season, and I'd like to be sure the cows I'm eating do the same. It's the least we could do before we carve 'em up into steaks."
Joe looked at me long and hard. He said, "Ed, if you want to 'rejuvenate your body and spirit'" -- he kind of spit those words out -- "I suggest you forget the hippie food and step over here to the bar and have a double Tanqueray martini and a nice chat with your waitress Tammy, who will be your server tonight. Next question?"
I think Joe's a pretty hard case, and I was wondering if any of you readers of this book could stop in at Luger's next time you're in Brooklyn and try to persuade him.

The book can be sometimes confusing where the information is so thick it becomes confusing.. It doesn't have every rememdy in the world here but is without a doubt the best attempt to do so..
You can find maximium dossages for various vitamins in this book... It is well organized and has a little bit of everything.. If your suffering you might be able to do some deductive resoning to cure yourself of your ailment.. good luck..
THE BEST BOOK ON HERBS/VITAMINS/CURES I HAVE EVER READ.Review Date: 2003-07-30
THE AUTHOR WROTE THIS COMPENDIUM WITH "INFORMATION" IN MIND. IT ISN'T WELL WRITTEN. IT'S MORE LIKE A BRAIN DRAIN OF DATA ON JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU CAN EVER WANT TO LOOK UP. THE GOOD THING IS THAT YOU'LL LEARN AMAZING THINGS THAT YOU WON'T FIND IN ANY OTHER BOOK IN EXISTENCE. THE BAD THING IS THAT SOMETIMES YOU MAY GET ANNOYED WITH THE SEARCH FOR SOMETHING. IT IS CLUTTERED AND AT TIMES LABORIOUS WHEN TRYING TO LOCATE SOMETHING.
I HOPE THE AUTHOR WILL INCLUDE BETTER HEADINGS AND BETTER ORGANIZATION OF MATERIAL UNDER EACH HEADING IN A NEWER EDITION...
BUY THIS BOOK.
The most valuable book you will ever own!Review Date: 2005-02-12
THis is the most informative, thorough, interesting book on natural health I have ever read!
If you hate to read, this book is probably not for you. It's also not for people who have trouble comprehending what they read. People who love to read, who have a intense interest in nutrition, natural health, science, or healing will absolutely adore this book. I guard mine with my life! Especially now that I see it is out of print. If I had the cash, I would buy another copy while I still can. The book is truly incredible! It contains a phenomenol amount of information. Very in-depth details, everything you need to know about specific vitamins, herbs, minerals, amino acids, etc. And also enlightening information regarding some unorthodox healing methods. In depth information about energy, electricity, auras, and so forth. It is absolutely amazing how much information this book contains. The format and organization is unique, and in some ways difficult to follow at first. BUt that's because it contains SO MUCH information! And the quality of the information it contains is worth taking the time to re-read it. The author did an incredible job with this book, and you can tell he put a great deal of time, effort, and research into it! It's worth it's weight in gold!! (And this is one heavy book! :)
