Are you a cook who is a "little of this, little of that" kinda chef? Then this is the cookbook for you! The author Dian Garris encourages you to "talk to your food" and let it tell you what the final product is supposed to look and taste like. If you put the new age funkiness of the "channeled message" aside, there are some really stimulating recipes in this book (whether you buy into the spirituality of the author or not!).

Simple, fun, and delicious

This cookbook is a "10"! Dyan Garris is a master in the kitchen. I have tried many of the recipes and they have all been great. For a "non-cooker", I am now getting pretty comfortable in the kitchen. Most recently, the Chicken Cinnamon was very tasty and a big hit with my dinner group.

The directions are all easy to follow and the pictures are excellent. I can't wait to try the desserts.

A great addition to any cookbook collection.

I am always attracted to Angelic things and this cookbook is no exception. It is brilliantly written with a lot of great recipes and the pictures are surpurb. The desserts are wonderful as well, everything I have tried so far has been great. Even though I don't eat meat, I used meat substitutes and they turned out excellent. Definitely worth the price. I am very happy with my Angelic Cookbook...
Thanks! I'll be back...

Voice of the Angels Cookbook is for the novice and the experienced cook. Easy to use, the recipes are full of flavor with directions that anyone can follow. The author gives you the sense that you can do this whether you have cooked before or not. There are helpful hints and shortcuts if you are in a hurry. The pictures are some of the best I've ever seen in a cook book and show you what the finished product looks like. The messages spread throughout the book keep the reading interesting and give us food for thought. I found myself paging throught the book to get to the next message! All the recipes I've tried have been a hugh hit with friends and family. This is one cookbook you just have to try.

The recipes in this book are some of the best available if you are serious about eating a healthy diet. They are not only vegetarian but they eliminate the refined oils and sugars which are such a major factor in causing diseases like atherosclerosis, heart disease, adult onset diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. They are the recipes used at the Newstart lifestyle program where they get excellent results with just diet and exercise. The recipes are delicious; we use them in our home all the time. I highly recommend this cookbook to my patients.

a solid good cookbook for those aspiring to the vegan diet. the only drawbacks being that some recipies require hard-to-locate ingredients such as vegan gelatin and smoked yeast. Other than that a very worthwhile purchase for those wishing to eat healthy, etc.

This beautiful, great book is my "food bible". I use it to learn about different items, to know the nutritional value and to find out cooking procedures and times for various foods.

It is the best, all around nutrition book I have, and I am a food scientist (I attended University of California at Davis - I am surprised they don't recommend us to buy it!).

This is one of the best presents I have ever given to my parents too.

This book is a must for anyone who loves food. Nine comprehensive chapters covering not only fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, but also meat and poultry, fish and shellfish and dairy and eggs.

The chapter on Nutrition Basics is essential for anyone who wants to come to terms with food and how it relates to good health. Appendicies include a Cooking Glossary (which describes in detail baking, boiling, braising, poaching, pressure cooking, roasting, simmering, steeping, stewing, and on and on ...), Fats and Oils, and Herbs and Spices.

Subsections of each item include topics such as availability, shopping tips, storage, preparations and serving suggestions. Nutritional information boxes are included indicating calories, fat content, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, cholesterol and sodium. Also listed are key vitamins and nutrients.

Fascinating information is also included .. for example, the fruit/vegetable argument about tomatoes is not only settled definitively (botanically a fruit, specifically a berry) but we are also informed that as the result of a tariff dispute, it was officially designated a vegetable in 1893 by the Supreme Court of the United States ... Proving that the court's having their collective head up their robes is nothing new.

If you are serious about learning how to improve your relationship with food (and who isn't?) you've simply got to have this book. I've had mine since 1995 (I got it in conjunction with a subscription to the University of California at Berkeley's Wellness Letter), and I still consult it regularly.

I think that this book, along with Julia Child's "The Way To Cook" would be an excellent foundation for anyone who is serious about health and nutrition.

Swami Muktananda provides a masterful explanation of the Hindu way of life and the art of meditation as a means whereby individuals can achieve awareness or consciousness of their Godly core. What makes his explanation superior is that it is written in the language of ordinary people without all the flowery prattle and mumbo-jumbo of other Hindu theologians. It is educational, brilliant in its clarity, and inviting--a must read for people in search of inner peace (relief of stress) and greater spirituality. The review is also published on my website.

Review Date: 2003-01-14
"We are all God" is the KEY message of this book and getting ourselves to REALLY REALIZE it is the most difficult part. It is our own disbelief in ourselves being GOD that is stopping us from attaining true, ultimate BLISS and HAPPINESS. Muktananda explains to us how to get rid of our negativity and doubt. He gives us the secrets of sounds (the mantra), breathing technique (our natural mantra that we do every time we take a breath)! Just as "The One Minute Guide to Prosperity and Enlightenment" gives us further, detailed SECRET TECHNIQUES that will SAVE US VALUABLE TIME & ENERGY so we can attain HAPPINESS & BLISS immediately! This book was TERRIFIC, it explains the Eastern Traditions in simple, easily understood and VERY ATTAINABLE terms. It is an awsome look at how we complicate everything ourselves and gives us the solutions to make changes in our life right now!
Thank you Muktananda for revealing these sacred techiques to us!!!

This is a great book for the beginner starting out on the path to self-realization. It is written in a style that is very easy to understand and contains some simple and yet profound truths towards enlightenment. I particularly liked the chapter on the mantra - om namah shivayah - and how the author recommends chanting it on the commute to work or when you have idle time. It's certainly been working for me and this little book is now a permanent fixture, dipped into regularly, on the bookshelf.

Back in 1996 when I was 40 years old somebody gave me a copy of this book for a Christmas present. It stopped me in my tracks. Where WAS I going? What most impressed me initially with Swami Muktananda's writing was how clearly he seemed to understand my existential quandry, as if, without even knowing me, he understood everything about my spiritual predicament, as well as having knowledge of subjects far beyond my grasp. Well, I was hooked. I now have a collection of two big boxes full of Muktananda books and Muktananda-related books. What can I say, Muktananda is one of those rare beings with the ability to impart Shakti to his readers, just with his word.

This well-written book provides a wealth of useful information on all aspects relating to whisky production. To date, there has been a scarcity of technical books on the market for those studying the field of whisky production and distilling in general. This book fills the void by collecting together a group of highly qualified technical experts to share their knowledge with both novice and advanced reader. Students will find clearly defined chapters beginning with the history of whisky distillation, and going through the production process from raw materials, to fermentation, distillation and maturation and finally finishing the book on a dedicated chapter to the marketing of Scotch whisky.

Overall, this is a well-conceived, well-written, and well-organized book. This will prove to be an excellent addition to the bookshelf of any undergraduate or Masters level student who wishes to understand the field of whisky production and marketing.

Whisky:Technology, Production and Marketing
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-19
This book is the first volume in what seems set to be an important and major series: the Alcoholic Beverage Series, edited by a highly esteemed trio of experts in the respective fields of brewing and distilling. This first, highly specialized volume, Whisky: Technology, Production and Marketing, is brought to us via the considerable editorial talents of Dr. Inge Russell who has presented the works of 14 qualified (peer reviewed and respected) individuals in one comprehensive and highly readable text. Apart from The Science and Technology of Whiskies, edited by J.R. Piggott et al, and which was published back in 1989 there has never been such a technical volume dedicated to one type and style of distilled alcoholic beverage. Some books including the so called "Alcohol texts" were published in the 1930s and 1940s (some recently reprinted) and even some within the past 20 years but these were either of a more generalized nature or were non-peer reviewed vehicles that entertained us with a promotional bias towards particular interests or authors and furthermore, which, while still useful, are of course considerably out of date.

The up-to-date volume by the team assembled by Dr. Russell covers all aspects of the topic starting with raw materials and progressing through all processes involved in the manufacture of finished products and beyond. Both malt whisky and grain whisky production is entertained. Scotch whisky is placed in context with its Irish, N. American and Japanese counterparts. Batch and continuous distillation topics are adequately and evenly presented. Fermentation and its associated biochemistry and microbiology gets a fairly detailed presentation. Flavor terminology (an ever expanding and important subject) and quality control issues are given appropriate coverage along with the compositional analysis of whisky. The vast and fascinating topic of oak wood-based maturation, aging and blending are admirably presented; this latter topic worthy of the cost of the book in and of itself in this reviewer's opinion.

The volume certainly fills a very wide gap in the literature concerning alcoholic beverages. The book will provide a "definitive" and excellent textbook, but even better than that, it will be useful and valuable to all who wish to delve deeper into the art, the science and the histories and "mysteries" of this most fascinating beverage.

In short and in summary, there is clearly something here for everyone who enjoys and truly appreciates whisky and other distilled beverages at, for its extensive yet readable coverage, a pretty modest price. You will be "tapping" into this potential classic volume on frequent occasions for many years to come.

It's hard not to love a book whose author introduces you to a daddy longlegs named Oscar as well as the lovely maroon flower of the wild ginger plant. The illustrations are vivacious. I challenge anyone to read this book and look at roadside beggars in the same way as before. It is impossible, because you now know that the next beggar you pass just might be another Bruce Moody. Bruce Moody breaks all the steretypes. This is perhaps the most honest book I've ever read, and Moody's willingness to share with readers his inner process is extraordinary. Most people would find the mere act of standing on a street corner begging for work or money utterly embarrassing, and indeed, Moody himself struggles mightily with shame. But Moody courageously shares everything: not just the doing of it, but his self-condemnation, his stereotyping judgments of passersby (who will give? who won't give?), his struggles with guilt, fear, rage -- all the demons. Rarely does one encounter such an act of generosity as this book represents, when an author shares so intimately with readers. Because of Bruce Moody's generosity and his willingness to put truth before ego, I am able to learn something rich and rare about the human condition, and about myself -- because I am that same human being and I have my own roadsides. Although I have never literally had to beg on a roadside, I found myself irresistably identifying with Moody in his self-discoveries: I, too, am prejudiced; I, too, try to control the people, places and things around me; I, too, have moments when I am merciless with myself and with others; I, too, desire God; I, too, wonder about the source and meaning of blessing.

But most of all, I am glad I read this book for the hope it gives. If I am ever faced with a desperate situation, Bruce Moody will be there in the back of my mind, coaching. I read this book with a chilly spine, I'll tell you, for the prospect of losing your home and going begging is terrifying. But at the same time I read with a sense of adventure, wonder, and even joy. Joy? Yes, joy. That's where Bruce Moody ultimately takes his readers, straight into the realm of joy, right there in the most unexpected of places, along the roadside. To me, that's the greatest message of the book. It's the treasure buried in the field, and thank you Bruce for digging it up and sharing it with all of us. Congratulations!

Take Dostoyevsky's "Notes from the Underground," mix it with the Biblical stories of Job's travails and Jacob's wrestling, simmer for 60 years, stir in American optimism and the popular career book, "What Color is Your Parachute," bring to a rolling boil, remove from heat, let cool, serve, and you'll have Bruce Moody's memoir, "Will Work for Food or $."

All who have encountered beggars in America should read Mr. Moody's memoir. It makes no difference whether you've agonized over the plight of beggars, as I have, or criticized them for being too picky in their job searches, as I also have. You will find Moody's experiences and soul searching powerful and interesting on several levels.

Moody's memoir takes us into the mind and experiences of an honest senior citizen begging for work to stay afloat. His experience is not the result of a contrived, self-imposed literary or journalistic assignment but instead comes from his struggle to survive and keep his home. Political and intellectual motives can drive authors to concoct or artificially partake of experiences inorder to make points or satisfy intellectual curiosity, but such works lack the deep, poetic soul searching and humor of Moody's work.

His memoir contains much more than temporal descriptions of financial and employment predicaments. It reveals Moody's deepest thoughts of optimism, self-doubt, prejudice, humility, spirituality, pride, desire, honesty, discipline and survival. It stays away from politicizing and intellectualizing the problems of homelessness and poverty in America, and instead focuses on people in their essence in face-to-face encounters. He doesn't confine his spiritual thoughts to an abstract world but lets them stand and sit freely with him by the roadside. People frequently surprised Moody while he begged, and me, too, as I read the book.

Moody's writing style reflects the openness and honesty of his accounts. He is not constrained by rules of grammar. His writing is more akin to poetry and therefore better conveys his thoughts and emotions than prosaic, proper English. He knows what he's doing, though, and I'm not the only one who thinks so: in his memoir we learn The New Yorker and other prestigious magazines published other works of his years before his financial plight. We also learn about his great love of acting and his successful pursuit of work in theater and film.

This memoir shows its author to be highly principled and disciplined. He strives to stick to his self-promises, such as writing about people who helped him while he begged. My only criticism is small and is related to this honoring: the last fourth of the book inspired me less and seemed a little bit like some sort of acknowledgement roll call, though not actually becoming perfunctory. But Moody promised he would acknowledge these people, and he does. I enthusiastically recommend "Will Work for Food or $." Everyone should read it and every home library should have it. There is no other book quite like it.

At the age of 60, Yale educated Bruce Moody was fired from his job in the Bay area and could not get another. As homelessness loomed, he took what he perceived as the only way out: he became a beggar. In the year he spent standing on the off-ramp of a major highway with a sign reading,"Will Work for Food or $" and blessing the cars as they passed, the task he had set himself, Moody had plenty of time to contemplate the most unlovely contents of his own mind. He confronted shame and regret and opinion-making and grandiosity and all the rest of the baggage with which we are all saddled. Again and again, he encountered bliss. People, he reports, treated him impeccably--and this includes the people, very few, who insulted,or bullied him. Moody ceased being a victim and became something else entirely, a wide-awake human being. This book is remarkable not only as the account of an eccentric and dignified spiritual journey but also as a masterpiece of elegant prose.

At the age of 60, Bruce Moody found out the hard way that education from Yale and Columbia, published writing credits, a strong acting resume and years of work in the business world (as a contract employee) could not protect him from economic downturn. His struggle to keep a roof over his head, pay his bills, continue to develop and maintain his self-respect, and cope with his sister's serious illness, without burdening his family financially, is a story as suspenseful as anything by Ken Follett. Of interest to anyone, especially persons involved with human growth, spirituality, the arts, and any of us who've ever whizzed by those guys with the placards at freeway offramps, is this memoir. It details how, with fear and trepidation, Bruce Moody decided to trust his wellbeing to the kindness of strangers and stand by the roadside with the proverbial sign: "Will work for food or $". His expectations and prejudices are shattered as he finds that his life is being supported by people he does not know and, in many cases, will never know. How he handles, with grace and spiritual insight, this radical shift in his living patterns, until he can locate steady work, is a fascinating and thought-provoking memoir. Highly recommended and quite unexpected.

The devotion to detail, the honesty, the dignity, the humanity, the willingness to put a personal philosophy to the test-all these qualities come up roses in this book.

On both levels, the level of person and the level of writer, the author seized the authentic moment of his reality and recognized the power that flows from his being able to totally accept and acknowledge himself, where he's at, and once able to do that with surprise, openness, a lack of bitterness, and an absorption in the moment, he's on your way.

I have already commented on the virtues of this book which influenced me to prefer it over the highly vaunted volume: What To Drink With What You Eat by Dornenburg/Page. See the review there for the contrast, if interested.

The only thing that bugged me here was the apparent reluctance to use the word "Christmas" (!!!), but only the innocuous "holiday" in the book's "Winter" section. Are you kidding me? I realize MacNeil is the host of a PBS series, but has the tyranny of political correctness now extended this far? If the author finds no personal significance in the meaning of this most cherished of American celebrations, it was at the very least a major missed opportunity to address the occasion (directly) in her otherwise fine work. (Needless to say, the same applies to the "Easter"/"spring celebration" situation.)

I may love wine, but I'm by no means an expert. As a food writer and long-time cook, I know my way around the kitchen, have no trouble whipping up a dinner party, and enjoy feeding people. However, I needed some help/advice for wine pairings. Oh... I know enough to know which whites work best with poultry or seafood, and I know a heavier beef dish calls for a more substantial red wine. Beyond that, I'm a novice learning my way. This book provides loads of information, suggestions, tips and encouragement in an entertaining style that isn't intimidating or condescending. The author knows food and wine, she loves food and wine, and it shows!

I highly recommend this book if you want to brush up your pairing skills, or if you simply want to learn a little more about wine and food for deliciously entertaining dinners. Those very seriously into wine (who know much more than I do) will also find the book a useful addition to their collections, as her recipes are wonderful.

I already am a fan of Karen MacNeils Wine,Food ,and Friends on PBS.Shes very eloquent and soo knowledgable. She presents her ideas in a friendly way as well. The recipes are phenomenal also.I tried the meatloaf with sundried tomatoes and the stuffing so far. They turned out great and the less expensive wines were not difficult to find.I cant wait for her Season 2 series on PBS.

A Must-Have for Quick, Healthy Eating!

I've made my share of homemade whole wheat tortillas by hand, and all were as pliable as formica and shaped like the ink-blot pictures you see TV psychiatrists using! Using the directions from "Wrap It Up", my tortillas are soft, round and oh so delicious! But this is only one reason that I find "Wrap It Up" to be a must-have in my kitchen. Eating healthy and cooking quickly are important in our family, and the recipes in "Wrap It Up" make this possible. In a matter of minutes, I can make a batch of Flat Bagel Wraps, or Garlic Herb Wraps, for example, and have warm, fresh bread for a quick meal. I don't need to rely on my old standards of egg salad or peanut butter to fill them, either, with over 25 recipes for either fillings or entrees using the wraps included in the book. I especially like the fact that there are no "exotic" ingredients required for these recipes - I can make virtually any of the recipes without having to run to the store first. If quick, healthy cooking is what you're striving for, a copy of "Wrap It Up" will help you meet your goal in a most delicious way.

I have been trying for the last several months to make tortillas/wraps by hand. They have always come out too dry no matter how moist my dough was. They broke down the middle when folded and were cracked around the edges. The techniques in Vickilynn's book have changed all that. I made the Tangy Tomato Wraps and the Southwestern Black Bean Wraps last night and they came out just beautifully. They were delicious too. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn to make wraps by hand or with a press and have them turn out like store bought ones. Your family will thank you for it.

To anybody who hasn't tried Vickilynn's wrap recipes, they are WONDERFUL. (This from a person who could never get the hang of making tortillas until I followed the instructions that are in this book). These are so fast, so easy, so yummy..... We have a large family and a busy farm, and most "fun" and unusual recipes are out of reach for us because of the amount of time it takes to make something for a family of 10. Not these. My 11-y-o daughter and I made an assembly line and made two triple batches in an hour. We don't work fast, either. My family is now addicted.

A great book for your employees, to make sure their prepared

In his book: Y2K: You Can Burn This Book!, Tom Potter has done an excellent job covering the basic elements all our communities should consider as the Year 2000 approaches. We've all spent many months and considerable resources reconfiguring our hardware and software so they will continue to support our businesses - now we need to look at our personal preparedness efforts and those of our employees. Potter devotes a chapter to each area of fundamental needs (water, heat, power, food, etc), explaining where disruptions might occur and then providing suggestions for different levels of planning. For a detailed resource that follows up on topics mentioned in many preparedness primers, this is just the book you need. ---Deben Tobias, Board of Directors; Business for Social Responsibility

A great resource for taking the 1st step to being prepared.

Tom Potter's Y2K: You Can Burn This Book! is an excellent resource for anybody concerned with disaster preparedness. With an emphasis on personal and household preparation, he sets a positive but proactive tone for pursuing these preparation activities. Using his expertise in industrial energy use, he discusses the scope of neighborhood preparation that Boulder > is also concerned about, and offers a broad range of solutions. Potter's book is a great resource for taking that first step toward being informed - and ultimately being prepared. He's also been an excellent speaking resource for Boulder County Y2K meetings. > --K. Garcia, Community Coordinator, Boulder County Y2K Preparedness Group >

This book is thought provoking and droll. Ice storms and blizzards here in Canada make emergency preparations useful for everyone. Most of the information so delightfully presented here is of use in any of those situations. This book will be valuable even after the Y2k has passed.

I've read a bunch of these now and this one is easy to read and understand. I'm trying to get my church group to use it, becuase it would be good for helping people in the local area when things get rough. Bunch of lists and its funny too!

I wish it would have had more stuff on where to buy food and things. But he has it on a website, I guess.

Excellent family and community based guide to preparedness.

Unlike some of the other Y2K books I looked at, this one offers a reasonable approach to personal, family, and community preparedness. In some ways, it's unfortunate that it's linked to Y2K, because it is such a useful preparedness book. Living in earthquake country, I can really appreciate the author's checklists, worksheets, and insights on how to calculate how much water, food, and energy a family will need to ride out any crisis. Also, the very optimistic outlook and focus on non-violent responses to crises was a unique approach, given many of the other guides that seem focused on seige mentality. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who lives in an area that is subject to earthquakes, floods, blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes, or any other possible disasters, including Y2K.
