I echo the review from "A Customer".
In addition...
I'm a preschool teacher and the kids definitely understood the story. It's a great addition to a multi-cultural program and can open up conversation about culture.
As for the book, I enjoyed the illustrations!

Our family loves this book! We checked it out from our local library and soon it was my four year old daughter's favorite. When December rolled around, I checked it out again, bought tamale makings and my four year old and I made cheese tamales. We took them to her pre-school class for snack along with the book. Her teacher read the book to the class and then they all had the tamales that my daughter and I made. It was a huge hit!! Now that she is in kindergarten, we will do it again (I am buying the book since I have two girls and I think this tradition will go on for a while!). Tamales are a really kid friendly activity and it was a great experience for both of us. You should try it!

I love this story because it brings back memories of when my family would get together at Christmas time to make the annual batch of tamales. Everyone was involved and when all the work was done, we couldn't wait until they were ready to eat. The story is well told and my students look forward to hearing the story year after year.

Class loved it!

My class of second and third graders really enjoyed this book. Many of them make tamales at home every year. They enjoyed reading about someone else that shares the same traditions. It opened up a lot of discussion about telling the truth. The only problem was all the talk about tamales made them hungry!

I love this book. It's small but don't let that fool you. Each page packs a punch as the author gets straight to the point. Trans Fats: The Hidden Killer... is extremely useful in providing extensive information on TFA's (trans fatty acids), educating the consumer on how to identify products containing TFA's and most importantly, how to avoid them. This book, among others regarding our scandalous government and food industry has opened my eyes to the unfiltered version of our controlled society. I no longer spend my hard earned money supporting food companies that manufacture foods with TFA's and I hope that the information in this book impacts enough people so that they too will reject purchasing foods with TFA's to send a reminder on who's really in charge.

Big business does not care about the public's weel-being; they are only interested in the bottom line! This little book exposes them for the greedheads they are, and reveals the truth about the toxins they are feeding us every day, everywhere. It should be required reading for every high school student in the world.

Trans Fats by Judith Shaw

Review Date: 2006-06-15
The author urges us to read labels so that we are informed about
the contents of the food we eat. For instance, canned sodas can
have a widely varying amount of sugar per can. Sugar grams can
vary from 0-50 or more grams/can of soda. For diabetics, diet
soda, seltzer, bottled water and certain diet teas contain
a minimum amount of sugar-near zero grams in most cases.

Transfats and partially hydrogenated fats contain little nutrient value. They can be colorless and odorless yet cheap to manufacture. Most physicians will recommend 5 or more fresh fruits and veggies a day in order to receive the highest nutritive value in the daily diet.

The author provides the public a service by depicting sample
food labels to demonstrate the non-food content which can be
detrimental to our health. The acquisition would be valuable
for any personal health library.

Fantastic book, and well-referenced

A book like this is worth it's weight in gold when it comes packed with references, and this book excels with the references and research that was included. I've long found it ridiculous that food companies label their products as "trans fat free" in bold print, while the ingredient list clearly states "partially hydrogenated oil", all thanks to the FDA's approval (apparently if the trans fat serving is small enough, it doesn't exist! Amazing!) That the FDA could make this approval of deceptive labeling is just unbeliebable!
I've cut trans fats completely out of my diet and I've seen a much improved quality of living and health. I would advise people to check out this book, and then start reading labels on foods. A simple rule: IF THE INGREDIENT LIST INCLUDES HYDROGENATED OIL, PUT IT BACK ON THE SHELF!

Every living person should read this book.

For the past couple years, I have been half heartedly avoiding trans fats. But mostly in the grocery store where labels can easily be read. Now I will re-double my efforts. And I am putting my money where my mouth is. I'm buying 120 copies from the publisher to give away to our 75 employees and a few friends, with a few left to sell in our hotel restaurant.

The historical perspective was great, but was I left wanting to see a little more technical / scientific data. It is an easy, quick read which I appreciate. I just wanted more scientific information to satisfy my curiosity. This is probably one of the least understood and most important issues facing people today. From all that I have read from this book and others, cutting out trans fats is absolutely crucial for good health.

I consider Jean Carper to be a little better nutritional writer because I think she is more direct. On my underlining test, I find myself underlining a lot more in Carper's books. But Judith Shaw is now on my short list of good authors writing about important issues. Occasionally she got a little wordy, but I would not call the book too wordy overall or verbose. It is relatively direct, and the subject matter is of utmost importance.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is still breathing and able to read. Thanks Ms. Shaw for researching and writing it.

I love the allrecipes web site and this book is a great companion to it. You can find a lot of their more popular dishes in this book and they are very good and easy to make. Some of the stand outs: Angel Chicken Pasta is one of their 1000+ reviewed recipes and its included in this book, as well as Iced Pumpkin cookies (yummy!!). The best thing is that you can check the Allrecipes' web site to see what other people suggest as helpful hints for the recipes in this book. Great gift for people who like to cook or just starting out to cook. Love this book!!!

I love to cook but have a hard time picking good recipes. I have totally been in love with the All recipes website for over a year now. I'm now in love with their cookbooks. We always rate every recipe in our home on a scale of 1 to 10 and only cook the 10's again. I have more 10's in the allrecipes cookbooks than in any other on my shelf.

My family thinks I'm an incredible cook, but All Recipes makes it so easy. This is the BEST! (Great for brides and grooms getting their start. A good meal on the table will make for a better year or so getting started!)

Jennifer Leigh Sauer has created a masterwork of words and photography that transcends the local tea culture in the San Francisco Bay Area and brings tea culture to a larger audience. By focusing on the Bay Area, she brings the centuries old concept of tea culture to a larger American audience. Her personal adventure in mastering this subject has created more than a local guidebook. Ms. Sauer's loving attention to detail has produced a beautiful book.

If you are a fan of Michael Crichton type novels, you will love this book! Swain combines teaching us about a new technology, bio-engineering, with a gripping, fast-paced story that includes action, suspense and romance. The story also takes us around the world. Although fiction, it is all believable. As the plot builds to a crescendo, you will not be able to stop reading until you have finished the book. I recommend it highly.

This is a very interesting book with excellent photographs throughout. I have already made the Meat Piroshki from Russia, Cabbage and Mushroom Pirogi from Poland, "Fast and Naked" Gnudi con Zucca from Italy and the Little Ear Dumplings in Borscht from Russia. All were very tasty. The recipes cover specialties from many countries in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe and the Americas. Why 4 stars instead of 5? I was disappointed not to find any dumplings to drop on top of stews or fruit, no drop dumplings for soups and the one recipe from Canada (from Quebec which is where I live) is not one that I or my friends have ever heard of. Maple syrup dumplings would have been really typical but alas, there is no recipe for them. Still, this book is certainly worth having for what it does contain.

Review Date: 2008-03-18
`A World of Dumplings' by Brian Yarvin is exactly the kind of passionate treatment of a specialized culinary subject we like to find from `little presses' like `The Countryman Press' up to and including former upstart (and now giant) 10 Speed Press. Yarvin is neither a chef like Rick Bayless nor an established culinary journalist or writer such as Paula Wolfert or Claudia Roden. But Yarvin has what appears to be a consuming interest and passion for his subject which has produced a book which is at the top of its class as a survey of dumpling recipes.
The very first thing Yarvin does right is that he covers the whole world, as promised, but touches of few if any types of food which are NOT easily recognized as dumplings.
My very first interest was to see how he would approach that very special Pennsylvania Dutch contribution to world dumplings, the baked apple dumpling. As it happens, Yarvin lives and works just across the Delaware from Dumpling Central, in western New Jersey, so he was in an excellent position to do lots of first hand research, and that is exactly what he did. As a very amateur student of this dish, I have tried several different recipes from PA Dutch cookbooks, and I have eaten many a sample at local restaurants and fairs. And, I can attest that Yarvin has captured this dish in all its sweet and spicy and doughy glory. This is NOT diet food, kiddies, and Yarvin has applied the sugar, lard, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg at all the right places. Even better, he has not assumed, as many of these PA Dutch cookbooks do, that you know the basics of preparing dough. His recipe is more detailed than anything I have seen coming out of Lancaster County from Best Books!
My second check on Yarvin's recipes was to compare his Steamed Chinese Pork Dumplings (shu mai) to a recipe by an oriental culinary specialist, Ellen Leong Blonder in `Dim Sum, The Art of Chinese Tea Lunch' and I found again that Yarvin again gives us a recipe which is as good or better than one available from specialists in the area.
My third check was to compare his empanada recipe to Rick Bayless' recipe in his authoritative `Authentic Mexican' book and also to the equally authoritative Diane Kennedy's `The Essential Cuisines of Mexico'. Here, I found a somewhat puzzling result. Bayless and Kennedy give two different recipes for the empanada wrapper, with Bayless using only wheat flour and Kennedy using only masa (corn flour). The simple explanation is that Bayless is describing Empanadas de Picadillo from northern Mexico and Kennedy is describing Empanadas de Requeson from southern Mexico. Yarvin splits the difference with his single recipe and creates a wrapper with about ¾ wheat flour and ¼ corn flour. So, Yarvin is not giving us ethnically precise empanadas; however, just like his apple dumpling recipe and his shu mai recipe, his empanada recipe is as detailed and illuminating (or better) than any of the ethnic sources. And, Yarvin gives us five different recipes for fillings using the one `universal' empanada wrapper recipe.
The story of empanadas is repeated for virtually all of the world's varieties of dumplings, from Italian raviolis to Polish Pierogis to Russian Varenicki to Indian Samosas. Every major dumpling genre has its variations which change from region to region and, if you are to believe many writers, from household to household, with everyone believing theirs are the best.
Yarvin adds to his recipes some great stories describing his search for some of these recipes, plus some very nice condiments, such as the dipping sauces for the Chinese dim sum dumplings and pasta sauces for the Italian galaxy of filled pastas and onion marmalade condiments for the eastern European dumplings.
Very few books of this type have ever disappointed me, and this one is better than most. If your interest is exclusively in dumplings from Italy or Mexico or the Ukraine or China, this book may not be the most authentic source, but if you are a foodie omnivore and relish the notion of experimenting with all sorts of dumplings, Yarvin is your man. Of course, if you are in love with Dutch apple dumplings, the recipe for that dessert may be worth the price of the book.

I was given this book by my best friend; we both feel a strong attachment to our gandmothers. Even just flipping through it, I knew right away that I'd like it. The quality of the paper, the photographs, layout, binding are all excellent. Once I started reading it, I was glued. It's not a cookbook to use as a resource; it's a book of essays, each accompanied by a recipe. Each essay is a like a snapshot into a family of long ago, and each woman is writing about my favorite topic - the strong "grandmother-pull" she feels. Many of the women write of grandmothers they barely knew but with whom they feel some connection, while others write of grandmothers who raised them or who were active in their families. In all cases, the love, respect, awe, and gratitude the writers feel toward their grandmothers is evident in each piece. The recipes are a fun supplement to each essay. They tell another story of the grandmother in the way they were handed down or written down, and I swore I could smell the smells of each grandmother's cooking as I read. I read this book cover to cover and hated to see it end. It transported me to times long gone, times of grace, times with my grandmother, Grace.

Bought this for my husband. Unfortunately he passed before he had a chance to read it. I read it and it is very insightful and very helpful especially the herbal remedies.

An absolute delight

Jehtro Kloss was a true healer and crusader for nutrition, personal rights, freedoms, and herbalism. This huge book was his lifes work and deserves to be celebrated for what it is: a lifetimes gathering of intense study and dedication to the good of man.

He discusses everything he can think of here. While some of his viewpoints and procedures are now frowned upon - and a few of the herbal remedies taken to the degree he suggests now believed to be dangerous - the large bulk of his remedies and procedures is still regarded as safe and, in some circles, preferable to things available in modern medicine and society.

Everything from his personal life and influences, to farming techniques, crops, growing fruits and vegetables, an extensive listing of fruits, veggies, minerals, vitamins, the history of herbal medicine, herbs, their uses, the body system, the health benefits of water, fish, fresh air, exercise, sleep patterns, oatmeal, fiber, breads, salts, milk, etc is included here.

He even gives his favorite baking recipes, natural ways to make breads, cakes, soups and more, as well as hints on preserving vitamins, cooking utensils to avoid and use, not to mention desserts and beverages.

One really fascinating thing about this book is the large section devoted to water and hydrotherapy. Here we get a rundown of the history of the water cure, various ways to use water to treat - from saunas to foreign bath treatments - temperatures to use when a person is ill to fit their condition, and much much more. Excellent!

This massive bible of sorts ends with various enemas and their purposes, charcoal, guides for people wanting to be a nurse, and different massage techniques!

Sure, a little of it is outdated but most of it stands true today and shall forever. The man is to respected, and his remedies and treatments are invaluable.

Many of his formula is similar or almost identical to the great Dr. John R Christophers, another pioneer of herbal medicine, the modern Dr. Schulz who has a following of his own, and several other herbalists, naturopaths, massage therapists, hydrotherapists, and nutritionists.

And, even more incredibly, it's under 10 bucks to own - amazing considering its offering.

Buy it? Of course! Why wouldn't you?

Back To Eden breaks it down in simple terms - we need to cleanse our system with the elements that were found in the Garden Of Eden. When my first friends started taking some of the twenty-one elements that are espoused in this book, they were amazed by the results. It was this and a few other publications that inspired me to come up with my life-saving product.

Anyone who wishes to understand the components of the human body should read this book - as it is the "bible" of the physical body - what the holy bible is to the soul.

Read it.

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in their health. It is comprehensive without being overwhelming or confusing. It is plainly written and will answer any question regarding diet and nutrition that you may have. It also contains useful information on herbs and many formulations you can make at home. I have countless nutrition and herbal books in my library, yet this is the one I reach for the most.

The Original and still the Best!

My Grandmother gave me a copy of this book in 1973 for my 12th birthday. She had used it for many years already and was one of the healthiest people I ever knew. He writes in a very easy to understand way that even at 12 years old, I could understand most of it. I loved the recipes and have used many of them. I still make Soy milk the old fashioned way as he described. This is a must read for anyone interested in health. Much of what he talks about are simple safe and most of all work. I highly recommend it. If more people used the info in this book they would never need to diet or take most drugs to be healthy. God Bless and good health!

Great book with SOOOO many different drinks. Many that I had no idea were even out there. It also goes into detail about different kinds of glasses, types of mixers, methods of stiring and mixing and even garnishes. A small section in the back on how to plan a drinking party. All around a nice book to have for those not familiar with alcoholic beverages (mixed)

This book is indispensable! It contains recipes for old-fashioned cocktails (and their history) as well as new "foofy" drinks. I much prefer it over Mr Boston for its variety. I enjoy drinks that are simple and use bitters or aperitifs, and this book has plenty of them! It also includes non-alcoholic drinks for the tee-totaler.

I would recommend this book for anyone looking to build their bar and learn how to make some delicious drinks that go far beyond the boring martini-bar cocktail.

This was a great book. I just wish it had listed the drinks by alcohol ingredients. But overall, I loved it.

Pros: Awesome book. Easy to follow. Cheaper than bar-tending sites offer.

Cons: It doesn't have EVERY drink you're looking for, but it has a good enough selection you won't be disappointed.
