Here is a cookbook for people that like to eat well but do not have the time for long lengthy recipes. I have made several dishes in this book , they are delicious and simple. It is refreshing to use a cookbook that produces such flavorful meals without hours of labor and just a few ingredients.

I love this cookbook! Great photos, great, varied recipes, and not dumbed down as with some seemingly "international" cookbooks (which recommend subbing soy sauce for fish sauce and the like). I've liked everything I've made from this one, and while I often take longer than the author suggests, it's because I'm slow on prep. I still consider this a "quick cook" cookbook, and one of the best.

I have many cookbooks but I love this one for empowering busy moms
(and dads) to cook with fresh healthy ingredients and throw out the processed food that lurks in everyone's kitchen. The recipe for "nutricious nuggets" was worth buying the book for on it's own. My kids love it!!!

I LOVE this cookbook. I purchased it for my family and we have utilized this cookbook more than any other we have in our house. We now make smoothies almost daily. I tell everyone about this and would recommend it to anyone who wants to cook healthy. It's fun to enjoy the kitchen again.

the title had me buying it. though my kids weren't thrilled with some of the dishes I liked, there's enough recipes in there for the family. If you liked this book for family-friendly food, you'll love "The Frantic Woman's Guide to Feeding Family and Friends" because it gives fun ideas for you to do with your kids and lots of shortcuts in the kitchen that saves time.

In general, I love the book. Particularly the intro full of motivating and inspiring ideas. I've made quite a few recipes and would say that a handful are now regulars. I have two copies - one at work and one at home. If I can't think of anything to make for dinner, it's at my fingertips to look through before I leave for home. I love it!

I just re-ordered several copies of this to pass along to both my "foodie" Mom friends, and those that are kitchen-phobic and hurried in their lives. It is full of quick, easy, healthy ideas (who would have thought to freeze peanut butter sandwiches, or sneak nutritional yeast into chicken tenders?!). I recommend this to anyone who is looking for healthy meal and snack ideas that families will truly enjoy.

I discovered Toddler Cafe through a post on 101 [...] and ordered it right away. I have a 13 month old and am trying to introduce her to a variety of foods, flavors and textures. So far, we've tried chickadee chick pea cakes and rainbow rice balls. Give the girl plain old carrots on a plate and they end up rejected on the floor, but mix them up with lots of other goodies in chickpea cakes and they get eaten with great enthusiasm. Oh yes and 'dad' thought the rainbow rice was pretty yummy too! The book is full of lots of creative and interesting stuff and I'm looking forward to trying lots of things!

My daughter is 16 months and not a bad eater but she seems to eat the same things over and over. I made the rice balls with beets and she loved them, as did I! I have also made the pumpkin ravioli and the pea pancakes. A word of advice, DON'T change the recipes. The author knows what she is doing. I tried to make the ravioli with baby food because I could not find frozen pumpkin and it was a disaster. I did however start to experiment with my own "toddler cafe" ideas. Some worked and some did not. I made potatoes pancakes in a mini muffin tin (so I did not have to fry them) and it worked GREAT! I can't wait until my daughter is a little older so she can make these fabulous recipes with me. Keep on cooking!

After trying many of the recipes with my three kids, I brought it when my daughter's third grade brownie troop was planning meals for their camping trip. They loved the banana hot dogs we ate after our 2 mile hike. I loved that they were so easy to make. I had prebagged the PB and brought squirt jelly and whole wheat buns. The girls had fun passing the "mustard" and we whipped up 18 sandwiches with no utensils in the woods. Plus they had each had a banana to help their muscles. Thanks for the creative idea Jennifer.

The Toddler Cafe is an endless source of inspiration for my family. With clever recipe names like "Lord of the Apple Rings," "Swamp Soup," and "Top-o-the Mushroom to Ya," it's easy to lure your kids into the kitchen to prepare and *eat* these dishes. We've loved cooking many of the recipes together. I've also found this a remarkable guide to stocking my pantry in order to always have healthy choices on hand and readily available. With everything from tips for encouraging your children to really be a part of the process and clean up afterwards (yes!), this one is a keeper.

As a former early childhood educator, I was a little dismayed about the trend to sneak healthy foods into children's meals. In my years of working with young children, I found that their palates are much more sophisticated than we know.

By preparing a limited menu and keeping them out of the process, parents unwittingly create picky eaters who'll explode at anything but chicken fingers, cereal, and peanut butter sandwiches. If you cook yummy healthy meals, they will eat them! Of course, some foods might take a few tries and incarnations, but isn't that how you learned to love avocados, brussel sprouts, fish, and other formerly yucky stuff?

I love that Jennifer Carden has such respect for the littlest budding gourmets. I really enjoyed flipping through the inventive and inspired recipes in this book. Can't wait to try them out with my favorite tiny chefs!

I have truly enjoyed this cookbook! Since my husband decided to go vegan I was at a loss at to what to make for dinner every night; I mean, you can only eat so much pasta before you start packing on the pounds. The objective was to get healthy, not add more weight. So I went in search of a cookbook that could help me with protein supplements, variety, and more veggies. I made the best purchase in this cookbook.
Yes, many of the products used in the recipes are not things you find in all grocery stores but with access to a health food store you will be okay. And the dishes will be worth the extra trip.
I love the menu style in which this cookbook is written. Everything is laid out for you; it could not be easier. I find the recipe I want to make, photocopy the page and take it to the grocery store with me.
The book is also divided into the four seasons; spring, summer, fall and winter. This way you are more apt to find the fruits and veggie within the recipe most plentiful and at their peck of flavor.
Make the purchase, you won't regret it. Excellent photos as well!

The recipes my wife and I have made have been great. I like the organization by season. The "meal plans" are often too much for just the two of us. We usually just cook the entree. I'm also happy that these vegetarian meals don't rely too heavily on dairy products.

The only reason this book doesn't get 5 stars is because there isn't a photo for every dish. The photos in the book, however, are nice.

I love this cookbook!!!! The recipes are healthy, fast and always delicious. I have finally started going through the cookbook and making every dish because even when something sounds iffy, its great. I mean steamed cheese stuffed romaine leaves over a kidney bean tomato sauce...I don't know...but delicous and a crowd pleaser. I use the book often for entertaining and sometimes feel like I'm serving take out because the recipes take so little time, but taste and look like I spent hours slaving away.

Its really terrific; I can't recommend it highly enough!!

This is an amazing cookbook. Filled with delicious, fool-proof recipes and wholesome ingredients, "Fresh Food Fast" has become a regular part of our work-week routine. Though we try to do most of our cooking over the weekend (reheating meals during the week), there are invariably nights when we prefer to cook something fresh after a long day at work. This book gives us a wide array of options arranged by season, from black bean & zucchini quesadillas to bruschetta with goat cheese, olive, tomatoes and thyme. This past Friday we made Berley's 'Thai-Style Tofu & Vegetables in Spicy Coconut Broth with Jasmine Rice' - it was divine. We felt like we'd been transported to a gourmet, five star Thai restaurant, only we had the pleasure of enjoying such a satisfying meal in our comfy clothes. :) The only downside to this book is that most dishes require a hefty amount of produce, which, admittedly, can get expensive. Nevertheless dishes in this book are so delicious that careful planning can work around this, using leftover produce in other meals and reheating uneaten portions later in the week. Overall I love this book - how could I not appreciate the feat of satisfying, perfectly flavored meals that can be made in under an hour? (And yes, they really can be finished in under 1 hour, many in under 40 minutes.)

This is a cute little book. It's always tough to buy gifts for your co-workers because you can easily go so wrong, but I bought this for my boss (who has children) and it was absolutely perfect. The book is adorable, the ideas are so imaginative, and it's a great way to encourage little kids to start healthy eating habits with the imaginative use of vegetables (it makes the vegetables gain so much personality). With all of the junk food marketing targeted at children, this is a refreshing change to see healthy fruits and vegetables presented as an equally enticing alternative.

Here is another wonderful little book of fruit and vegetable art that can't fail to enchant adults and children alike. This one is all about vehicles: trains, buses, cars, trucks, aircraft, boats, all created from common vegetables, piloted and ridden by mushroom-, radish-, scallion-, and banana-people, among others. Each page is good for a chuckle and a second look, don't miss cauliflower Santa in a pear sleigh pulled by a ginger reindeer! This is a child's picture book to be sure, for children of all ages. As in all the other books in this series, the illustrations are very creative. Much of the fun is identifying the foods depicted in each scene. Look carefully or you might miss the parsley tree on the edge of the hot balloon page. Children can't help but get caught up in the game. The text is short and snappy, simple rhymes and easy rhythm for reading. It's a book suitable for group reading or quiet time with your toddler on your lap.

I was very satisfied with this cookbook that I saw in a bookstore but got on Amazon for half the price.

So far I have made 3 of the recipes (the ratatouille stew, tuna sandwiches, and salmon with leeks) and they have all been delicious. They were also easy to make and the ingredients were not hard to find or expensive.

The recipes are healthy while still having lots of flavor, so your family will likely enjoy them.

The only thing I might object to would be the use of some artificial or highly processed ingredients (like canned salmon or some prepackaged foods), but these wouldn't be hard to replace. It just might require a little extra time, but if you prefer to eat natural/organic foods, these recipes could be easily modified.

I would definitely recommend this cookbook.

I bought this book when I got married in an effort to help my husband and I support a more healthy lifestyle (ok, we wanted to lose some weight!). This book has by far exceeded my expectations--i use it at least three to four times a week!
the highlights:
-meals that truly can be prepared quickly
-"normal" ingredients that I can find at a regular grocery store and won't sit in my fridge for months after using them once
-truly tasty recipes that rarely taste "lowfat"
-a wide variety of recipes with a multitude of flavors and tastes that suit both the adventureous eater or a more conservative palate.
-directions that are easy to follow with helpful information sidebars. Even you 'non-cooks' out there can use this book!
-It lists nutrition info with each recipe, so you know exactly how many calories and how much fat you're taking in with each dish.

The book is divided into sections for each type of food (ie chicken, fish, breads, etc), and it has a pretty good index in the back so it is easy to find things.
The only thing I would do different is that the entrees don't list suggestions for sides, which would be helpful for those of us who don't have an intuition for that sort of thing.
A book that does do this is "Make it in Minutes", a book by weight watchers that is my second favorite cookbook. Ignore the WW thing, and pick this book up too. It has some great recipes as well!

This cookbook has it all! Normal recipes, easy to follow large print, beautiful glossy pictures and pages, and nutrional information. It tells you to use yogurts etc instead of sour cream and healthier versions of cooking. It has general calorie information for foods, and general cooking tips and suggestions for things you can throw into the recipe if you have leftovers. Something I have never seen before. It has tips on how to spot good produce and the right cuts of meats. I can never seem to find recipes in other books I have bought that I would actually use, but I have used this book several times. I have made the meatloaf several times, and everytime my family loves it. I like it because it tells you that you can use breadcrumbs or smashed crackers as I stated above, it gives options in the recipe, with tips above the recipe. Most cookbooks don't do that. I would reccommend this to a beginner or a parent that doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen after a long day at work, like me.

Fascinating book that delves deeply into how that hamburger, potato chip or cookie made its way into your home and stomach. These are things most of us have wondered about, but never really knew or cared why. A section of the book is dedicated to how that cookie or barbeque sauce got its flavor in a labratory and helps explain those long list of weird ingredients we never really understood or wanted to know about. That is all there really is to say about this book. If you want to know where all those items on your supermarket shelf and fast food restaraunts came from, read it. If you have any sort of conscience and would rather not know and enjoy the foods you eat, run away. If you are one of the many overweight Americans, this might give you some insight as to why your diet is a problem. This was made into a movie, that summarized the book, but left out tons of things as most movies do. Watching the movie would give you a very basic idea of what to expect.

While this paragraph does not cover the book review a real lot, I want to pass on how it has changed my life; I was overweight due to fast foods, crappy snacks, soda and inactivity. I thought drinking Vitamin Water was healthy. I dont know if could eat fast food anymore knowing the suffering that went into a 1 dollar hamburger. Ok, I might on a rare occasion, but the book even mentions that these fast food restaurants are really designed for a 1-2 times a week visit from the executives of these companies. For 2 weeks now I went to mostly organic foods, fruit and vegetables, water and less bread. I have had filet mignon and meatloaf 1 time each. Its not hard with a little effort. I exercised with a treadmill and video. I lost 10 pounds from 203 to 193 at 5' 10" and 43 years old.

I would like to thank the author for changing my life, which was no easy feat to accomplish.

This book describes the growth of the fast food / burger industry in America, and the consequences from fast food's popularity. The author covers labor practices (and malpractices) in the cattle growing and food processing industries, food regulation, dietary effects, and health hazards like E.Coli and mad cow.

The book is very well written, in my opinion. I found the opening stories about Cheyenne Mountain and the rise of the burger industry in California fascinating. Some of the personal stories of illegal immigrants in the food processing industry were also interesting, although I feel the author emphasized them too much. I personally was more interested in the larger history and practices of the industry and when the personal effects for me as a consumer could be. That was also covered - I just wish some other parts had been shorter.

The book is not indiscriminate leftist McDonalds bashing -- in fact, at the end the author acknowledges some industry-changing positive steps McD has taken to insure better beef quality, and even goes on to praise In-N-Out Burger, my favorite burger chain in California :)

Very good reading, you will not regret buying or borrowing it.

After years of hearing about it from my mother I'm finally read this books. I'm glad I did but it wasn't perfect. The second half about the common practices of meat produces both in and out of the slaughterhouses was good and something everyone should read. The first half however I had a hard time getting through. I didn't find the part on the beginning/growth interesting, nor did I enjoy the discussion of the sociological and economic effects of the fast food industry. He just spend way too long whining about how big companies are killing off the "American farmer" relying almost entirely on the 'this is how it used to be so it's best' argument. The book breaks down into two parts; skip the first half but the second is a must read for everyone.

I know kids that buy Taco Bell for lunch religiously at school, or domino's pizza; I was never fortunate enough to spend a $4 on lunch everday and came with packed carrots and a turkey sandwich. After reading Fast Food Nation I am so thankful that I am even limited to eating fast food on a rare weekend.I agree that it is very convenient for fast paced lives but Schlosser has released what people sacrifice for their bodies for their own convenience. I look back in disgust at the Hot Lunches I begged my parents for in school; us kids would complain that the fried chicken was sometimes purple or awkwardly brown; and now because of Schlosser's book I relize that its just not apparent in a bad kitchen staff. Fast Food Nation provides the trueth about what we put into our bodies and honestly is trying to help America not be the number one country with people with weight issues and Burger King, McDonalds or Taco Bell within every neighborhood. In addition, I've always loved $.89 tacos or buritto supremes at Taco Bell... but I've now decided to change my diet and stick to my own prepared food...or my mothers will be much much better for me and my body. Upon graduation from Georgia Tech's building construction program in 1982, I went to work for Nick Ganaway. One of the many reasons I selected his company was his obvious knowledge of business. Even more, I appreciated the motivation he placed in us (and himself) to always become better as contractors and as businessmen. We met frequently to "log in" new discoveries, efficiencies, risks, and methods of profitability that he had wisely accumulated for us. As I "ventured out" into the world and developed my own business with very little experience, I quickly noticed that although I was a "great" project manager that running a construction company was an entirely different issue. For example, do you understand the unique requirements of the construction firm owner? Terms in the project owner's construction agreement that can unfairly shift major risk onto your plate and what to do about them? How to ensure that you get paid for change orders? What to do when hard times suddenly strike (and they will)? After 25 years of experience in operating a commercial construction company, Mr. Ganaway explains chapter-by-chapter these and every other risk area you must manage if you are going to survive in construction. I know these explanations well as they ring in my mind from discussions with Mr. Ganaway concerning my very first projects and through calling for help with running my own construction business. You will feel like you're having these same discussions with him as you read this book. Every contractor, project manager, and construction student should read it. Today I use this very text to teach our students at Georgia Tech's building construction program how to run a business, as well as consulting in the same area. His principles work!

An added bonus to this text is the final chapter, where Mr. Ganaway makes the case for specializing in chain store construction. To "outsiders" who have not reviewed this market segment, I think you will be surprised at the benefits. If you are not already specializing in a niche market, this chapter is sure to start you thinking about it.

This is the first straightforward, down-to-earth book on how to run a construction business that I have come across. A realistic account of what it takes to start an enterprise and what it's like to be a contractor. Anyone contemplating starting their own construction company should read this before attempting it and every contractor already working at it should study Nick's work to learn how to do it better and to realize that they are not alone when they discover just how challenging and difficult the struggle for success can be. Everyone associated with the construction industry should read this book to gain an understanding of how the business really works.

If you are a person that is just starting out in the Construction industry, this book can help guide you in the right direction. Many mistakes that I have made in the past 10 years are covered in these pages. I wish I would have had this book back then. It would have made our company grow and prosper without the glitches. I highly recommend this book.

This is a truly outstanding cookbook, the one that I have relied on the most for a decade. I feel lucky to have bought it. The recipes for the most part, don't call for a lot of exotic expensive ingredients. The recipes are doable for everyday meals but very well crafted, having just enough of a gourmet touch that the food tastes superb, you feel like a great cook and you won't feel embarrassed to serve them to guests.

It's the kind of book that has lots of recipes that you'll make more than once because they're tasty, not too difficult and when you eat the results, you feel really nourished and cared for. Martha Rose Shulman's presentation style and storytelling is masterful as well, making the cookbook interesting and pleasurable to read.

I'm so sad that this book is out of print. My paperback copy is falling apart and I'd love a spiral bound replacement. I can still use mine, but I was hoping to order two or three copies for friends who liked the food I made using this cookbook.

This is one of the best cookbooks that I have ever used. I particularly like the explanations of various foods and the shopping lists that Ms. Shulman includes in her book. The seasonal menus are excellent and really help me to plan meals that are balanced. I've recommended this book to many of my relatives and friends.

I love this cookbook. When I was a college student, I could putter around with Moosewood recipes for hours and feel great accomplishment. Now, I work, and have three daughters, so there's not much extra time. The recipes in this book are tasty, and QUICK! The seasonal menu ideas are very helpful too. There are also guidelines for lowering fat/salt contents of many recipes. A great cook book!

TRY IT !! YOU'LL LOVE IT !!
