Now there is real hope for all alcoholics who want to quit!

Review Date: 2008-10-08
I wish every health care professional, social worker, psychologist, member of the clergy, and alcoholic or their family could get their hands on this book and try the cure! What hope! What joy! For anyone who knows someone who is in the grip of alcohol addiction and wants their life back this is the book.

The options available to alcoholics up to now have been limited to detoxification and abstinence. There are numerous programs from AA to food and other therapies designed to help people to resist their craving for alcohol but the program outlined in this book (the Sinclair Method) provides a safe medical alternative which will cure the alcoholic of their cravings over a period of time. The irresistible craving for alcohol is both a learned behavior and a disease and this program provides alcoholics with an understanding of how that behavior can be unlearned and the craving extinguished with a safe generic drug. It is difficult to believe that there is a safe effective cure for this debilitating disease available for anyone who wants to get the prescription. It is difficult to believe that all the pain and suffering associated with alcoholism can be a thing of the past. What is not difficult to understand is that when something sounds too good to be true people will doubt that it is true. In order to accept this program people will have to unlearn much that they believe to be true about alcoholism. They will need to unlearn that the only way to treat alcoholism is through abstinence. They will need to unlearn that the only way to overcome a drinking problem is by submitting to a higher power. They will have to unlearn that in order to stay healthy the alcoholic must remain abstinent. What they will have to learn is that as long as the alcoholic is taking his or her medication before they take that first drink they are actually drinking their way to a cure. They will have to learn that this medication can provide a way for the alcoholic to safely and slowly detoxify and reach a point where alcohol is no longer the major focus in their lives.

Dr. Eskapa presents all the information a person needs to get the cure for alcoholism. It is simple and safe. The book is easy to read while providing a logical scientific explanation of why and how the process works. It is well referenced and indexed and useful for alcoholics themselves as well as professionals who work in treatment programs or others in the medical profession.

I will be purchasing additional copies to share with friends and colleagues.

Dr. Eskapa's work describes a promising new approach to the treatment of one of the oldest and most plaguing problems in medicine and society, i.e., addiction to alcohol. Dr. Eskapa, a clinical psychologist with accomplishments in the area of behavior modification, was inspired to search for an effective treatment for alcoholism by the suffering and eventual early death of a close friend. This tragedy led Dr. Eskapa to "discover" the method of Dr. David Sinclair, a researcher in Finland, who wrote the foreword to this volume. This book describes the Sinclair approach in clear layman's terms. Eskapa has put alcoholism in the context of recent scientific discoveries over the last few decades relating human behavior to receptors in the brain. Many addictive behaviors are dependent on the building up of a common pathway in the brain, related to naturally occurring endorphins activating opioid receptors. These endorphins make us feel good but are dangerous when coupled to alcohol intake in people prone to addiction. They change the "wiring" of the brain, but fortunately this change is reversible based on the new method. Dr. Eskapa covers many aspects of the use of naltrexone for alcohol abuse and explains why it must be taken with alcohol in order to be effective. At first this sounds counterintuitive (that one has to continue drinking somewhat in order to stop drinking), but after reading this book one understands the beautiful logic. The book is written in an easily understandable manner, yet is firmly based on solid scientific information of the highest caliber. This method has the potential to relieve the suffering of countless individuals, and it is important that it be widely publicized. It is not a "commercial" for a product, and the author has made it clear that the patent held by Dr. Sinclair has recently expired. Thus, the main motive behind this writing is to help people overcome the problem faced by Dr. Eskapa's late friend. I recommend the book "The Cure for Alcoholism" for those with an addiction problem and for medical professionals, as well as for those who are simply interested in learning more about how the brain works.

A New Paradigm

Review Date: 2008-10-01
Dr. Eskapa's important new book explains the quiet revolution that is occurring in our understanding of how people become alcoholics and how to treat alcoholism. To make a long story short, the field of alcoholism research and treatment has been divided into two opposing camps: those who believe that alcoholism is best thought of as a kind of medical illness (for example, AA) and those who believe that alcoholism is best thought of as a learned (very) bad habit (many psychologists). What Dr. Eskapa explains in clear, non-technical language is how new research shows that neither one of these views is completely correct--but that both of them are partly correct! That is, alcoholism is like a disease because certain people are genetically predisposed to become alcoholics. But alcoholism is also a learned behavior--even someone who is genetically predisposed to become an alcoholic will not become an alcoholic if they never try alcohol. This new paradigm is the basis for the cure for alcoholism--a combination of a widely available drug treatment and a behavioral strategy--that is clearly described in Dr. Eskapa's brilliant book.

This book argues very convincingly that alcoholics must unlearn their addiction to alcohol, and the best way to do this is by drinking alcohol while they are simultaneously taking a drug that blocks the biological reward system in the brain that underlies addiction; this process of unlearning is called extinction by psychologists. The research from over 70 clinical studies shows that alcoholics can unlearn or reverse their biological addiction by continuing to drink alcohol while simultaneously taking a safe, non-addicting medication to block the jolts of reinforcement in the brain produced by the release of endorphins each time alcohol is consumed. By following this plan - of ALWAYS taking the medication before drinking, craving and actual drinking levels reduce dramatically. In other words, alcoholics can transform themselves into either moderate drinkers or nondrinkers, whichever they prefer. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from the tragedy of alcoholism--both alcoholics and their families.

Having had a dear friend who used this method after having tried AA, rehab numerous times, and everything else, let me tell you firsthand, the Sinclair Method works. The Cure for Addiction now means that one doesn't have to travel to Finland for treatment. One doesn't have to abandon life as they know it to endure 30 days of rehab or attend AA meetings; the Sinclair Method integrates into normal life and no one has to know you're on it if you choose to keep it private. The Sinclair Method gave my friend back his life, and all those love him, reason to proselytize it in any way possible.

We purchased this book after eating at Sansei in Maui and Oahu our first time to Hawaii and love the book. If you have never eaten at Sansei you are really missing out. Chef DK has created an amazing menu. Everything is delicious. If you are heading to Maui or Oahu, make sure you put Sansei down as a "to-do" while you are there. On Sunday and Monday night they open at 5PM and everything on the menu is 50% off for one hour. You have to get their by 4PM or so in order to get in, but it is well worth the wait.

Chef Kodama and Bonnie Friedman share all of Chef Kodama's secrets and do a great job illustrating how to create traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine. They explain how and why each ingredient is used and translate ingredients throughout the book so you don't have to keep looking up terms when trying a new recipe. The book is simple enough for beginners to follow, yet offers some contemporary (and slightly more complex) dishes for the advanced chef.

If you love sushi and want to start making it at home, by this book.

I've been to his restaurant in Maui and the food was fabulous. So good in fact that I bought this book. While I could use more examples of fish to swap for things only a Hawaiian can get I find the recipes so easy a beginner can use them to make some fantastic food. I highly recommend this book.

For beginners, there's a nice introduction to different basic japanese foods and rolling techniques with pictures. There are recipes for sushi, and small and large entrees. I've been to one of the two Sansei restaurants on Maui and the recipes from this book definately cover some of the best things on their menu. The only minor change I could see to make it better is more information about using pre-made grocery store sauces instead of making everything from scratch.

Rollicking, rowdy, not infrequently ribald, and occasionally romantic --Richard Sterling takes us with him as he wanders over half the world and twenty years, eating, drinking, gathering pepper with headhunters and, er --rollicking. Lots of recipes for food and drinks and I've never had a crash with a Sterling recipe, either. You just have to admire a guy who can devise a recipe substitute for Bornean Red Warrior Ants, though he overdoes the tarragon a bit, in my opinion. (Different Warrior Ants?)

Sterling's pursuit of culinary exotica - he particularly likes spicy food - has taken him all over the world. He began his odyssey, and begins this unusual and entertaining book of essays and recipes, with his navy tour of southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

The early essays of his youthful navy days - quitting smoking while moving nuclear missiles ship to ship during typhoon conditions, a bittersweet dalliance with a Malaysian prostitute, in pursuit of pepper among Borneo headhunters - are hilarious, moving, and riveting.

As the years pass, his travels become more food focused, and the anecdotes more general and nostalgiac. But as his knowledge of food becomes more sophisticated, so do the recipes. And Sterling remains game for anything, including fried locusts, blood soup and dog, specifically puppy. And he includes recipes for everything - with substitutions for less adventurous palates.

There are numerous mouthwatering curries, satays, stews, soups and streetfoods includng traditonal dishes like pad Thai, chile prawns, green mango salad and Cambogee beef, along with Navy classics like boiled coffee and El Rancho beef stew. Exotica includes fish grilled with large red ants and two versions of grasshopper or cricket snacks. Great stories and good food.

Although I second the other revierw here, I must add that this book could be some 100 pages shorter and still hit the mark. The way it is, Lambrecht uses too much words to deliver his message.
Also, because of the subject matter itself, the book is a bit outdated.
Other than that, good reading material.

I was a little wary when purchasing this book that the entire premise would be zealotish anti-GMO and anti-biotechnology. The quotes on the cover seemed to indicate that would also be the case. I was extremely pleased to find a very balanced reporting of both sides of the genetic engineering debate. The author has been a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for over 2 decades, and has been covering the debate and progress since its inception. His style is engaging and fast-paced, with humor and human interest sprinkled in to lighten a complex topic. He seems to lean toward the side of caution, but gives full reporting to the biotech companies' claims and biotech's proponents' enthusiasm. I personally am hopeful of the promise and potential of this technology, but this book helped me understand opponents' fears in a very sympathetic way. Particularly frightening was the disclosure of some of the big biotech firms' less-than-open trials and political influences. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the issues involved in genetically engineering our food.

With so many cookbooks, the layout can really turn me off of a book. The first thing that struck me when I flipped open to a random page how it drew me in. Most recipes include a bit of the author's personal history with the dish and many introduce with the "old way" of making the dish as well as present a new way that is less labor intensive. Often she will follow up with a recipe for those who want to try the traditional method.

A very thorough book that explores local ingredients, explains when they were served, what you might find in your supermarket and then clearly describes how to prepare the dish.

I'm a recent transplant to Texas and have had my eyes opened to Mexican and Tex-Mex food. This book introduces Norteno cuisine that is found in many traditional border homes. I couldn't wait to try my hand at these recipes.

Also, if you're someone who likes to read cookbooks for enjoyment, you'll love this one.

Of of the few, rare, authentic looks at some exceptionally wonderful food. The book is beautiful, and enhances the feel for understanding the landscape and people that authentic south Texas ranch cooking comes from. Thank God Melissa is secure enough in tradition that she did not feel the need to throw Mangos in everything to prove she was a creative chef. I have pet goats that were adopted as orphans, and they are very sweet and loving, so I no longer eat Cabrito, but have had it enough in the past to appreciate the recipes.

There was a kid so scared of the counseoer he wore a scarf all up arond his neck. Two days later they found the counsler go into Mrs.Jeepers basment. Then the next day at school the principal told the kids the counsler had to leave. Then he said he had to fly. So they know it must mean something. They also remembered that his hands were cold.

What partly happens is their principal tells them to go to the nurse's office. Liza and Melody are in shock because Ben is faking he is sick! Do you think Mr.Drake is really a Dracula? Do you think Mr. Drake really pushed Ben? Read the book to find out.

Strange occurrences and weird adults are nothing new (really) to the 3rd grade of Bailey Elementary School. However, when the thirsty new school counselor shows up with pale skin, pointed teeth and a CAPE, the gang gets nervous. Could this be the famous Dracula come to their school?? He DOES like to sit in the dark in his office and most of the gang thinks their own teacher is a vampire!!

But, would a vampire-especially one as famous and ancient as Dracula himself-drink pink lemonade?? The gang is about to find out!!

This marks the 16th installment in the Bailey School Kids series, and is definitely one of the more creepy books in the series. Having a vampire for a teacher is bad enough, but having TWO in your school is asking for trouble! Especially if one is the most famous vampire in the world with an unquenchable thirst!

Of course, the books are all written with the possibility that the supernatural creatures (vampires, genies, ghosts and even a few aliens and a pirate) could be nothing more than eccentric people. Of course, it's hard to believe it, and that's where the series' appeal comes from.

Like other Bailey Kids books, "Dracula Doesn't..." is a quick read for advanced readers and adults. It is also a very good choice for beginning/intermediate readers who are looking for something silly and fun. A number of reluctant readers have decided that reading actually CAN be fun after picking up one of the books in this series (there's currently over 40 of them, at last count). It isn't necessary to begin with #1 and progress to the end, for each stand easily by themselves, though there are characters that appear in more than one book.

All in all, it's a fun series and as a reading teacher I've found myself hooked on these things and will likely wind up reading (and reviewing) the whole series. Get one yourself and see if you don't enjoy following along with the gang!

I took Prof. Boyer's Geography of Wine course last spring (this was one of the textbooks), and learned more than my parents or my sister (who worked in a wine cellar) knew about wine. They now look to me to order the wine when we're out to dinner! The book is highly informative and entertaining, and great for someone (or better yet, a group) that wants to get into wine without worrying about all of the "wine snobbery" that's out there--this book is def. the way to go.

I took Professor Boyer's "Geography of Wine" class which was an absolute blast! This book was just an extension of his uncanny personality. It has sparked a true passion for wine that I never knew existed. I actually own 2 copies of this book because I enjoyed it just that much. Such a simple introduction to wine, starting with what you're drinking out of and how come. All the way to a description of the wine you're drinking (as you're reading)by the grape itself. There are simple charts for you to fill out as you read with your own description of taste, color, smell, etc to compare with the notes that he has about the wine. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get into the way of the vine or for the already more experienced drinkers out there to get a deeper understanding of wine and the world that revolves around it. I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

It seems ironic that most books about wine talk more about the wine itself than drinking it. As the title suggests, it doesn't beat around the vine. The book must be read with a glass of wine in hand, and some chapters require multiple bottles. This means, or should mean, reading it can become a group event. My drinking counterparts and I learned most of what we know about wine from the detailed drinking lessons, which can be done in most any order. If you are a rookie wine drinker and just want some basic knowledge, this is a perfect book. If you then want to delve further into the world of wine, all you need to do is keep reading. The illustrations, the invaluable knowledge, and the easy to follow directions make it a great addition to any healthy-kitchen. I have tried quite a few of the drinks and find them very tasty and also true-to-their word--coughs have stopped, eyes have brightened, skin has cleared, etc. It's very well-written, informative, and nice to look at. The only thing that is a little disconcerting is the amount of sugar required for some of the recipes--I'm sure Ms. McIntyre has a health related reason for doing this, but I prefer not to use that much sugar--I usually replace the sugar with a lower dose of much healthier organic honey. Great book though--I consume one of its drinks everyday.

Anne McIntyre not only filled Drink to Your Health with dozens of easy recipes for juices, teas, soups, and smoothies, she also included vibrant photographs of the fresh ingredients used in the recipes. Her book is a visual, as well as culinary, pleasure.

McIntyre starts with an explanation of why water is so important-our bodies are seventy-five percent water. We lose 3 quarts of water every day through normal functions like breathing, perspiring, and urinating. All that liquid must be replaced, and she offers healthy and delicious alternatives to simply drinking lots of plain water.

The next section includes a discussion of the primary ingredients used in the recipes. She describes each one completely, including a brief history of its use, the nutrients it contains, and all the good things it can do for the body. Spices, grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables all have a page in this section.

Recipes, classified by benefit offered, fill the rest of the book. McIntyre includes drinks for looking and feeling good, drinks for recovering from illness, and drinks for healing the soul and spirit.

Losing weight, clear eyes, great skin and hair, raising energy, stimulating the immune system, and boosting the brain are part of feeling good. Illnesses include clearing coughs and other cold symptoms, flu-busters, headaches, fevers, insomnia, arthritis, PMS, and many others. Drinks for relieving anxiety and stress, renewal, and helping depression round out the healing recipes.

I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of Nero's Nectar, a very simple recipe for relieving chest congestion due to a cold!

McIntyre ends with an appendix offering tips on things like selecting blenders and juicers, and choosing ingredients. (Yes, canned foods can be used if fresh isn't available.)

McIntyre says that "the recipes in [Drink to Your Health] are not just boring alternatives for teetotallers or health fanatics, but have been selected to stimulate the senses and scintillate the taste buds, at the same time improving health and vitality." Readers will find that her recipes provide an easy and delicious way to look and feel good.

Wow!! The best smoothie book I've read, with so much more.

I bought this book on vacation, and it was one of the best choices I've made in a long time. I could barely walk back to the hotel before opening it! Inside I first found a section on ingredients and their healing powers. Next, there's a huge recipe selection of smoothies, juices, teas, soups, and nonalcoholic drinks, organized by what health benifits they have. Lastly, there is an appendage talking about blenders and juicers, health, and other topics. The photographs in the book are clear and beautiful. Although every drink is delicious, I highly reccommend the Jamaican Grapefruit Spritz for weight loss and the smooothie with banana, honey, and nutmeg.

This is a fantastic book- a terrific resource and actually enjoyable to read! Gasnier's passion for flavours, scents, colours and textures really comes through in the text. He is very thorough in his descriptions and histories of the hundreds of libations- wonderful!
Contains sections on pairing wine with food, cocktails, martinis, layering drinks/shots, and various trivia on the origins of various liqueurs.
Love it!

This book is not only a must for any collector, but for the novice too. Its rich history of drinks is truly complimented by the illustrations. Information on buying, storing, and serving, is more than helpful. Above all else, this book is just beautiful. I gave it as a Father's Day present this year.

Mr. Gasnier, Master Sommelier and his team have really done a great job. This book is the most modern book that you can find internationally, about the huge world of drinks (wines, spirits, beers, cocktails). The way that the book is written is really interesting. It is at the same time simple but very-well presented. The photos of the book are just perfect. This book is a real "must" for drinks and cocktails lovers, and a very useful element for ambitious sommeliers.
