Finally A comprehensive well written approach to the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome! After several years working in the alcoholism treatment field, and having read many works aimed at increasing awareness, the Alcohol Withdrawal Treatment Manual is a breath of fresh air! Most publications to date have proven to be retreads of out-dated treatment stratagies. This work however has taken a bold new approach. Their AWS Typology has clearly defined how to treat the distinctly different symptoms related to alcohol withdrawal. They also have developed a tool to assess and monitor symptoms that seems to be incredibly accurate and easy to use. This is a major change from the tools that have previously been used. This was one of the most enlightning works i've read on the subject in many years. It is a MUST read for medical students, nurses, and counselors. If you work in the field of addiction this will be a welcome addition to your library.

This book covers topics from A to Z. It's like an "everything you ever wanted to know about addictions" manual. I'm going to use it for one of my social work classes. The only problem is that there's too much material to cover in one semester. The postive side of this is that students can continue to use the manual while they're in practice.

For those who have parents who have abused alcohol and who have either escaped the heritary factors or have inherited the problems caused by a parent's drinkling. Alcoholism is a complex interwining of factors that affects the parents as well as the children, often for generations upon generations. Recommended reading for those interested in alcoholism in general, women's alcoholism and fetal alcohol syndrome. Other suggested reading is this series, "Women and Alcoholism" also edited by Marc Galanter.

I first read this book in a typewritten, soft-bound compilation, and I still have the copy on my "frequently accessed" bookshelf. Although I have never met Dr. Whitfield, I feel as if I know him from this book, and as a result, I have held him in the highest esteem. I believe he is one of the first writers in the recovery field to bring a cogent, systematic transpersonal psychological perspective to the theory of addictions. At the time, his writing was a refreshing and exciting development, and openned many doors for further exploration.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an open spirituality and an interest in the complex task of recovery from traumatizing addictions and life circumstances.

This book is a must have for anyone struggling to break the cycle of alcoholism; families dealing with alcolism, and Social work team. It is an easy read and very enlightening. Several sections of the book, such as Chapter 1 - Alcohol and the Family was a candid look into a family's turmoil due to alcohol abuse. This book outlines in detail the "Alcohol Selection" in Chapter 2. The Ten Reasons to Stop Drinking were absolutely mind-blowing, in that no one can continue seeing alcohol in the same manner once the reasons have taken full adherence. By far, "Winning the Fight" was the chapter that indeed sets this book apart from all other "Alcohol" books that only provide the same things. Alocoholism: How to Live Life More Abundantly delivers! Highly recommended! This book will make a huge impact on not only recovery, but living the rest of life happy.

Excellent coverage of pharmaceutical compounding. This book includes tools, ingredients, sample recipes, and useful vocabulary on pharmaceutical compounding. It is an exceptional resource and guide for pharmacists intending to expand into compounding, breaking away from the traditional robotic-like duties of community pharmacies. It will help the pharmacist get started on this different, fun, and creative side of pharmaceutical service: compounding. Have fun!

This is a hilarious story, smart, well written and very Jamaican. I laughed until I cried. The author captures the fine line between comedy and tragedy in a riveting story. The dialogue is real, there's a riveting plot and you can't help but cheer for Alonso. He's a loveable underdog.

That cancer cell is a complex evolving creature is by now a well-known fact. The understanding of this complexity, although painfully scarce, is not an elusive goal, as in the future, in one way or another, all the therapeutical approaches will rely on this understanding. A current trend in pharmaceutical research and anti-cancer drug design is the discovery of new and new drugs with the hope that one day, one unique drug or a combination of drugs will be able to interrupt or to reverse any potentially malignant process. The same is true about anti-HIV therapy, where every year new compounds are tested or approved, while drug or multidrug resistance seems impossible to be overcome and consequently it is left as it is. The image of cancer cell resistance to our therapeutical attempts would have been incomplete if Dr. Kellen would have not given us a new book, in continuation of the Reversal of Multidrug Resistance in Cancer. Alternative Mechanisms of Multidrug Resistance in Cancer expands our knowledge beyond P-glycoprotein, as the hobby horse mechanism in tumor drug and multidrug resistance. In the same time, the book is a scary panorama of what a cancer cell could become when it has to defend itself against the xenobiotical therapeutics trying to disturb its life and function. References to P-glycoprotein are succinct in this book but one should keep in mind that any of the "nonclassical" MDR mechanisms described here could be associated with an increased P-gp activity in the cancer cell. Some of these mechanisms seem to be specific to malignant cells exposed to chemotherapeutics; among these, MRP protein(s) and function, topoisomerase II and I associated MDR and X-irradiation induced MDR, are discussed in detail. A pleasant surprise is the chapter on taxoids in multidrug resistance, in an era when taxol and taxoid-derived drugs are a most efficient new weapon in previously incurable cancers. Other mechanisms are less specifically induced by cancer chemotherapy and belong to a more general defensive response of cells exposed to various noxious compounds(glutathione S-transferases, DNA repair enzymes induced by DNA-damaging agents) or have an indirect effect on MDR -protein kinase C, as a major player in intracellular signaling, in this way influencing some of the putative MDR mechanisms, or bcl-2, whose contribution to the malignant phenotype is by preventing cell death when this should normally occur. Although not conclusive, one of the final chapters is an attempt to gather under the same roof all these apparently dispersed mechanisms which are, without doubt, tightly interconnected at a molecular level. The book is written in a lively and convincing style. Even if it leaves many questions without an answer, as is the case of the significance of occurrence of all these MDR mechanisms in the living organism, it is a strong pleading for a research which, for the future of cancer therapy, would eventually become even more important than discovering or designing new antitumour agents.

This book is a must have for the medical professional and the lay person alike. I personally use this wonderful book in my home-based clerical support and medical transcription business. I must have access to the correct spelling of thousands of medications. Sometimes, drugs are so close in their pronunciation that I find the ADI's USE section in telling me what the drug is used for MOST helpful to differieniate the correct medication my doctors are dictating. Therefore, I don't have to bother them, their nurses, or their staff to see which medication they meant. In other words, this book helps me to look good and effecient at my job - I like that! In case you haven't figured it out by now...I highly recommend this book!
