Those of us in the helping professions often deal with addicts of various types, to say nothing of those affected by another's addicition. Dr. Westreich illuminates the concept of addiction, while providing sensible, sensitive and highly useful advice on how those close to an addict can help. Refreshingly, the book is based in utter reality, and is highly pragmatic. I intend to reread it periodically to ensure the advice it offers remains fresh in my mind.

Bahamian female soulmates endure abandonment and cocaine.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-23
Conflicts do exist between the body, will, and spirits. Women play the role as primary holders of spiritual powers above men. It has been scientifically proven that human genetic history can only be traced for eons through the female of our species. So the Obeah witchdocter Barbey must find a way to locate Coranna using only her twenty three year old navel string.

When ever an agressive go-getter lover like Morganna attempts to return to a sweet, lil homey, in Coranna, there is bound to be conflicts on both sides. After all, in time two people can become strangers because of new experiences that bring on change and growth.

So stranger meets stranger. We all know about forgivness, anger, revelations, hurt and pain. Who gives? What about abandonment, anguish, mental abuse, loneliness, physical abuse, and just giving it all up to start all over again. But with soulmates, can love be denied. I pity Coranna. Then to top it off, she ends up with a sweet devoted teen lover in Sasha. She embodies the enduring lover.

When a man the likes of Knuckles with millions from the cocaine trade decides to work on your woman, you have problems. Yet sometimes it can be convenient, that is if the female couple wants to have a child along with lots of money. But which lover can stomach knowing that the money you spend belongs to a man. For the sake of love go out and get your own.

In 'HIGH' Coranna does try to get her own. Only, as in Bruce Porter's 'BLOW' she messes it up. The author, himself, a former cocaine addict gets down to the highs of the cocaine highs. So Coranna takes you on a ride.

The Bahamas of the eighties, with curruption among the highest of the government officials allows a most notorious Columbian cocaine kingpin a freehand in trafficking drugs to Florida. The officials facilitate all aspects of protection, even to work agaisnt the government of the United States. A butch lesbian Tomboy is the Columbian's, Bahamian-point-person. She is more ruthless than a man.

The United States Govenment and the DEA make it their business to stop the trafficking, but they always hindered by the Bahamian government. Then steps in NBC, and its investigative reporter Ross, who did indeed expose the great extent the Bahamians protected Columbian cocaine shipments.

The mystical side of this novel is overwhelming as Barbey must make contact with Coranna before his death, which is fast approaching. He must upload all of the spirits of the ancient worlds into her. Already Barbey was rescued from death by a spiritual seed Chiesne. In Chiesne, readers get a glimpse of pre-Christopher Colombus Bahamas and get a chance to live in harmony and nature with the Lucayans.

This is a great threatise from the Bahamas, and probably one of the most interesting pieces of fiction to come out of the Caribbean. 'High' details occult Obeah rituals and the trappings of the world pressured by modern United States of America.

The book shows that lesbian love can be enduring, and that spiritual forces do exist beyond.

I've seen so many Christian couples struggling with prodigal children. This book is a compilation of honest, gritty stories of love, hope and healing by those who've walked this heartbreaking walk. The transparent accounts are written by well-known leaders who were very nearly derailed by losing a child to drugs.

Besides those families touched by the drug epidemic, this book seems to indirectly provide hope for parents of all kinds of "far-country children." Shame and secrecy are two of Satan's most powerful tools. The book addresses alternatives to those. The chapters on "Keeping Your Marriage Healthy When Your Kids Aren't" could apply to any number of kid situations.

I try to keep a couple books on hand and I've never had such grateful feedback on a book-- it's filled with help and hope. The resources and addendum are worth their weight in gold. Buy more than one copy. This is one you'll want to share with hurting families.

I have purchased this book more than once. I have given it away a couple of times after reading it over and over. For "good" parents who have tried to love their kids and do their best, I think this is an excellent resource of encouragement and hope. While the authors don't give many specifics on how to deal with your substance abusing teen, they do offer the realization that other parents who have done their best still had kids who went astray. I have to say that it was no small thing in my mind that all 19 of the people discussed in this book grew up in two parent, church-going homes. As a divorced mom, I took a great deal of encouragement from that one thing.

Authors offer a website with other resources, as well as assistance in getting connected with a local support group of other parents like yourself. I think the sub-title says it all..."You are not alone..."

Hoops of Steel is a powerful and realistic portrayal of a high school senior and how he copes with life's difficulties. His problems range from the very serious (alcoholic father and shattered family) to the not-so-serious (zits and smelly feet). The author is honest in his approach and does not attempt to solve all of his main character's issues. Instead the main character struggles to make choices as people do in real world. Basketball is used as a vehicle for the story but it could just as easily have been any school activity. This should not be dismissed as "just another basketball story" since it is much deeper than that.

Jackson is beginning his senior year with one goal: To play basketball and get a college scholarship to a division I college. He lives with Granny (who is not his actual grandmother, but rather a kind neighbor who took him in when things "got crazy" about a year ago). Even though Jackson didn't play basketball during the previous year's season due to a broken hand, he's been honing his skills with friends from his school's rival team. Even though he still battles ferocious acne and shyness, Jackson feels he is handling life well and is looking forward to when basketball practice begins.

That's when the coach informs Jackson that he won't be a starting player. He is the only good senior and the coach's goal is to develop the younger players in hopes of a winning season next year.

And Jackson wonders why everything he touches turns out bad. He's separated from his family, won't be able to get that scholarship, and he is being shunned by most people at his school. He even considers quitting the team. On several occasions.

Will Jackson chase his dream when there doesn't seem to be any hope? Will others' actions choose the destiny of his life or will he be in charge? That's a tough question for a high school senior to figure out.

Many readers will relate to Jackson's self-doubt and will understand why he might give up. Readers will also cheer for Jackson as he makes small steps towards recovering from his turbulent past and to live for himself rather than others.

HOOPS OF STEEL is a realistic book full of real pain and real surprises. It is also filled with good friends, hope, and determination. If only everyone would continue to do what they love even if it might not make their dreams come true.

There are so many memoirs out there in the publishing world today, but Mr. Woodward has crafted a beautiful, honest portrayal of his life toiling as a heroin addict in 1950's LA. While the world was duped by James Frey, Woodward's story is 100% genuine, and written with no self-pity, but rather from the heart and soul, much like a piece of jazz. A definite must have in the summer beach bag, for those searching for a book with depth.

I love how this book has everything I would want to tell someone trying to get sober all in the same book. The first thirty days can seem like an eternity so this book takes you hour by hour through your first month.

If you want to get sober and are too afraid to ask for help, this is a great starting place. It's also a great thing to have on hand if someone is in a crisis. Give them a copy of Hour to Hour for those long nights when the are alone and afraid.

I've never taken the time to write a book review, but this is a must read for anyone struggling to get sober, or anyone that works in the field of recovery.

I've worked with Jerry Dorsman closely, and I wanted to share with you my personal high regards for Jerry Dorsman and his new book "How to Quit Drugs for Good". I was fortunate enough to see Jerry apply many of the methods he details in his book with real people in real settings. Jerry is not a one-track thinker and is aware that different strokes work for different folks. The purpose of his book is to highlight the whole spectrum of treatments available for addictions so that the reader can better select a treatment more suitable to their unique needs. It is a comprehensive manual that goes into detail about all drugs, their effects, and effective treatments and therapies available. One would do very well in selecting this book to help themselves or as a manual in helping others in the field of addictions treatment. I found his first book "How to Quit Drinking Without AA" an essential tool in my own counseling experiences. It was so incredibly useful from a concrete treatment perspective that I referenced it in my own treatment plan development. I saw great results, and I stand by that. That's all I needed to see. Now I recommend all his books, because he cuts right to the chase without all the fluff. When you're in trouble, you don't want to waste time. You want to know what to do and how as soon as you can. This book is not the cure, but it's the best stepping stone to the cure only you can provide. Trust me on this!

Reminiscent of "Go Ask Alice," this book is a bible for teen-agers coping with drug or alcohol addiction. It doesn't preach; it's a tell-all story of one girl's triumph over her addictions. Although I couldn't relate to the author's problems with drugs and alcohol, I could relate to her problems as a teen-ager. Her brutal honesty went beyond the threshold! Two of the things that separate this diary from others are the author's illustrations and poems-very thought-provoking.

I was sixteen when I found a battered, old copy of this book in our local library. I pulled it out and started reading ... and could not stop. The girl who wrote this diary was fifteen, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and an artist able to speak the unspeakable, draw the undrawable. At the time when I read this diary, I was suicidal and could not stop the things in my head. In these pages I found someone I could identify with, someone who had felt my pain, and who had come out the other side. Someone who had called herself a witch, slept in her backyard once to get away from it all, fell in love with an older man, loved her horse more than anything, and was painfully, tormentedly, honest. This book changed my world forever. I wish every teenager could read it.

This would be a good book for anyone to read, as it demystifies the huge number of over the counter cold and flu drugs, how they work, how they are tested. It also sums up studies of the drugs on pregnant women, their safety classification (not really very useful) and Dr. Towers' personal recommendation (would he and his wife use it in a pregnancy). If you are are a "more information" patient, this is an excellent book. However, having read it cover to cover, the basic fact is that most OTC cold and flu remedies are class "C" (poorly tested on pregnant women) and yet are unlikely to influence the outcome of a pregnancy (especially after the first trimester). I can't remember a single drug that clearly was a terrible idea to take. I do wish that there was some emphasis in the book on "natural" remedies for cold and flu symptoms -- using a humidifier, drinking tea with honey for sore throats, etc. However, I do strongly recommend this book.

Great information not found anywhere else!

This book helped me make important decisions about my health and my babies health. Not even the pharmacist knew how to answer my most basic questions about over the counter drugs and pregnancy. Dr. Towers has made this import information easy to read and comprehend. This is a must book for any woman thinking of having or is currenty having a baby.

This book written by Dr. Craig Towers is one that has been needed in the healthcare arena for years. It has been difficult to get information about over-the-counter medications for the pregnant mother. I have been providing education to pregnant mothers for 20 years and now will have a book available which will provide guidance to the pregnant women regarding these medications. Part one of this book will allow the patient to understand the important of knowing how these medications can affect the pregnancy. The patients will receive the basic information about genetics and how the use of medications puts the patient at-risk for birth defects. The seond part of the book is a good analysis of how one develops a cold or the flu. The book also provides different categories of medications, explaining the different affects of the different medications. The patient will be able to refer to this book as a guidance during pregnancy making sure what medications they take over-the-counter are not putting them or their baby at-risk. For the most part this book is easy to read, but the lay person may need to ask their healthcare provider for some clarification. Obstetricians, nurse practitioners and nurses will have a great reference book for providing information to their patients when they have a cold.
