Mr Edwards cuts through the hype that passes for nutritional information these days and tells us what the various vitamins and minerals actually do in our bodies. He is honest enough to tell us, unlike most nutritional authors, that he doesn't know everything and can't give answers to everything. I especially like the alphabetically arranged descriptions of nutrients and conditions. At last I understand what those nutrients are supposed to do. Too bad I can't get this kind of honest answer from my own doctor - who seems to be locked into a "SUPR" mentality. This book ought to be required reading for every family physician and every surgeon - before he makes the first scalpel cut!

A refreshingly unbiased attempt to help the reader

I wish I had got my hands on this book 15 years ago, when I experienced a sudden decline in health and began my search for answers. It would have saved me from several regrettable decisions and given me the understanding I needed to navigate both the health care industry and the world of self-help bookdom with more discernment.

The author is quick to admit that he does not have all the answers, but what he does offer the reader is an laudable attempt to provide unbiased information for the purpose of truly being a help to the reader.

I learned a lot about the pharmaceutical companies, the FDA, the conventional medical establishment, and the nutritional supplement industry. In some areas, my suspicions were confirmed. In others, my naivity was embarrassingly exposed. I especially appreciate how the author shares the information without being out to get one group or the other.

Any book written by a physician is almost assuredly going to be pushing their own biased approach to health care. The fact that the author is not a health care provider makes it easier to trust that he is truly attempting to be unbiased. His credibility on the subject comes not from any medical degree, since he has none, but from years of study to uncover the truth in health care marketing and research claims.

Topics covered include: honesty, bad advice, sources for information, the medical establishment, economic problems, principles of nutrition (that do not involve the food pyramid), deficiencies and supplementation, mental function, and a host of diseases that plague our culture. In all topics, the effect of nutrition on body processes is explained in detail, and approaches offered by both conventional and alternative therapies are explored.

If you are looking for a quick fix to your own health challenges, then this book is not for you. But if you are looking for information that will help guide you toward improved health, I highly recommend Honest Nutrition. It will challenge both you and your health care providers to be slower to throw a band-aid solution at your health problems and quicker to search for the origin and resolution of your particular disease.

Bringing Reality to the Health-Care Debate

Many who write on the subject of nutrition and health are intelligent, educated and knowledgeable. Honest Nutrition by Ira Edwards is noteworthy because the author writes as a health consumer; he does not have a health product or service to promote. To his credit, Edwards has no bias for or against conventional medicine, alternative medicine or herbal healing. He lays out the benefits, problems and costs of various nutritional, herbal and medical modalities with careful attention to biochemical realities.

Over several decades, Edwards has investigated the authenticity of many scientific studies that are commonly accepted in health and medical practice. His education and professional experience, in biochemistry and in scientific methodology, well qualify him to see through a fraudulent veneer where it exists. Among innumerable subjects, his findings on cholesterol are important to anyone interested in maintaining good health.

Although retired, Edwards has stayed current with scientific discovery. The book is abundantly filled with timely, relevant information. For me, it has been a marvelous resource, dropped into my hands at an appropriate time to help with important (and beneficial) health decisions.

Who knew that after one boring day in the bookstore I would end up this obsessed with a series? The Clearwater Crossing series is truly an original series, and I love it! I love how Roberts can make you involved in each one of the lives of Eight Prime. Hope Happens is a good example of how she can make you look into the deepest depth of the character's souls. I now feel connected to each character, and I can't wait until the next book comes out. The book will make you laugh, cry, and smile with joy! I would recommend it to anybody looking for a wholesome good read.

This book-as the others-wonderfully displays how teens today cope with life's accidents. They portray how we feel almost always, and while I've never coped with anyone I love being in a car accident, I know that I would feel just as horrible as the next person. L.P.Roberts did an excellent job with this book as in the last 11 books-I've read (and have) them all. So, I believe that these books are easy, and good for us all. Maybe they're good because they take our focus off of us and let us see other people's problems and lives in a new light. I recommend this book (and series) to anyone who needs a "breather" from all the hype that is associated with us teens.

Laura Peyton Roberts has done it again! I couldn't put this one down either! I especially liked the way she is so detailed, you feel as though you are watching the story take place right before your eyes. She picks topics that really relate to teenagers, any one of EIGHT PRIME could really be me or my friends! She keeps me hanging at the end with her cliff hangers, that is the only draw-back to the Clearwater Crossing series. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to find out what happens with Jenna and Peter, Melanie and Jesse, Nicole and Guy, Leah and Miguel, Ben, and Sarah!

Recipe for Progress: How to Legalize Drugs by Jefferson Fish

Review Date: 2001-03-16
HOW TO LEGALIZE DRUGS by Jefferson Fish,Ph.D.is the most comprehensive & informative publication i've come across addressing the highly charged political & social issues surrounding drug policy reform. Contributing to this masterpeice are 30 thinkers from the disciplines of anthropology, economics, law, philosophy, political science, psychology & sociology with each presenting an in-depth, scholarly & multifaceted dimension to our understanding.

In dedicating this work to the "victims of Drug Prohibition," Dr. Fish describes in painful detail what has become known as "the drug exception to the Bill of Rights." He even considers the entertainment value of the war..."like public executions of the past,or Romans throwing undesirables to the lions...if politics is about giving bread & circuses to the masses, then 'fighting drugs' may provide the kind of exciting entertinment that citizens are willing to pay for!"

LEGALIZE gives ample consideration to both public health (harm reduction) & human rights based approaches to policy reform & unlike many, Dr. Fish maintains hope in the midst of despair. He believes the time is ripe for powerful rapid change as we've seen with the collapse of the Soviet Union after decades of the Cold War & earlier in the century with the end of alcohol prohibition.

LEGALIZE contains 9 different proposals for legalization, from the most limited to the most sweeping, with a variety of health & rights based rationales. Dr. Fish points out that even if only marijuana were legalized, then the war on drugs would shrink drastically & many drug warriers & criminal justice bureaucrats would be out looking for jobs.

For those interested in more than superficial or soundbyte awareness of the War on Drugs, the in-depth treatment in LEGALIZE heralds the possible return of intelligence & commonsense to these & related issues & is a monumental & comprehensive statement in its own right.

Just what the title says, an excelent analysis .

Some books on drug policy reform target the heart, calling attention to the incredible suffering caused by the war on drugs but "How to Legalize Drugs" targets the brain. Jeff Fish has put together an extraordinarily complete collection of essays that covers the range of arguments bout how to reverse our drug policy. This book covers all sorts of theories about how change will occur, what sort of changes is likely, what kind is desirable, what form the transition might take, and what the result of such change might be. Historians, attorneys, pharmacologists, economists, political scientists, psychiatrists - all offer their different perspectives here. So much is discussed - from Douglas Husak's excellent analysis of the two fundamental caps of drug reformers (harm reductionists and Libertarians) to highly specific are of interest like "the impact of the War on Drugs on Puerto Ricans," that it would make a perfect text for a course in drug policy.

If you are new to the movement and find yourself spending more and more time discussing different aspects of reform, this is the book for you. If you've been around the issue for years, and find the subject as interesting as I do, this book is refreshing. With most "arguments" from Drug War warriors consisting of the same old drivel about "the message we're sending the children," someone needs to take the discussion to a more intelligent level. This book does it.

How Would Drug Legalization Actually Work?

Review Date: 1999-10-21
Steven Wishnia, copyright © High Times Magazine (October 1999) What would the world of legalization look like, and how would we get there? Jefferson Fish's anthology, How to Legalize Drugs (Jason Aronson), tries to answer those questions. Its 24 essays-by such drug-policy luminaries as Dr. Lester Grinspoon, Ethan Nadelmann, and federal Judge Robert Sweet-discuss the history of the Drug War, strategies for ending it and ways to manage legal drug use and sales. At 660 pages, with chapter titles like "The Transition From Prohibition to Regulation: Lessons from Alcohol Policy for Drug Policy," and "Discontinuous Change and the War on Drugs," it definitely isn't prime baked reading material. But if you want an intense look at specific issues and nuances, you'll be rewarded. What are the differences between the harm-reduction and the rights-based libertarian arguments against the Drug War? How do the language and concepts of drug-related discourse reinforce prohibitionist thinking? ("Marijuana, for example, has never caused a death, but how does one persuade the public to adopt a more accurate view of the pharmacological reality?" the authors ask.) Which drugs should be legalized, and where and how would they be sold? And the ACLU's Kevin Gray, comparing the Drug War's effect on black communities to Jim Crow, calls for "an antiwar movement." Fish, a psychology professor at St. John's University in Queens, NY, suggests a gradual transition to legalization, through steps like legalizing needle exchange and medical marijuana, and moving on to regulating marijuana like alcohol and tobacco, and legalizing coca leaves, psilocybin and MDMA. However, he believes the end of the Drug War will be "discontinuous"-as rapid and sudden as the extinction of the dinosaurs.

A Character to Care About

Review Date: 2004-08-18
This engaging story of a 13-year-old seeking popularity at school and harmony at home had me rooting for the main character--Asa Marie-from the first page. Asa's approach to popular fads, including some embarrassing and funny missteps, captures the identity struggle of adolescence in a lighthearted way. Asa's efforts to grow closer to her alcoholic step-dad, Eddie Clegg, are poignant and insightful. A "romance" with a boy next door and some gentle befriending of Asa by another girl at school add sweetness to the story. I liked how the author wrote in first person from Asa's perspective. Many interesting plot twists kept me turning the pages with anticipation. Asa seemed like a real person to me, not just a character in a book. I delighted in Asa's growth and look forward to more books about her adventures.

Asa wants to be popular, and she wants it bad. Readers get to see what happens when a lively, likable girl tries too hard to fit in with the popular crowd with some very embarrassing results. Asa's life is further complicated by her stepfather, the Eddie Clegg of the title, a nice guy who has a drinking problem. With a light touch, the author shows how both Asa and Eddie are drawn into one another's lies: how easily Eddie asks Asa to lie for him and how she does it, albeit reluctantly, to get what she wants. This is a terrific book for any child who lives in a household with an alcoholic and for any adult who has ever asked a child to shade the truth. While the story is never preachy, both Asa and Eddie come to see that honesty really is the best policy.

This is a delightfully funny and charming story of a young girl's growing up and trying to fit in. She is also dealing with an alcoholic step-father with whom she is trying to develop a father-daughter relationship. The story has an important, positive message that is a must read for young teens dealing with these difficult issues. The book is well-structured and Supplee masterfully intermingles the more serious messages in the book with lots of very funny situations. The book ends on a positive note. You'll love these characters and be begging for more novels featuring them.

There are many imitations to the subject, but there's no replacing the classics. Even though the slang is straight from the 70's, Chaney Allen is one of the most honest and straightforward authors I've ever read. Her wisdom, courage and spirit was felt by this reader. Not only does she give wonderful advice on recovery, but is good for life, period. IMHO, college students should read this book, especially freshmen leaving home for the 1st time.

If you're in need of help this book should be a must read.

In May, 1989, my sister met this woman, Chaney Allen, and told her that her sister, me, was in a treatment center hoping to recover from the disease of addiction. Ms. Allen autographed a copy of her book, "I'm Black & I'm Sober" and my sister mailed it to me. I read it and marvelled at the the content thereof. I had never read anything so personal and honest. It indeed gave me the identification and courage I needed to believe that I, too, could recover from a disease which wrecked such havoc in my life. I applaud Ms. Chaney Allen for sharing her life with me through the pages of "I'm Black & I'm Sober." As I approach a decade drug/alcohol-free I thank God for using you to give me and many others hope - you see, I passed on your book to those I met.

Written by teens for teens, I've Got This Friend Who... Advice for Teens and Their Friends on Alcohol, Drugs, Eating Disorders, Risky Behavior, and More lives up to its title. The creation of KidsPeace, an international charity that has worked for 125 years to help kids and teenagers avoid and overcome crises, I've Got This Friend Who... is written in straightforward dialogue format - essentially a frank and honest conversation. "Considering cigarettes or chew a reward and treat after working hard or doing well at school or at work and making time to take a break and treat yourself is a dead giveaway [of addiction]. If you aren't addicted, you wouldn't treat yourself that way. You might go to a movie or have a piece of cake instead." Chapters cover topics such as illegal drugs, eating disorders, self-injury behavior (a.k.a. "cutting"), unprotected sex, and much more. The teens speaking out in I've Got This Friend Who... know what they're talking about - they back up their honest insights with cold, hard facts, definitions, and lists of medical problems associated with risky behavior. Additional tips for teens struggling to cope, from what to say when being pressured to smoke to the do's and don'ts of how to react if one learns a friend is self-injuring, round out this solid straight-talk guide. A "must-have" for school and public libraries especially.

Ask a teenager who they would rather have advice from, their friends, or the adults in their lives, and you know they are going to say their friends. It's what we all did, and I can live with that. But how many friends have the answers to everything a teen could be wondering about? Sometimes it takes a group of friends to find the answers. In "I've Got This Friend Who..." edited by Anna Radev, a panel of six teens share their experiences, their knowledge, and their approaches to life and its many challenges.

If there is a question about it, the answers are likely in this book. The hottest topics of drugs, smoking, alcohol, eating disorders, self injurious and high risk behaviors are thoroughly explored and discussed from a teen's perspective. Why do people smoke? What makes you an alcoholic? How can you control the urges of addiction? Why would someone not eat? How does hurting yourself affect you? What do you do when your friends are headed for serious trouble? The best solutions are always found with knowledge of the who, what, when, where and why. Coming from the words of other teenagers, the advice here is most valuable.

Imagine a group of young adults hanging out and discussing whatever is going on. The questions that come up are asked with curiosity but also with great importance and interest since things might be very personally and hugely influential in their lives. One might have an eating disorder and have first hand experience with why this occurs. One might have a parent who is an alcoholic and is concerned that it is hereditary. Someone's best friend might be considering having sex, while another friend might be cutting herself with a razor blade. The discussions in the book are broken down into six chapters, focusing on these topics. Each chapter is like a panel chat-fest and includes sidebars of important facts and information while the teens discuss the real life ramifications. What results is an advice source for readers whose friends might not have all the answers.

There are times when the information sharing seems a little forced; like a teen just wouldn't answer in such a fact based way, but the answers provided are worth that risk. I highly recommend having this book around the house. Most readers won't sit through the entire book all at once, but will refer back to it when a situation arises in their lives. Full of additional resources like websites and hotlines, it is an interactive tool as well. The people behind the book are well versed in helping teens: KidsPeace is a 125 year old national children's crisis charity dedicated to giving hope, help, and healing to children facing crisis. This is a must have for teens everywhere.

I'VE GOT THIS FRIEND WHO... is a well written handbook for teens to help their peers with issues of alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, drugs, eating disorders, self-injury and suicide, risky behavior and unsafe sex. Each topic has its own chapter that includes up-to-date statistics and resources specific to the topic. The topics were the frequently selected concerns by those kids who logged on to TeenCentral.net.

The book is set up as a discussion among six fictional teens each with different backgrounds, ages, personalities, and points of view. They explore each topic and offer advice on what teens can do to identify and help other teens with these problems, without blame. They also offer suggestions of how to say "NO" without losing face in group settings. Self-esteem issues and peer pressure are also discussed. This book is more geared for those teens who might be exploring, thinking about, or who are in situations concerning these topics.

This is a great book for teens. It has an easy to read format and excellent explanations on each topic. For you parents, this is a must read! You need the background information and support sources it has to make those talks with your teen meaningful. Anyone who works with teens should read this for those same reasons also!

I own the paperback 3rd edition of this book which I purchased to self-study before my IV therapy validation in nursing school. I found this book extremely easy to read and understand despite the fact I had no previous knowledge of IV therapy. The chapters include a basic introduction that covers fluid & electrolytes, IV solutions, documentation and patient teaching. Other chapters cover: peripheral IV's, central IV's, IV medications, transfusions, chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition. There are also short quizzes at the end of each chapter. The appendices includes a practice exam, drug compatibility, example flow sheet for documenting, glossary and also additional references. The pictures, diagrams, and charts are EXCELLENT! Although this book goes MUCH more in depth than I currently need for my med/surg class I have used this book several times as a reference.

I was so confused until I found this book!!! It explains everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in very easy to understand terms (probably good even for beginning nursing students). I have recommended it to all of my fellow nursing students, and many others find it as helpful as I have!

Urban Lifestyle Press has done it again with a masterful tale of choices, consequences and what people will do to protect their honor, their families and the lives they have built for themselves. As a first write, Bullock has really unfolded a thriller that shouldn't be lost as only an "urban tale". Anyone who loves a good "who-dunnit" will love IN THE CUT for the way that it tells a story and lets you into the minds of the characters.

The book took me a little over a week to read, not because of its length, but because I didn't want to miss any of the message.

I will be reccommending the book without a doubt, however, I don't feel as though the summary on the back of the book tells the story that comes through.

Yes, there is the character Manus and his conflict with his baby's mamma--- but that is not the main storyline that I found.

IN THE CUT is about vengeance and how a man--- in this case Tory---was able to wield his mighty hand of revenge without ever lifting a finger... destroying many along the way. The characters are able to live their story with us knowing what we should, and being able to guess at the rest.

I liked the way that Bullock did seem to send the reader on a mysterious journey before finally revealing the real villans and victims in the book.

Can't wait for the next installment from this author.

This is a book any medical transcriptionist can do with. All the current drugs are in it. They are well organized, and it is easy to find drugs in it. It will be one book I will never part with.

This is a wonderful drug manual for transcriptionists and is an excellent book to supplement a more in-depth drug reference.

The Instant Drug Index, as the name says, allows you to instantly look up the spelling of a drug name by searching the alphabetical listing. The drug name and type of drug are conveniently listed for you.

It allows you to find a drug name quickly, being able to scan the list and then resume working.

Dosage information and conditions are not listed in this book. It is meant to be a quick-reference tool and is a great supplement to a larger drug book.
