A "must" for those interested in quality control of herbs

Review Date: 1998-09-21
This is one of those rare books that is so well researched and written that it is difficult to have any negative criticism about it! This English translation by the late Norman Bisset is a fine example of how it is possible to apply sound scientific knowledge with traditional herbal medicine. The book consists of 181 monographs on medicinal plants. What makes this collection of monographs rather special is that firstly most of the monographs contain colour pictures of each plant photographed in its natural environment. Secondly this is followed by careful photographs of the dried plant used in commerce. Along side this are chemical structures of the main phytoactives aswell an excellent section on common adulterants, pharmacology, phytochemistry, microscopy and also often included is a colour tlc plate. This is extremely helpful for quality control in small importers or herbal manufactures or for those herbalists interested in simple analytical techniques. There is also sections giving the regulatory status of the plant in different countries aswell the inclusion of trade names or proprietary medicines that include the plant material in question. For example on Angelica archangelica there includes information on its use in Euvitan ®, Carvomin®, and many others. A must for those involved in scientific research on contemporary herbal medicines, a reference source for libraries or those interested or involved in quality control.

This book is great; although I wish it were more affordable, it is most certainly worth the money to those who are interested in proper identification of plant materials.

The bulk of herbal 'adverse reactions' seems to be a case of mistaken identity. With Wichtl's amazingly clear and beautiful photographs of dried plant material, thorough listing of chemical markers and microscopic as well as macrocopic features examined with an eye for identification, this volume deserves every bit of its excellent reputation.

A detailed scientific look at herbs and their uses.

Translated from the German by Professor Norman Grainger Bisset, Department of Pharmacy, King's College, University of London, this large format, illustrated reference book covers 181 herbs that are used as teas or are components of herbal mixtures. The botanicals included were chosen based on a survey carried out in 180 German pharmacies. All of the herbal "drugs" in this book are "licenced" by the German government. The book is organized alphabetically by the Latin name of the herb, with an excellent subject index, that includes the English names in bold. Each herb listing, which is an average of three pages, contains the following information: illustration and description; common English name and scientific names; synonyms; place of origin; chemical constituents; therapeutic indications and historical use; side effects; making the tea; package inserts (includes dosage, mode of administration, interactions with other remedies); list of prepared rem! edies for consumers, including teas; phytomedicines: combined remedies containing the herb; diagnostic features of the drug; adulteration; citations to research. Each herb listing contains an abstract from the German Commission E monograph, which serves as a kind of snapshot. The "indications" feature gives a detailed history of the herb's use, from the clinical and empirical point of view, and is designed to link the doctor or pharmacist with additional research. The "List of Indications" index is particularly useful, describing conditions such as Coughs, Menstrual Disorders, and Kidney and Bladder Disorders, and listing herbs that have been used to treat them. The list makes a distinction between "folk" medicines and more standard medical herbs. Hundreds of color plates illustrate both the whole plant and the dried herb. This detailed, scientific look at herbs will be useful for physicians, pharmacists, herbalists, and manufacturers. from Healt! hInform the newsletter

Back in the 1980s I read this book to my dad on a long car trip. I read the first chapter to my six year old son at bedtime and he had finished the book himself by the end of the next day. We both love it! It's a very exciting and memorable book; I can recall the plot and characters twenty years later.

A wonderful Book!!!

Hero by Walt Morey was a wonderful and memerable book. I found this book at a used bookstore and it caught my eye. I could tell by the cover and the painting of the dog on the frount that I would like. After I paid the $[...], I went home and read it. I loved how the author did not push the "amazing dog" thing because most children's writers want the dog to be unrealistic. All I am saying is that the dog acted real. A very good read. If you love animals, you will adore this book.

This book was great! It was descriptive and very real.

Dr. Phelps makes such a brilliant and provocative case for the biochemistry of addiction. You either have the "bad" genes or you don't. It removes the stigma of alcoholism etc. and brings the issue down to understanding your biochemistry and managing it appropriately. Although I don't smoke, drink or use drugs, I discovered through the questionnaire that I am a High Addictor (based on family patterns of addiction). Sure enough, when I removed seemingly harmless foods from my diet, (sugar, white rice, white flour, caffeine), my focus sharpened dramatically, I lost over 15 pounds, and my emotional mood swings stopped. I managed to maintain this "eatting program" for over a year. Regrettably, I fell back during the Holidays and have yet to fully re-establish the discipline that made me feel so MUCH BETTER! You'll be glad you read this book, and like me you will recommend it to countless people. A companion book that has a similar content, though for weight loss is Mastering the Zone by Barry Sears, Ph. D. Good luck! Linda Schiller-Hanna

the outstanding book here is a must for every person who is addicted to:caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar, marijuana, antidepresants, sleeping ppills, and much more. this book is dealing with a true self expirience alcohol addict that beat it with her wisdom as a m.d. who also backed it up with orthomolecular-nutrition method that described in details in this book in every specific addiction you may have. the psycological aspects of the addiction is also described very wisely in this book, and the book is written in a very easy to follow and in organised way. i must add that from my expirience i can tell you (the reader)that i treated alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and sleeping pills in almost exactly the same way as the author of this book did. this book is very relevant in his knoledge and strategies, and practically, i do recommand it with all my heart to every addict, physician, and the lay person.the only addiction that this book didn't help is the addiction to that book. buy this book today!.

I have treated over 15,000 addictive patients with the program in this book. After 15 years the book is still as valulable as the day it was published by Little, Brown, INC. I created the qustionaire and score sheet to help interested people to learn about Genetic Addictiveness and to determine if they indeed are addictive. The self-treatment program was drawn from standard Medicine and Holistic Medicine over many years in my practice. This plan enabled me to get sober and become physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually free! It works much better than any other method I have ever seen. This program is approximately 60% to 70% successful "long term"---far beyond the 3% to 10% of in-patient treatament centers. It is a self-motivated plan with strong support from Mega-Doses of Vitamin and mineral and herbal supplements, as well as many support activities. Freimuth does an extraordinary job of speaking to both the inexperienced individual with an interest in learning more about addiction and the seasoned professional who treats addiction regularly. The prose is rich and informative, yet easy to read and entertaining. For those who would like to learn more about addiction, this book will teach you. For those who already know about addiction, this book will fill in gaps and answer questions you didn't even know you had. I recommend it to clients who would like to learn more about addiction as well as colleagues who work in addiction treatment.

The book is enjoyable, thoughtful, informative, and offers an array of clinical examples. Dr. Freimuth does a nice job of addressing varying theoretical perspectives, diagnostic and clinical ambiguities, and therapeutic process/relationship factors. The information provided is helpful in developing case conceptualizations and considering various treatment interventions.

Kudos to the author for this wonderful clinical resource.

purpose is to help professionals and graduate students
who work in the mental health field to uncover and deal
with those addictive behaviours that are hidden behind a
mountain of other problems....The book should move a
pre-contemplative psychotherapist
through contemplation to action with just one

Mr Edwards cuts through the hype that passes for nutritional information these days and tells us what the various vitamins and minerals actually do in our bodies. He is honest enough to tell us, unlike most nutritional authors, that he doesn't know everything and can't give answers to everything. I especially like the alphabetically arranged descriptions of nutrients and conditions. At last I understand what those nutrients are supposed to do. Too bad I can't get this kind of honest answer from my own doctor - who seems to be locked into a "SUPR" mentality. This book ought to be required reading for every family physician and every surgeon - before he makes the first scalpel cut!

A refreshingly unbiased attempt to help the reader

Review Date: 2007-03-24
I wish I had got my hands on this book 15 years ago, when I experienced a sudden decline in health and began my search for answers. It would have saved me from several regrettable decisions and given me the understanding I needed to navigate both the health care industry and the world of self-help bookdom with more discernment.

The author is quick to admit that he does not have all the answers, but what he does offer the reader is an laudable attempt to provide unbiased information for the purpose of truly being a help to the reader.

I learned a lot about the pharmaceutical companies, the FDA, the conventional medical establishment, and the nutritional supplement industry. In some areas, my suspicions were confirmed. In others, my naivity was embarrassingly exposed. I especially appreciate how the author shares the information without being out to get one group or the other.

Any book written by a physician is almost assuredly going to be pushing their own biased approach to health care. The fact that the author is not a health care provider makes it easier to trust that he is truly attempting to be unbiased. His credibility on the subject comes not from any medical degree, since he has none, but from years of study to uncover the truth in health care marketing and research claims.

Topics covered include: honesty, bad advice, sources for information, the medical establishment, economic problems, principles of nutrition (that do not involve the food pyramid), deficiencies and supplementation, mental function, and a host of diseases that plague our culture. In all topics, the effect of nutrition on body processes is explained in detail, and approaches offered by both conventional and alternative therapies are explored.

If you are looking for a quick fix to your own health challenges, then this book is not for you. But if you are looking for information that will help guide you toward improved health, I highly recommend Honest Nutrition. It will challenge both you and your health care providers to be slower to throw a band-aid solution at your health problems and quicker to search for the origin and resolution of your particular disease.

Bringing Reality to the Health-Care Debate

Review Date: 2007-07-10
Many who write on the subject of nutrition and health are intelligent, educated and knowledgeable. Honest Nutrition by Ira Edwards is noteworthy because the author writes as a health consumer; he does not have a health product or service to promote. To his credit, Edwards has no bias for or against conventional medicine, alternative medicine or herbal healing. He lays out the benefits, problems and costs of various nutritional, herbal and medical modalities with careful attention to biochemical realities.

Over several decades, Edwards has investigated the authenticity of many scientific studies that are commonly accepted in health and medical practice. His education and professional experience, in biochemistry and in scientific methodology, well qualify him to see through a fraudulent veneer where it exists. Among innumerable subjects, his findings on cholesterol are important to anyone interested in maintaining good health.

Although retired, Edwards has stayed current with scientific discovery. The book is abundantly filled with timely, relevant information. For me, it has been a marvelous resource, dropped into my hands at an appropriate time to help with important (and beneficial) health decisions.

Who knew that after one boring day in the bookstore I would end up this obsessed with a series? The Clearwater Crossing series is truly an original series, and I love it! I love how Roberts can make you involved in each one of the lives of Eight Prime. Hope Happens is a good example of how she can make you look into the deepest depth of the character's souls. I now feel connected to each character, and I can't wait until the next book comes out. The book will make you laugh, cry, and smile with joy! I would recommend it to anybody looking for a wholesome good read.

This book-as the others-wonderfully displays how teens today cope with life's accidents. They portray how we feel almost always, and while I've never coped with anyone I love being in a car accident, I know that I would feel just as horrible as the next person. L.P.Roberts did an excellent job with this book as in the last 11 books-I've read (and have) them all. So, I believe that these books are easy, and good for us all. Maybe they're good because they take our focus off of us and let us see other people's problems and lives in a new light. I recommend this book (and series) to anyone who needs a "breather" from all the hype that is associated with us teens.

She picks topics that really relate to teenagers, any one of EIGHT PRIME could really be me or my friends! She keeps me hanging at the end with her cliff hangers, that is the only draw-back to the Clearwater Crossing series. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to find out what happens with Jenna and Peter, Melanie and Jesse, Nicole and Guy, Leah and Miguel, Ben, and Sarah!

Recipe for Progress: How to Legalize Drugs by Jefferson Fish

Review Date: 2001-03-16
HOW TO LEGALIZE DRUGS by Jefferson Fish,Ph.D.is the most comprehensive & informative publication i've come across addressing the highly charged political & social issues surrounding drug policy reform. Contributing to this masterpeice are 30 thinkers from the disciplines of anthropology, economics, law, philosophy, political science, psychology & sociology with each presenting an in-depth, scholarly & multifaceted dimension to our understanding.

In dedicating this work to the "victims of Drug Prohibition," Dr. Fish describes in painful detail what has become known as "the drug exception to the Bill of Rights." He even considers the entertainment value of the war..."like public executions of the past,or Romans throwing undesirables to the lions...if politics is about giving bread & circuses to the masses, then 'fighting drugs' may provide the kind of exciting entertinment that citizens are willing to pay for!"

LEGALIZE gives ample consideration to both public health (harm reduction) & human rights based approaches to policy reform & unlike many, Dr. Fish maintains hope in the midst of despair. He believes the time is ripe for powerful rapid change as we've seen with the collapse of the Soviet Union after decades of the Cold War & earlier in the century with the end of alcohol prohibition.

LEGALIZE contains 9 different proposals for legalization, from the most limited to the most sweeping, with a variety of health & rights based rationales. Dr. Fish points out that even if only marijuana were legalized, then the war on drugs would shrink drastically & many drug warriers & criminal justice bureaucrats would be out looking for jobs.

For those interested in more than superficial or soundbyte awareness of the War on Drugs, the in-depth treatment in LEGALIZE heralds the possible return of intelligence & commonsense to these & related issues & is a monumental & comprehensive statement in its own right.

Just what the title says, an excelent analysis .

Some books on drug policy reform target the heart, calling attention to the incredible suffering caused by the war on drugs but "How to Legalize Drugs" targets the brain. Jeff Fish has put together an extraordinarily complete collection of essays that covers the range of arguments bout how to reverse our drug policy. This book covers all sorts of theories about how change will occur, what sort of changes is likely, what kind is desirable, what form the transition might take, and what the result of such change might be. Historians, attorneys, pharmacologists, economists, political scientists, psychiatrists - all offer their different perspectives here. So much is discussed - from Douglas Husak's excellent analysis of the two fundamental caps of drug reformers (harm reductionists and Libertarians) to highly specific are of interest like "the impact of the War on Drugs on Puerto Ricans," that it would make a perfect text for a course in drug policy.

If you are new to the movement and find yourself spending more and more time discussing different aspects of reform, this is the book for you. If you've been around the issue for years, and find the subject as interesting as I do, this book is refreshing. With most "arguments" from Drug War warriors consisting of the same old drivel about "the message we're sending the children," someone needs to take the discussion to a more intelligent level. This book does it.

How Would Drug Legalization Actually Work?

Review Date: 1999-10-21
Steven Wishnia, copyright © High Times Magazine (October 1999) What would the world of legalization look like, and how would we get there? Jefferson Fish's anthology, How to Legalize Drugs (Jason Aronson), tries to answer those questions. Its 24 essays-by such drug-policy luminaries as Dr. Lester Grinspoon, Ethan Nadelmann, and federal Judge Robert Sweet-discuss the history of the Drug War, strategies for ending it and ways to manage legal drug use and sales. At 660 pages, with chapter titles like "The Transition From Prohibition to Regulation: Lessons from Alcohol Policy for Drug Policy," and "Discontinuous Change and the War on Drugs," it definitely isn't prime baked reading material. But if you want an intense look at specific issues and nuances, you'll be rewarded. What are the differences between the harm-reduction and the rights-based libertarian arguments against the Drug War? How do the language and concepts of drug-related discourse reinforce prohibitionist thinking? ("Marijuana, for example, has never caused a death, but how does one persuade the public to adopt a more accurate view of the pharmacological reality?" the authors ask.) Which drugs should be legalized, and where and how would they be sold? And the ACLU's Kevin Gray, comparing the Drug War's effect on black communities to Jim Crow, calls for "an antiwar movement." Fish, a psychology professor at St. John's University in Queens, NY, suggests a gradual transition to legalization, through steps like legalizing needle exchange and medical marijuana, and moving on to regulating marijuana like alcohol and tobacco, and legalizing coca leaves, psilocybin and MDMA. However, he believes the end of the Drug War will be "discontinuous"-as rapid and sudden as the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Review Date: 2001-08-10
I knew Susan Quinn's HUMAN TRIALS would be an engaging, informative inquiry into the intricate process of bringing a new drug therapy to market. What I didn't expect was that the book would read like the best of thrillers -- it takes the reader on the suspenseful and sometimes heart-wrenching journey into the very heart of the war against disease. HUMAN TRIALS is ultimately about the people who populate the closed society that chronic, degenerative illness creates (in this case, MS and rheumatoid arthritis): the patients and their families who suffer and hope, and the doctors, scientists, and investors who, from motives that mix intellectual egotism, financial gain, and selfless dedication, bring their best weapons of mind and spirit to the battle. Quinn does an admirable job describing and demystifying the strategy involved in one novel approach to conquering, or at least containing, MS and RA; the reader learns in compelling detail just what it takes to develop an untested theory into a viable, marketable protocol. However, HUMAN TRIALS goes beyond scientific process to tell a story of risk and courage on both sides of the line. On this particular journey, failure is simply a subset of perseverance, knowledge arrives in unexpected ways, and victory is really a matter of the heart more than the body.

This book grabbed me from the start since I also have one of those incurable, untreatable autoimmune diseases that rarely threaten your life, but certainly ruin it. Scleroderma patients had a recent, similar roller-coaster ride with what was thought to be a promising therapy. I could easily relate to everyone involved - patients, treating doctors, researchers, and investors. Ms Quinn took very complex material about MS and the research surrounding it and made it understandable, while telling an exciting and emotionally engaging story. Though it doesn't help me to cope day-to-day with my disease, it does make me understand the processes and people involved in the search for a treatment.

This engaging story of a 13-year-old seeking popularity at school and harmony at home had me rooting for the main character--Asa Marie-from the first page. Asa's approach to popular fads, including some embarrassing and funny missteps, captures the identity struggle of adolescence in a lighthearted way. Asa's efforts to grow closer to her alcoholic step-dad, Eddie Clegg, are poignant and insightful. A "romance" with a boy next door and some gentle befriending of Asa by another girl at school add sweetness to the story. I liked how the author wrote in first person from Asa's perspective. Many interesting plot twists kept me turning the pages with anticipation. Asa seemed like a real person to me, not just a character in a book. I delighted in Asa's growth and look forward to more books about her adventures.

Asa wants to be popular, and she wants it bad. Readers get to see what happens when a lively, likable girl tries too hard to fit in with the popular crowd with some very embarrassing results. Asa's life is further complicated by her stepfather, the Eddie Clegg of the title, a nice guy who has a drinking problem. With a light touch, the author shows how both Asa and Eddie are drawn into one another's lies: how easily Eddie asks Asa to lie for him and how she does it, albeit reluctantly, to get what she wants. This is a terrific book for any child who lives in a household with an alcoholic and for any adult who has ever asked a child to shade the truth. While the story is never preachy, both Asa and Eddie come to see that honesty really is the best policy.

This is a delightfully funny and charming story of a young girl's growing up and trying to fit in. She is also dealing with an alcoholic step-father with whom she is trying to develop a father-daughter relationship. The story has an important, positive message that is a must read for young teens dealing with these difficult issues. The book is well-structured and Supplee masterfully intermingles the more serious messages in the book with lots of very funny situations. The book ends on a positive note. You'll love these characters and be begging for more novels featuring them.
