A friend who's son has ADHD lent me this book. I read it in one sitting. "Club Meds" does for ADHD what "Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathan Lethem did for Tourette's Syndrome: we get a glimpse inside the head of someone suffering from a condition few of us can recognize or understand. Written from the perspective of Jack Sutton, an irreverent, realistic young teen dealing with the effects of going off his medication when the high school bully confiscates his Ritalin, which Jack has been taking since the 3rd grade.

A good book for kids with ADHD who need a peer character to look up to, and to remind them that they are not alone with their condition. A good book for parents who want a better understanding of what their "different" kids might be going through at school AND at home. A good book for anyone who enjoys a good story and interesting, well developed characters. A side note: my 54 year old husband woke up in the middle of the night, went down to the kitchen, found the book on the counter, and started reading while eating some cereal. He read a third of it before going back to bed, then finished it the next day. Now that's impressive!

For John "Jack" Sutton, life is made up of two things--when the meds he takes for ADHD are streaming through his system, and when they're wearing off. For as long as he can remember, he's taken medication at regular intervals throughout the day to help with his ADHD, otherwise known as Attention Deficit hyperactivity Disorder. Although there are still plenty of times when his mind wanders, or when he can't answer a direct question, or when he's in his own world and doesn't even realize that someone is speaking to him, these times are fewer and farther between when he's taking his Ritalin.

Jack has a pretty close-knit group of friends: Mary, who also has ADHD, and Sam, who takes medication to keep him from having seizures due to epilepsy. Along with a few other students at Busby Memorial High School, they make up Club Meds--the students who arrive at the nurse's office daily for their mid-day dose of medication.

Jack's life isn't only made up of Club Meds, though. There's also his mother, a stay-at-home mom who has the art of worrying down to an exact science. For someone who is a freshman in high school, Jack has very little freedom. He's not allowed to talk on the phone after eight p.m., especially to Mary, who for some reason is persona non grata to his mother. He doesn't go out to parties, or stay out late, or date. And when and if he does get in trouble, which happens a lot when he deals with his father, his punishment is to have his computer taken away. Since Jack's idea of light reading is a Mac manual, this is torture. For his father, a former jock who doesn't even truly believe in either ADHD or the need for medication, dealing with Jack is something he tries to avoid at all costs.

And then there's Chuck Williams, the bully of all bullies, who gets off on tormenting the members of Club Meds. For Jack, things get even worse when Chuck starts demanding he turn over some of his weekly medication for his own purposes. How is Jack supposed to deal with everyday life without his medicine? As things go from bad to worse, it's up to the members of Club Meds to come up with a plan to end Chuck's assault.

CLUB MEDS is a great, entertaining, quick read. I've been fortunate to read some of Ms. Page's previous releases in the adult mystery market, and have to say that the same fast-paced style is in play here. A great read about being different, tolerating cruelty, and having what's mentioned in the book as "a disability that no one can see."

I bought this book hoping to find some insight into a friend's crack addiction.

This book teaches you about cocaine and cocaine addiction. It talks about who can be a cocaine addict and how to tell if you or a loved one is an addict.

The real life stories touch the heart and show that you aren't the only person going through what you are going through.

All in all this is a great book for those dealing with cocaine/crack addiction.

Mr. Richards is America's greatest living photojournalist. The depth of his social commitment to his subjects is equaled only by his amazing ability to compose the picture perfectly.

His best

Review Date: 2001-01-03
Cocaine true, Cocaine Blue represents the best of Eugene Richards. If Robert Capa's maxim about your pictures being close to be good is true, then Richards work is hands down about as close as anyone is getting.

This book focuses on the impact of crack cocaine in three eastern cities -- North Philadelphia, Harlem, and Red Hook, New Jersey.

Richards seems to have none of the fear that would stop most people, because his pictures bring a viewer over the comfort line to become shocking. The scenes exceed imagination. In fact, one of his pictures in this book was challenged for its authenticity because it seemed almost too perfect... In it, a women pauses to look at her John, her hands on his zipper, with her young child watching her. On a wall behind her, a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. is displayed. Some black political leaders saw this picture and insisted that Richards must have set it up. He could only assert that he was truthful in his portrayal.

Truth is always stranger than fiction. This might be photojournalism's answer to magical realism: there is a wickedness and abandon to this world. The cover picture is another example -- the photograph shows an addict holding a syringe in his mouth. His eyes gleam in a way that suggests the insanity in the spirit of this individual.

Richards is for the most part a photographer who works inside America. Some domestic photographers lament that all of the best photographs are made in wars, and that the situations in our home communities preclude us from being able to make great pictures. Eugene Richards shows how this is false. He takes horrifying pictures in Long Island, in Philadelphia, in West Virginia, in Kansas City.

A documentary must have!

Eugene Richards, one of the worlds best photojournalist, has a gift to not only photograph well but also write about his subjects equally as well! He shows the world a part of this world many do not see nor wish to see. This is one of those photo books that a good photographer must have to essentially help to chisel a path in the photography world for themselves! Taking this style to learn and grow from! One can learn much by the raw and realness of Richard's Cocaine life pictorial!

Good Thinking Material

I like the authors' attention to defining words in the beginning of the book and think it picks up on a gut level, with more mass appeal, when individual cases are examined. Don't skip the appendix because there's some good practical stuff there. I know one of the authors and have met both here in Denver, so I might be biased on the positive side, but I think they offer some refreshing views of a subject that touches just about everyone's life. The ideas of social capital and of beating addiction without traditional forms of treatment are worthy of more attention, and I speak in the context of having seen treatment fail for others.

Dr. Wolverton has created what will long be a classic of dermatologic texts. This book begins with basic pharmacologic principles and covers all of the major classes of drugs that are used to treat skin diseases including rarely used compounds such as clofazimine. Each drug is discussed from chemical structure to pharmacokinetics to mechanism of action, etc., with handy little tables that nicely supplement the text. The clinical use sections discuss findings of key medical articles and a section on off-label uses discusses case reports of the drugs' use in rarer conditions. Dosages and weight-based dosing tables are included.

There are good sections on other topical compounds (sunscreens, cosmetics, insect repellants). Phototherapy with psoralens and photopheresis have good reviews as well. Several chapters discuss the side effects of major drug classes.

This book is excellent all the way around and is not only a good reference for practicing dermatologists but is helpful also as a stand-up text for residents to read all the way through.

Definitive Drug Therapy

Review Date: 2001-07-18
The much thinner first edition of this book has been the definitive source for dermatology therapy for ten years. Now, a revised, more comprehensive version details all aspects of drug therapy for dermatologists, and other physicians treating cutaneous disorders. From topical agents to systemic therapies commonly used to treat skin disease to cosmetic agents, this book is all inclusive. A standardized format presents the different drugs in a consistent fashion and tables emphasize important drug interactions and present monitoring guidelines for commonly and uncommonly used medications.

In addition to listing and reviewing FDA approved indications for medications, commonly used "off-label" indications are also listed and the literature supporting their use is given.

Sections of the book are also dedicated to less commonly discussed topics around drug therapy, such as pharmacoeconomics, FDA approval process, and medicolegal issues surrounding drug therapy.

This will be an importantant resource for dermatologists, dermatology residents, medical students, and all physicians who treat skin disease.

A Powerful Testament

Review Date: 2005-03-30
Alcoholism cuts across all divides, afflicting the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the famous, the unknown. In this very absorbing book, author and interviewer Dennis Wholey meets with a few of them and presents their thoughts on how they became alcoholics, how it affected their lives, and what they did in an effort to control their disease.

The book breaks down into several sections. After a short introduction by actor, singer, and alcoholic Gordon MacRae, Wholey describes his own journey--and then launches into sections titled "The Beginning," "The Progression," "Quitting," and "A New Life," in which the likes of Doc Severinson, Shecky Green, Gary Crosby, Bob Welch, and Thomas Tryon describe their personal experiences with the disease at various stages. Other sections include "The Woman Alcoholic," "Alcoholism and Homosexuality," "Wives and Alcoholic Husbands," and "The Families of Alcoholics."

Although the book finishes out with information on Al-Anon and A.A., it does not actually "preach" either organization as a cure-all for every alcoholic, and several of the interview subjects found relief through various other organizations or techniques.

You might suppose this book will be of interest only to other alcoholics, but that is far from the case. With a broad range of personalities involved--Gale Storm, Jason Robarbs, Grace Slick, and Billy Carter to name but four more--it offers a truly fascinating look into both the individual and the disease. It also offers inspiration for any one who has ever faced the need to make substantial life-changes for any reason.

If there is a flaw in the book, it is that it has a slightly dated quality. Although it offers a section on "The Woman Alcoholic," the emphasis is on men, and the "Alcoholism and Homosexuality" section consists of a single interview that has, in many respects, suffered a great deal from changing attitudes and better research. Even so, while an update would be welcome, COURAGE TO CHANGE remains a powerful testament and inspiration.

When I read The Courage to Change the first time (1987, the original edition) it changed my life because it explained alcoholism in a concrete way that was easy to understand. The stories from alcoholic (and some nonalcoholic) celebrities go a long way toward illustrating the damage this disease causes while showing that you don't have to be the proverbial falling-down drunk or daily drinker to be an alcoholic. The stories also, by the way, are entertaining and show the humanity of some of the household names who tell them. Wholey mixes up the rhythm of this book enough that you don't get bored. Something here for everyone--I've personally bought literally more than 12 copies to give away. I recommend it highly. Thanks, Dennis Wholey!

After reading the New York Times review of this novel, I had to pick it up. I read it, and was utterly amazed. Burgess dexterously draws you into the story and keeps your attention through a rollercoaster ride of heroin, pot, and romantic obsession. Reminiscent of Irvine Welsh's _Trainspotting_, but with more primal power. Intelligent, realistic, and emotionally gripping, _Cowards_ is a must-read.

If you go into this book expecting a literary masterpiece that will be loved for ages by both young and old, you might be disappointed. If you go into it expecting to learn a bit about a culture that it isn't necessarily safe or prudent to explore on your own; to learn about the minds and lives of so-called junkies; to read about LIFE like it really is, the vulgar and "sordid" together with the beautiful, then you might understand what the author has to say. This isn't commercial fluff. It hasn't been blunted by any publishers' fear of criticism by the 'family oriented'. This isn't a tightly knit book that runs along a predictable narrative. It goes as life goes. This book may be touted as fiction, but the lives of Mitch, of Ziggy, of Theo, could happen to anyone at anytime - is happening, to thousands of people at this moment. There are Sheliah's and Kate's living down the street from you.

The gradual distentigration of Mitch's life, paralleled by the disintigration of the band, is underway from day one, with Mitch skipping work after an extended daydream/acid trip on the bus. The despair the entire band slowly slips into merely increases their reliance on drugs - their little bit of heaven. Then Mitch finds Etta - a "pure" form of heaven - and even after she leaves, Etta stands as a symbol of what-could-be. Burgess' "been there, done that authenticity" adds a spark to this book that would not otherwise be there. This is a magnificent debut novel; it deserves attention.

'Shelter' Shines

Review Date: 2008-03-14
Picking up this beautifully bound photography book, one could not imagine the experience hiding inside. In his debut publication called SHELTER, Lucky Michaels rocks the photography world with a book chronicling the lives of the young queer people living at a New York City shelter. Michaels' images are shockingly intimate and from first page to last, they weave a story of what it is to be queer, young, and homeless. In one image, a shelter resident snorts the blue powder from a pixie stick. In another, a pair of transgender girls fix each other's hair as they get ready to leave for the day. Michaels has an eye like no other photographer and it's clear that he truly loves his subject matter.

The photographs are accompanied by text that tells a more narrative version of these young people's lives. We follow the lives of a handful of the people seen in the book and see what the world is like through their eyes. The stories are often tragic, gut-wrenching vignettes, but each of them holds an element of hope and promise that their worlds will get better. The real magic, however is found in the photographs themselves.

This book is a treasure that deserves a place on everyone's bookshelf. It's a reminder of the work still left to do and a celebration of young lives that excel in survival. And watch out for Lucky Michaels. This guy clearly has a healthy, successful career ahead of him.

This book is riveting and will take the reader to places he or she may never have been before. Plotted around a gay man, his "business", and the passions of and in his life, this book is full of good old fashioned sleuthing, intriuge, and a bit of moral-values clarification. This is simply a very good read.

revenge is so sweet
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-21
Let me start off by saying that I have a real weakness for revenge books. There is just something truly decadent and delicious about taking a well-orchestrated (and violently nasty!) vengeance against those responsible for the murder of...the only person you've ever loved! Even more impressive is solid writing and interesting dialogue (how often can you say that?) which are accented by a tight plot that actually avoids the usual genre-driven pitfalls. Oh, and the hero is _totally_ hot (or at the very least, smart and charismatic).

Santos De La O (yep, it's a fake name) is a half Italian, half Mexican gunrunner/enforcer for a drug cartel in Mexico. He has family connections in the Italian mob, but leaves to start his own business because he's gay and his uncle, Vito the fixer, "can't employ no finocchio in this business, if you'll pardon the expression."

We get to watch Santos be really clever, make lots of money selling cool high-tech guns and missiles, and discover his softer side by of course falling in love with Tony. (All this happens in only about 70 sparse but perfect pages. The novel is only 200 pages long.) I can't express what a pleasure it was to read a book that has NO wasted filler, yet manages to convey a clear and emotional impact. When Santos is standing over Tony's body at the morgue "he kissed his fingertips and pressed them gently against the empty face" and says "Te amo...te amo tanto, tanto. I love you. I love so very much." Yes, my eyes actually teared up.

Without giving the rest of the book away, let me just mention some of the things the book doesn't do.

(1) Santos doesn't magically know who is responsible. We have an actual witness. And a license plate number. Wow.
(2) The drug cartel has nothing to do with Tony's murder. Yes, we were spared the tired and annoying drug cartel conspiracy plot.
(3) Not all of the cops are stupid and corrupt.
(4) Not one of the cops is a genius. ;-)
(5) Santos only does "normal" stupid things and he's only mostly lucky. We are not subjected to plot holes a 12 year old can figure out.
(6) There is no impossible action. No one jumps through a second-storey window and survives.
(7) The violence is not our usual boring blah, blah, blah violence. Really. Santos's revenge against one of the murderers is, um, original.

Hopefully I've convinced you to try this book. Oh, and if you're worried about the gay sex angle, well I'm sorry to have to say, it's of the boring ...and the next morning they woke up together...variety. Alas there is no explicit sex.

Well constructed, tightly edited mystery.

Review Date: 2003-06-25
This well constructed, tightly edited mystery brings a new character to the mystery/thriller genre. This is the assassin we have all been waiting for. This is the killer with a heart that we yearn to identify with in all those other books, but with whom we are never really satisfied. The "man with no name" in Conner's story is based on the stereotypes we thriller fans have met before, but succeeds somehow in a very short space of time to grab our sympathies and rivet our attention.

Tales of revenge are many. In some the hero is redeemed and returns to society, in others he goes down with his foe. This book leaves us hanging, hopeful that he will come back again in another incarnation, and wondering whether this is a character who will be able to live any other way but in the thick of deceit, lies, and greed on the grand scales of drug empires and intelligence agencies.

Necessarily short, so carefully worded that it could not be longer than it is, it reads quickly and when I came up for air I ran to Amazon looking for a sequel. Guess we just have to wait and hope.
