I bought this book for myself and my 18 year old son to read before he left for college this fall. I read it first and then let him read it. The Volkmann family did a great job of communicating to the reader the dangers of teenage drinking. My son went to numerous parties during high school where alcohol was present. Our son told us about the drinking going on at these parties and I began to realize what a serious problem exists concerning teenage drinking. I hope that many parents will read this book and realize that teenage drinking is not something to be taken lightly. Many parents do not realize what can happen to their teens who take part in this dangerous activity. I encourage any parents of a teen to read this book and then make their teen read it as well and then discuss the book with your child.

I found this to be extremly informative , seeing both sides of bing drinking and the perceptions of the family as well as the Alcoholic. I read this while my son (who also asked for help) was in rehab for his 21st birthday. He is now reading my copy. I found I could identfy with alot of the thoughts/situations as well as the codependent/alcoholic behaviors. As I work on my codependence and my son works on his sobriety I strongly encourage anyone with a teen/young adult afflicted with this disease to read this book.

This book should be a required book for breastfeeding mothers. In our world of unedicuated medical professionals regarding breastfeeding, all mothers should be armed with this book before they see a doctor- that way you KNOW for sure if the medication really is safe, or isn't. Too many doctors will tell a mother to stop breastfeeding during medication, or to pump and dump- and that is bad advice all around. There are TONS of medications that are safe for use during breastfeeding and we need to arm ourselves and teach our doctors so that we ALL get the best treatment. GET THIS BOOK!!!!

As a new mom, I was very paranoid to ingest any medicines. This book informed me of all medications, AND vitamins. I was looking for a book that also contained herbs. This one has a few, and a good rating system. Very clear, and layperson terms.

As a pharmacist, this is absolutely the first book I turn to for any question about medication and breastfeeding. It's very readable, and has both the quick, "bottom-line" recommendation and an explanation of the quality and quantity of research that led to that conclusion. I recommend it to anyone in the medical field who might encounter a breastfeeding patient as well as any woman who is currently breastfeeding or plans to in the near future. The author's website ([...]) is also useful.

If the answers you're looking for aren't here, or if you're looking for detailed recommendations about medications in pregnancy, try your local teratology information service (www.otispregnancy.org). Most of them accept calls from both the public and health care professionals, many of them handle both lactation and pregnancy questions, and it's free to call and get information. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I've found them a very useful resource that doesn't seem to be very well publicized.

Unlike most prison stories which chronicle the lives of men caught in the system, Life on the Outside, sketches the life of Elaine Bartlett, a mother of four and victim of the Rockefeller Drug Laws. Jennifer Gonnerman, a Village Voice staff writer, draws an amazing picture of the hardships and suffering women face when they try to weave their way back into society after a long prison term without any training or support. Unmatched by any other book, Life on the Outside will give readers a glimpse of the multi-generational effect prison terms have on families.

I feel as though I've now had an intimate look at life in the ghetto. This story of Elaine Bartlett is written with honesty and has no happy ending. It is a story of Rockefeller's ridiculous drug laws and the impact they had on one family. If you're looking for justice, you won't find it here. Elaine and her family have had lives of struggle, poverty, anger, crime, prison, drug addiction, etc. Not pretty. It is a book every American should read. It is my hope (and I didn't see any mention of this in the book) that the author, Jennifer Gonnerman, has given a percentage of the profits from this book to Elaine Bartlett. Without her, there would be no story. I want to thank Jennifer Gonnerman for writing this book. I hope Elaine has decorated her apartment and has some extra money stashed away in a safe place.

An important book. Several years ago, I read a lengthy rave review about this book in "The New York Times" and bought it. It's about "breaking the cycle" of imprisonment and poverty in families. At a time when governments do little other than epitomize Benjamin Franklin's definition of insanity ("doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results") this book makes clear why we should tell stakeholders to go to hell and do something other than Nixon-Bush's "tough on crime," "punish don't rehabilitate," etc. Buy it five copies at a time, read it, and pass it on (please)!!

Outraged Was My First Thought

I was outraged that a first time offense could land this mother in prison for 15 to life is that justice No matter fact Hell to the No. Are drugs bad in the community well of course Yes. Although what she did was wrong by carrying those drugs to Albany she and her children should not have had to suffer sixteen years without her even five years would have been stiff but sufficient. I read one reviewer state that she was committing welfare fraud by working under the table and a host of other things anyway. But different people look at things differently you see I was born where Elaine was born and when our mothers went out and worked under the table it was called survival. When young white teens are allowed to work under the table it is called "teaching them responsibility" People kill me how they are so ready to judge. Anyway I once again will reiterate that in no way do I agree with her carrying any drugs because my mother was addicted to drugs which royally screwed up my family BUT before anyone judges Elaine let's look at this a young mother with four children working on the side is very vunerable to be lured into the situation she was lured into by George Deets. And to think good people allowed this to happen and are still allowing this to happen cause' why is Nathan still sitting in prison for four ounces worth of cocaine.
To the Author I applaud you for writing Elaine's story with DIGNITY.

"Hi. You may think it's nuts to write to a total stranger in the library but if you're the kind of person I think you are, you'll read this, anyway."

So begins the note Sam leaves in the study room, hoping she'll soon get a response from someone she has yet to meet.

Sam's father is an alcoholic, but he never says that word. Neither does any other member of his household. Not his quiet and patient wife, Ellen. Not his energetic and silly four-year-old son, Luke. Not his thirteen-year-old daughter, Samantha - but she's thinking it. Lately, she can't stop thinking about it. Sam is torn between worrying about her father and hating what he is doing to himself and to his family. She wishes she could confide in someone about everything. Though Sam has a nice group of longtime best friends, she has never told them about her dad's drinking problem. She doesn't want to ruin their comfortable discussions about school, boys, and life in general - or their perceptions of her family.

Then she gets an idea: write a note and leave it in the library (one of her favorite places) where a cool-looking high school girl is sitting. In the note, Sam asks the recipient to leave a response note between pages 32 and 33 of The History of Modern Whaling, a book that hasn't been checked out in 13 years - that is, if she's interested. She hopes the girl will read it and respond with all sorts of good advice.

Someone does respond, but not exactly as Sam expected - not even who she expected. The rather blunt return message is signed by A.J.K. Though Sam has no idea who that is, something makes her write back again. They become an interesting pair of pen pals, communicating only through notes slipped into the whaling book when no one is looking.

"I am not all right. I am all wrong, and I need to talk to someone, even if that someone is a person who doesn't exist except between pages 32 and 33 of a book that hasn't been checked out in thirteen years."

Lush, written in first-person from Sam's POV, is a straightforward, forward-moving story peppered here and there with notes to and from A.J.K. Sam also delights in regular sleepovers at one of her best friends' houses and joyful moments at home with her little brother. She takes side steps to avoid her former friend Charlie and struggles through gym class, where her teacher always calls her the wrong name. Then her father does something unexpected, further damaging his family and leading Sam to act out at a rather unfortunate party.

Natasha Friend (Perfect) has once again created a realistic story with characters that are sympathetic but not stereotypical, led by a young lady unaware of her own strength. Friend's novel are pitch-perfect for middle school. Sam's search for a surrogate big sister leads her not only to a new friend, but also back to herself. By the time she discovers A.J.K.'s identity, she's also learned plenty about herself, her family, and her friends, both former and current, past and present. Recommended, especially for fans of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Lush
By Natasha friend
Book review by Lauren D

"It's going to be ok just take deep breaths" Samantha's mom is always telling her that, But its not all ok, nothing is okay. Sam is a seventh grade girl who has an alcoholic dad, her mom pretends everything is perfect and solves everything by doing yoga. Sam tries to get through to her mom and is worried about her younger brother who has no clue what is happening in their insane life. Sam needs help, but she is afraid that if she tells her friends, she will lose her friends as well. In desperation, she starts to write letters to someone anonymous.
I adored the book Lush. It is a complex journey filled with secrets, friendships, and grabbing situations. Natasha Friend does a wonderful job making me feel like I am standing right next to Sam, and I can relate to everyone even though I never dealt with such a problem before. The realistic dialog and great pace of the book kept me on my toes with the constantly building suspense.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about dealing with problems, family, and friendship.

Samantha Gwynn has a very big secret in the book "Lush" by Natasha Friend. Her dad is an alcoholic and if that isn't enough, she has to deal with 8th grade boys at school and drama between friends. Sam's mom feels practicing yoga will heal their family's problems. As you can probably assume, that doesn't go accordingly. Sam's mom is out every night searching for her dad at random bars or clubs. The whole family never knows what to expect when he comes home except to be ready. After a wild night out, Sam's dad swears his problem is over and he will never drink again, so he says. For maybe a split second, Sam believes him. Of course, his problem only got worse. He was becoming a better liar and finding more places to hide his stash. Eventually, her family checks him into a rehab center after brutally attacking Sam's little brother Luke. While not wanting her friends to know about her family's issues, she finds a random stranger in the library and writes her a letter, in hopes, that she will write back with advice. Although at the end of the story, Sam finds out who the pen pal actually was and boy was she shocked! Samantha was a brave girl who just wanted to be normal. If I was in her position I couldn't possibly imagine what I would do. At the end of the book, I feel that Sam really learns more about herself than anyone else. Although I loved this book and the lessons I learned from it, the book was very predictable. I had a feeling that the father was going to get help and be treated and that somehow the person she was writing to really wasn't who she thought it was. I would definitely recommend this book to kids my age or kids who maybe feel their families might have similar issues to Sam's family.

I bought this book hoping that it would serve as a shorter version of the larger and more detailed textbook. It turned out to do just that. I have used this book on many occasions to review the key things about certain conditions without having to read the lengthy chapters of the textbook.....this is a must have for anyone in the medical field....it provides a concise summary and key points from the bigger version.

Shadows in the mist is my favorite book! Its a great cliff hanger, and has wonderful description. As you read through the book you relize how well the tital fits with the book. I like the poems at the beggining of each chapter, you have to give them some deep thought but once you do (and after you read that chapter) you see that the poem is kinda revealing something in that chapter! This is anouther book you just cant put down! My faimley has only had it for a couple months and i have already read at least 5 times. She describes stuff so good you feel like you are there. At the end of the book you relize how much thought she really put into it. The beggining and middle are deciving. Its going to be a very tough mystery to crack. But it has a GREAT ending!!!! If i could i would SO rate this mystery 100 points. -Jenna b.

I loved the books of Mary Stewart, especially The Moonspinners, Airs above the grounds etc. But now I have found an author with the same style (although more modern ofcourse). I started reading and could not stop! From the first chapter I was hooked. Suzanna goes home after her father has been found in his pool - drowned. He has left a will stipulating Suzanna marry his adopted son Grant, who leads the family company. Suzanna suspects her father has been murdered, and when strange things start to happen she does not know who she can trust. It is a marvellous story with gothic elements. Reads fast. Wow, really loved it. I will certainly buy her next book.

I have been following Suzy Cohen's syndicated column for as long as it has run in my local paper. When I heard of her published book, I ordered it immediately from Amazon. I wasn't disappointed. The information superhighway is so filled with misinformation that it is refreshing to get some really down-to-earth advice from someone who has the knowledge and is willing to share it. Her online web site is also useful for those who want to get more up-to-date, in-depth, health-related information.

There was some useful information mixed in with some of the author's "opinions".
A lot of the information was facts that I've heard before and/or already knew about. But, it's nice to have a reference on hand instead of relying on memory. I didn't actually find any "amazing cures" - just some options in treatment.
What works for some doesn't necessarily work for others - but you can
always try to help yourself.

Pip is a 15 year old boy that drinks and does drugs that you can usually either find at a cemetary or smoking behind a deli. Life at home isn't to great for him, his father is an alcoholic that is usually angry and his mother pops pills. His little brother looks up to him, even though Pip does not want him to, his little brother doesn't understand what really goes on. Pip has to keep good watch of him because he is exposed to alcohol and drugs and doesnt want his brother to get into those kinds of things even though he doesnt get a hold of them. In the book Pip has to death with trying to not get kicked out of school, family issues, forced counseling, drugs and alcohol addictions. This book is excelant because it talks about problems most teen-agers have and are trying to deal with.

All parents of teenage boys should read this book. It is a remarkable porthole into their minds. Although written by a woman, both my son and I agree that it taps into this young man's psychy. Very good story, well written, informative.

When you get into High School, there is a lot of pressure. Sometimes people ask you to do things you don't want to do, like drinking and doing drugs, but you go and do them because you think it's cool. If you decide to go along with it, you may regret it when you look back. In Bottled Up, the main character, Pip, is stuck in a place where he thinks everything's okay, doing drugs and drinking underage is fine. When he finally gets hit by reality, his principal finds out and threatens him by saying if he goes to counseling and his classes, he won't tell his father, Pip has to make a huge decision. His father is the kind of dad that likes to drink a lot and hits his children. Pip figures that if his father finds out, it might be the last thing that ever happens to him. He agrees to go to the 'stupid' counseling and tries to find out who he really is. A good reason to read Bottled Up is that it captures you attention, where the reader could get through this book in a matter of hours without putting it down. It makes the person reading the book feel as though they are really there, right with Pip every time something dramatic happens. Another good reason to read Bottled up is that no matter if the reader is a teen or an adult, this book can still be related to their life. If they are an adult, the reader might being seeing things from a different view, being a parent. The best reason to read Bottled Up is whether the reader is a male or female, the book is still fitting. Even though Pip is a guy, girls still go through the things he does. Whatever age and sex the reader is, the book can still be related to. In conclusion, this is a great book for all teenagers in High School and parents. It focuses in on the trouble of being a teen when you start heading the wrong way. This book shows that no matter how far you go down the wrong path, you can always turn back.

Bottled Up is a great, relatable book for any average teenager. Pip struggles with his alcoholic father at home and overbearing teachers at school. He is responsible for his little brother as well as keeping his grades up and making sure his drugs and alcohol use under the radar.
It's a good read.
