THE most complete psychopharmacology clinical text. You will find rare side effects and drug-drug interactions that would be omitted in any other clinical text and that you would only discover by doing a literature search. Many tables make comparison between drugs of the same class easy. Also has a section on herbal products and pages of patient information sheets that can be photocopied and given to patients. This is a gem.

In a previous review for the 3rd edition I was harsh in my assessment because of the extensive errata sheet. HOWEVER, as a practicing graveyard hospital pharmacist I have come to greatly respect this reference. This version doesn't have an errata sheet, and I haven't taken the time to figure out if that is because there are no errata or they just haven't had time to figure them out. BUT, I would not go into a shift without a copy of this book on the shelf. It is that good.. and I use it to guide docs weekly. Without hesitation I say 'BUY THIS BOOK', it's a lifesaver - really.

Olson brings together experts in medicine, pharmacology and toxicology to produce a masterful guide to poisoning and overdose. This book is written for the bedside clinician and provides a rapid guide to specific exposures, kinetics and treatment. Items are generally one page or less and contain the elements you need to care for your patient. Other books have more information but Olson gives you what you need quickly and in a very concise format.

This book offered an insite into the why of addiction. It also offered steps to stay on the path of being drug free, and how to avoid the pit falls of using drugs again. To be honest with ones self-evaluation and to understand the long range effects of using Cocaine is also discussed in this book. An Extemely benificial read.

Written in '89, this book is as current as can be. Extremely helpful, specially for family of addicts. Very clearly and to the point, it covers all the facts; onset of desease, progression, treatment and most important relapse prevention. A must read if someone you love is cocaine dependent. What an eye opener! Highly recomended.

When my husband entered rehab for cocaine addiction several weeks ago, I knew nothing about this drug, and why it had such a hold on him. After reading this book, I feel like I can understand where he is at, and how to deal with it. As someone said before it contains priceless information. I thank God I was able to find this book. I highly recommend it to addicts, family members, and professionals wanting to learn everything about cocaine addiction.

As someone who has suffered with an addict for years, and who also plans to eventually practice in the field of addiction and recovery, I found this book to contain a wealth of priceless information. It provided incredible insight into the mind of the addict which will be useful to the addict himself, to family and friends, as well as to the treatment professional. A must read for anyone touched by the pain of addiction.

Pretty good book...

A story concerning the lifes of 8 kids deeply involved in cocaine trade in NYC during the 1980's. It is told from the point of view of an outsider looking in, which I would have rather seen it documented from the 'kids' view but what can you do? Bricks of coke, cut, re-rocked, packaged, street level retail, and all the nitty-gritty details involved with the process. If your looking for a book that tells the tale of the route of cocaine from the source, into the nose/arm of a user, and the people that make it happen. This book is for you, I am a sucker for this type of literature [drug-porn] so take my review with that in mind.

Just when you thought literary crit. was doomed to its staid exsistence, Ronell arrives on the scene. A critic (whose name escapes me) once said that while we can pick up a book, books can throw us across the room. I'm still recovering from the flight and trip this little book sent me on...

Something worth reading from the Ivory Tower

This book is revolutionary. If you've ever wondered what an artist (Avital Ronnell is a former performance artist) might be capable of coming up with if they became an academic (a professor) but were still devoted to the idea of performance, this is the answer. Think Kitaj and how his paintings is a form of interpretation of other artists' work in referencing them in the theme of his own work. In other words, Avital Ronnel's "Crack Wars" and its "analysis" of Madame Bovary is possible because it is from a field of study that is unique in that it is devoted to the study of an artform (literary arts) while itself operating in the same medium as that artform (words). The creativity exhibited in "Crack Wars", which is its most powerful proposition, shows that an interpretive "analysis" can be offered on a work of art ("Madame Bovery") without even wanting to answer the question, "What does is mean?". Much of the creative thrust seems to come from the way in which Ronnell re-metaphorizes certain elements or metaphors related to (current) drug use and applies them in the exploration of other facets of society that alters or simulates (ex. taking a "hit" or "scoring" of literature). What this does is to expand the reading of "Madame Bovery" to a whole crop of metaphors and their current exploration whose consideration in language may not have been in circulation at the time of its writing. And though this work may be on the edge of "literary studies", Ronnell is by no means a marginal figure. As head of NYU's dept of Germanic Languages, Ronnell co-lectured a graduate seminar last fall with Derrida (she is in the "Derrida" documentary with multi-colored bobby-pins relaying an interaction with Derrida's mother). Consider the language of the extensive quote below.

"Madame Bovary I daresay is about bad drugs. Equally, it is about thinking we have properly understood them. But if the novel matches its reputation for rendering its epoch- our modernity - intelligible, then we would do well to recall that epoch also means interruption, arrest, suspension and, above all, suspension of judgement. Madame Bovary travels the razor's edge of understanding/reading protocols. In this context understanding is given as something that happens when you are no longer reading. It is not the open-ended Nietzschean echo, "Have I been understood?" but rather the "I understand" that means you have suspended judgement over a chasm of the real. Out of this collapse of judgement no genuine decision can be allowed to emerge. Madame Bovary understood too much; she understood what things were supposed to be like and suffered a series of ethical injuries for this certitude. Her understanding made her legislate closure at every step of the way. She was her own police force, finally turning herself in to the authorities. She understood when the time had come to an end [...] for Madame Bovary opens herself to an altogether different history of intelligibility, in fact, to another suicide pact, cosigned by a world that longer limits its rotting to a singular locality of the unjust."

Not only a stunning analysis of -Madame Bovary-, but also---

Ronell's book is a tour-de-force on many levels: for its lucid and startling close-reading of -Madame Bovary-, for the densely glittering energy (and humor) of her prose, and above all for its insight -- never before so comprehensively and convincingly argued -- into addiction as a symptomatic structure of the modern condition. (The addict, she points out, embodies a peculiar challenge for thinking about the inside/outside, mind/body relation. Emma Bovary takes us farther into questions of expenditure and circulation.) This is a must-read not only for those interested in Flaubert's novel, but in the history of subjectivity more generally. Even in its craziest moments, the book is provocative and perceptive.

Deftly deconstructs drugs, addiction & modernity.

Avital Ronell examines drugs addiction & mania in this amazingly well written and concisely beautiful book. A book-as-object, containing installations, special sections and poetic-philosophic passages, Crack Wars is sure to please the patient reader. Draws from Flaubert, Heidegger and Derrida...contends that this "culture inspires and supports destructive play only to punish it." A must read!

Bravo to Mr Patton on his fine first novel. This book is chock full of interesting, multidimensional characters who don't always do or say what you expect them to do or say.Once Patton draws you in with these characters and teases you with his extensive knowledge of the drug interdiction business(which, contrary to other reviewers,I think is winnable and worth fighting)the real fun begins. And make no mistake about it...this book is fun to read. Protagonist Nick Lowe is reminiscent of the pre-P.C. days when James Bond was considered the beau ideal of manliness. But this is not just another brauny,high-tech testimony to testosterone. It's cogently written and carefully crafted and I highly recommend you add it to your summer reading list.

Patton is a keen observer of Latin culture, perhaps too keen. Its obvious to anybody who spent time "down south" fighting this ridiculous and unwinnable 'War' on drugs, that Patton's excellent web of deceit runs a bit too close to home. Why do I get the feeling that the Author lives vicariously thru his Nick Lowe creation. There is clearly more involved here than the Author's active imagination. A good yarn that won't insult your intelligence or assault your common sense about what a farcical waste of hard-earned taxpayer treasure this so-called War on Drugs has become, or should I say, has been all along.

Superbly written!

Review Date: 2002-02-25
Without a lot of the techno-gadgets common to so many books in this genre, Mr. Patton has written a compelling story with unforgettable characters. I've never heard of the writer and came across his book almost by accident, but what a surprise it was. The subtle dialog, the exquisite details, the three-dimensional characters, all of this made for a great read. In 300+ pages, he manages to weave a love story, a great mystery, and tell a good tale of espionage. One can't help but pause and take a deep breath when reading about how the War on Drugs really operates, if what he says is true, but the real value of the book is the story. One can only hope that another Nicholas Lowe novel is on the way.

If you are in law enforcement this book should do more for you than kindle rage. It's background information shows that the war on drugs was based on loosely proven propaganda which has been far out dated now. This war that we spend so much of our money on, like other wars our current administration is involving us in, is shown to be basically useless. Desperado should do more for a person than piss them off, it's shows what's wrong with the system we have in place and is meant to motivate people to push for a change in our system. If only we hadn't already conformed to what society holds true certain drugs would be decriminalized today. Let's face it, the best way to put a dealer out of business is take over his business. Not only would it save money, but it would ensure a quality safeness to the drugs we have roaming the streets today. In short, let this be a guide for future change. All it takes is one person to see the light and stand up for a cause, no matter how comfortable they are with their lifestyle already.

As a current federal "narc" and former "border rat" (9 years on the US/Mexico border in California), I feel that Shannon did an excellent job portraying the past drug problems in Mexico. Guess what? We did not solve them then and the problem is worse now. Customs Commisioner Von Raab and DEA Administrator Lawn were very outspoken on the issue of the kidnapping of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. Of course, that was before the days of "political correctness". America still refuses to decertify Mexico due to their unwillingness to truly combat drugs and continued reputation of graft and corruption. Having met and worked with many mentioned in DESPERADOS, I have utmost respect for those who indeed fought the drug war. Elaine Shannon's DESPERADOS is worth the time to read and is a must for the drug agent's home or office library.

Must read for law enforcement!

Review Date: 1998-10-06
Events in this book revolve around the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1985. It is not only the story of how this came to pass, but an examination of US drug policy in the '70s and '80s, and reveals the flimsiness of Reagan's "war on drugs." The reader will be outraged by the manner in which political considerations took precedence over the apprehension of the killers of an American agent. Despite my outrage at what I read, the book is gripping and an excellent piece of documentary work. An excellent case study of the investigation into the Sinaloa cartel.

The Distance Between Us, by Author Sarah Playle is not just an ordinary work of fiction but is an extraordinarily powerful, beautifully crafted novel. Her characters, her sense of place, her ability to create tention and resolution is deeply powerful, perhaps made more so by her disciplined, controlled writing style that allows for more - no less to make her point. It was a book I hated to finish and when I finally did - it left me with a desire for wanting more in the end. Read it. You'll never forget it.

I don't remember how I came across this book, but I purchased it and like many on the topic of alcohol, it sat under my bed many nights before I opened it up. At first I opened it up in the middle and just read a little here and there. I became so engrossed in this lady's experience that I had no choice except to start from the beginning. It was a difficult book to put down. After reading this book, I began to investigate Schick Hospital. Could it be a real place? Was their success rate for real? I hadn't openly admitted to having a problem with alcohol before reading Drink it Up!, but by the time I was done I began to visualize myself going through this treatment facility.

Within three months of reading it I had checked myself into Schick Shadel Hospital; the months leading up to my being admitted Kathy's journal was of great comfort because I could pick it up and read it to help set expectations of what I was about to undergo. Kathy S described the facility perfectly and the warmth of the staff wasn't exaggerated at all. I think I am really lucky to have come across this book and this hospital as my very first attempt at sobriety. I am sober and I know I will never drink again. The enjoyment I have in life and in relationships today without alcohol is beyond words, and my fantastic journey began by reading this book.

If you or someone you know is questioning their use of alcohol, give them this book to read. Even if Schick isn't for them, this book will definitely give them a great deal of relatable information to further their education on the topic of alcoholism.

Drink Up! is a must read for everyone struggling with addiction.

Kathy S. and her journal have brought to light many things concerning problems with drinking that have been hidden with shame by many who suffer from this stigma-filled problem. How freeing it has been to know I am not alone! Somehow, the honesty and humor in her walk through recovery has made mine manageable and I have turned this corner with relief and gratitude to her. I have read and highlighted it over and over as it helped me understand why I don't drink like everyone else. With that knowledge comes power, even for those who are unable to go to Shick Shadel. I have retired my drinking for the last time, thanks to this book by Kathy S.

Accurate, excellent, funny and horribly detailed.
