A useful book for both parents and professionalsReview Date: 2001-05-20
The book is organized by type of disorder (such as AD/HD, depression or anxiety) and by type of medication. This is good because some people want to know about a specific class of medications, while others want an overview of medication strategies for a particular disorder.
I particularly liked his suggestions on communication between parent and psychiatrist. This should help parents formulate their questions and feel comfortable asking them.
This book is also an excellent overview for medical residents and non-medical mental health professionals.

A Life worth LivingReview Date: 2008-03-08
There is a very strong sense of laying one's life bare for all to see, warts and all, and yet an infused thread of spiritual and intuitive insight that is undeniable. Reading this book, while at times a bit "in-you-face" with the blunt facts, and a bit risqué to the naïve out-of-the-loop mindset, was like a thrilling roller-coaster ride that won't let you put it down.
Lance has offered up his soul for all to experience and learn from. I must say I am very impressed and honored to have learned so much about life, spirit and the evolution of consciousness through the eyes and heart of another.
Thank you Lance.

Masterpiece by a True MysticReview Date: 2008-02-24
He now lives a quiet life, clean and sober, the respected host of the radio talk show "A Fireside Chat with Zany Mystic", where I've been a guest twice as author of "Raechel's Eyes." He is truly spiritual, a mystic healer, a most compassionate, gentle person, and without doubt one of the most courageous people I know. It took a lot of guts to tell this gritty story with the grace and humor displayed throughout, and I admire him for his honesty.
"Tales of a Zany Mystic" should be required reading for every individual undergoing drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation as well as those still contemplating major changes in other self-destructive lifestyles. White's traumatic journey is a masterpiece of living proof and encouragement that one can overcome life's challenges no matter how daunting the obstacles.
I wholeheartedly applaud Zany for his courage in writing this marvelous book.

Worthy of Reading More than OnceReview Date: 2008-01-26
The way in which he describes the characters in his life is rich and full of humor and beauty, raising the awareness of how we are all one. The horrors of addiction are shown to us without holding anything back. Anyone in recovery can relate to it intimately, and those fortunate enough to have bypassed this experience will be able to follow and perhaps better understand how this spiral of addiction works. Even better than this, is the transformative journey away from the grips of hopelessness and despair. Nothing is hidden, and it's touching how these experiences all gained momentum into a work of inspiration on all levels.
This is one of those books that can be read more than once. There is so much invaluable spiritual food for the soul here. I would encourage anyone to read this, as it not only entertains the mind, but fills the heart, and challenges the spirit. It is beautifully written, and because of the multiple layers of sincerity and wisdom, it stays with you after reading it, making the reader hope for a part two.

You may find yourself trembling as you sit beside her when she was four years old, hiding under the kitchen table during one of her father's alcoholic tirades. But the book offers great comfort by showing that, even under the spell of such powerful influences, victims of family abuse and domestic violence can overcome their pasts and be good role models for their children.

Bett,
I meant to tell you a few weeks ago that I had completed "Woman Who Knew Too Much." I have "Moon" on order now.
I'm not qualified to write a book review but just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this book. One of the few I've read from cover to cover. I am familiar with the Pecos river down here in our part of the country and your description fit so perfectly. I could see, hear and smell it vividly in my mind as I read. I really enjoyed the charactors. Loved Kit, and naturally, Cord. Sheriff Juan (Sam Elliott) was great, as well as, Metz and Marguerite. I could just visualize how sorry Jaz was and why no one could really miss him. The cats flying in all directions when startled brought a verbal laugh. My wife just looked over at me and wondered "what in the world........". I felt like I was on the back of the horse with you when we went to Jaz's shack. I saw and smelled all that stuff too. I was sad about Jones. (Old Yeller?)
My norm is getting up between 3:30 and 4 am each morning, pouring a cup of coffee and go to the computer to tend to emails. Well when I got the book, I would have the coffee, read about an hour or so, then go to the computer. Toward the end, I couldn't wait to get the computer stuff done and go back to the book. It would make a great movie.
Looking forward to "Moon".

intriguing character and writingReview Date: 2001-03-11
I'm not averse to the style. In fact, one of my all-time favorite books, Patience and Sarah (Isabel Miller) does the same thing. But I don't feel it's especially well handled here. The voice shifts are abrupt and the story, when told from Cord's point of view, often becomes confusing.
It also seems like the book can't decide if it wants to be a heterosexual feminist story or a lesbian story. There are allusions to lesbian attraction, but all of the overt sexuality in the book is straight. It seems like it's trying to attract a lesbian audience, but afraid of offending the heterosexual buying public.
Mixed feelings from me. I enjoyed it very much in parts, and was put off a bit in others. Overall, a positive 4 star review, and I felt it was worth reading the sequel. But it never quite felt like it delivered on the promise I initially felt.

You Owe Yourself This BookReview Date: 2007-05-29
With every new novel, she draws us deeper into her story with deft strokes from the brush of her impressive talent. This is true with "The Year of My Miraculous Reappearance." The reason Cynnie's story resonated so well with me is that much of her life mirrored my past in many ways. But even beyond the personal connections I felt, the themes in this outstanding novel are becoming more prevalent in current society and should not only serve as a forewarning to young men and women as to the responsibilities of each and every choice we make, but offer hope as well when life seems too much to take.
Hyde tackles very adult issues in this young adult story with sensitivity and clarity, and manages to make it poignant and enjoyable in the process. You owe it to yourself to read her books.
Uncannily accurate and a terrific readReview Date: 2007-03-30
This book should be in every school and public library where at risk kids can read it and maybe see a glimmer of hope.
Read this book NOWReview Date: 2008-04-22
When Cynnie grandparents take her three-year-old brother, Bill, away, leaving Cynnie to "make sure her mother is okay", and Cynnie is miserable. To soothe the pain, she begins drinking. Even though she vowed never to become her alcoholic mother, Cynnie finds herself spiraling down a slippery slope and doesn't even realize it. When she's the cause of an accident that could've killed not only her, but her kid brother and one of her only friends, Cynnie is court-ordered to take the Alcoholics Anonymous program. And there, she begins facing and understanding all the damage she's caused.
Oh, where to begin, where to begin on saying how all-out fantastic this book was. The plot is dark, taking dips into abuse and vices, but the author doesn't try to make it easier to digest. Some parts had me going, "No! Don't do that, Cynnie!" But that's the thing--it got a reaction (and a big one, at that) out of me. I was incredibly invested in the story. Cynnie is a lost, broken, hurt, confused, cynical character who is just trying to do the best she can with her scant circumstances. She falls into the alcoholic abyss. She commits some godawful mistakes. Some of the choices she makes are downright stupid. It takes all the strength she has, and more, to climb out of the hole she dug for herself. And she does it! She does it for herself. Most importantly, she does it for her brother, who needs her.
Cynnie's strength is in all honesty amazing. She captivated me, and I don't know why, but I felt like I knew her and understood her (as much as I could, anyway) because of Catherine Ryan Hyde's stellar first-person portrayal of her.
This book just, I don't know, grabbed me and registered with me. It was very different from Becoming Chloe. Both were thought-provoking, but this one dug deeper in me. The writing here was still sharp as ever, but very introspective, because of the few people Cynnie allows herself to trust. The characters, even the secondary ones, were super well-developed and had not three, but four dimensions each. And best of all, the ending gave me hope for Cynnie. It wasn't too pessimistic or too optimistic--it was just right.
I wouldn't change a thing in this novel, and couldn't recommend it more. I can't say enough great things about Catherine Ryan Hyde, either. She's seriously an author to watch out for. If Becoming Chloe is in my list of top ten favorite books of all times, this is in the top five. I seriously challenge anyone to read it and see if it had the same effect on them.

Serves as a warning that the old dangers are still very much around. Review Date: 2007-06-01
Try as she might not to become like her mother, Cynnie begins to rely more and more on alcohol to dull her pain after her grandparents take Bill to live with them, believing Cynnie's mom can't handle the responsibility anymore. It takes a drunk driving accident and court-ordered AA meetings before Cynnie begins to understand the trouble she's in and takes the first steps to turn her life around.
In creating Cynnie, Catherine Ryan Hyde has given readers a very real character whose pride continually gets her into trouble until she learns to let it go. The book presents a potent reminder of how easy it is to succumb to the allure of alcohol and, worse, how easy it is to become that which we hate the most.
In a world where the varied dangers faced by teens are growing exponentially on a day-to-day basis, THE YEAR OF MY MIRACULOUS REAPPEARANCE serves as a warning that the old dangers are still very much around.

Alternative medicine works for alcohol abuseReview Date: 2008-02-24
I'm happy drinkers have more options with this book. Now, in addition to cutting down or stopping, they can get a little extra help with the herbs and supplements in this book. Every drinker should own this book.
this book sends an important message . . . Review Date: 2007-08-10
alcohol abuse treatment. i gave this book to a friend of mine who has a
drinking problem but was dead against stopping or going to AA. he was
receptive to this book because it gave him some organic alternatives to
drinking less. in other words it got him started doing something about
his drinking.
some people just need a little shove to do something about their drinking
and this book provided that little shove.
Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?Review Date: 2006-07-20
This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.
This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!Review Date: 2007-07-31
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.
For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.
I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.
Unique Book!Review Date: 2005-11-29
Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic and western herbs are covered - explaining how each of these systems views alcohol abuse, how it develops and the best ways to treat it. Another major theme of the book is balance. If one's life is a balance of physical, mental and spiritual components, the less need there is for alcohol. Truly a fascinating read and helpful to me personally.

allergic reactions to drugs, food and various environmental
factors. She explains how to control bad breath through
brushing, flossing, tongue scrapers and spearmint flavor.
The book continues by explaining the use of fiber to minimize
constipation. Dandruff may be controlled with fish oils and
flax oil. Excess gas may be managed with peppermint tea and lactaid. The authors explain how to control urinary tract
infections with Azocran tablets. Overall, the book provides
