When I read about this book [...], I thought it would be of great value to my little toddler who is being raised bilingual. The idea of matching the words with stickers is great - the implementation a little poor due to lack of stickiness. When we tried to match the stickers to the right words - which takes some time with a three year old - I was surprised to find out that the stickers were hardly sticking to the paper. Many of them fell out after we turned the page. The book is now a lot thicker due to a lot of tape that is now holding the stickers in place. The book also noted updated spelling. Yes, the spelling is updated, the articles are correct, but some of the tech-related words are a little outdated. My three year old likes the book, but she by far prefers the 1001 Things to Spot books by the same publisher. If you are raising your child bilingual, check out the German Amazon site, which offers a flat rate shipping to the US. This book is a start, but the quality was disappointing after experiencing other Usborne books.

I am having to buy a second copy of this book. My 2 bilingual toddlers adore the book and have worn it out. The clay figures capture the attention of my children. The book has actually helped my husband brush up on some of the French words he has forgotten over the years. This book is a must for French students of all ages. We love it!

Excellent reference!! (needs English translations, though!)

Most children like to play with words or learn new words for common things they already know in English. My 7 year old has a whole slew of such words that she likes to use, everything from the French word for "ridiculous" ("ridicule") to the Yiddish word "feh!", meaning "yuck" (a very satisfying and fun word to use). She has been curious about German words, but until I stumbled across this Usborne book, there was very little I could find that would keep her interest.

This book is excellent on a number of different levels. In addition to having over 500 common words in German (mostly nouns), the illustrations are detailed and exemplary. The words are laid out around a large, central illustration that covers one theme, like "der garten" (the garden), "das wohnzimmer" (the living room) or "der bauernhof" (the farm). The words themselves are illustrated with small pictures of the named objects, like "die kuh" for a cow, "die uhr" for a clock or "das T-shirt" for a you-know-what! These objects are used again in the large illustration, so part of the book's appeal is it's seek-and-find quality. Looking at the picture of the garage, can you find a match? A moth? A pail? How about "der schraubenschlussel" (a wrench)? They're actually trickier to find than you might think, so the book will maintain a child's interest after they grow tired of reading the German words.

The illustrations themselves are incredibly detailed, appearing to be made out of clay and material. A kindly grandfather is complete with white hair, bushy moustache and green checked shirt. A boy's hair is composed of individual strips of clay and the dog is seen running off with an ice cream cone in his mouth (that is, der hund with die eis in der mund). The people and children are multicultural and gender balanced. Clearly, it took untold hours to illustrate this work.

Parents and teachers should note this book is more of a reference than anything else. Children are not likely to sit down and read it cover to cover, nor will it teach you how to speak German-- just common nouns and numbers are in the book. There is an extensive vocabulary key in the back pages consisting of three columns: the German word, it's phonetic spelling/pronunciation and it's English meaning. There is also a short note explaining that German nouns (like French and Spanish) are female, male or neutral, hence the use of the words "der", "das" and "die", which all mean "the" in English.

Readers should also note that the English word for the object is NOT printed on the page with the object's German word, which is a bit of an oversight in my opinion. Children just learning to read English will have nothing IN English to read on any of the pages, and it's unlikely a beginning reader will attempt to tackle the pronunciation guide at the back. Also, at the top of each page is an object with a note like "such sechs cassetten", which is not translated. Only after a long time of looking through the book (and discovering the vocabulary hidden at the very back of the book) did I realize that this was encouraging the reader to "search for six cassettes" on the page. While there is the possibility that children may easily become frustrated with the long, multi-consonant spellings of German words like "wachsmalstifte" (crayon), a number of English and German words are the same, like "T-shirt", "kiwi", "hammer", "jeans" and "button", and a lot of everyday words are very similar to English words like "hund" (dog or hound) and "katze" (cat). This adds it's own search-and-find element of fun for older children who are fluent with English words.

The book will probably be the most useful for young children who are in bilingual German/English families. It has a place in a home or school library as a reference book or search-and-find game book, and hence I recommend it.

Don't let the grade level of this book fool you. It is a very valuable source of everyday words in French. Many of these words can't be found in French textbooks. The format is refreshingly different. Litchfield has created thousands of brightly colored clay figures that are photographed and used in various settings from la rue to la salle de bains. A must have for any French student from 1st grade to Graduate School.

"Blue's Valentine's Day" is a wonderful book for Valentine's Day. It features all of Blue's school friends and our friends at the Blue's Clues house as well. Steve is here, although only briefly, but his presence is definitely quite welcome.

The story is cute, easy to follow and there's even a brief game of Blue's Clues. The illustrations are vibrantly colored and the text is coordinated with a set of 31 stickers that come with the book.

Great for Valentine's Day and for Blue's Clues fans!

My 11 month daughter loves this book. The colors in the pictures are so vivid. I do think it is a little strange that violet/purple is not represented, but we like the book anyway. Lifting the flaps is a nice change of pace if you're like us and read a lot of touch and feel books. It's a good value for the price and would make a nice gift.

I checked this book out from the library to use with my children. For vocabulary, it seems to be the best thing currently out there, and I appreciated the internet link, so I could hear words I wasn't sure how to pronounce. I have since returned the book, and do not desire to buy it. Many of the people illustrated in this book are portrayed as being annoyed, malicious, angry, etc. This includes the family grouping, where the brother and sister are glaring a each other, and the mother is glaring down at them. If this book was redone with a more positive portrayal of human interactions, I would be delighted to introduce my preschoolers to it.

This book is incredibly helpful from children ages 6 all the way up to adults. You can be in French 1 in high school or AP French in college. No matter which way you go, this book helps you review for all the common French words that no tourist should be without. What's that word for watermelon? How about bathroom? Oh, dang, I forgot how to say tooth! Well, just review the pages of this book and its cute little pictures, and you'll remember in no time. It's also great if you're trying to teach young children their 2nd language, which I recommend, because children learn easier. This book will be fun for them, and for you to brush up on your French!

Still fun after all these months.

My daughter, age 4, has been enjoying this book since we received it eight months ago. Each page introduces a new theme: the kitchen, travel, the park, etc. Large, colorful drawings show how objects are used and relate to one another. Each theme has a variety of smaller pictures and stickers to teach individual words. My daugher often chose to work with the sticker book at reading time, and even though she has completed all the pages, still finds the book fascinating. I can only hope for a "Second Thousand Words in French" as a follow-up.

Eyewitness Handbooks: Flags is an excellent, up-to-date book on the flags of the world. This is actually an updated version of DK Publishers Ultimate Pocket Flags of the World, in a larger page format. The new book matches, page for page, the same text, including the introductory pages and the index. The only changes are the updates: Bosnia & Hercegovina, and the ASEAN flags. There were a few word omissions from the first book that were included in the newer book. The shortcoming of both books are the flags of nations with coats of arms on the state flag. The civilian flags were shown, and several times, the coat of arms only described, never shown. For example, Spain's coat of arms, as intricate as it is, was only described. DK's interest in keeping to one page per flag/country hampered a complete display and description of flags like these. However, the book is worth having for those who appreciate the flags of the world.

While the detailed and thorough content of this book certainly serves as an educational tool for older children and adults, it should not be overlooked for younger children as well. My two-year-old daughter (who is fascinated by flags) was mesmerized by the bright colors and intricate details. We sat for some time flipping through the pages, naming each country and discussing the shapes and colors of the flags. I can see it becoming a wonderful reference book for her as she ages. Not only does it provide country flags, but it also includes state/province flags as well. Like other DK books we've purchased, I found this one to be well worth the money and would recommend it for any age.

I bought this sticker book, along with 2 others (My Big Book of Stickers & My Giant Sticker Activity Book), for my 3 year old. He's very into sticker books right now. The other two books I purchased were great, my 3 year old LOVED them! He preferred to play with them over the Nick Jr. book. My 3 year old had a tough time removing the stickers to place in the correct spots because they kept tearing. Also, there was a whole character section in the Dora part with no stickers. Maybe it was an error in this book, but my 3 year old was very frustrated by this. He enjoyed the book because it was stickers of his favorite Nick Jr. shows. So, he did the sticker book. I feel like the book is good (not great but not bad) but my 3 year old was much happier with the other 2 books which were also more educational (always a plus).

Every essential sticker for a true Star Trek fan. My office computers and cabinets have already been assimilated! One complaint: only one Enterprise E sticker? I don't know if anyone else remembers the first Star Trek sticker book published immediately after "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." It featured images and graphics from that first film, and I drooled when I saw it in the store. Never got it. Now it probably sells on eBay for over a hundred bucks.

Well, just like Spock and the Defiant, this book has a second life in this all-new edition. This excellent collection of well-designed stickers is a lot of fun for any Trek fan with insignia, ships, labels, symbols, signs, and more ranging from Kirk's command badge to the "Deep Space Niners" baseball team logo. Borg ships, antimatter warning labels, communicators, IDICs, the Delta Flyer, Ferengi symbols...they're all here, images from all four series and most of the movies.

A unique bonus is the 'official history' and 'behind the scenes' info by Star Trek designers Michael and Denise Okuda that extensively annotates each image. This section alone means that you'll want to keep this book long after you've peeled off and used all the stickers. It's a great gift for the Star Trek fan in your life and huge fun for kids...I keep a copy in my work office and pass out stickers to visiting kids.

My only complaint, and it's a minor one: my favorite stickers are the 'Enterprise-D' Starfleet Panel Labels (in section five of the book). These are great for sticking on your computer and other electronic equipment...I would have liked to see more than one page of them! How else would my co-workers know that my Mac must remain online unless disconnect is authorized by the bridge's ops officer?

I intend to construct a WWW site for Star Trek recently, and I found this book useful. I scanned many ships and symbols from it, and put them on my website. (Despite that may illegal...) The print quality is quite fine, just slightly worse than Encyclopedia. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Okuda.

The graphic design is sophisticated and elegant, and the book introduces young children to the Star Wars universe with great style. As a special education teacher working to stimulate children with reading differences/difficulties, I am always looking for highly motivating, well-illustrated, well-written books. This book is all three, plus it has the advantage of appealing, in its subject material, not just to the younger readers (grades 1-4), but to those in grades 5-12 (yes, 12!) as well. I was able to do many interesting activities for boys and girls with learning differences, using materials based on Episodes 4, 5, and 6. So far, the story/activity books from Episode I, including this one and the three others in the four-book series, are just as carefully done, with the same potential for entrancing and motivating the low-level reader. (And I, a high-level reader, also think they are simply super for reading to great-grandchildren or to myself.) The Star Wars materials, this story in particular, offer many opportunities to develop high-level critical thinking skills, which these students usually have in abundance, and to stimulate writing and vocabulary skills. Even a short book like this one offers the opportunity to discuss acceptable behaviors, to improve choice-making, and to define personal goals. Thank you, George Lucas, Marc Cerasini and Random House, for making solid-gold books like this available!
