This book on Chagall is a steal for the price. The illustrations are lush and the text is very readable.

I knocked off a star because I would rather the book was more comprehensive, even if it meant paying more. Still highly recommended though.

This is the most wonderful book about Chagall I've ever seen. The colorful and beautiful illustrations made me so exciting. The colors are fantastic compared with other books about Chagall. I recommend this book for any Chagall fan confidently. Though it has something to be desired because of being written in Spanish instead of English, this is only for you!

A wonderful gift for fans of Chagall.

After viewing the book I ordered for my husband, he and I loved it so much, I ordered another for my sister-in-law who also absolutely loved the pictures and stories about one of our favorite artists. It makes a great gift for any Chagall fan.

I'm not sure what this other reviewer is talking about, it has to be for another book and it ended up here. This isn't really a "book" it's just a bunch of stickers. They're nice stickers though - little reproductions of some of Chagall's artwork. Pretty high-quality as far as stickers go.

Short, but still very sweet

This book collects some of Chagall's works, mostly paintings, but also mosaics, stained glass windows, and the ceiling of the Paris opera (stunning), into sections describing different parts of his life and career.

The text was intersting and illuminating in very few words, which was good, because that left more room for full-color plates of Chagall's brilliant works! I could just stare at each one for many minutes and get more out of it with each minute! The man was a genius. And the plates are pretty high-quality, so it's easy to really enjoy them.

The only reason I did not give this book five stars was I thought it was a little short, considering the scope of Chagall's work. It would be difficult, indeed, to produce a book that would be completely comprehensive, and maybe the author had a page limitation because of the series he was writing for, but I sure would have liked to see more works presented.

I have some other books on Chagall in the queue: one on watercolors and gouaches, and two books of lithographs. I'll report back on those once I've read and gazed at them.

After eating at Belle Meade and getting hooked on the cheese grits and fried chicken, I had to buy the cookbook. This one does not disappoint. Everything I have made from this is wonderful. Fried green tomatoes, bread pudding...all of it fabulous. It is also easy enough for every day cooking. With the exception of occasional ingredients that are local specialties (poke salet, spiced round) there aren't quirky ingredients or overly complicated recipes. It might be the one cookbook on my shelf I couldn't live without.

This cookbook is wonderful!
I was looking for a cookbook that had the recipes that my Grandmothers, from Southern Illionis, would cook when I would visit every summer.

What you will find most amazing about this cookbook is that you will have many of the ingredients in your panty. (Even if it's not stocked with fancy foodstuff!)

My husband thinks the meatloaf recipe is simply the best and raves and raves about it! The cheese straws I made for a Thanksgiving were all devoured in one night! As did they love the pimento cheese. The beef stew is wonderful as is the pot roast, chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, and the maccaroni and cheese is great. I've made the beef stew. Oh my goodness, was it good! Oh and the recipe for Banana Nut Bread is the best I've ever made, per my neighbors, my doctor, his wife, and even my Mama. Forget about my kids, I make double and triple batches and it's gone within a few day! For a Christmas get together I made the fudge pie and bought peppermint ice cream.(I had been out all day and was so tired, it really is an easy dessert!) The men loved it even more than the kids!

If Mrs. Stamps ever reads these reviews: Please get another cookbook out with some "More Southern Basics".

When I use this cookbook I am always thinking about my Grandmothers. They loved their men and their children, grandchildren and great grand-children, and most of all they loved who they were - Women raising a family, being smart, yet furgal when it came to providing for those they loved. And so proud.

Can a cookbook evolve all this emotion?
Yes it can and it does.

Proceed with caution...

I have made some wonderful dishes from this book, but it contains its fair share of stinkers, as well. After having the misfortune of coming across several failed recipes, I've come to the conclusion that this must be the author's first attempt at transcribing recipes which she's been cooking from memory for years. This cookbook is riddled with errors and omissions -- it clearly has not been kitchen tested by the publisher. The cheese straws required additional butter, the oven baked pork chops don't tell you what to do with the flour mixture (it's for dredging the pork chops before browining), the Hoppin' John doesn't work with fresh blackeyed peas, even though it says it will (too much liquid), and the cranberry loaf just flat-out does not work (this was an expensive failure, as it contains two cups of walnuts). In addition, the book is also light on details such as pan sizes and exact cooking times.

That said, the maccaroni and cheese, greens with tomatoes, pumpkin bread, date nut cookies, white bread, cucumber sandwiches, and real french dressing were all successful and quite good.

This is a nice book to play with, but I wouldn't recommend cooking anything new for the first time when you're having company over. You also might want to cross-reference any recipes that catch your interest with recipes from other cookbooks or the internet just to be safe.

For a Northerner who can't cook (i.e. follow dirctions wellwhen cooking) and doesn't particularly like to cook, I LOVED this cookbook. Now you may be asking yourself why a self described non-cooking woman would by this book. It's very simple. I've eaten the wonderful food Martha Stamps cooks up at her restaurant at the Belle Meade Plantation. I'll also confess that initially I purchased the book just because I loved the tea punch and knew I'd never remember the recipe until I got home from Nashville.

What I found not only by eating at her restaurant but by actually reading the cookbook is that her passion for cooking is clearly evident. While the recipes can stand on their own, what
makes this cook book so special are the details about Martha and her family that accompany the recipes. It is clearly evident that cooking is not just a vocation for her but a passion. These recipes aren't just thrown together, they have a history to them.

Even if you buy this book for just one recipe - it's worth it.

Scheffler is the Matisse of the rubber stamp world. She lays out her projects clearly and with skill. Fantastic "rainy day" ideas for kids--and grandma too. If you never though stamping was for you (like me) give this book a browse and you'll want to stamp everything in sight. (I wish my cat were slower!) This book is definitive and indispensible.

I expected a lot more after referring to other customer reviews. This book is somewhat informative, but the projects depicted were not that exciting. The photos of the projects in the back of the book were nice, but no explanation given as to how they were done...only credits to the artists. I still feel I will need a more in depth, stimulating stamping book for further instructions. Overall, I would not give a recommendation.

I am new to Rubber Stamping and have bought a few books - this one was by far the best for me as a beginner! It clearly lays out many techniques, gives tips and hints and shows some nice project ideas. The techniques are laid out for each project, but they are easily adapted to whatever project of your own you want to do based on that technique. Not only paper projects, there are many others as well.

I got this for my just turned 3 year old grandson, and I
think it may be a bit advanced for him. It's a really nice sticker book, and it would be wasteful to just give it to a toddler that is too young for it. With some supervision, he could actually be directed on the placement of the stickers, etc. but, I think it will be more enjoyable for him to wait several months to really get more out of the concepts presented.

I recommend this to anyone who has a young child learning how to either say their first words or how to learn their ABC's. It's like a portion of Pre-School right in this one sticker book. My daughter is 2 and a half and very resistant to learning her letters from mommy. I have to be very creative to get her to do things without realizing she is actually learning something. This sticker book hit the mark completely! We did it for half an hour today and she really enjoyed herself!
I wish I had found this earlier- I've been banging my head against a wall for quite awhile with this one.
As to the other review- our stickers stuck on great with no problems, so I don't know if maybe that one was defective or something.

We have several of the touch and feel books in our home and our toddler has always enjoyed them. Kids love touching different things and the touch and feel books give them several different textures to work on. This is a great Christmas themed book where kids can touch Santa's soft, fluffy bear, push the soft, squishy nose of a reindeer, touch the shiny red christmas ornament, and so on...One can, I suppose question the educational value of these books but why must all books be educational? Bottom line is that all of these books are fun for kids to read and touch.

My daughter received this book for her first Christmas and now three years later she still loves it. The pictures are bright and cheery. You can touch Santa's fluffy beard, press the reindeer's squishy nose, and feel the fuzzy fleece of the caroler's hat. When my daughter was a baby I used to hold her on my lap and help her stroke the different textures. Now that she is older she likes to take down several of the books in thuis series at a time and look through them herself. The text is simple and the pictures are delightful. Best of all this is a well made sturdy book that will last for years to come. I recommend it to everyone.

An Excellent continuation in the Witches of Dixie series
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-01
This is a continuation of the story of the four witches from "Dixie". The first book was a series of short stories. We were introduced to four women all going through different issues in their lives. One of the women was Savannah Monroe. She had concerns her business of making magical handbags was beginning to decline. In this book she is the leading character. Her business is thriving and she is becoming comfortable in her new life in a new city. The book begins with her receiving a "gift" from the faeries - a small kitten. For Savannah the kitten brings joy and happiness that is associated with young kittens. She gets another message that she should be open to love. At first Savannah is concerned that she isn't ready for a new relationship but puts it in the hands of the Goddess. She also learns about being an empath and gets a better understanding of emotions.

Later in the book another woman is introduced. Noel becomes a neighbor and friend during a time when Savannah needs one the most. Ravena (makes organic catnip mice and herbal remedies) and Mirabella (an abstract artist) have smaller roles than they did in the first book. It is good to see where they are in their lives. I would have missed them if they hadn't included.

It is very easy to relate to these women. Each one brings something different to the story. They are like most women. They worry about everyday things and wonder what tomorrow will bring. The book has a message of faith, hope and love. It is easy to read about these emotions but it is another thing to really feel them. I could feel the hope and faith Savannah had that she would find love and happiness. It is a wonderful book that makes you feel good about life.

I found this book to be very entertaining as well as insightful. Laura Stamps made this story very informative of wiccan culture and relationships of women in general. I was also pleased with the author's true understanding of a cats personality, and the humor within. The story flows smoothly and kept me engrossed all the way through the book. I am looking forward to more books in this series.

Since I hadn't read the first book, I was concerned I'd be missing something. The series isn't set up that way and the author gives enough background information to where I didn't feel lost in the story.

For me, the first half of the book lacked the conflict needed to move the story forward. It's basically a day to day in the life of Savannah. It wasn't until the middle when the story became interesting. I also felt the relationship between Savannah and Donnie was rushed. The book ended before I was able to get excited about their relationship.

On the plus side, the way Stamps is able to string words together in a sentence is beautiful. I wish all writers could do this with such ease. Her dialog is equally done to perfection, and that's not all. She creates an environment to be envied by every reader. By the end of the book, I wanted Savannah and her friends to be my friends and neighbors. They are all so believable that you have me wanting to know if they really exist.

Very enjoyable!

"What Witches Want" is Book Two of Laura Stamps' "Witchery Series" -- I did not get read the first one, but this is fine as book two is a stand-alone story. I think it is nice to know that you can pick a book up and read it and understand it without having to track down the first one.
"What Witches Want" is a unique read. It was written in present tense ("she walks to the door" instead of the usual "she walked to the door"), and it took me a couple pages to used to it. Actually this ended up being one of the things I enjoyed about the book because it was as if you were actually living the main character's, Savannah Monroe, life. In other words, you were Savannah.
This is a very visual book. The adjectives and writing style are probably the most descriptive I have ever read. Along with the present tense writing, takes you from an interested onlooker to being Savannah. You see hear the birds singing, or can picture the color of the sky.
Savannah's a Wiccan Faery Witch (the same as the writer). I have read other books where the character might be a witch, but it's more of a background thing. In "What Witches Want" there are spells, invocations/incantations, rituals sprinkled throughout the book. Pretty interesting for someone like me (I'm Catholic) who does not know much about the Wiccan faith. It goes right along with what's happening with Savannah or her friends and not just "stuck" in the book to fill spaces. Oh you get a recipe or herbal cure here and there too, which is sort of fun.
You want a book with sex scenes that go on for pages and are outlandish, this isn't that kind of book. The sex scenes were tastefully done and believable.
I really enjoyed getting to know Savannah and her friends. I did not go into a story line, because, well, it takes half of the fun out of reading the book.. All I will say is her cats are a real kick. You will get wrapped up in Savannah and her friends lives and just want to keep reading to find out what will go on next. It is an easy reading book and if you have time, you probably could read it in one sitting. It took me a week, but each time I picked it up was like reading a letter from an dear friend. I hope to be able to find book one at my library, or local used bookstore. I look forward to book 3 "Call of the Witches".

Edward Hoffman has created a wonderful exploration of the Hebrew language for us. His Hebrew Stamp Kit with an excellent hand book on The Hebrew Alphabet is a pleasure to use and have. I've found the kit helpful and accurate. It comes in a little wooden box with all the letters in rubber secured on a wooden block and a small ink pad with a book that tells you about every letter.

It has become my first venture into the Hebrew language. Hebrew is one of the oldest and earliest forms of language still in active use today. My sister Ephrat (Turqiz) who lives in Israel gave me my first lessons on Hebrew when she wrote my name in the Hebrew language. But it also helps having a Jewish mother who can help you along.

Hoffman goes into detail as his layout for each letter is nicely designed on almost every page of the small booklet. He not only gives you an excellent illustration on the shape of each letter but also backs that up with good historical information that makes learning the language new and exciting. I'm sure you will find this kit a lovely addition to your exploration of the Hebrew language. Check out my review on the Moleskine large sketch book...The two items work great together. Remember you only get in life what you put into it. Smile...today's a great day to learn Hebrew and use your stamp pad.

As a long time Hitchhikers reader/viewer/listener this book comes in rather far down the enjoyment list. I have not seen the new film, but have the older DVD based on the BBC program, saw the original BBC shows, heard and recorded all the radio programs and have the original books. Perhaps the book documenting parts of how the new film was made would be useful to movie people, I'm not a very friendly viewer of movies and usually prefer the books and radio stuff to feed my imagination. So with that bias put out for all to see, you can judge how useful these opinions might me for purchasing the book.
Books can't do much to get us inside the realy technical stuff of a modern special effects movie. So it is not a surprise that this gives a fairly superficial treatment of the technical aspects. What is less understandable is why central characters get an equally surface only treatment and it really escapes me as to why Marvin the paranoid robot is made to look like a childs cartoon neutered blob. What audience were the producers trying to reach, and how can we imagine pains down the diodes on the left side of a blob! Even more puzzling is the lack of a systematic framework about life, the universe and everything. So yes, I am not glad I purchased the book.

I devoured each book as I could afford it, always eager for more. I was thrilled when the trilogy expanded. When the PBS station out of Washington DC started playing the BBC TV show, I was in heaven. And when the NPR station I listened to at college started playing the original radio show, I rigged up a way to record the shows on audio cassette so I wouldn't miss an episode.

So you can understand my embarrassment when I admit that I have yet to see the movie. But I've done the next best thing-I've read the book about making the movie. And I want to see the movie even more now.

This book is incredible. The pictures include not only final set designs, but the various stages that the designs went through. The Guide itself is pictured in every incarnation it went through. The Heart of Gold is shown in all its splendor. The costuming for Marvin, everyone's favorite paranoid android, is shown in enough detail to make me feel very sorry for the actor who had to wear it. Concept sketches abound. Any book that shows the actual bypass plans for both the Cottington bypass (inside front) and the Hyperspace bypass that requires the demolition of the Earth (inside back) has to be on every fan's must-read list.

The justification for changing parts of the "original" story are made in the book as well. True Hitchhiker's fans need no justification, though-we know that none of the various forms that the story has taken agrees with any other version. It should come as no surprise that the movie is different from the books, which were different from the TV series, which was different from the radio show, which is different from the lunchbox...

Anyone who watches movies and wonders "How did they DO that?" needs this book. Any Douglas Adams fan needs this book. Anyone who has ever written Vogon poetry needs this book.

The movie came out on DVD on Tuesday of this week. It's been out two whole days, and I haven't bought it yet. This book will get me through until I can get my copy-I might even be able to hold out for the collector's edition that will surely come out soon.

Very cool book!

I've been obsessed with H2G2 lately, and as soon as I heard about this book, I had to get it. There are many pictures in here, from concept drawings to in-depth photos and diagrams of practically everything. It explains the Vogons and what they had to do to get them moving, the Guide's appearance, each character's personality and clothing, Magrathea's factory floor... even everything about Arthur's house.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that Arthur, Zaphod, and Trillian get four pages of coverage, while Ford only gets two. Then again, I'm a huge Ford fan, so I'm biased.

If you're a fan, you must get this book.

A Fun Book

OK, so you've read the books (several times), seen the movie (several times), going to buy the DVD when it comes out. Why would you want to buy a book on the movie?

Well, maybe because you want to see how they did some things. Maybe because the still shots in the movie give you time to look at what you are seeing for a while instead of being forced to go on to something else.

The making of a major motion picture like this is a big effort combining the talents of a lot of highly skilled folk. If you're into movies, knowing how they had to import material for Arthur Dent's pajamas from Turkey makes a very good trivia point to have at your fingertips.

I guess there's really no good good, solid, sound reason to buy this book. Except I like it, I found the pictures and writing to be fun to read. I've loaned it out to a few other fans. Good reason or not, I think you should go out and buy it.

My initial response was that the book had a lot of empty pages and 4 sheets of very detailed but small stickers. However the childen loved it. It keeps them busy especially childen six years and up. But it's not really suitable for the younger children, not flashy enough. I would suggest one of the other publications with less stickers

I ordered this book thinking that it was like a regular sticker book (one that told a story and you put the stickers on the pages). But it was a sticker book where you write down everything you find out while playing the game, watching the cartoon, and collecting the toys. It was a good book if you want it for those reasons.

It's cool.

This book is a cool introduction to 33 of the new Pokemon. The best ones without doubt are Quagsire (blue platypus), Quilava (blue and white fire starter Pokemon stage 1 evolution), Bayleef (green grass Pokemon stage 1 evolution that supposedly emits a spicy smell from its neck's leaves-I love that, it reminds me of candles), Hoppit ("Cottonweed Pokemon;," isn't that an adorably precious name? Cute lil' pink thing that blows in the wind and predicts storms in the show), and Elekid (electric type that looks like an outlet plug). The book tells about them and gives you a sticker for each, plus stickers of lots of old Pokemon, too, in cool poses. There are a few mistakes, like calling Hoppit Hoppip and Maril Mareep, but that aside, it's really pretty cool. You can fill it out as you make your way to becoming a Pokemom master!

A Great Book For Someone Getting Back Into the Hobby

I collected stamps in the 1970s and 1980s as my grandmother was a big collector and I was fascinated by her stamp books, which were terrific. I had a pretty good collection myself just from her discards. But when she passed away over 20 years ago, I lost interest in the hobby. But recently, I pulled out my old stamp book and got the urge to get it back into shape and to get it current. And the 33rd edition of the US Postal Service's book is a great book to use as a guide to get back in the hobby. First, it shows pictures of almost every stamp ever issued by the USPS over the years in glorious color, so it is a great book just to look at. But I use it to see just how daunting it will be to catch up to collecting almost 25 years of stamps because the USPS has issued considerably more stamps on an annual basis than they did before. I also use it as a guideline as to how much I should pay for stamps on online auctions to make sure I don't overpay by too much. The size of the book makes it easy to use as well.

I've really enjoyed rediscovering this hobby and really think this book has made it even more fun!

If you are looking for a high and low price for an individual US stamp, this is the book for you. It does not price by the condition of the stamp, but the book will give you some idea of the price range a stamp would fall within.

i just thought i'd write in saying what an amazing book this is. i purchacd it a few months back, and even though its from 2003, it combines indivual prices of all stamps, and first day covers. everything is in color and very easy to read and move around in. i find its a bit better then Scott's. as fdc's are included right there on the page.
