Another great Maisy book. Even though you can't reuse the stickers, you still have a great little book to read when you're through.

Great fun for little kids!

I just got a few of these for the kids of my friends while we were visiting them. The kids (aged 2 and 4) had a blast while we got to "catch up." I had no idea they would be such a hit! And you can't beat the price! Plus, they are educational. You can use them to ask questions - "what kind of animal is this? what kind of noise does it make? where would it go in this picture?" They're just great!

Better than the Basic Stamp Manual
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 32 total.

This book is much better than the regular Stamp manual. It starts out explaining how everything works and then covers each of the commands by function which is a great idea (instead of alphabetizing them). After that the author shows you how things work by bringing you through a series of projects. Unlike some books most of these projects are simple enough to breadboard in 10 or 15 minutes. There are a few projects that are more complicated at the end so you can get some feel for how do do a real design too (like the morese code keyer that has a pcb).

The projects make sense and illustrate specific topics. There are some games, a capacitance meter, a logic probe, an A/D converter. The book is probably meant as a text book (it has exercises at the end of the chapters) but I found it great for self study (the answers are in the back).

The information on the PIC is helpful and I have even starting programming PICs as a result of reading this book (it comes with plans to make a Stamp-based PIC programmer).

The Early History of Women *And* Film (Not "In" Film)

Every so often, we women complain about women in the media. When it comes to movies, we complain about the diminished roles for maturing women; we complain about the way women are portrayed in films; we complain about the history of films, most notably The Hollywood Code which seemed to destroy & limit our potential as women in film -- on both sides of the camera. But long before all that, in the very beginning, it was even worse.

In 'Movie-Struck Girls: Women & Motion Picture Culture After the Nickelodeon', by Shelley Stamp, we learn more than just the roles of women in films or behind the camera -- we learn about women's role as patrons of cinema.

The book is an eye-opening look at a long ignored part of American film history -- and an astonishing look at the history of women as media consumers.

Stamp spent over ten years researching for this book. She studied trade journals, fan magazines, ephemera, and many official documents and records at the National Board of Censorship Archives in New York City, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles, & the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Many of the films she reviewed are no longer readily available, let alone circulating, but can be found at the Library of Congress & the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

It sounds like a huge undertaking, & I thank her for it. 'Movie-Struck Girls' presents a wealth of information that I had never known before.

In 'Movie-Struck Girls' you learn all about these long-hidden details of American film history & it's collision with turn of the century American values -- including titles, studios, stars, organizations, & political figures. For a person who adore film & is a passionate feminist, this is a great read. Why it's as thrilling as those old adventure serial films!

Stamp does a great job of presenting this long ignored part of film -- and women's -- history. It's definitely an academic read, which means it is meaty enough for those who want to further search for clues, artifacts & films themselves. It may not read like a novel, but it's so fascinating & full of details, it won't disappoint. Fans of film, especially silent films, cannot call themselves educated in the subject unless they know this history. And women, well, we start to see a much larger image emerge -- our complaints regarding women in the media have much deeper roots than we previously knew.

YOUNG READERS ENJOY TAKING PART
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-14
Very young readers will enjoy taking part in this sticker book as they're asked to put a mother cow next to her calves, find a puppy, and put two ducklings in a pond.

They'll also improve their vocabularies as they look for a foal to put by the mother horse, and learn to differentiate between similar animals as they seek out a rooster, a turkey, a hen, and geese.

Farm scenes are always fascinating to young eyes, and this book is not an exception.

A real boon is the fact that the stickers are made of a plastic material so they can be used over and over again.

I have been a Christian for many years, I have always read and studied the Bible. However, I still didn't quite understand what some verse really meant. This Bible has been and incredible eye opening experience to what God says to us.

This book is great and has been very useful for me, because I've been collecting stamps fo a long time, but only started collecting U.S. stamps a few months ago. It has full color pictures, uses the Scott numbering system, contains a lot of helpful professional advice about buying, selling and taking care of stamps. I've been fascinated by U.S. stamps and this book includes everything one needs to know about them.
