The recipes are great. I like the idea of the vanilla powder, which I had never heard of before. I also love all the little
hints for presentation which are found throughout the book. Great way to make affordable gifts for teachers, neighbors and
friends.

Let me say that this is a nice book. But, it doesn't have all the color photos, details and recipes that the later editions
do so if you have those, don't expect the same with this one. I buy these for friends annually because they are that great
and this one is pretty good. I think the third and fourth are the best so far, and this one is just average. The recipes
are incredible, however, so it is worth the price of admission just for those. I love these books and it's hard to be disappointed
with them once you start using them.

Complexity that has often been overlooked

I enjoyed reading Patch's book a lot due to the - in my opinion - very balanced description of Bruening within the collapsing
Weimar Republic. It descripes very well the complex situation democratic politicians have been faced with at the end of the
Weimar Republic. Bruening himself is evaluated regarding his politics under his regime of the "Notstandsverordnungen" by Patch
in the context of his intentions and beliefs as well as in the context of tactical moves, he took to maintain power. Unfortunately,
contemporary science especially in Germany focuses on specific politicians only and evaluate latter almost always in terms
of their standing in relation to the successors in form of the NSDAP from an ideological point of view. Fortunately, Patch
does not repeat this mistake. So Bruening, Patch explains clearly, was alienated within the dominant leftish emigrant group
opposing the Nationalsocialist due to his somewhat ambivalent point of views. Patch examines correctly, that Bruening was
in line with Stresemann, but less gifted, in finding a balance (even after the war) to follow an integrational international
policy and failed finally also in his struggle with Adenauer in the 1950s.

In their physical appearance the Branston brothers displayed an obvious family resemblance, but underneath the skin, they
couldn't have been more different. Joe was a loser, a hobo on horseback, not above swamping saloons for cents as he bummed
his way across the west. Billy was a go-getter, making it with the girls; the young kid with the Midas touch, setting up his
own ranch in Texas. When Joe found he couldn't even earn a few pesos in Mexico, he decided to ride north and look up his kid
brother. So, when he finally made it to Brightwater, he was full of expectations that his life was to take a turn. It changed
direction all right, but not in the way he expected.
B.J. Holmes has a great knack for hooking his reader right from the beginning and not letting him go until the end. Here it's done by having Joe arrive in Brightwater just in time to witness a funeral, which turns out to be his brother's. It seems Billy died of an accident, something Joe finds hard to believe. The local law - and indeed the other townsfolk - are of the opinion of "good riddance to bad trash", something Joe cannot accept.
Holmes soon has the reader sharing Joe's frustrations as he attempts to discover the truth about his brother's activities. His disbelief at the accusations being part of the well-written hook that will have the reader not wanting to put the book down until the truth is learnt.
Even though I guessed the twist ending it didn't really spoil what is in fact a great book, a fast, easy to read story without padding that ties everything up nicely at the end.
Well worth keeping an eye out for.

First, let me say that I am a HUGE Gooseberry Patch fan. Currently I own six of their books: Slow Cooker Recipes, Best-Ever
Casseroles, What's for Dinner?, Come on Over, One-Pot Meals and From Grandma's Kitchen. I just LOVE the books. The recipes
are very easy, not too fancy, don't take long and always taste good. They are easy to read and the spiral binding keeps the
books open flat. I think out of all of the books, I have only made one thing that I didn't care for. They are just great,
great books to have around and I love the little tips on each page, the way that every book is broken up by meats and categories
and just all of the other little helpful charts and equivalents that are in each book. In my opinion, they are just great
additions to any cookbook collection and I love having them in my kitchen.
I have only made one thing out of this book so far (Yummy Peach Dessert) but it came out really well. I am looking forward to making other things as well. However, what I really like about this book is how they have it divided into cooking styles rather than meat...they have a section for pot/skillet/pressure cooking meals, oven meals, slow-cooker meals, microwave meals, grilled, dinner salads and a final dessert section. It's a really neat book and I am looking forward to working my way through it.
I would recommend it. I just can't give it five stars based on one recipe!

Sometimes smaller is better and sometimes it isn't... I was disappointed in the size of this book. It will get lost on a book
shelf because its only 4" tall. Its flimsy, and while its cute, it doesn't quite measure up to the standard spiral-bound patch
book.
The recipes all look good, however, so it has a good selection, but for this price I expected it to be larger. Not my favorite Gooseberry Patch item.
