Walking through the Victoria & Albert museum in London a few years back, little did I know that the collection of British biscuit tins that had me mesmerized was donated by the late M.J. Franklin. The quality of this book featuring his collection is absolutely magnificent. The book is a rectangular shape and contains 325 stunning colour plates printed on thick glossy paper. It is bound in red cloth accompanied by gilt print on the cover. It is further protected by a hard sleeve decorated with old biscuit advertisements. The greater theme of this book is the art of decorative packaging. Three eras are defined being: Victorian(1868-1901), Edwardian(1902-1914) and Twenties & Thirties(1920-1939). There are extensive details i.r.o. date, company(the firm that used the tin), title, manufacturer, size, history and further marks of each tin (where available). It is one of the few specialist books that will be enjoyed by each and every person that appreciates any form of extinct art such as decorating biscuit tins. It is one of those rare books that you wish everybody could see. The author's royalties have been given to the national society for mentally handicapped children.

Great Enlarged Second Edition of British Planemakers From 1700

This very important book is in fact Mr Goodman's second historical survey on ancient hand tools. In 1964, Goodman published The history of woodworking tools to great critical acclaims from collectors and scholars.
This "2nd edition: greatly enlarged" of British Planemakers from 1700 offers a unique historical survey of the planes and their makers in 18th and 19th Century Britain. Mr. Goodman's well written text delivers to its readers an in-depth analysis of how the Hand Plane were made in the workshops of England.
The Author's un-mistakable British wit makes for a very funny and entertaining read! On page VI, the book is aptly dedicated "To the long-suffering wives of all old-plane buffs, whose patience and forbearance have made this study possible". (Thank you, Mrs. Goodman!)

A necessity for anyone who loves one of the 30 million "best friends made". The first-ever compilation of the Build-A-Bear Workshop line covers all critters from the first bears made in October 1997 through June 2005. Includes Photos, vital stats and fun facts about each bear. Includes limited edition animals, cause-related bears and more!
I love having my copy at hand when I find a new friend at a yard sale. It's SUCH a help to identify plush animals. Plus the photos are awesome for a collector's guide. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Although the Canadian Football League is not well known outside of our North Country neighbor, the hobby of collecting CFL cards is alive and thriving. The 4th Edition of THE CHARLTON CANADIAN FOOTBALL CARD PRICE GUIDE is a concise, top notch compendium to CFL cards that covers all the bases and then some. Football fans and card collectors who follow the CFL know that the wild, three-down game boasts a long history of outstanding players. The hobby of CFL card collecting likewise features some great cards. From post World War II stars like Russ Jackson, Jackie Parker, Normie Kwong, and Angelo Mosca, to more modern attractions like Americans Joe Theismann, Warren Moon, and Doug Flutie, the CFL has seen it all. This 4th Ed. guide by W. K. Cross and Richard Scott is an essential information source for collectors wishing to broaden their hobby focus to include our Canadian gridiron cousins. Arranged chronologically, complete checklists of the major sets and suggested prices are included throughout. The alphabetical checklist at the end, showing the colleges attended by every CFL player who has a card, is a feature of special interest to alumni collectors. All in all, this is a superior price guide to a small, fascinating hobby, reasonably priced and attractively bound. By Mike Bonner, author of COLLECTING FOOTBALL CARDS, A COMPLETE GUIDE WITH PRICES. Meet Fergal. He is a loner and a bit of an eccentric. His parents often worry about him. They like to think he is clever, but sometimes even being clever doesn't explain everything.
A recent visit to the grocery store with his mother has Fergal excited about something new. While at the store, he discovered the wonders of the "bargain bin." It is where items with bumps and dents and nearly expired dates go to be rescued by some value-minded shopper. What Fergal finds in the bargain bin is a shiny can missing its label. The mystery of the unidentified can inspires Fergal to begin a collection. Fergal becomes obsessed with label-free cans. In no time at all his collection grows to over 40 cans. His parents think it is a bit strange but hopefully harmless.
When the collection takes over the bookshelf in Fergal's room, his mother insists that for each new can he finds he must open one of the old ones. She considers it a waste to just collect the things and not use the contents. This leads to Fergal's gruesome discovery.
One might think that Fergal is the only person to think of collecting unlabeled cans, but he bumps into a fellow can-collector at the store one day. Her name is Charlotte. She has also opened several of her cans and found something equally as gruesome as Fergal. Together they set out to solve the mystery.
Alex Shearer's CANNED offers misfit characters, humor, and just the right amount of "gross" stuff to satisfy typical middle grade and teen readers. Even though the story is set in England and uses British jargon, most readers will relate to Fergal and Charlotte as they quietly carry on their investigation under the noses of clueless adults. This wacky, off-beat adventure is well worth checking out.
