I spent years looking for volume 3 (of the Harper & Brothers edition of 1857-59). This is an excellent candidate for a Dover
reprint. It is the most engrossing travelog I've ever read. Despite innumerable difficulties and the very real threat of
death from the fanatically religious tribesmen, Barth fulfilled the mission assigned him by the British government, and brought
back a vast amount of information about northern and central Africa.

This is a GREAT book. It is easy to read and well-written. You will enjoy reading it if you have to study Lewis and Clark
or just to improve your knowledge about the Trail. There are three extremely interessant parts:
- The focus on the Northwest at the time of the Trail
- How people have been celebrating the importance of the Expedition / Centennial, etc...
- The conversation between Lang, Conner, Zinn and Abbott
Plus: pictures punctuate the book / useful for people who are not from the Northwest

Excellent book -- only the beginning though . It will help to
reconcile Americans to the anti-Christian Orthodox policy of the US administration in the last 100 + years .
reconcile Americans to the anti-Christian Orthodox policy of the US administration in the last 100 + years .
US anti-Semitism resulted in the unnecessary murder of many European Jews . The same is happening to Orthodox Christians in Cyprus .
Excellent book --- the truth hurts !!!!!

Once again Professor Ellis has top-roped us Phillistines onto the challenging academic ledge that embraces the exploration
narrative as powerful literature. Honestly, his scintillating start is followed by an even more promising introduction that
speaks to the Gore-tex and fleece crowd, and draws a circle at base camp. While paying heed to scholarly conventions, Ellis'
familar style shares an adrenaline-laced tale with the rest of us that emerges from the dusty and stained journals from the
likes of London's Alpine Club. His insightful portrayal of Mackinder's 1899 imperial ascent of Mt. Kenya ressurects images
of the Duke of Abruzzi, and his equally thoughtful recitation of Noel's 1924 film documentary of the British expedition on
Everest is the stuff of current fancy. But Dr. Ellis initiates the reader 's stunned self-arrest at 58 year old Annie Smith
Peck's amazing first ascent of Huascar'an in 1908. Peck, the original post modernist, is equally comfortable planting a banner,
VOTES FOR WOMEN, on the summit, as she is detailing the arduous athletic nature of mountaineering and commenting on the rich
social, cultural and geographical landscape from which the massif juts. One can only hope that Ellis will abandon his fine
research, and ancient volumns, and chronicle his own peripatetic life's journey up the scree slopes of distant desolate peaks;
after all, that's where the real story begins. 5.12

This is a fantastic item, and very reasonably prices. We will be taking a vacation in which the travel back home will take
us past the Vicksburg battlefield. I feel this product will allow us to make the most of that visit.
It features an annimated movie that details Grants Mississippi campaign which concluded with the seige of Vicksburg. This give a great background on the importance of this site in the entire war, as well as how battles leading up to the Vicksburgh seige set up the final confrontation.
In addition to the above movies are featurettes detailing individual battles, complete with 360 degree panoramic photos from the modern day battlefield site. It even features small featurettes detailing the weapons of that day and time.
For those who visit the battlefield itself, there is a Tour Guide CD that will walk you through your visit at Vicksburg.
To get a full understanding of this battle, and more importantly the entire Civil War, this is a highly recommended product.

This inexpensive 288 page book is quite an addition to the library of anyone interested in Victorian science, 19th century
travel, oceanographic history, or island anthropology. The book includes a rich narrative of the voyage that began in 1872
as a scientific expedition to survey flora and fauna on land and sea including deep dredging of the ocean floor. Period photographs
and engravings are supplemented by modern photographs; illustrations are found on most pages. My favorites are color reproductions
of Pelham Aldrich's journal pages that include great watercolors of the ship and scenes from the voyage painted on the same
pages as his narrative script.
I would recommend the hardcover since I'm not sure the paperback has all of the color plates.

An excellent narrative full of hard-to-find details on the life, people and the land in the Amazon region during the mid-nineteenth
century. This book has inspired Alfred R. Wallace and Henry W. Bates, in their mid-twenties, to come to the Amazon region
on April 25, 1848 and start one of the most celebrated expeditions made by Victorian scientists on that region. Certainly,
Edwards' book still is a great source of inspiration (and information) to all interested in the wonders and mysteries of the
Amazon region.
