Rock Climbing Utah offers the most comprehensive guide to climbing the best rock Utah has to offer. Utah boasts some of the most diverse, beautiful, and bizarre rock formations imaginable. From the granite canyons of the Wasatch, to the lunar-like sandstone of Canyonlands Rock Climbing Utah will introduce you to the most unbelievable experiences in your climbing career. It is difficult to cover such a wide spectrum of climbing routes, ecosystem changes, and skill levels but this guide does a wonderful job. For a broad overview of underrated climbing that often rivals Yosemite, this guide is difficult to match.

Biographical gem

Review Date: 2005-04-29
Romancing the Rockies is a biographical study of the people who have been attracted to the Rockies by its romance; sometimes seduced and rejected, other times wooed and wed, but always held spellbound by its majesty.

Arranged chronologically, the book starts with the earliest aboriginal inhabitants of the Canadian Rockies and moves up through early explorers and pioneers to modern times. The book can broadly be broken down into two parts: historical figures and contemporary luminaries.

Bringing historical figures to light is a difficult task; the author has to reach back in time, and, working with often scant records, bring relevance and insight to an individual while simultaneously adhering to the biographical facts. From explorer Peter Findler, the first known European to enter the Rockies, to naturalist painter Paul Kane and botanist David Douglas, who came to chronicle the region, Brennan manages to portray their lives in an approachable manner that illuminates the personalities and motives of these unique and adventurous people in sympathetic and insightful manner. Even though centuries separate us from their worlds, they step out of the dry, sterile environment of the history book and come alive under the author's skill.

In the latter part of his work, Brennan deals with many of the colorful and eccentric individuals who called the Rockies their home, or simply visited and were captivated by its beauty. His narrative includes the bizarre tale of Charles Bedeaux, a French millionaire who, in the 1930s, launched a filming trek across the northern Rockies to the Alaskan panhandle, complete with 10 Citroen trucks, several cases of champagne, his wife and mistress. He also recounts the exploits of Marilyn Munroe when she came to Jasper in 1953 to shoot River of No Return with Robert Mitchum, the visit to Banff of King George VI in 1939, and the tale of British spy Conrad O'Brien-ffrench, who leased his homestead ranch east of Banff to Princess Margaret during her Canadian tour in 1958. In all, it is an entertaining, illuminating and enjoyable account of one of Canada's most beautiful regions.

I really enjoyed this book since I have always been fascinated by Nepal and especially the Himalayas. I find vacations to be times of great introspection and my travels always leave an imprint on my soul. The author of this book lets you see the secrets of her soul as she makes her transition on this journey. She shows you the good and the not so admirable things that happen on an experience such as this. Her use of language is beautifully nuanced and evokes strong images of what it must be like to hike in one of the most awesome and remote areas of the world. I feel that if ever I get to go on a trek, that this book will have helped prepare me.

Buy this book and go climb some great new routes !!

I was excited to finally get my hands on this new guidebook. There has been LOTS of new route developement in these areas and, until this book came out, there was a gap in the available route information.

The layout here is well organized, the topos and pictures are first quality. The author is funny to read and also tells a few great stories. Hopefully the climbing community in the Northeast is just as psyched as I was to "discover" these new routes and climbing areas.

Having had 20 years practical experience in the snow safety business I can assure any potential readers that buying this book is money well spent. So many books on avalanches tell us about snow, about weather etc, but fail to really come to grips with the "how to tell whats been happening and is it dangerous" lesson. The many visual clues that one has when looking at potential avalanche terrain are here very well documented and explained. Easy to understand. Highly recommended

This is the pretty much the current and standard guide to the Canadian Rockies. More complete guides exist, though they are rare and out of print. This guide presents 200 of the best climbs, eliminating overdrawn discussions of the obscure and focusing nicely on routes that have become legendary in the mountaineering world. The book itself is well made and suitable for the top of your pack.

Could not be a better guidebook.

Review Date: 2000-06-28
This is one of the most well done guidebooks I have ever seen. Some of my friends refer to the first volume of this book as "The Bible of Northwest Climbing." This one is destined for the same accolades.

The book itself is made of heavy stock paper - something that you can throw around in your car and not worry about too much. The black and white pictures are awesome and the route descriptions are well written. Hardware suggestions appear to be appropriate and the permit information looks good too.

This book describes 96 new routes and includes crag climbs (something which was not covered in the first edition). Perhaps the best thing about this book is that most of the climbs are somewhat off of the beaten track and not the most well known. Every self-respecting climber in the northwest should own both of these books - they're guaranteed to get you excited and help you pick your next trip.
