I recently began a paper dealing with a civil rights topic. While researching, I became interested in the Japanese internment of the 1940's. Although much can be learned about the internment from articles and other books, the pictures in this book are "worth 1,000 words." They photographs give a clear understanding of what life in the camps must have been like. I highly reccomend this book to history buffs, photography buffs, and those interested in civil rights issues.

Enjoy

This amazing collection of memoirs tells the stories of women in incredibly difficult situations. What is astounding is not only their survival, but their ability to maintain hope and humour. Wonderfully edited, this book is worth the hardback price. It inspires the reader to overcome hardships and gives one a glimpse into the minds of women in another place and another time.

See living with the ten Booms from one of the people hid!!!!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-20
During the Nazi occupation of Holland there was a quiet family of watchmakers, the ten Boons. When they saw the evil of the Nazi regiem they decided to do what there Christian fiath required of them to hide those who were being hunted. They hid eight people (7 I believe were Jewish) as a result when the ten
Booms were captured by the Nazi's the elderly father died, the two daughter's ended up in Buchenwald concentration camp. The eldest Betsey died at the camp, but her younger sister Corrie was released due to a clerical error. She went on to bring healing to the lives of many people, including her persecuters.

This book tells the story from the eyes of one of the young men hidden by the ten Booms. He tells life from his perspective. Out of the eight people hidden by the ten Booms only one died during the war. The Nazi's did not find them in "The Hiding Place" ( a hidden room in Corrie ten Booms closet) but after they were moved to safe houses some of them were raided. This is a tale of courage, faith, and conviction. The story of some unlikly heroes from the perspective of the people they helped. Enjoy!!!

About Rabbi Levine and Father Treacy

Review Date: 2008-05-28
Rabbi Levine and Father Treacy were friends for 25 years. They met in 1960 when Father Treacy was chosen to the Catholic representative to the award winning interfaith television program, Challenge, which had been organized by Rabbi Levine. The program aired for fourteen years. Their friendship sprang from those meetings and together they wrote, Wild Branch on the Olive Tree, a book about their relationship.

Rabbi Levine was inspired to found Camp Brotherhood and asked Father Treacy to join him. Through the Camp and other projects, they strove to reach as many people as possible with their message encouraging interfaith and interracial dialogue and understanding.

When Father Treacy was appointed to St. Patrick's Church, Rabbi Levine carved a beautiful altar for him inscribing it with ancient Christian symbols. At Rabbi Levine's death, Father Treacy committed himself to carrying on the interfaith work they had been doing together for so many years.

Ride This Train, by Hubert Ladner Jr., is a real treasure to history buffs and those wanting to know more about southern Mississippi during the early 1900's, with particular emphasis on the timber industry and Edward Hines. There are many nuggets of information in the pages of this book, making the in-depth research by the author obvious. Although an enjoyable read to anyone, the author's southern style and wit make it well received by any southern Mississippian.

Highly recommended!

Inspiring-meets girls on their level & gives them tools they need
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-09
I saw the film "Girls Rock!" in March and was blown away by the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls. Their organization gives girls the tools they need to play an instrument, start a band and play/record music. The book is written by the crew that puts on the original Camp, so their 7 years of experience is palpable. The Camp and book are much more than a rock star fantasy camp, it is a place where girls can build confidence, self-esteem and discover a means of self-expression.

The book, like the camp, addresses ideas and situations that impart real-world knowledge for the girls that other books would ignore altogether. It discusses how to promote a band, book gigs and even set-up a mic & PA system. All things that an independent band must do to get by. The "hidden" lesson here is how to be self-reliant and promote oneself, which is something these girls will need in their lives, be they musicians, doctors or a stay-at-home moms.

The camp has been so successful that it has spawned 12 other camps throughout the US and some foreign countries. Some camps also hold sessions for women, called Ladies Rock Camp. Evidently the need is there and the camps (which are always sold out) are fulfilling it. This book is a great resource for those who can't attend a camp, want to hold their own camp (what a fun summer activity!) or those who are curious about music and need a helping hand.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for girls ages 7-18 (and even ladies, too!).

Roll Call at Old Camp Floyd, Utah Territory

Reclaiming the dignity of "dilettantism"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-22
This book, laboriously and lovingly researched, written, and self-published by the author, will never have a large audience. I ordered a copy because I'm working on a biography of someone who spent some time at Camp Floyd during the so-called Mormon War of 1857-8. But anyone who has no immediate interest in Utah history or frontier life of the U.S. military in the mid-nineteenth century isn't likely to be interested in Nielson's book.

But the book itself is noteworthy for two reasons. The first is that it really is excellently researched. The "old Camp Floyd" of the title was a temporary one in which General Sidney Johnston and his army sojourned for a few months in 1858 before moving on to the permanent site of Camp Floyd, some 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. Nielson has dug up as much information about the old camp and its inhabitants as a human possibly can: muster lists of the infantry and dragoon regiments and light and heavy artillery batteries as well as information about individual members of each. He also managed to find a bit of information about the hundreds of civilian teamsters, subcontracted by the famous Russell and Waddell Freighting Company (founders of the Pony Express), who worked for the army. All in all, pretty darn impressive.

The second noteworthy feature of the book is that it's a wonderful example of what "amateur" scholars can achieve. Dilettantes, lovers of history, philosophy, art, etc. who dig deeply but not "professionally" into their subjects, were once not only respected but recognized for making great contributions. One has only to remember the amateur British naturalists of the 18th and 19th centuries, many of whom were clergymen, to appreciate this point. In our age of academic professionalism, dilettantism has become a term of reproach. People like author and historian Roger Nielson remind us that it's anything but. Books like his should be celebrated.
