This books really tells it like no other guide book. I would recommend it above Let's Go and others. It thoroughly reviews the ups and downs of hostelling in these countries. Obviously, the main attractions are the cities of Brussels and Amsterdam, and it covers the hostels there superbly, but if you want to explore the real local towns of these countries and you want to do it on a budget, this book describes the lesser known areas of these countries which you can see by staying at hostels. No other guide book lists every hostel available to the independent traveler. It's loaded with social criticism as well. And it's funny!

Forget Rick Steves, his books are for older folks. If you're young and hip, you'll enjoy these far more!

This book (and its siblings) are absolutely the BEST hostelling books out there! I use it like a bible to travel place to place. It has clear, concise guides and easy-to-use icons that allow you to quickly identify the place you're looking for. Don't travel without this book -- honestly.

This is an outstanding guide--the best I've run across--for anyone planning a Sierra vacation that won't be consisting entirely of backpacking. There is somewhat of a greater emphasis on the eastern Sierra, but the whole range is pretty thoroughly covered--in two long chapters on the eastern and western regions and four shorter chapters on the northern Sierra. (Yosemite gets split into two parts, one devoted entirely to hikes off State Road 120--the Tioga Pass road.) The book is written with real warmth, intelligence, and good humor. The trail descriptions, including directions to the trailhead, are lively, detailed and accurate, with good maps, though there's not a great deal of information on the fauna, flora, and geology. The introductory chapters, tables, and appendices are very helpful. There's a good bibliography and detailed reading recommendations for each region. I suppose some readers may quibble about hikes that were omitted, but for the areas I'm familiar with, the author made good choices.
As far as the lodgings go, all the necessary information is provided, including altitude. But while they are divided into two categories, "mountain" and "of interest" (a third category, "other," mentions any nearby town), the resorts are not rated, regrettably. The author says she's easy to please and is happy to be anywhere in the Sierra, but it would be nice if the next edition at least singled out those in particularly attractive settings.
Otherwise this a first-rate trail guide--like having an enthusiastic and knowledgeable companion at your side (or in your daypack).

This classic book is great for anyone interested in learning about, or getting into the mobile home park business. The information in it is quite dated - but the fundamentals of building a mobile home park are still similar today.

This set consists of 3 cassette tapes, which I like to listen to while driving.

The cassettes will help parents be more comfortable & capable in 6 key areas of parenting: Stopping misbehavior easily & painlessly; winning your kid's cooperation & support; opening up new lines of communication; gaining your children's respect by setting fair limits; reducing the number & severity of conflicts; & asserting your rights as a parent.

A Delightful but forgotten Gem - 500 pages of "Wealth"

"Hunting Trails: A Sportsman's Treasury", edited by Raymond R. Camp is the "Sleeper of all sleepers". Published in 1961, it is an absolute diamond mine of hunting literature circa 1870-1950 -a time when hunting literature, like many genres, was really Literature. Within its' covers are about 36 or 37 stories or chapter excerpts spread over 500 pages from the most talented, famous, and not-so-well known outdoorsmen writers in the recorded History of the sport. Even now, between 60 and 130 years after these men wrote, the names of Archibald Ruteledge, Ed Zern, Havilah Babcock, Nash Buckingham, Ray Holland, Saxton Pope, Russell Annabel, Jim Corbett, Alexander Lake and J. A. Hunter are familiar and respected among many in the ranks of today's outdoorsmen, and not just here in the USA.
These folks wrote not of "How to shoot a deer or whatever." They wrote of special experiences outdoors that transcended the mere search for, and harvest of fish or fowl - experiences that carry value for anyone. And they wrote with wit and grace, humility and respect, and knowledge. Irving S. Cobb's wonderfully playful "The Plural of Moose is Mise" is here, as is Almet Jenks' eerie Classic "The Huntsman at the Gate" and J.A. Hunter's earthy sarcasm in "Client's, Brave and Otherwise".
Many like myself grew up reading these authors and their tales over and over because they never cease to amaze and delight, and the stories that thrilled the boys with adventure now impress the men with exquisite writing styles and a level of eloquence common then but terribly scarce today. Looking at the prices above, I can honestly say you can buy a book of diamonds for $1.65, and Ray Camp's "Hunting Trails" is that book.

I read Nancy Dawe's book "I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills: Stories of Faith and Joy from Appalachia" with great interest. The author describes with striking accuracy what it is about the workcamp experience that could keep someone returning year after year.

Having been blessed enough to participate in such worktrips myself, I can attest to the absolute truth of her words. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the way worktrips can change lives. This is a must-read for anyone about to embark on their first workcamp adventure, whether it's in Appalachia or not.
