different styles of camp in the diverse and popular disaster movies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-23
Essentially an attitude depending on an educated aesthetic, detached, deconstructive, and usually bemused disposition, "camp" is a slippery concept. One person's camp can be another person's earnest literalism. Camp doesn't have a simple or comprehensive definition. Over two pages in the Introduction, Feil enumerates some attributes of camp: "...variety of coded meanings, from 'declasse' vulgarities and underground subcultures...juxtapose low, trivial pop culture sensationalism with the high and important fight for group survival...exploit serious topical concerns...self-parody, ironic pastiche, and special effects...." And throughout the book, he specifies other aspects of camp before analyzing or interpreting certain horror movies to show how they participate in camp, sometimes unintentionally. Starting with the campy disaster movies of the 1970s, the book moves right up to date in dealing with the changed perspective on disaster, threat, and survival after 9/11 and some recent, tentative, ambiguous gambits to reinvigorate camp. As expected in any book on camp. Feil makes regular references to Susan Sontag's perceptive, seminal essays on camp in the mid 1960s. Feil greatly elaborates on Sontag's central, stimulating insights with his "hybrid" method involving "historical reaction analysis, genre criticism, queer studies, and historical poetics" applied to many disaster movies and the reviews, notices, promotional materials, and marketing surrounding them. Feil is with the Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College.

Terrific book if you want to know where to camp with kids

My daughters turned 6 & 8 this summer and we decided it was time to head out and see some of the great outdoors. I chose this book because I needed 'Easy Camping' given my daughters' ages. I'd also read another book by Tom Stienstra and enjoyed his style of writing.

Anyway, we've tried 2 of Tom's recommended excursions and they've both been absolutely amazing (Castle Rock Trail Camp and Pan Toll at Mt. Tamalpais). Although the book is called `Easy Camping' that doesn't mean camping in a parking lot! My challenge was finding places that were a far enough walk that you'd feel like you were "out there" whilst not being too far for young children (my daughters can't hike more than about 3 miles with their backpacks). This book is right on the money in this respect.

I don't know about you but I often feel let down when I read guide books full of glowing recommendations only to visit a place and find it ain't that great. This doesn't happen with Tom Stienstra, what he describes is what you get. The book is well laid out with just the right balance of descriptive writing and details for planning a trip. I do recommend you call the sites before you visit however because his info on reservations, pricing, etc. is a little out of date.

Owning this book is like having your own personal guide to the best that Northern California has to offer for weekend/overnight camping with young children. Do yourself a favor - get this book and get out this weekend

Echoes of Elkol is meticulously researched and masterfully written to the extent that the narrative reads like a good novel. Recorded herein are the voices of the souls who fed the forges that built this country; all aficionados of American history should read this book.

Modern Women, Modern Lives
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-28
I really connected to both Camp David Diaries, not only did it appeal to the voyerism so popular on television today but it revealed a more intimate life of the not so private lives of these important women. These diaries, though fictional, have a reality to them that you can't sense in autobigraphical works. It also allows younger women like myself exposure to more positive role models. You come to understand the good and the bad behind such a powerfull position in our government and that it is not all it's cracked up to be. If you have any interest in women who have made strides in our country and how they faced that adversity this is the series of works to commit to reading. You'll love the back and forth commentary(gossip) of all the First Ladies as they add their two cents about certain people and certain affairs.

An unvarnished, candid, accurate portrayal

Compiled by Gerald H. Robinson, Elusive Truth: Four Photographers At Manzanar is a strikingly impressive collection of historical photographs taken of the Manzanar relocation camp, one of several set up by the United States government in 1942 when it forcibly imprisoned a population of 110,000 Japanese-Americans citizens and Japanese residents for three years. The poignant text combines with meaningful images of daily life as it features the photographic talents of Ansel Adams, Clem Albers, Dorothea Lange, and Toyo Miyatake, and presents an unvarnished, candid, accurate portrayal. Highly recommended.

My kids beg for these workbooks!

Review Date: 2000-06-22
My oldest daughter completed 2,3,and 4 and was terribly disappointed that it ended there. She is not a child who is crazy about school so to find educational material she begged for was exciting. My middle daughter did 2 last year and asked the first day school was out this summer, "Can I do Camp Step Ahead again?" I am now attemping to get a set of these to store back for my youngest child. Every day has a subject theme, such as math, social studies, language arts, reading, etc. You have a word of the day, FUN quick activity, an extra "eager beaver activity", and then a joke of the day to finish off. It has stickers to use and a ton of extra fun family activities listed in the back of the book. It also includes a list of age appropriate recommended books for reading that are divided into interest groups(fiction, non-fiction) There is also a pull out activity poster. These books are fantastic, one your kid will actually use!
