I started reading this book one shabbos and had trouble putting it down to daven. After shabbos I didn't put it down until I finished on Sunday. For any serious Jew this book will be absolutely inspirational, for others it is very interesting. You read about Meyer Birnbaum's life in such a way that you can picture yourself there. Learn what it was like to grow up as an Orthodox Jew in a poor family early in the Century. He was there for the near beginnings of the Agudath movement in the U.S. He was an officer in the U.S. Army (a combat soldier no less) who managed to remain observant under some very difficult experiences, not all due to combat- sometimes fellow soldiers weren't all that understanding, picture wearing tifillin to daven in the morning during basic training (anyone who was in the military should be in cold sweats at that picture). He helped with concentration camp survivors and helped get many to Israel and he moved to Israel in time to see the birth of a nation. This is an inspirational story, with doses of intrigue and suspense. One of the best books I ever read.

This is a really helpful book - very much worth the $21.75 price.

The physical book itself is unimpressive (wire bound, etc), but it's what inside that really counts here. We use many of the helpful suggestions regularly. We came across it somewhat by accident, but we're sure glad we did.

There is a lot covered here. In fact, most everything you need to run, or improve a Summer Program....or any non-profit or Child Care program. I think it's all in the way you use it's many helpful hints - those that just read it and toss it aside will gain nothing but $21.75 less in their bank account. But, use the many suggestions (we love the helpful hints inside!) for improvement and you'll have a better program as a result.

If I knew what was in here before we bought it, we'd have paid $121.75 for it.

Ms. Stanco, if you ever read these comments - thank you from all of us at Rio Rancho Public Schools outside of Albuquerque!

Best Introduction to Edith Stein

Review Date: 2003-04-07
This is the best indroduction to Edith Stein. It is vividly written and moves quickly. The book underscores the strength of this contemporary woman who, facing great challenges, had to think through and stand firm in her beliefs. In Cavnar's book, the central drama of Edith Stein's life is her conversion to Catholicism. This book does what a well-written saint's biography should do--namely, challenge the reader to respond to God's call with greater intensity.

Good book!

This book highlights the life of a woman who should be better known to all of us. Her story is one of courage and conviction, first in her struggle to define her faith and to situate spirituality within philosophy, and later in her struggle against Nazi persecution. The author skillfully interweaves biography, histoy, and spirituality, all the while painting a very human and intimate picture of this incredible woman.

Includes a politically correct bias

Author Cynthia Cavnar condenses the life of Edith Stein into the most readable book yet. Information is contained herein which was not mentioned in longer biographies. However, in the few pages in which Cavnar discusses Pope Pius XI and XII and their roles in the fight against Nazism, Cavnar misses the mark, downplaying Mit Brenneder Sorge (On the Church and the German Reich) by Pius XI and ignoring altogether Pius XII's Summi Pontificatus (On the Unity of Human Society) published in 1939. I would have to recommend "Edith Stein: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross" by Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda over Ms. Cavnar's title although the former book is a little less readable.

Objective In-Depth Biography Brings Saint to Life

Review Date: 2002-12-10
Cavnar outlines the context of the life of St. Edith Stein so that the reader may appreciate the martyr's life as she lived it. Yet the author does not cling to the technicalities so as to give a boring recitation of St. Edith's accomplishments and failures. Rather, Cavnar brings the deepest passions of St. Edith to life: her love of philosophy, her love of teaching, her love of helping others, and most importantly, her love of God. The narrative moves swiftly so that the reader is caught up in the excitements and disappointments in St. Edith's life from World War I, her academic work and her relationships with her family members. This book is an excellent inspirational biography that presents a very real woman who was very dedicated to God.

Never Surrender is the most intense WW II book I have ever read. The fact that it was written in the first person by an actual survivor of the battles and the POW camps really brought the story home for me. The main character in the true life adventure is also the book's author. Sometimes he is on the periphery of battles and at other times he is right in the middle of it!

I was very surprised by the humor and wit of the POW survivor, Earl Anderson, who wrote the book. Many times, I found myself laughing at a hilarious anecdote told by the writer a moment before I was holding my breath as the writer's life was in danger. The writer uses the interesting technique of telling the story as if it is happening in the present. This brings an immediacy to the story that is not present in other WW II books. I was shocked and fascinated as the story unfolded. The writer's personal experiences reveal truths about the Philippines battles and the Japanese POW camps that I never knew about before. This book is an entertaining adventure story as well as a harrowing tale of survival. I would recommend this book to anyone and not just to those people interested in WW II.

I love Camp Confidential! This one is about Jenna who loves to pull pranks. She promised she would not pull any more but once she meets a big prankster she gets the best prank idea to pull on the Color War: Operation Drowned Rat. But she's afraid she'll lose her friends' trust for her though, so she throws it away. Meanwhile, she has a broken leg and has to just coach her Color War team. This makes sports superstar Jenna so mad!
Anyway just read it! I also hope that this gives you an idea of what the next book is about for the other members of the non-existing Camp Confidential Fan Club!!

Great romance between secondary characters

The story is nice, but I thought the romance between the secondary characters, Alan and Opal, overshadowed it. The fact that this secondary romance was so good is why I give this book 4 stars!

What a beautiful story!

This story is truly lovely. The heroine, Millicent Hayes, is 29 and has been caring for her brother Alan ever since he was crippled ten years ago. She lives an isolated life, interacting with few outside her close-knit family.

Then Jonathan Lawrence and his daughter Betsy move in next door. While relations between the neighbors are strained at first, Millicent and her brother Alan become close to the widower and his daughter.

This story really shines because of the characterizations. Millicent and Jonathan are likable and the secondary characters (Betsy, Alan, Opal, Oradelle and the various family memebrs) are well-drawn and are people that any reader would want to interact with within the bounds of this story. This book and Heirloom are two of my favorites by this author. I just wish Candace Camp still wrote like this!

This book actually got me into the love novels. I used to call them the fabio books. I used to make fun of my aunt for reading these types of books. If you want to start with the love novel books this is a really good book. Rosewood has a good story line. Its filled with love, ..., jealousy. I really liked this book. They used details to describe the man and women. And this book shows that love making is not just ...intercourse but something secret and intimate. Even though I am very young to read these types of love books, I dont take the love making as very bad thing to read. I apreciate all the writers whether love story or other types of story's. Rosewood it is funny, lovable and very enjoyable. I really recomend this book. I give it 5 thumbs up if i had 5 thumbs.

If you are not lucky enough to be able to sit at Ollie's feet and listen to her in person this is the next best thing... the book "sounds" like her... it is written as though she is speaking directly to you.... so it will throw many readers at first until you get used to the voice.... this is as close as you can get to her voice without voice recordings :) This is a wonderful way of speaking that has come about from mixing traditional lakota dialects with the english language to create a new dialect that is truely unique.

The book itself is a treasure of information that gives you a personal perspective of life in this area growing up during a time when this nation was going through major changes. Ollie gives you a vivid account of daily life, life that has all but disappeared, sprinkled with wisdom and facts you won't get out of main stream textbooks or history books. This is a wonderful window into another culture and belief system that you should not miss!

This book is for everyone, from young to old, from curious to students, those who have an interest in history, culture, and their fellow humans... this has something that speaks to everyone and gives you so much more when you are finished with it .... you won't regret this purchase! Donate a copy to your local library or school!

In this wonderful book, Ollie Napesni tells her own story (through the meticulous work of her devoted recorder and editor, Dianna Torson). Born to Lakota parents on the plains of South Dakota in 1917, Ollie straddles and unites two American cultures. Through her, they fuse and participate energetically in the travails and triumphs of the century. What emerges is a great American spirit that comes sailing out of the pages in Ollie's own salty, vivacious, mid-western voice. If you have any interest in American Indian affairs - or even if you don't - you shouldn't miss this book. You won't put it down without a lump in your throat and a smile in your heart.

Once you get into the syntax of Ms. Napesni's voice, you love it. She is a Lakota speaker and she thinks in Lakota because it is her first language. Highly fluent in English she is able to bring to the reader a sense of being Lakota. The book demonstrates to readers how one must be flexible in order to live in two completely different cultures. The book itself is a joy, easy to hold and easy to read. For fastest service it is best ordered straight from www.trafford.com.

Reading Ollie Napesni's autobiographical account as a Lakota Sioux Native American was a pure pleasure. Finally we have female insight what it was like growing up in Native America from the early 1920's. Ms. Napesni's account to her editor, transcriber, Dianna Torson, has Ollie's voice in traditional Lakota story telling style. Ollie's voice rings through and we listen to her tell "HerStory". Ms. Torson's ability to edit without loosing the traditional Lakota oratory style is remarkable. Even through a few instances of time wandering, Ollie's story won't let you go. You follow her recollections and look for her bits of wisdom. We learn about honor, dignity, humbleness, family values and strength. We discover women, men and children in Native American communities who were centered in family and Lakota Native American traditions.

Ms Napesni has offered to those of us who yearn for simplicity, commonality, spirituality and peace a world view and a life that attained those qualities.

One walks away after reading this book with a feeling of being a better person and a bit of a longing to pack up your belongings and to rendezvous with family and friends, taking the time to appreciate life and it's giver.
