We are generally car campers, but do venture into more adventurous terrain from time to time. I picked up this book on a whim and think its one of the best of its kind that I've ever read. Its realistic as to what is possible to bring with you and the time you are willing to spend, yet her recipes and techniques are still focused on getting the most flavor and enjoyment for your efforts. I enjoy reading through it from time to time just for fun.

Superb handbook for the outdoor enthusiast who is packing light!!

This is a superb compact cookbook for those who enjoy the outdoors and like eating home cooked eat'en while enoying the great outdoors! Well organized with easy read rating icons, this book lets you know at a glance what and how much preparation is needed to cook and serve each dish, the best and alternate cooking techniques, required grocery store ingredients, or baked at home recommended instructions. I enjoyed this book because we camp alot and I'm always looking for ways to cut down on our baggage, clutter, and weight. This book was worth it's weight in gold! It benchmarks most of it's recipes on dried foods or powder substitutes. It suggests premeasuring and placing in marked baggies ingredients to meal preparation. Weight cutting measures, such as, using powdered milk, powdered eggs, and dried ingredients can dramatically size down the amount of uncut or bulk items! This cookbook would be best matched with someone who owned and master a dehydrater, altough, it isn't necessary for most of the recipes. One can pick and choose the ingredients to dry and supplement based on their space or carrying capacity and purchase those ingredients at a grocery store near your camping location. The recipes included are basics and should give you enough to work with to possibly create your own renditions! Included are rehydrating techniques to use at camp for those lightweight dried ingredients to bring them back to life at the campsite. This book is compact, it does have a few pictures, some color, but small sized to accommodate the hand size of this must have trail and camping cookbook.Don't miss these selected picks I've found to be worth the purchase, Campfire Biscuits, Upside-Down Sloppy Joes, Grits With Egg And Cheese!

RECOMMENDED!

If I could only have one book on camp cooking, this is it

I read many reviews and purchased a couple of books on camp cooking, and if I were only allowed to have one, this is it.

When looking for books on camp cooking, one must align their type of camping with that addressed by the book. This book is subtitled CAMP COOKING FOR CANOEISTS, HIKERS AND ANGLERS. The rather varying needs of these types of people are well addressed. The canoeist, or someone camping by car, will carry more pots and pans than the hiker, but with over 150 recipes, all can find something. My wife and I currently only camp by car, but hope to start camping by kayak, and this book was right down our alley.

The recipes are good and are rather "normal" foods like you'd have at home. (Some camping books promote some pretty strange things.) The emphasis is on preparation at home, using ingredients that are light, easily packed and travel well. Most of the recipes require a little more preparation time and are more sophisticated than what you'll find in other books. (If you want quickly prepared, but plainer (stranger?), meals for hiking, see BACKCOUNTRY COOKING by Miller.) The opening chapters discuss the selection of camping food ingredients, and includes a substantial description of home drying which rivals the information in books devoted exclusively to the subject such as HOW TO DRY FOODS. You will probably find having a home dehydrator will be beneficial to get the most from this book. The author describes selection of camp cooking equipment such as stoves, cookware and eating utensils, and briefly discusses camping over an open fire, or with some of the camp ovens available, although most of the recipes are for a camping stove. Then there are ten chapters of recipes, such as "Soups," "Breakfast," "Main Dishes," and "Beverages." Each recipe is marked by icons indicating how many pots are needed, if the ingredients are readily available at grocery stores, whether it requires home drying, or if it requires canned foods. Clear black and white photos are interspersed throughout the book, and there are two sections of color photographs.

I found the first part of the book to be very valuable on its own. By knowing how to prepare ingredients for camping, such as clarifying butter, you can adopt your own recipes or dry mix foods for camping. I tried the upside-down sloppy Joes and beef stroganoff, and later, my wife informed me that mixes were available in the grocery store, so rather than collect all of the ingredients called for in the recipe, I adopted the prepared mixes. Unlike some other camp cook books that rely heavily on freeze dried foods sitting in some general store in the wilds of Colorado somewhere (or require mail ordering), most ingredients are available at the average supermarket (although despite seemingly having EVERYTHING by Knorr, my local Publix does not seem to have the mushroom SAUCE [not GRAVY] called for by the beef stroganoff recipe!).

If you only want one book on camp cooking, want to be rewarded with a satisfying meal, and don't mind a little preparation in camp, this is the book to have. It will take many years of camping to try all of the recipes in this book that interest us.

I started wilderness camping a few years ago and I have used this book for wonderfully tasty meals. When weight and space are an important consideration (portaging can be ugly) this book makes me look like a pro. Dehydrated store-bought food can be expensive and disappointing in taste and portions. This book has a simple approach to everything. I like the ease of preparation rating system, suggestions for packing the recipe as well as preparation in camp. Pictures make it easy even for a novice. I usually make a copy of the recipe and put it in the baggie with all the ingredients for the recipe. I like this book well enough to give it as a gift to our friends.

A must for anyone who likes to camp.

After a lot of research, I bought this book. From first glance, I knew I had the right book. Recipes run the gamut from simple and tasty Maccaroni and Cheese to more complex Sweet and Sour Chicken. The book contains recipes for breakfast, breads, soups, main & side dishes, fish & game, international, beverages, and desserts & snacks. One chapter covers equipment and camp cooking techniques. At just over 200 pages, it's chocked full of great camp cooking ideas.

Many of the recipes call for dried foods, some of which may be hard to find in smaller towns. However, there is a chapter that explains the basics of home food drying.

This is a great resource for anyone who enjoys camping. Whether you camp in a backwoods primitive camp or a more modern setting, you're certain to find plenty to enjoy from this cookbook!

Superb confidence in the power of the word and story

Review Date: 2000-08-30
This volume contains poems and prose-poems that are autobiographical (I assume), biographic and mythical. In the biographical series of interned Japanese, the poets' confidence that the story itself is sufficient creates very effective poems - simple language, well chosen details - and a person is drawn. In the mythic poems she uses more "poetic" language and imagery while retaining a highly effective simplicity. In the biographic poems, the segment that includes prose poems, there is a different sensibility, one drawn from hunting, from social isolation as the child of a war bride - a bride who married the enemy.

The most impressive feature of this volume is the confidence of the poet - the trusting of her skill, the power of story, the power of words. While much of the message of the poetry regards the policy of internment, the destruction of Hiroshima/Nagasaki, racial prejudice, childhood embarrassment of parents that are "other" etc., there is no trace of the diadactic in the poems. The poems simply sing.

There is much to be said about poetry with language so finely chiseled it cuts through the page. Roripaugh's words are a feast for the senses. Myth, history, culture, and memory are but a few of the rich ingredients in this dazzling book of poems. Definitely one of the best books of poetry I've read this year.

Camp Nowhere by:R.l Stine is a very good and scary book. I will give you a short summary of this book to show you how scary and good it is. The book Camp Nowhere is about a boy named Russell who goes to summer camp. During the summer camp, the campers talk about different legends. One of the legends was about a river called "Forbidden Falls" which was close to the summer camp. This legend will scare you to death. Well you see, several years ago, 5 kids went in a canoe to the forbidden falls and they all vanished in thin air.

If you want to find out why did the kids disappear?, What happend to the river?, Was the river haunted? and etc, I suggest you to read the book. I say that this Nightmare room book is the best that R.l Stine has written, but who knows there might be a better one coming up. READ IT!!

The book no.9 in the Nightmare Room Series is by far the best I have ever read. It has lots of chills and scares, it is very eerie, freaky and has a great plot and great charachters and great descriptions. It should be a bestseller. And it doesn't matter the age because this book is gonna make you sleep with the lights on for a very long time. Russel, David, Charlotte, Marty and Erin are the most important charachters in the book. They are senior campers in Camp Hawkwood, and senior campers in Camp Hawkwood go over forbidden falls. Counselors tell a story about five kids who went over the falls and were never seen again. The senior campers take the risk and go over forbidden falls and when they realize that it was all a joke they decide to play a joke on the counselor, Ramon. The joke works but it messes up the kids plans because they lose ramon and the canoes. Looking for their camp they find another camp called Camp Evergreen. But there is something wrong with that camp and that kid Drew what was he talking about when he said that he was going to tell the kids the truth about the camp?

This is one of the best books that I have ever bought and I encourage you to buy them too.

Once I started reading this book it was hard to stop. Two boys were pretending to play war on a road where one was Canadian and the other was a Nazi. They were trying to go home but get stopped by a Jeep. That is how they find the spy camp. They have no idea what is going on in the camp, so they try to find out more and get caught. They get taken to the leader. They think they're in a lot of trouble but end up helping the camp do a few "jobs." They end up finding out one of they're friends is a Nazi spy. They get kidnapped by him and interrogated. Then the other Nazi spies come in and hit them. They end up telling them everything. I can't tell you anymore because then that would ruin the book, and you would probably get mad at me. It is a great book if you like action mysteries. This book has great entertainment and excitement. The details in Camp X are very specific, so you can almost feel what is going on in the story. This book is full of great action. I'd give this book five stars.

Camp X is a great book! Two kids stumble upon a Canadian spy camp and are brought into the service. They are good at infiltrating an allied munitions plant as a test. Then they infiltrate their own camp! One of their friends turns out to be a Nazi spy. I am not going tell any more because that would spoil the book!

Camo X was very interesting from the begining of the book. I never wanted to put the book down. When I was reading this book I really felt like I was one of the charachters, and was watching them. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this book a 10 for it's over all entertainment, detail and excitement. I think this is a very good book.

While wearing the guise of a well paced spy thriller, "Circle Around the Sun" delivers a fascinating social and political history of our current terrorist dilemma, as seen through the eyes of a mature, modern, multicultural woman and her extended family. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the book for me was the carefully crafted picture of Middle Eastern/Muslim culture and its interactions and conflicts with the west. The emotional depth and detail given on the subject is not usually available in modern fiction, and is certainly more compelling than any documentary I have seen since 9-11.

The book spans the era from circa 1968 to the present, which makes it a must read for any baby boomers like myself that are still paying attention to the world around them. With another book in this series ("The Isis Project") apparently on the way, we can look forward to a continuing education and another fun read.

Circle Around the Sun is a fast paced adventure that takes place in England, Germany, the Middle East and the USA. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is that the hero is not a typical James Bond / Jack Ryan character but rather Emily Cowen, a woman whose heritage and experience places her in the center of Middle Eastern conflict. Ms. Cowen is a fascinating character who does not always make the safest choices in life, but manages to face the outcome of her decisions and the events that shape her life with courage and intelligence. Ms. Johnson brings an incredible sense of realism to the story, but manages to do so without distracting from the intensity and pace of the action. Highly recommended.

Avery is a kid who just can't seem to get things right at Cowboy Camp. Or can he? In Cowboy Camp, it's Avery to the rescue when he and the other kids discover that it's not only okay to be yourself -- it's what being a true cowboy is all about. I read this one to a class of kindergarteners last week and they loved it. It's going up on my shelf right next to my Tacky books. Cute, clever and lots of fun!

Avery wants to be a cowboy, but when he arrives at Cowboy Camp, he takes one look at the other campers and knows he doesn't have what it takes. Who ever heard of a cowboy named Avery who doesn't like grits and beans, is allergic to horses and gets rope burn?

When an unexpected visitor arrives at camp, Avery uses the most important cowboy skill of all and proves he's an honest-to-goodness cowboy.

Tammi Sauer pens a clever cowboy story that will leave kids laughing out loud and begging to attend Cowboy Camp this summer. Mike Reed's illustrations are incredible--a perfect fit for this rootin' tootin' cowboy adventure.

Look for this one to win some awards. VERY highly recommended!

It's always fun to tell ghost stories around a fire late at night, but coming up with something original isn't always easy. Adams has offerred us a collection of truly original tales that make for a spooky evening.

Adams has a knack for the original while he mixes small-town nastalgia with evil lurking just around the corner, or on the radio, or in the pond, or in the woods.

I'd love to read a full length effort from JA in the future.

Perfect Book For Camping or Halloween Parties

This book is perfect to tell around campfires or to kids on hayrides during Halloween parties, if you live in the country like us. The stories are short enough to remember the main details for retelling, yet long enough when you read them by yourself they seem to really be happening. Also, there are no dumb endings or forced scenes where people do unrealistic things. Everything seems like something logical you would do if the story was really ahppening. They all happen at Halloween or In October, and all around campgrounds or camp fires at some point in the story. They are all new too. So many other campfire story books we bought were retellings of old stories or just dumb stories. These are brand new, so the kids will really be shcoked by the endings. There are hayrides, monsters, spooky scenes in the deserted woods, and lonely campsites on farms. Onse story is about a family all alone, in the deep woods of Maine, and what happens to them when an unknown "thing" intrudes on their cook out. Having been to Maine, the feeling lonelinees and isolation in the book matches the real thing. Our friends from the big city (Manchester) think being out in the middle of nowhere is terifying. We think dark city streets are scary, so I bet city folk like our friends would be very scared by this book. It is fine for teens, while there is death and fright, no cusssing or sex (aside from one kissing scene, no nudity you could say.). Many of these characters reminded me of being in school and all the bon fires we would have, which sooner or later, led to telling ghost stories.

Darlene Diebler's story of her faith in the jungle during WWII is an even greater tribute to the faithfulness of God. Despite all of the persecution, trials, deprivation, and personal grief that Darlene encountered during the war, she tells how God supplied her with the strength to endure, often supplying her material needs, as well. The answers to prayer, as described in this book, are inspiring, absolutely AWESOME accounts!

I have bought several copies of this book to give to friends, and I will always keep one copy to encourage myself to keep going when times are difficult. This is a book that puts everything in perspective. God is faithful: this is the precious message that shines from every page! Diebler has blessed us by relating her story: a young bride who toughed it out as a prisoner of the Japanese by continuing to trust the One who was ACTUALLY in control!

This book has had a great impact on me. If you are interested in knowing what it means to truly trust God, in spite of personal loss, read this. Darlene Diebler Rose has greatly encouraged me as a Christian. Sometimes Christians are asked to endure great suffering and often without an explanation as to why the suffering is being allowed by a loving Father. She was willing to surrender everything to the Lord and because of her
faithfulness, her victory has been made known to many people. As a result, she has ministered to someone like me who really needed to gain a better understanding of what discipleship involves. Thank you, Darlene, wherever you are!!

Have browsed a number of books that say they cover this information, but none do it as well as this one. Everything you need is there. A wonderful resourse for anyone camping/RVing in Florida.

I was pleased to find this book which gives quite a bit more detail than the huge regional campground books (Woodall's, etc.). Looking up some campgrounds that we'd already tried (Lazy Days and St. Augustine), I could see it captures the character of the place and lets you know what to expect.
This will be invaluable for us as we explore Florida with our motorhome.

Please be sure to look and ask for the fourth edition of the book, released in fall 2007. The book has been completely updated and revised. Look for the blue cover and the Moon imprint!

All best,

As indicated by other reviewers, the Foghorn series of campground guides is not without flaws. Even so, we know of no directories which do a better job of addressing campground aesthetics than these wonderful guides. In our experience, the look and feel of a campground is often the single greatest factor influencing the quality of a camping experience . . . and the factor totally ignored by nearly all other campground guides.

There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. The Foghorn guides actually give you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.

Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.

Are the Foghorn Outdoors guides the only ones we use? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.

When Andrew Herman and Tyler Herman go to Fright Camp, there were already scares when they were in the bus. When they were really at Fright Camp, Andrew was excited because there were places like "The Cavern of no Return, The Quicksand Pit...". When they meet Alonso, Alonso volunteered Chris to be volunteer from something. R.B Farraday showed, I Forgot to tell you Andrew and Tyler and all those in the camp love him. R.B. Farraday thought something was strangw, because what happened to Chris was the same thing that happened in Revenge of Dr. Cruel. When they were going to ride Spin and Scream, there were also horrors. When Andrew was taking a bath, he saw something underneath and he saw Jack's face pulling Andrew underwater. After that, when they were in they're bunks, somebody was spying on them. They knew it was Alonso. When dinner came, Alonso announced that there was accidentally added some poison on the food. Quickly, Chris and Jack can feel themselves fainting. Is this for real?. After that when Jack woke, he decided to call his mom. When morning came, Jack's mother was in the quicksand pit!. When Alonso let Andrew in the The Mine of Souls, he heard cheefrul voices and clappings. There stood R.B. Farraday and some tall mens clapping for him. When Andrew knew they were tricked he was mad. Alonso, was just Farraday's brother, Ned. The part who played Duffy was just Max. And the part who played Jack's mom was only Margo. When Andrew's brother and Merideth's sister was missing, they decided to in the Cavern because they heard voices. On the ending they found Tyler and Elizabeth but they were stranded with them including R.B. Farraday and Ned!

One of the best!!!
