I highly recommend it!

Written especially for teachers

Teacher and author Jonathan Erwin presents The Classroom Of Choice, an approach to classroom education heavily grounded in the five basic human needs of William Glasser's "Choice Theory": survival and security, love and belonging, power through cooperation and competency, freedom, and fun. Adapting teaching methods to attend to these needs allows teachers to customize their classroom environment and groom students to motivate and monitor themselves. An open-minded approach that blends idealism with practical requirements, and an excellent supplementary tour of tips, tricks, techniques and methodologies to enhance instruction, written especially for teachers but also applicable to parents.

This is as good if not better than being in a classroom with the author. The information is handled in a very logical and sequential manner. The examples clarify learning. I have purchased several copies for my friends.

a sophisticated conceptualization of the medical task
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-25
This compilation of essays previously published in JAMA is a brilliant sophisticated, clinically based intimate account of how modern medical knowledge, epidemiology and logic can be applied to the practice of medicine. It is clear and very readable. It has many insights, some of which are at first counterintuitive. It provides an unsurpassed answers to both the commercial "cost benefit analyses" of market managed care and the idiosyncratic academic/fee for service biases of traditional American medicine. A must read for any physician who wants a sophisticated approach to his/her vocation. Jeoffry B. Gordon, MD, MPH paradocs2@home.com

Suggestions for bridging the cultural divide

Compiled and edited by Belinda Williams, and now in an updated and revised second edition, Closing The Achievement Gap: A Vision For Changing Beliefs And Practices focuses on the necessity for educators becoming more sensitive to the worldviews of disadvantaged students and incorporating this awareness into their curriculums and teaching strategies for such students. The contributors persuasively argue that teachers, principals, and policy makers must learn about cultural perceptions of human development; apply this knowledge to professional development and comprehensive reform; and then aligning political and educational policies accordingly. Very strongly recommended reading for the frontline classroom teacher, Closing The Achievement Gap also offers specific suggestions for bridging the cultural divide through vocabulary instructions, opportunity-to-learn strategies, and school-level organizational reform.

A "must-have" for any gym teacher

Coaching Soccer: 6 To 10 Year Olds by experienced soccer coach Giuliano Rusca is a useful and "user friendly" guide to building motor and teamwork skills in young people. Yet the involving text quickly gives way to pages and pages of soccer play diagrams, sample drills for lessons, and tables to record athlete's performance. Simply put, Coaching Soccer is a "must-have" for any gym teacher, team coach or volunteer parent charged with the responsibility of teaching this increasingly popular team sport to young people.

These should be a start for young kids

Great book for coaching young players. Simple games and drills for serious work and development of young players. There is no boring drills that go on and on. Effective. Also charts for evaluation of every workout etc.

McShane is the real deal when it comes to coaching soccer. I highly recommend his instructional and informative book. I do wish that he sought out the mighty Arsenal Football Club as a resource. I'm sure Thierry Henry could have added some poignant insights on the game. My only other complaint regarded the fact that there were no chapters on soccer video games. I feel that these games not only serve to develop hand-eye coordination and lot of good material for "smack-talk," but also instill confidence (albeit false) in one's outdoor performance. Nonetheless, this is a fine read for the lads. Go STA! Go Arsenal! and GO SOX!

Mr. McShane has produced a work that will, I think, have a profound effect on how the elite youth players in the United States are trained. He has done intensive research on how the most successful player development systems operate and has written a book designed to clearly define the essential elements of their training. If you have involvment with the development of potentionaly elite players, you should read this book.

Cobi Jones is the soccer player kids watch in the United States. He is their hero. This book will help the beginner through advanced increase their skills. The format of the book is very user friendly. First, the reader learns some valuable information about Cobi Jones, then he takes you step by step through all of soccer's skills. Mr. Jones goes over the rules of the game, then stresses the need for warming up and details some exercises to do just that. He also emphasizes fair play. Each chapter then discusses and demonstrates a soccer skill. Mr. Jones offers excellent graphics appropriate for kids, and gives tips to enhance the skill. To complete each chapter skill, the champion provides games for perfect practice. This book is a very personalized approach to soccer instruction derived from a book. A great gift and "personal coach" for soccer enthusiasts! An autographed practice ball is included!

Harmon-Jones & Mills thoroughly take the reader from the beginning of CDT through those major revisions that have received empirical support all the way to today. The sampling of authors is wonderful and Harmon-Jones doesn't push his revision and instead he & Mills fairly offer all of the relevant alternatives. Importantly, Mills is particularly respectful to Festinger which is often missing in much of the newer writing. Get this one- it's a steal & you'll find all that you need re CDT within! My dissertation is on CDT and this is one source that I continually return to.

The book provides the most up-to-date consideration of Leon Festinger's Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957). It contains chapters written by an international group of well-established scientists who study cognitive dissonance processes. It is a must read for anyone interested in the relationship between cognition, emotion, attitudes, and behavior.

Cognitive Methods And Their Application To Clinical Research is a college, graduate studies and professional-level text collecting the writings of expert psychologists concerning the discoveries and applications of cognitive psychology, particularly in the past 20 years. Clinical psychologists often have little background in cognitive psychology, and cognitive psychologists frequently have sparse training in conducting research with special populations; Cognitive Methods And Their Application To Clinical Research seeks to bridge the gap by providing the necessary background reference to discuss each eassy topic, in an ambitious anthology that strives to further promote both individual and collective professional understandings of psychology as a whole. Highly recommended especially for professional and academic library psychology reference and supplemental studies shelves.

Humanitarian Implications of Enlightened Capitalism

Review Date: 2001-12-12
As they explain, Allen and Jarman identify and then explain "the basis for conviction by believers in the process of collaborative development in manufacturing R&D that we are adding value to a system that will help to sustain and ensure the stability and progression of the economic engines that provide the foundation for improving society." Note the correlation the authors draw between increased manufacturing productivity and social benefit. They organize their material within five Parts: Collaboration, Ingredients of Collaboration, Starting a Collaborative program, Tools for Collaboration, Making Collaboration Work, and Tomorrow's Business Culture -- Collaboration. They then provide ten appendices which range from "Printed Wiring Board (PWB) program" to "Examples of Mr. Allen's Networks with Major End Users."

Here in a single source is about all that most decision-makers need to know when designing and then implementing a program by which to establish and then sustain collaboration with participation, as wide and deep as possible, by everyone directly and even indirectly associated with a given organization. Allen and Jarman also suggest metrics by which to evaluate the progress of such collaboration. Time and again, we are reminded that "you can't manage what you can't measure." I agree. But first there must be a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective program, one which is appropriate to the specific needs and objectives of the organization for which it has been formulated.

With regard to the future of collaboration, Allen and Jarman explain that their objective has been to "expand the amount of collaborative opportunity to people at all levels worldwide, to give them an easy means to learn, to escape the shackles of their culture, their nationalism, prejudice, and interface with the world as members of the human race." In that event, they will have "a positive appreciation for the culture and nation they belong to, yet foster better understanding as to how the world is integrated into one vast socioeconomic-political system." Only then can they "better understand their role in the world and how they can play a constructive part in ensuring that the future is better for their families." Whatever a given organization may manufacture, it also has the opportunity to create with all other organizations what the authors view as an infrastructure of spiritual values by which to nourish all of humanity.
