A gem of practicality

Few books offer so many practical rewards for lawyers (indeed for anyone who uses Acrobat). Cleanly written and full of screenshots to aid you, this is a one stop shop for "everything Acrobat" a lawyer could possibly want to know. David Masters is renowned as a lawyer/expert who speaks nationwide about the use of Adobe Acrobat in law firms. If you get the chance to hear him speak, you'll thoroughly enjoy him in person, but the book is a reference tool that you'll go back to time and again. Most lawyers who read this book are shocked by the many things that Acrobat can do - and they practice better, more efficiently and more securely as a result. This book should be in every lawyer's library.

Tells You Just What You Need to Know

More and more courts are allowing, if not requiring, that documents of all type be presented in electronic format either in addition to or in some cases instead of on paper. There are unquestionably a lot of lawyers who will assign the task of producing the electronic document to a secretary. But this is kind of like having a lawyer these days who can't use a PC - there probably are some, but they are getting fewer and fewer.

This slim document, now in its second edition is aimed to enable lawyers (or their secretaries) to produce the .pdf documents desired by the court. It does not go into all the details of what Adobe Acrobat can do, that would take a thousand pages or so. It is not a book intended for the teckie who lives, breathes, and eats computers. It tells the lawyer what he needs to know to meet the courts requirements. At this it does a great job.

I really needed this book! It focuses on the functions of Adobe Acrobat 6 that lawyers need to use. Explanations are clear, illustrations are helpful.

These are skills that a lawyer could choose to "leave to the support staff." The lawyers who do that are also the ones who can be productive and profitable practitioners in the 21st Century without touching a computer keyboard. (I assume there are a few of them somewhere.)

The rest of us need to know how to create, manipulate and use documents in the PDF format. This book tells us how. Those who are experienced Acrobat users may not need it, but I am not and this book really gets right down to the things I need to know to use Acrobat in my work.

Review Date: 2005-08-18
"Legal Construction of Identity: The Judicial and Social Legacy of American Colonialism in Puerto Rico" by Efren Rivera Ramos is a fascinating book on the legal and historical analysis on the colonization of Puerto Rico.

This book is not for the casual reader on the topic of Puerto Rico. However, the book provides a wealth of knowledge for those interested in the colonization of Puerto Rico and its effects on its political, economical, and cultural identity. How the American colonization of Puerto Rico has affected the relationship between them ? a bond that has remained fragile from its very beginning is well depicted by the author. Ramos writes of the United States ideology of expansionism that was so prominent during the nineteenth and the twentieth century. As a professor of law, he examines how the American judicial system was utilized in the creation of colonial Puerto Rico and the subjection of its people.

Ramos examines the Foraker Act of 1900; the Jones Act of 1917; and the Insular Cases, whereby the Supreme Court of the United States instituted the framework for applying the US Constitution to the Philippines, Cuba, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The topic of American citizenship imposed on Puerto Ricans in 1917 is covered in detail along with both positive and negative consequences of that action. The struggles that Puerto Rico confronted after American colonization and the difficulties it continues to face today in maintaining its cultural identity are well emphasized by Ramos.

"Legal Construction of Identity: The Judicial and Social Legacy of American Colonialism in Puerto Rico" is an intensely written and convincing book. A worthy and welcome blend of judicial, political, and social history. It is intelligently researched and written - it's an eye-opening piece of work that entices the reader to think about the phrase "truth, justice and the American way". This book deserves its place on the shelves of the best of Puerto Rican historical literature.

In this unique book, David Attenborough has undertaken a history of nature, from one-celled organisms in the primeval slime more than 3000 million years ago to modern day's humans. The book presents a chronological account of the life on planet Earth over a period of 3,500 million years. Life on Earth is an astonishing array of characters drawn from the whole range of living animals the world over. Attenborough takes the reader around the world with him into jungles, deserts and remote mountains. The book's 13 chapters follow the sequence of main events in the evolution of life on earth. The book details the emergence of one-celled, then multi-celled organisms; the movement of life from sea to land; adaptation to life in the air; the development of warm-blooded animals; the transition between ground life and tree life; and finally the evolution of man himself.

Without question this is a wonderful book that addresses many of our personal, human problems, including how to deal and cope with them. This book is not just about sleep but about living a meaningful life. If you want a quick fix or magic bullet for sleep difficulties, look elsewhere. But if you want to examine your heart, mind, and even your soul, then you will find, like I did by following the suggestions given in the book, that "Live Well, Sleep Well" is an excellent guide to a sense of peace and tranquility. It's not entirely about the number of hours we sleep, but the quality of our sleep.

Ostensibly, Live Well, Sleep Well is about getting a good night's sleep, but it turns out to be much more. It truly is a "fully holstic" treatment of the subject of living well. The author's words will convince you more than any review like this one, so see for yourself and read the book. Also, note that here is a book by a true writer who is more than just an "author," which is evident from the quality of the writing.

Contemporary urban life is hallmarked by chronic and habitually insufficient and inadequate sleep for millions of people. In Live Well, Sleep Well: The Holistic Way To A Good Night's Sleep, Dan Campbell addresses this epidemic health problem by surveying modern sleep research in conjunction with the information on sleep in the Edgar Cayce readings. Campbell reveals why we need sleep, what happens when sleep suffers, and how to improve sleep through a blend of modern medicine and the spiritual/health advice to be found in the Cayce readings. Practical, in-depth, meaningful, insightful, and "user friendly", Live Well, Sleep Well is very highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader seeking to directly address a need for an improved and more refreshing sleep.

Took 3 guides to London for our 2005 trip. This guide has the best pictures of the 3. Most of the information is very good. The walking tours are the best! It even tells you when to stop and eat.hmmmmm

The guide doesn't really cover all aspects if you are new to the culture and city. No real tips on staying out of trouble and the detailed city map is combersome. That aside, the book is well put together with wire spirals, the cover is a hard paper for good construction.

The book is filled with beautiful color photos, great descriptions, planned itineraries, and a fantastic detailed map. We are planning on traveling to Rome this summer and AAA's Rome guide is the only travel book we will be purchasing before we go.

My wife and I used this travel guide extensively while in London. It served as our bible, tour guide, and street map. It is laid out in a very clearly and the sprial binder makes it very easy to flip to any page. It is filled with clear, color pictures and maps. The guide is broken down into various regions throughout London, with each section highlighting Must See Attractions, and then At Your Leisure sites that are also in the area. It also has a very nice reference on how to see a region in one day. An Underground map is on the inside back cover, and a regional map of London on the front inside cover. Other nice features are sections called 'Finding Your Feet' - which provides great information for when you first arrive in London (either by plane, train, boat, etc..) and a 'Practicalities' seciton that talks about currency, clothes sizes, etc.

What really made this book stand out compared to other London travel guides was it included detailed street maps of these regions. Those proved invaluable for us once we started walking around the area. The book is compact, and fit inside my coat pocket comfortably.

This is a classic book of military history and a truly rare book. If you're reading it, either you where blessed to know Father Sampson or have an obscure interest in military history of the rarest kind.

Father Sampson joined the US Army and volunteered for the paratroops as a chaplain. He was an unarmed hero more concerned with the welfare of his troops he parachuted into Normandy, France on D-Day, protected only with his devotion to God and his uncompromising faith. He was later captured at The Battle of the Bulge and spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp where he continued to serve his men.

Father Sampson would later serve in Korea and Vietnam and earned a large number of decorations for courage under fire. He even received a Purple Heart for wounds. Sampson was the right name for a man so brave and pure of heart.

I won't spoil this story for you as a reader. It's a great read about a man who was much better, much more courageous and decent a man than I.

The book reads wonderfully and is a joy to own. What can I say about it? Not only is it an inspirational story and a great history book. But honestly, it makes me want to be a better Catholic.

This book is a must-read for every American who values his freedom and who realizes that it depends on the brave sacrifices of others. When Steven Spielberg produced Saving Pvt Ryan, he unfortunately left out critical parts of this true story. It was the brave Catholic Chaplain Francis Sampson who actually did the dangerous job of Saving Pvt Ryan. Fr. Sampson was the chaplain to whom Fritz Niland went when he wanted prayer and help in going to locate the bodies of his 2 brothers who'd just been killed hours before in the Normandy invasion and he also was inform4ed of the death of his 3rd brother in Burma. The 4 brave Niland brothers--3 of whom went to Canisius College and 1 to Univ. of Buffalo in the 1930's before they entered the service along with their cousin Pete Niland--also 101st Airborne--and said brave family is acknowledged by Spielberg in the Prologue to Saving Pvt Ryan, would have made an outstanding movie of itself. But the life of Father Francis Sampson--who parachuted in 3 wars and was a POW twice in WW II and has been honored with hundreds of awards--is a hero whose outstanding life could easily alone become an outstandig movie. When you read Look Out Below! you'll get chills up your spine and tears in your eyes. What honor, bravery, love and guts! It makes me proud to be an American and a Catholic. God Bless Father Sampson, God Bless the Niland Family and God Bless America!

A must have for Airborne enthusiasts!

Saving Private Ryan was based on a short true account on page 86 of this book. Father Sampson of the 101st in Normandy is trying to help a young soldier find the cemetary his brother is in, when he is told that another brother is also dead, killed on the same day. Meanwhile, a third brother has been killed in the Pacific. Sampson gives a historical account of his life in the 101st. His tales of Normandy are especially riviting.

A well crafted tome. Guterman's book Mastering the Art of Solution-Focused Counseling is an important resource for helping counselors learn the theory and practice of this innovative approach. The book includes both complex theoretical underpinnings and practical clinical guidelines. I strongly recommend this book for clinicians interested in working from a solution-focused perspective. The only quibble I have about this book is that I was left wanting a bit more. But this seems appropriate given the minimalist approach set forth in solution-focused counseling and the "less is better" philosophy that Guterman advocates.

First, let me admit something. The author is my husband. So, it is hard, even nearly impossible for me to be objective in my review of this book. Despite this, I still think the book has merit. It is easy to read and very entertaining. I think it describes the ideas of solution-focused counseling in a clear and straightforward way. There are many case examples and Jeffrey writes with a unique style. So, I suggest counselors go ahead and buy this book and read it.

When a question arises about habitat, water preference, etc., we whip out the ole' McClanes to settle the argument. The pictures offer a true rendition of the fish which aides in rapid identification. The descriptions give vital information, while remaining brief enough to allow the book to function as a true "field" guide.I highly recommend this book to any angler or saltwater fish enthusiasts in need of a pocket guide.

McClane's saltwater fish identification guide is a must for every angler -- sunburned beginner or salty old pro -- who casts a line into our bays and oceans. The most outstanding among this guide's many strengths are its clear, concise writing in the description of each fish, and the strikingly life-like, full-color artistic renditions of most of the fish. The fish are organized by family; so where there are related species on the Atlantic and Pacific sides (e.g., among sea bass), the book does jump somewhat to and fro. However, with its thorough index and vivid illustrations, any saltwater angler should be able to locate that "mystery fish" in McClane's within less than a minute. This book accompanied me on every fishing trip in my years of angling in South Florida and the Keys; and many an unknown fish was revealed through McClane's pages. With this book, the difference between sheepshead and spadefish (for example) is obvious -- in feeding habits, location, water preferences and any characteristic of appearance. Whether you catch a Spanish mackeral, ladyfish, jack crevalle or even the ugly (but tasty!) guitarfish, McClanes can teach you all the important information about it, quickly. It's the perfect size for the tacklebox; but be sure to put it in a freezer bag to keep it dry.

Linda Hudson has done a wonderful job of following the travels and trials of Jane McManus Storm Cazneau from her youth in New York to her involvement in Texas land deals in the 1830's and her mission to Mexico City in the midst of the Mexican War in the 1840's to her life in Eagle Pass, Texas, (which she somehow did not at first realize was literally the middle of no where) to her exploits in Cuba and her return to New York City to play a role in the presidential campaign of 1852.

She has shown the complexity of the politics of the times especially as they relate to the question of slavery and its expansion into Texas. She has also related the very complicated life of a woman who was liberated long before being a liberated woman was considered cool. In doing so, she has created a far more complex view of society in the United States in the middle of the 19th century than many historians have uncovered...or been willing to admit to having uncovered.

It is a wonderful trip into the history not only of the United States but also of Mexico and the Caribbean that she has taken with Jane Cazneau and that she allows the reader to share.

I did make a correction that I wish to share with other readers in case someone might choose to use Harold Klawans' otherwise excellent description of what is considered medical literature, which is quoted in chapter 8. I found this book to be highly readable, well indexed, and a valuable source for report writing and preparing court testimony. The research cited is current, validity and clinical scales well defined, and sources of bias clearly stated. In addition, ethical considerations and pitfalls of reliance on this testing instrument are provided. Excellent comparisons of the MMPI and MMPI-2 including modified, deleted, and new items. Extremely valuable for any psychologist going to court and explaining to a judge or jury to results and interpretations of this instrument.

I was subjected to the MMPI and it's interpretations while attempting to maintain equal parenting time of my son. After my attorney ignored repeated requests for the results, I fired him, and have since represented myself.

Knowledge is Power. This book provides a "survey course" that will help pro per litigants. After reading it, I knew more about the MMPI than my lawyer.

In a court of law, you should be able to ask the forensic psychologist, "Sir, was the MMPI designed to evaluate parental ability"? Of course, the answer is, "No". But in family court, Rules of Evidence do not apply. If you memorize this book, you will be able to take apart any forensic psychologist.

Good Luck,

Kids Need Both Parents
