By itself, "The Western Bird Watcher" is a neat book that describes the general habitats of the west, gives the best locations to see certain western birds, and then extensively discusses the more difficult groups of birds to identify in the field. Zimmer is only one of two authors to have written comprehensive books on general bird identification beyond the scope of field guides (see also Kaufman, "Advanced Birding"), and one of the two Zimmer books, preferably the new one, is a must-have for anyone living or travelling in the west interested in going out and seeing/finding birds.
The one cool thing this book has that the newer one doesn't are a few dozen photographs of side-by-side museum specimens of hard-to-distinguish birds. I've not seen that in any other guide or book.764418Reference290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books3049151Ornithology13563Zoology13469Biological Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0316817147http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Birdhouse-Book-Attracting-Nesting/dp/0316817147%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0316817147313058http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YaTHIcxeL._SL75_.jpg7557http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YaTHIcxeL._SL160_.jpg160121http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YaTHIcxeL._SL500_.jpg500379Donald W. I think it is excellent for the beginning bird house builder as well as the advanced work worker.

It's good for the beginner because it explains the basics and gives one or two very simple, easy to build designs that will work. It also explains what is important in getting birds to use them and why.

It's good for a more experienced birder/woodworker because it gives you something far more valuable than a cookie cutter plan - it gives you the critical entrance hole and box dimensions required for each species. Armed with this information, a good woodworker can create their own designs and be as creative as they like. After all, a birdhouse is essentially a box with a hole in it. Detailed plans aren't required, at least not for the things the birds care about (entrance holes, box dimensions, placement).

If you aren't comfortable doing basic woodworking yet, do yourself a favor a buy a book devoted to the subject. And if all you care about is pretty designs - regardless of whether birds use them - look elsewhere. But if your primary goal is getting birds to nest in your birdhouses, buy this book.
03168171471002007-12-29Only one plan in the entire book, very disappointingThis book is a huge letdown. I was hoping for some plans on birdhouses. What you get instead is pictures of the BIRDS (not the houses) and only one plan for super basic and simple square birdhouse plan. Don't waste your money on this one.03168171474442007-07-04USEFUL BOOK - BUT WITH LIMITATIONS.First, let me state that I am a big fan of Donald and Lillian Stokes and their many guide books. For the most part, these are all very useful guides and this team has done a great job of bring the wonders of our natural world to us. With this work though, and I consider it thier weakest work, they come up a bit short. I suppose the title "The Complete Birdhouse Book," I feel, is a bit misleading. It is far from "complete." The authors do give us some of the best work I have seen in this area as to bird house placement, care and maintenance. But they come up quite lacking in the area of actually building a bird house! The beginning woodworker will find the scant directions difficult to follow even for the most basic of houses. When they get into the area of "advanced" houses, well, forget it! There are dozens and dozens of books out there that cover this subject much better and are actually useful.

On the other hand, I did find this book to be quite useful in the placement of the house, and very informative as to the nesting habits of several of the birds that use houses to nest, so not all was lost. The book is well organized, the photographs are great and the text easy to read. I am giving this one four stars rather than three simply because of the apparent effort that went into writing this book and simply because these are the Stokes. I just wish they had been more adept in the area of birdhouse construction. 03168171475112007-03-26Superb for beginners! Our [....] has recently become very interested in identifying birds. We have tons in our backyard after putting out a feeder, so we wanted to build a house so we can watch them nest--as a beginner, where do you begin?

We orderd this on a whim & because it was only 83 cents on amazon, The Complete Birdhouse Book--The Easy Guide to Attracting Nesting Birds by Donald & Lillian Stokes. When it arrived I was overjoyed with how wonderful this book is--it is full color, talks in-depth about the bird life-cycle with full color pictures & specifically what different birds need in a home--and thus, how to construct it! What beginner ever knew the hole size, hole to floor measurement & inside dimensions & total height were so important--not to mention where it is placed & what type of things to leave in your yard for nesting material! Also, how to control predators & pests & other useful information. Now we know what our titmice, cardinal, chickadees, & hairy woodpecker prefer! Full color pictures again & highly educational---a good companion for anyone wanting to attract birds to their yard!

Our favorite bird guide--the indexing is superb for my [....] trying to find a bird in it--is the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America. It has good pics of male, female & juvenile & easy to understand maps. We supplement it with the DK Guide to Eastern birds of North America--it has great pictures & info on each bird, the eggs, nesting, food, etc--more detail than just the field guide--very educational! We're loving God's wild world in our back yard!03168171473442005-04-01Just basic stuff...ok for a starterEven though there's only 1 plan, you do learn what some specific needs of some specific birds are. You can buy simple kits to assemble at houses4birds.comIllustrated with beautiful color photographs, this latest Stokes project shows readers how to attract birdhouse nesting birds to their yards. It is for any bird lover who wants to have the singular pleasure of watching the family life of birds at close range and to help protect species whose natural habitats are diminsihing. And the recordings for each bird are minimal at best.039597519041821841999-05-26Not portable-CD-player friendlyI own the 1992 edition, which has been very useful. The latest edition is the '92 edition repackaged; the contents are the same. I confirmed this with the publisher. The price has dropped merely because the packaging is cheaper to produce; that's according to their editorial staff.
If you wish to use the Peterson CDs "in the field" with a portable CD player, or if you use it frequently at home, there is something you should know:
Peterson organizes the songs into two CDs, each with about 50 tracks. Each track contains from 2 to 8 birds. If you want to hear a specific bird without hearing others, you can go directly to that bird if your CD player has the INDEX function. An index is like a subtrack.
Herein lies the problem; most portable CD players no longer have the INDEX feature. It was phased out years ago. Thus, you have to listen to all the birds of a track to hear the one you want, and as you get better at birding this becomes tedious.
It should be mentioned that most CD players do have a "search" function which allows you to "fast forward" through a track. But this is awkward to use.
Some makers of bird song collections on CD (e.g. Stokes, new out in May 99) have learned of this problem and have corrected it by recording one bird per track. Stokes also seems to have clearer and longer recordings. However, this format means that the full collection requires 4 CDs. Thus, using Stokes in the field has its own problems.
If you can find a portable CD player with the INDEX function, the Peterson CD works well, especially the Eastern Birds, which is one-volume. I can just plop my portable CD player into the pocket of my field vest, and any time I want to confirm a warbler species I can cue up that bird in an instant. I can quickly INDEX through the birds calls and compare. Peterson gives the bird label and the bird song separate indexes, so you don't have to listen to the announcer naming all the birds. But unless CD player makers change their minds, this convenience may die when my '89 Sony portable does.Features: Includes an informative 48-page booklet. Here is the western edition of A Field Guide to Bird Songs. This edition includes the songs and calls of 522 species. It's about areas in NC to look for birds.I returned it.North Carolina harbors an incredible diversity of habitats that provide food and shelter for more than 440 bird species throughout the year, making the state a destination for birders and nature lovers. The North Carolina Birding Trail is a driving trail linking birders and tourists with great birding sites across the state and the local communities in which they are found.
The first of three regional guides, the Coastal Plain Trail Guide presents 102 birding destinations east of Interstate 95. The spiral-bound volume features maps, detailed site descriptions, and color photographs throughout. Each site description includes directions as well as information on access, focal species and habitats, and on-site visitor amenities. Special "while you're in the area" listings accompany each of sixteen site groupings, so visitors can travel to a cluster of birding destinations and enjoy other local highlights and attractions along the way.0762731346Birding North Carolina: More Than 40 Premier Birding Locations (Birding Series)0807844535A Birder's Guide to Coastal North Carolina0807859176The North Carolina Birding Trail: Piedmont Trail Guide0762739150Birding Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend: More than 75 Prime Birding Sites (Falcon Guide)0618966145Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America (Peterson Field Guides(R))17041Guidebooks17025Reference & Tips27Travel1000Subjects283155Books17213Ecotourism17205Specialty Travel27Travel1000Subjects283155Books3210871Travel with Pets17205Specialty Travel27Travel1000Subjects283155Books17250South Atlantic17244South17228Regions17227United States27Travel1000Subjects283155Books67519General17373North Carolina17263States17227United States27Travel1000Subjects283155Books290110General16386Birdwatching290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books764418Reference290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books3049151Ornithology13563Zoology13469Biological Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books14279271South Carolina14278871State & Local4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0385411464http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Birder-Five-Star-Birding-Vacations/dp/0385411464%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0385411464736545http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PMfPwpIOL._SL75_.jpg7548http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PMfPwpIOL._SL160_.jpg160103http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PMfPwpIOL._SL500_.jpg500322Clive GoodwinPaperback598.072349780385411462840385411464EnglishEnglishEnglish8571900USD$19.00Main Street Books1324Book1991-04-01Main Street Books1991-04-01Main Street BooksThe Traveling Birder: 20 Five-Star Birding Vacations (Traveling Birder)104556695USD$6.951USD$0.0121220011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewftHXAbMmNmHw7As7MLx74LxDUvE91lMBnAOIpQSa%2FH2V7mlBaqYN9DcOUwqa0p4svxBdjpm0cHBPxAoNV%2BVg1Q%3D%3D1900USD$19.00Usually ships in 24 hours3.02103854114642222005-01-15What happened to South America? How can a book about great birding spots not have a single mention of South America? 03854114644442003-12-10Guide for Bird Watchers who TravelBirders (a.k.a. bird watchers) can approach their hobby several ways. There's the backyard birder who enjoys feeding and otherwise attracting birds to his/her backyard. Then there's the lister, who keeps a list of species seen (whether in a time period such as a year or in a lifetime) and is always trying to see the next new bird. I feel that among listers there are several types, some who chase the rare (pronounced "lost") birds that blunder to a "migrant trap" near the birders' home, and others who'd rather travel to where the birds should be. This book is for the later group.
There are quite a few bird finding books out there, many good but perhaps none of them perfect. Some of them give detailed lists of what can be seen at each location covered. This one does not. However, that's not necessarily a strong negative because some of the lists in the other books seem to list lots of rarities. If you follow the lists blindly, you may find yourself searching for rarities rather than what is common at that locale.
This book is first and foremost a book for daydreaming. Sure, the advice is practical and you get a good idea of what to expect at each location. But the scope of the chapters range from specific sanctuaries to countries. You may end up getting practical advice about an outstanding sanctuary not terribly far from you and start day dreaming about a trip to Kenya "someday".
If you are a bird watcher who likes to travel, you will probably enjoy this book very much. In fact, you don't need to be an expert birder to enjoy this book.079225483XNational Geographic Guide to Birding Hot Spots of the United States (National Geographic Guide)1584796294Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Birding Experts Share The World's Greatest Destinations0812970365The American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States: Key Sites for Birds and Birding in All 50 States067945120XThe Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America0618926151All Things Reconsidered: My Birding Adventures17041Guidebooks17025Reference & Tips27Travel1000Subjects283155Books17045Reference17025Reference & Tips27Travel1000Subjects283155Books290111Birdwatching17207Adventure17205Specialty Travel27Travel1000Subjects283155Books197498011General27Travel1000Subjects283155Books290110General16386Birdwatching290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books408268General21Reference1000Subjects283155Books3049151Ornithology13563Zoology13469Biological Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books11086921General26Sports1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0812970365http://www.amazon.com/American-Conservancy-Important-United-States/dp/0812970365%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0812970365188209http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P1KC6AB5L._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P1KC6AB5L._SL160_.jpg160106http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P1KC6AB5L._SL500_.jpg475314American Bird ConservancyPaperback598.072347397808129703641500812970365EnglishEnglishEnglish8802595USD$25.95Random House Trade Paperbacks1560Book2003-11-18Random House Trade Paperbacks2003-11-18Random House Trade PaperbacksThe American Bird Conservancy Guide to the 500 Most Important Bird Areas in the United States: Key Sites for Birds and Birding in All 50 States225620590USD$5.90281USD$2.8127230011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewoLpIjvkfnGSLSixNSPCGNteKvMfzeEEtOrd5%2FNVEtyeCL4IbLrk%2FGNcrAEi6p4XIvLcCbO6Tqt4tZVD0nPoy1g%3D%3D1894USD$18.94Usually ships in 24 hours3.01108129703653352007-01-18OK but not as detailed as expectedThis is a good book to throw in your suitcase if you are a birder and like to travel. His first guide was to southeastern Arizona, one of the great birding areas of the US. This is the 1990 update (by Harold Holt) to that original guide. At the time of its publication, it was perhaps the top guide to the area (and would have earned 4 or 5 stars from me). But now it is sadly out of date.

Happily in 1995, a totally redone version by Richard Taylor was published in the ABA/Lane Guide series. What a great book! It continued the high standard pioneered by Jim Lane and is published in the series that cnotinues to bear his name. And now a newer 2005 version is pending.

Buy this 1990 version of the book for historical interest. Buy the 2005 version to take along on that unforgettable birding trip to southeastern Arizona.

Desert Island), outside of that area it is poor. A guide to birding in Maine that does not even mention Scarborough Marsh??? Something like 3 sites mentioned in all of Southern Maine, which I know fairly well, and no better for the Downeast region and upstate, which I would like to know better. Needs much better research before it can be called "Birding Maine".07627422402662008-03-30Too much left out. I was excited when I pre-ordered this new book! After getting it I am quite dissapointed. No mention of Machias Seal Island where Puffin watching (and lots of other birds) is truly amazing. I Didn't see anything on Mt. Desert Island where I have observed eagles, loons, and many more birds. Paper quality not very good. I just feel that this was a quickly done, poor quality attempt to cover the state of Maine but it didn't quite make it for me!!

Birding Maine presents well-known and not-so-well known sites, including many that have never appeared in any other publication. Birding Maine details how and when to bird each site, and gives aside and anecdotal information on nearby places of interest, as well as the nearest stores, restaurants and campsites.

089933282XMaine Atlas & Gazetteer0762739134Birding Oregon: 44 Prime Birding Areas with More Than 200 Specific Sites (Falcon Guide)0899332773North Carolina Atlas & Gazetteer (North Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer)0762739142Birding Florida: Over 200 Prime Birding Sites at 54 Locations (Where to Bird)0618726411Peterson Reference Guides: Gulls of the Americas (Peterson Reference Guides)17242New England17236Northeast17228Regions17227United States27Travel1000Subjects283155Books17337Maine17263States17227United States27Travel1000Subjects283155Books290110General16386Birdwatching290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books764418Reference290060Outdoors & Nature1000Subjects283155Books3049151Ornithology13563Zoology13469Biological Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books16266351All Deals13706741Blowout Books44258011Specialty Stores283155Books16266491Outdoors & Nature13706741Blowout Books44258011Specialty Stores283155Books16266541Science13706741Blowout Books44258011Specialty Stores283155Books16266571Travel13706741Blowout Books44258011Specialty Stores283155Books394172011Bargain Books394171011Promotion (special_merchandising_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books076272577Xhttp://www.amazon.com/Birding-Washington-Natalie-McNair-Huff/dp/076272577X%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D076272577X730163http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KW37S8C5L._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KW37S8C5L._SL160_.jpg160107http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KW37S8C5L._SL500_.jpg500333Natalie McNair-HuffRob and Natalie McNair-HuffPaperback598.072347979780762725779100076272577XEnglishEnglishEnglish8901695USD$16.95Falcon1400Book2004-10-01FalconFalconBirding Washington (Birding Series)140580295USD$2.9546USD$0.4617200011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewMnP3RuuwueO6p0U4OTeaLEwEyhWqj3%2BEXV0D%2BcV38HGzCMFfsQmSm%2B66cPxp%2B9D%2BbMy9iV8%2FJpoPKbQOdOUmEQ%3D%3D1356USD$13.56Usually ships in 24 hours2.021076272577X2002008-09-09not good for Identifying birds quicklythis book tells you where to find birds but does not really help identify them. I own several "Falcon Guides", and have found them all to be very informative and useful, until now. The information within this book is excellent, but finding what you want is VERY difficult. I can't believe anyone would publish a book/guide such as this and not include any place-names in the back-of-the-book index!!! The index is comprised entirely of bird names. Every other Falcon Guide I own has place-names in the index.
