This is an excellent book about the history of writing and books not just in the Vatican but in General. It has wonderful prints and photographs of ancient texts and very in depth histories. I was most pleased with its treatment of classical mathematics and extant Greek writings. In general this book is an interesting read, though may be a bit academic for the average reader.

The Rebirth of modern scholarship in the Renaissance
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-25
Anthony Grafton's "Rome Reborn" is not just a simple and well done 'exhibition catalogue' intended to be a luxurious appendix to the famous exhibition of 1993 held in the Library of Congress. On the contrary, his 'magnum opus' not only exceeds by far the boundaries of this genre, but also laid the new foundations of modern scholarship in the field of Renaissance studies focusing on Rome and its cultural rebirth in the Renaissance. In combining several methodologies which have been used separately in various disciplines before, Grafton showed himself once more the absolute master of contemporary Renaissance Studies in its broadest sense. His "Rome Reborn" should therefore be on the desk of everyone occupied (professionaly or in another way) with the cultural history of the Renaissance.

This is a great little book with many photos and facts about Romeo, MI, the town I've lived in for over 20 years. There were so many interesting facts and information I never was aware of! It's been fun to read this book and see photos from so many years ago.

I found this book most enjoyable, lighthearted, and filled with facts I never knew about this quaint little town.It has a rich musical history with performances by many well known music groups, and is a virtual throwback to a more peaceful, simple time.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever lived and/or visited this charming village.Kudos to David McLaughlin! We read Roughing It on the Oregon Trail by Diane Stanley. 2 twins stay with their grandmother and get to go back in time to meet some relatives and travel on the Oregon Trail. A little along the lines as the Magic Tree House books but this one is a picture book. It really was very interesting and I even learned some things I did not know. Recommended for ages 5-10 years.

History that reads like a story

My 6 yr old son and 8 year old daughter paid close attention and enjoyed this book. My daughter enjoyed reading the bubble conversation; I read the text part. Nice illustrations - neither they nor the story was too dark as is sometimes a problem with historical fiction for this age. Sort of a Magic School Bus feel to it, with travel back in time.

Highly recommended for students of Archeology & Peru

Much is known and published about the Incas of Peru, but, in comparison, little is known about the great Kingdom of the Moches. In the Northwest aired coastal plains of Peru flourished the Moche kingdom between the first and eighth century A.D.

This highly stratified culture, constructed and maintained a vast irrigation canal system, pyramids, places and temples. The Royal Tombs of Sipan was written to serve as a museum catalogue of the finds. The discovery, excavation, and current

interpretation of the three royal tombs recovered from Sipan happened between 1987 and 1990.

This book is wonderful. The beautiful color plates that chronologically lay out this amazing discovery makes the archeological dig at Sipan come alive. Highly recommended for those students of Archeology and those who are interested in the diverse Peruvian Culture.

Wonderful book with many beautiful photos and reconstructs.

As an ancient history enthusiast, I found this book to be a fabulous discovery on my part. The oversized format and pull-out recreations are pure joys to the reader. The excellent text, penned by the excavating archaeologist and by the leading authority on Moche iconography, is illustrated with wonderfully detailed photos as well as line drawings of scenes imprinted upon the artifacts themselves. I recommend this volume to anyone interested in pre-Inca history and art, as well as to anyone fascinated by the mystery revolving around the discovery of ancient treasures.

I have lived in San Luis Obispo for over 19 years and have never seen a book this detailed about our cities history. Everyone that picks it up wants to buy a copy for themselves or for one of their friends or family members. My favorite part of the entire book is the fact that Ms. Franks included the address' of many of the homes so that you can walk or drive by and see them present day. And the pictures of the downtown area are amazing. If you haven't bought it yet you will want to as soon as you get a copy in your hands.
Bravo Janet!

in 1964, it is a true joy to have this book. Some of the businesses and photographs feature my ancestors. The only flaw is that the authors get the order of descendants off a bit and a picture showing my great grandfather in the band only correctly identifies him if you read right to left instead of left to right. All in all, it brings back great memories. I now live about 45 minutes away in Raleigh, NC. I will always have fond memories of growing up in Sanford.

Arcadia has really done an outstanding publishing job on this beautiful work by Mr. Haire and Mr. Seymour...the rare photographs and informative captians combine to give the reader a glimpse of North Carolina then and now...The pictoral artifacts take the reader to a far off yet so near place in time...and the colorful comments by Mr. Seymour add clarity and substance to the proceedings...Highly recommended to readers worldwide!!!

A Beautiful Book About A Beautiful City

I visited Santa Fe 20 years ago and was charmed by the city, enough so that I moved here and have made it my home. I keep meeting other people with the same story.

So what a pleasure it is to find this beautifully photographed love song to Santa Fe! The historical photos are fascinating. I recognize some of the spots, but many places have changed so much. The nice thing is that Santa Fe, while growing and changing, retains is charm and its easygoing atmosphere.

This book is a treasure.

I believe that the photographs capture the essence of Savannah. Susan Sully has provided us with a sketchbook of Savannah's mystery and charm. The over the top decorating schemes are perfectly matched to the quirky and brooding characters who inhabit these fabulous southern mansions. Every photograph evoked a glimpse of a place we would all secretly love to share.

Is it possible to be in love with a book? When I ordered Savannah Style, I could hardly wait for its arrival. I wasn't disappointed - in fact, it is even better than I anticipated, having read other reviews prior to purchase. The photographs are gorgeous and reflective, and entice one to have a certain mood when reading this wonderful book. And read it I did, because it is not only beautiful, but intelligent as well. Although Sully is intent on the mystery element of Savannah, it is still a beautiful book to own and love. The question is, 'When can I immigrate?'

SCOTLAND'S TRAGIC LOSE
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-22
This is a very well produced book on Scotlands great lost estates. The text is highly informative and the images are fanstastic. It is so disgraceful that so many of these great houses were so underappreciated, they were torn down like dilapidated public housing: it's tragic. The great Robert Adam house Bardelie was the worst lose, how anyone could tear down this masterpiece is unfathonable. The book is a joy to peruse, but you can't help but have a touch of meloncholy for the ease at which the philitines pulled so many of these great houses down. Be assured, you'll never see the likes of these houses again.

Fascinating read

As a fan of Scottish country houses I found this book to be very interesting reading. There are many particularly fine photographs detailing the history of these fine buildings which unfortunately became victims of changing times.
