Before I bought a book about roman history I have visually searched through at least 20 books, and this is book of my choice.
I think this is a great book, it has lots of detailed and precise information about roman history. This book has a simple to understand, and easy to navigate layout, which is helps a lot. I like roman history time line, this book has a great photographs, illustrations, and precise artist's renderings. I'm using this book as a reference book for matte paintings that I create, in roman empire times.
Great book to buy!

An eye-catching summary of ancient Roman geography, history, and visual splendor

Historical Atlas of Ancient Rome is an eye-catching summary of ancient Roman geography, history, and visual splendor. Illustrated with full-color photographs of Roman artifacts, architecture, and maps - including reconstructed maps of the city as it must have once stood - grace this amazing reference cover to cover. Since it is a historical atlas, the main focus is on geography and maps, but references to all aspects of Roman culture and its impact on subsequent civilizations abound. The text is accessible for lay readers and spells out the course of Roman history from its rise to its increasingly inevitable fall due to incompetent emperors, a self-serving bureaucracy, and a border far larger than its armies could protect. Highly recommended for library and personal history collections.

This is the story about the people and companies behind fourteen of the most successful 20th century commercial breakthroughs: the VCR, the Post-it note, ChemLawn, Tagamet, the Walkman, The CAT Scanner, the microwave oven, Toyota manufacturing system, Nike, Nautilus, propylene, Federal Express, Club Med, and the compact disk.]

The authors, who were consultants with Arthur D. Little at the time, wanted to find out if these successes could help them develop a magic "how to" formula for others to follow. Strangely enough for consultants, they admit that there is no such universal formula. Instead, they offer us many highly valuable myths and instructive lessons.

Each of these fourteen fascinating stories is a case study that shows innovation at work. But through these stories we build the idea that a commercial breakthrough is less about the invention of the product itself and more about how market visionaries and savvy business people transform inventions into commercial breakthroughs. All major breakthroughs were indeed the results of great teamwork between the key techical, visionary, and business players. Seldom are these skills and interests present in a single individual.

The book is also an illustration that breakthroughs happened not because of what management does but in spite of it. It takes people of courage to fight the tape and it takes great companies to allow them to do it.

The book is out of print; so the only way to get iy is to buy a used one. I hope the publisher could bring a new edition because there is no other books that cover so much in a single volume.

Highly recommended.

This was an excellent book about innovations that are common today but were thought to be failures as originally conceived. The stories cover Post-It Notes, the JVC/Sony VHS vs. Beta battle, the Sony Walkman and others.

Don't do as I did and loan it out; you'll never get it back!

This is a book that I wish I had not read and yet it is one of the best books I have ever read. Camille Claudel's soul found it's path into mine and I felt all the hate towards August Rodin that she was incapable of because of her love for him and breathtaking passion for her own and his work. In a lot of ways this book resembles "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" in revealing how a human spirit will not bend....

A Remarkable Biography of a Remarkable Woman

Review Date: 2001-06-29
Ann Delbee's nonfiction treasure introduces us to one of the most compelling personalities of recent history. Camille Claudel was, in trite terms that fail miserably to serve her, a contemporary, colleague, and lover of the famed sculptor Auguste Rodin. Not merely a biography, but an unabashed dissection of the life, loves, and works of a true Renaissance woman, this biographical masterpiece illuminates every nuance of an extremely complex persona. Detail and development are so extensive that it is difficult to remind oneself that this is not AUTOBIOGRAPHY. We are thrust into the midst of the stormy relationship between Claudel and Rodin and learn of her influence on the great artist's life and work. At the same time we reflect on Claudel's own place in the art world of her time. The artist paints a vivid portrait of Camille's home and family life, particularly the special bond she shared with her brother, the poet Paul Claudel. Delbee succeeds with splendor in developing an understanding of Camille's unique positon as a woman in her society. Ultimately, Camille Claudel rises from these pages both triumphant and tragic.

Gripping story of young girl in Resistance in 2WW

Review Date: 2002-12-19
Outstanding account of how a young 13-year old Belgian girl decided to fight the German occupation of her country. She had no training, no background but committed herself to fight the evil Nazi menace in the only way she knew how, helping her brother who was an "eminence grise" of the shadowy and dangerous resistance community. These courageous acts brought arrest, torture and she was sent to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp, north of Berlin. Mark Bles has done a fantastic job of research, bringing to life this fanatastic true life account.

Comming from someone who has read extensively on resistance movements during WWII this is by far the best account. It is inspiring as well as informative. The text comes alive, and the reader is transported to war torn Belgium. Someday this book will be recognized by scholars as the difinitive account of the Belgian Resistance.

Costume, Textiles And Jewellery Of India: Traditions In Rajasthan is a wondrously informative exploration of traditional Indian attire. Lavishly illustrated with full color photographs on every page, Costume, Textiles And Jewellery Of India reveals how Indian attire proclaims one's place of origin, social position, marital status, occupation, religious affiliations, and even reflections on the changing seasons as well as other psychological aspects of day-to-day life. Information drawn from fifteen years of dedicated research is transformed into a highly accessible and wondrous tour of the physical, historical, trade, cultural and spiritual factors inherent in Indian textiles. A beautiful and enriching tour as eye-catching for lay readers as it is for serious-minded garment designers understanding and inspiration in India's ancient traditions.

social meanings of Indian garments

Review Date: 2005-03-01
The Indian clothing expert Bhandari does a tour de force. Nothing is left out--from origins of and historical influences on Indian garb to materials and manufacture; from basic clothing to the variety of ornaments and accessories; from jewelry and bracelets to class and ethnic wear. The often exotic Indian clothing so noticeable to outsiders does not basically reflect the fashion tastes or personality of the wearer, but instead mainly denotes social station and sometimes occupation. As expected, the more sumptuous clothing and jewelry goes with those of higher class. But the typical clothing of farmers, laborers, and lower-class Indians is also colorful and elaborate in its own way. Rajasthan in northwestern India was chosen as the focus for this one-of-a-kind work because of its historical and cultural significance and the mix of different classes and ethnic groups found there. The Indian state's name is derived from Rajputs, or "sons of kings." Bhandari's meticulous text is so fascinating and endlessly informative that one is hardly conscious of the exhaustive scholarship and research going into it. Often noting measurements, techniques used by the clothing makers, how an article is worn, and what is signifies, the text nonetheless does not strike one as being technical since it deals with such a colorful subject. Readers will fall into a pattern of looking at the attractive, rich color photographs and occasional illustrations and diagrams as they come, and then going to the text to find what interesting facts and points the author has on the items the men and women are wearing. Many readers will try to put their growing knowledge to work to guess social status of the individuals shown and the meanings of their accouterments. The descriptive captions should not be glossed over either. The color photo of one man notes that his "sword denotes his royal lineage, the silk tie [around it] signifying that it is carried in peace." But one of the countless bits of social and cultural lore one learns is the significance of turbans in family relationships and relationships with others. A four-page glossary of hundreds of terms testifies to the complexity of Indian clothing. This is a remarkable work with its generous fund of knowledge, skilled organization, and magnetic appearance.

Wonderful and Imaginative Book for everyone's enjoyment

This book is a beautifully drawn, well written story that everyone can enjoy. The pictures are fun, and free-flowing with lots of add-ins that children and adults like to find. The story is well written and does have a point, which is always nice in a children's book. The basic idea of this book is for Festus to plant his potato garden, the trouble he has, whom is to really blame and how to get out of the festuring problems. His cat Mercury gives it a light-hearted merry feel.

The reason this book and the rest of the series are hard to find is because is was published through a self-pulishing firm. That means he paid to have it printed. I would highly recommend it to parents, I do feel that the continuing enjoyment my son (4.5) gets from them and that I still enjoy reading them, is worth the price (at least the ones priced around $30.00).

On a side note, if you are a fan of Bill Peet, you will enjoy this series, while not being similar necessarily in style or story-telling, the essence of work is.

This book delivers! It seems exhaustive in the amount and depth of the services and locations listed. I have contacted a few already and have found genuine people at the other end that want to help me find parts for my Mercury Comet. I would recommend this book to all who are restoring, customizing or just fixing up a daily driver. It is an invaluable addition to my resources.

A Man After My Own Heart
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-06
I have been in love with George Raft from the moment I first saw him in "Manpower", and this book just made me love him more!
His story is poignant because he seemed to have been a man who truly had so much to give to the right woman but was barred from that all his life because of a greedy, clutching estranged wife.

I loved reading his own accounts of his life, his loves, his behind-the-scene accounts during the making of his films.

I admired the fact that he was such a gentleman, never resorting to bad-mouthing those who were his antagonists. The man had class with a capital "C". He did not turn his back on his friends, many of whom were big names in organized crime, and stood by them, in spite of Hollywood's trepidation and warnings. He was a true man who stood by his own code.

His sexual prowess was intriguing reading, but was delightfully pretty much what I would have suspected, as his physical chemistry has always been so overpowering and alluring. The accounts of his intimate encounters and relationships were exactly as my fantasies had always portayed them to be.

I relished the author's insight and portrait of what made George Raft click---his surprising lack of self esteem which pursued him all his life. His amazing generosity and sensitive heart. His gritty determination and ability for survival during a crazy days of 20's; his screen image cementing during the 30's into the most mermorable "gangster" of all time; his leading man image of the 40's; and his gradual decline afterwards.

If you are a George Raft fan (and even if you're not) this biography is fantastic reading and an intimate portrait of one of the sexiest, vital and sensitive actors in film history.

George Raft Biography is Insightful

The biography, although not totally accurate when reciting Raft's early existency (no Raft biography is), is heartfelt and insightful in explaining the motivations behind one of the most interesting figures of the 21st century. You see George Raft as he was, a sweet, charming "gentle"-man who's rise to fame was fueled by feelings of inadequacy. Mr. Yablonsky's has done a masterful job in bring the real George Raft to life; in contrast to the mean-spirited attempt by James Robert Parish. Please visit the George Raft Family and Friends Memorial Website to share your feelings and sights about George Raft.
