Road to Confusion

This book is definitely not for beginnings. The authors have put too many technical words into each sentence, which makes for much confusion. There are many fine books out there for those who are beginning to learn about automobiles. This is not one of them.

Very great book for automotive.

This book has alot of good information about automotive technology. It has the basics and foundation to get you started in your career as a technician or if your just curious about the industry in general. Great book.

Excellent textbook that complements a shop manual perfectly

I've always been interested in cars but never knew very much about what was under the hood other than the very basics. All I'd previously done to my cars is top off any fluids, change burned out bulbs and change flat tires. So, I finally decided to learn about cars and do some maintenance myself which led to this book. It took me a full year to read completely (maybe 2 months actually reading) but with a new baby and a move to a new house mixed in, I think I did pretty well! I was very serious about learning and that is almost a requirement as this book is very detailed and needs to be studied in many areas to really understand the concepts, especially if you have nothing else to go on.

This is a multi-semester text book intended for students in an auto shop class that covers all automotive systems from engine internals to wiring to air conditioning. Everything is covered in detail with multiple designs of components covered where appropriate.

My only complaints are that many times the text references figures that are on the next page so there's a lot of flipping back and forth. Also, some illustrations are a little difficult to make out to really visualize a complex part while some exploded views (many direct from manufacturers) are so overly detailed that the important information discussed in the text is lost.

These are small gripes though as the few gaps left from a few sections with bad drawings can be supplemented with an internet image or animation from sites like howstuffworks.com. These really help with things like differentials and transmissions.

Otherwise, armed with the knowledge in this book you will have no problem understanding any shop manual and doing most auto maintenance yourself. Where the Haynes manual you buy at the auto parts store goes over your specific car and what bolts to loosen to fix whatever and the torque required when you bolt it back together, this book goes into much more detail on all systems in a more general but complete way. It doesn't assume you know any of the basics. The layout is pretty good too. Things are broken up so you don't have a lot of very detailed chapters all bunched up like engine internals, carburetors and transmissions. They are seperated by chapters like Tool identification and use, electricity fundamentals and wheel alignment. The best part is how everything builds on previous chapters or sections. For example, the engine internals section starts with just a piston in a cylinder, then they add valves, then cooling, then timing for those valves, etc until all the major components are added to the final engine drawing.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It's obviously a mature work (previous edition copyrights go back to 1963!) and I can't see much that can be improved. So buy this book, a service manual for your car, a jack and some tools from Sears and do your own work and be able to knowledgeably discuss more complex procedures with your mechanic when it comes to that. Also find a forum on the internet for your car (such as automotiveforums.com) for help troubleshooting.

I'm 42 and going through a divorce right now. My wife cheated on me. I have been out of the dating game for over 20 years and didn't know where to start. I am happy to say over the past few weekends using your advice and tips, I've met some of the most attractive women, and been on dates with two of them. Both want me to go out with them again! Thank you!

This book has a very original approach to the whole process of a pick-up. It will help you be more attractive, spontaneous, confident, and have a higher social value! It will teach you how to have a great conversation with a girl and how to connect with her without using prelearned patterns and tricks. You will learn how to touch a girl and control sexual tension that will lead to a kiss, and more...

But those are just a few things... Buy the book, read it and you will become a better person, that is a better MAN in more ways than one!!!

Amazing! So simple and totally effective.

I have never been good with women. Just the thought of talking to them would make me freeze up. I never knew what to say to them.

But now, after learning all the powerful techniques from this book, I finally know how women think, and exactly how to seduce them just the way they want to be seduced but will never tell a man!

I always knew I was doing something wrong in this area, but I never knew just how many things men assume will impress women but instead it does the exact opposite!

Thanks to this great book I'm getting a LOT more dates. And my sex life is not bad either. Not bad at all! ;-)

Fabulous! Something we really needed!

I can say that the information that is provided is simply marvelous. After following the advice, I have found that I am much more relaxed when approaching women and I can tell that this has taken my confidence to another level...I always thought that it should be spontaneous. Big mistake. And this has cost me alot over the years. I wish I had gotten this material 10 yrs ago. Things would have gone a lot differently in my life. And this is why I believe this material is priceless. It has taught me how to relax. It has reminded me of the importance of planning and of taking action. Right now, my whole attitude has been transformed and I am seeing the benefits of it everyday. Highly Recommended!

This is a book any beginner in miniature art should read. Its inspirational, informative and very interesting. There are many pictures in the book which also serves as a visual treat to stimulate and evoke the artist in anybody. The author, Jane Freeman of this book has not only elevated making miniatures as a pure art form but sanctified its stature with her amazing creations. While reading this book, I noticed one thing very special about this book, the author has a talent which lures us to look at everything in life with the creative eye.

Not your average dollshouse book...

...and this is the true strength of the book. Jane Freeman's work reflects her classically trained background and does not sit well with the often twee world of miniature 'craft'. If anyone can bring miniatures out of its association with children's toys, Freeman can! This book showcases the work of Freeman and other artists who work in miniature form in brilliant photographic colour and quality on every page- not a single, irritating and pointless black and white among them. I turn to this book when I feel the need to be 'freed' from the conventions of miniatures, namely expense, scale, and realism in the traditional sense of the term. Freeman's talent for producing the essence of what is most important in life is second to none in the miniatures world, and her flair for finding alternative uses for rubbish is ingenious. My work took quite a different turn after the influence of Freeman, from heirloom creations of the Australian past, to scenes of my own life which actively engages the onlooker by requiring their interpretation. This was my most expensive miniatures book purchase, and one of the most valuable. Highly recommended.

O'Toole Amazing life in His Own Delightful Words
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-25
I want Peter O'Toole to scrible my life story. One of our grandest actors turns out to be a remarkable writer. If he was writing about any other person than himself, this would be a great book; a most enjoyable reading experience; and a primer in how to tell the story of a larger than life person. As it happens, Peter O'Toole, the exceptional writer, is writing about Peter O'Toole, the peerless actor.

And this is Volume Two! Do grab the first book, "Loitering With Intent: The Child." It is not only a fascinating story of the very early years of O'Toole's boyhood in Ireland, it is also a personal account of the world plunging into the chaos of the 1930s that became World War II.

Read them both...preferasbly in order. And pray Mr O'Toole is with us long enough to craft volume three!

Brilliant 2nd. volume of O'Toole's biography.

That O'Toole can write is no surprise to anyone who has seen him act, since--although he is saying others' lines on screen--a pulsing intelligence comes through in his performances. (Brando can't write in SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME, and neither could KATHERINE HEPBURN in her autobiography. As good as they are as actors, they don't suggest eloquence on the screen...despite the quality of the lines they say). But O'Toole is not one of the greatest writers alive. This volume shows that. His writing needs to be more linear. He IS one of the greatest actors alive, however. So I wish he would leave his desk and get in front of a movie camera or on stage instead. I don't believe there is such a thing as a genius actor. But if there is, O'Toole is it (and the only one). There has certainly never been an actor as charismatic (well, maybe Cary Grant. But could Grant have played serious drama as well as light comedy? He never played in a drama that I know of).

The Peter (O'Toole) prescription for a life well lived!

Review Date: 2003-08-26
Who says a great actor has to be a self-absorbed boor with no life or thoughts of his own offstage or off-camera? This second installment of noted actor O'Toole's autobiography brims over with vitality, quirky charm, and loving reminiscences of fellow drama school students, teachers, and a host of other fascinating souls. O'Toole is clearly one of those people who makes his own fun, and naturally finds kindred spirits wherever he goes in life. He doesn't choose his friends based on their status or what they can do for him, he just enjoys their company. And how! The myriad, unorthodox ways O'Toole and his pals devise to obtain lodgings, food, semi-clean laundry and other of life's necessities will have you laughing out loud. One of many highlights concerns the delightful, party given to celebrate the final hours of leaky old houseboat, where guests take turns pumping the sea back out even as it sloshes at their ankles. A rip-roaring good time was had by the artist as a young apprentice, and his mates!

Brilliantly written and very funny

O'Toole has a gift for the English language -- you just want to read whole chapters aloud, to enjoy the sound of the words. There are also scores of laugh-out-loud funny anecdotes sprinkled throughout, all told with wry joy. This isn't a typical actor's memoir -- this is way more fun.

I'm 10 years old, and I love Greek mythology. This model was very fun to build, and relieving to finish. There is lots of detail on everything. It is very challenging, and requires patience. A partner (such as a family member or a friend) would help a lot.
In short, this model is excruciating and fun to build, but amazing when finished. I liked it a lot.

Basically a giant keep with walls and towers forming a square, this combines towers and features from all over the early stages of castle building, including partial hordings (castles do have their own jargon). And the drawbridge works! If you want to keep this one around or move it much, glue the groundplates to cardboard or matboard.

This book contains wonderful ideas for a wide range of ages using items found in nature. The crafts are arranged according to the season in which most of the materials will be found. They give alternate places in which to find some materials or replacemant materials. There are great illustrations and very good step by step instructions for creating the items.

Children that have this book available to them and have the help of an interested adult need not be bored any time of the year.

Projects are fun, instructional and varied. Children can learn to enjoy nature, science and make many useful things using this book. Learning filled with fun and excitement could be a subtitle for "Nature Crafts For Kids".

True Crafting Book

Review Date: 2006-05-11
I recently found this book at my local library and and loved it so much that I am looking to add it to my collection. This is not a book filled with cutsie fifteen minute projects that the kids do on their own, rather it is for adults to explore with kids, actually spending time with them.

My children detest most children's crafts; they would much rather create something that gets used in real life. They can hardly wait to try out the cement birdbath, and are already making the pocket sundials. I am overjoyed to see them finally taking joy in crafting. Projects that take time and effort to finish help teach kids to see things through to the end and give them a greater appreciation for the work others put into their creations.

Another great thing about this book is all of the extra information tucked in. There are boxes and pages dedicated to subjects such as types of bark, how to find the north star, and which birds eat which types of food. There are even sections on tracking animals, wind power, rain facts and how seeds travel. The information is interesting enough without over-doing it.

All in all, an excellent rescource for a parent who wants to spend time exploring nature with kids, or for an older youth who likes nature.

peaceful, creative, and attractive

This book combines fairly simple craft projects with an eco-friendly approach. Ideas are divided by season, as the availability of materials will vary, and projects range from animal sanctuaries and feeders to rustic toys and arts. The whole book strives to foster a love of and respect for nature, discussing natural phenomena and facts about the everyday things we know little about. The whole feel of the book really worked for me, and I think imparting this respect for our planet is always a good idea, not only because we have to live here and treat our surroundings well, but because nature has so much to offer us. These ideas make for great shared experiences with a family or class. Great fun, educational, and filled with lovely photos and ideas.

This is indeed the best book I have found todate on building R/C aircraft models. This targets intelligent beginers and takes them through a progression of increasingly complex models , culminating in a scale spitfire. Unlike most other books this book is information rich and not an advertisment for specific R/C products or the great skills and models of the authors buddies. It does a good job pedagogicall in making the reader think and develop his own skills and ingenuity in the process.

Superb book for almost all RC model aircraft builders

This book really shows you page by page how to get the job done. Kelvin Shacklock starts with the basics and takes you page by page through the construction of yet more advanced RC models, finally showing how to build a 1/5 scale Spitfire explaining the different processes as you go. The book is full of illustrations and photographs, so it is very easy to understand the explanations within the text. Personally I read the book while constructing the models using it more as a manual than a theory book. The drawings for the RC models are printed within the book, but I will recommend buying full scale drawings since it can be quite a difficult job enlarging the drawings correctly, although several methods to do so are explained within the book. I recommend this book to all beginners and people who have build a couple of aircrafts and wants to learn some more good building tricks and guidelines. This is the best book on the subject I have read.

Sitting high up on the highest shelf of the tallest bookcase in my family room is an almost real looking, miniature Egyptian sarcophagus. Unbelievably, it's made of paper, glued together by my kids from a little Usborne cutout kit called "Make this Model Egyptian Mummy." I was more than a little skeptical when I ordered it. Boy, was I surprised...

First off, for them (and their mom) this was a highlight of our study of Ancient Egypt.

Second, they (and I) learned a lot about how these things actually looked.

Third, they built it without any adult supervision.

Fourth, they actually got along while doing it.

This is the way homeschool should be.
