We bought this in hopes of being able to fix the heater/defroster, but could not obtain enough information to do that. It is a good general guide, but don't expect detailed information.

Very Informative

This book has been very informative as to keeping my 1987 Celebrity well-maintained. My car now has over 150,000 miles, and it is still running in great shape. The photos and the instructions are respectively very detailed and clear and simple to understand. I would reccommend this book to anyone who wished to get at least ten thousand more miles out of their car for little effort at keeping it maintained.

Not so good, is Haynes slipping??

I have had many Haynes manuals (and Chilton, Clymer, Bentley etc). This one is a little too long in the tooth for my taste. The paper is really cheap, the printing looks like it has been photocopied too many times. Even the pictures which used to be color, are now not just black and white but fuzzy from what looks like, too many copies of copies. I'm sending it back.

Thumbs Down
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-12
This is the worst book I have ever read on NASCAR. It is full of inaccuracies and misspelled words. For example, oil dry is referred to as "oil drop", sprint cars are referred to as "spring cars", etc. The chapter on John Andretti's greatest day in NASCAR focuses on his Indy 500 experience. The Ralph Moody chapter is especially hard to follow as it appears that he author transcribed a taped interview without any editing. It would have been helpful if this book was edited by a knowledgeable racing writer so as not to insult racing fans with a poor attempt at what could have been a great book.

A Great Read!

It is hard to discover the organization of this book. It is very British in orientation and style...a bit off-putting to the American reader. All rh drive cars. My biggest annoyance/complaint with the book is that there are probably 30 color photos of one particular blue Turbo SE Cab. Beautiful car, but it doesn't warrant this much of the book. I recommend Peter Morgan's book (Original Porsche 911) as a better alternative. Better organized, better photos.

Good narrative, overly speedy ending
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-06
Perhaps you've seen the 60s movie The Great Race, which was based on this real-life historical event. The "true story" is much more interesting than Blake Edwards' slapstick-filled concoction. Fenster, who has written extensively about the automobile industry and also written a history of ether (I hear that one's a gas), does a generally fine job in retelling the compelling story of the six international racers that traversed the United States, Siberia, and Europe for six months in 1908. The narrative draws extensively from documents of the day and the participants' own memoirs and recollections. My major complaint is that the book ends much too abruptly. After spending extended periods of time on the harrowing trek through America (which led to calls for an improved road system in the country) and the ordeal of Siberia, Fenster whizzes through the third stage of the race in a handful of pages. Granted, the European leg took place on good roads and thus did not lend itself to tales of near-disaster, but I would like to have heard more about the reactions of the cities along the way.

RACE OF THE CENTURY
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-16
While the author had clearly done a great deal of research on the topic, I felt that the final presentation was rather hasty. In particular, the illustrations were small, of poor quality, without labels and did not identify the subjects.

The author's account of the last leg of the "race" from Vladivostock to Paris while acknowledging that little use had been made of local press seemed to make very little use of Scarfoglio's account or photographs.

The chapter dealing with the start in New York seemed unecessarily gossipy with too little analysis of the historical context of the race in the context of world transportation and the revolution that was taking place.

Nevertheless, there were major achievements to have captured the US newspaper accounts of the race and to have translated Hans Koeppen's book, but I am left with a thirst to know whether it will be published soon in English.

A good read but with a more detailed and better quality presentation of the photographs it would have made for a more collectible book.

Haynes Repair Manuals - Excellent values

Another reviewer gave this book low marks because it was essentially the same as another book. That is a not a bad thing - that is a good thing! I greatly prefer the Haynes repair manuals because they are specific to the car in the book. The Haynes people do a complete tear down on an actual car. You don't get any generic 'stuff' - you get a complete and comprehensive repair manual for the subject car. Good pictures, good procedures, reasonable pricing, comprehensive in treatment (includes electrical diagrams which is very, very nice). I have bought several Haynes manuals over the years and just bought this one for working on my Saturn. I am delighted and can highly recommend this book (and, in fact, all the Haynes manuals).

Misleading Books

I purchased a Haynes and Chilton manual for the same car at the same time. Sometimes pictures from a different angle, different wording that is easier to follow, or helpful hints vary between authors. I did not get what I expected.

Haynes and Chilton are now the same publisher. The pictures even have the same sequence numbers and the verbiage is identical. But the layout is different so a casual observer looking at these books in person might even miss that they are the same though intentionally made to appear different. Or do you have a more logical explanation why identical information has been subjected to differing layouts?

Your site should somehow identify these books as identical or trap the orders and provide the information at that time.

I feel cheated.

If you're looking for an authoratative service manual on your MKI MR2, this is not it. It is better then the Cliton's Corolla/MR2 manual though. The Haynes manual covers only 85-87 MKI's and really concentrates in the 85-86. Anything past the most simple reffers you to a technician.

If your looking a manual that covers your car completely, you'll need to contact Toyota Publishing and purchase a real Service Manual. They are much more expensive, but well worth it.

Better than the Chilton's Manual

Avoid the Chilton's MR2 manual and buy this one first. Chilton's manual covers three different cars and is not explicit enough for the MR2 owners. You may find some useful information in the Chilton's manual, but I think most MR2 owners will be more pleased with this manual.

This single computer CD, with 344 pages of text, is a valuable resource for the racing historian. It contains lists of race winners and series champions for more than 50 active and defunct international, national, and regional racing series. Naturally NASCAR is prominently featured, with results from 21 series such as Modified, Sportsman, Convertible, and Busch North in addition to the three current headline series. Not all NASCAR racing series are included; the old Short Track and short-lived Modified-Special series are among those omitted. Other sanctioning bodies whose winners and champions are tallied include the AAA (back to 1927), American-Canadian Tour, All-Pro, the All-Star League for eastern Modifieds, IMCA, and USAC. Quite a few dirt Late Model tours also have results listed. This CD is not for the casual fan as it contains no narrtive text or pictures, just lists of winners and champions.
