HOW TO BUY A CAR WITHOUT GETTING TAKEN FOR A RIDE

This book provides an "insider's view" of exactly what goes on when auto dealership managers and their salespeople set out to deceive and defraud the public. The author, an attorney who also worked as an auto salesperson and manager for five years, takes the reader step-by-step through the process of victimization from the moment the buyer first enters the dealership until he or she finally walks out--sometimes hours later--"signed, fleeced, and laid away," as the dealers so aptly put it.

These startling revelations will confirm the public's worst fears--from the enticement of false and misleading advertising to the devious machinations of the finance department to the time the buyer goes back for repairs. The reader learns that the confusion, distortion, intimidation, and in many instances actual fraud, are practices condoned and encouraged by management. Mr. Rothman pulls no punches in exposing the secret business policies--many of which are illegal--in order to educate the public to the tricks they will inevitably encounter.

Most importantly, the author hopes (as will the reader) that the information provided will not only help the prospective buyer find his or her way through the mine field of auto dealerships, but will prove to be an impetus for legislative reform that is long overdue.

On the Automobile and America's 20th Century, Nothing Better
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-11
Virtually all serious books on the automobile are, in some form or other, polemics, taking one side or another of the endless cultural wars about the car, treating it as brute villan despoiling the environment, gulping gas, spreading sprawl, destroying mass transit and undermining community character and individual morals, or as the ultimate manifestation of American industrial might and consumer culture, opening up the landscape, freeing the individual to make his own choices, making gracious suburban living and escape from noxious and failed cities possible, and serving as the prideful foundation of American culture. Finch's book is happily different. Written by an author who manages to be a serious lover of car travel (not just cars, an important and oft overlooked distinction), an environmentally aware citizen and a lover of American culture, it is a clear eyed, dispassionate walk through the automobile's role in shaping 20th century America that does not hide any warts but captures fully all the dynamism that the car released into American life. The book is particularly good on how the automobile first liberated an enormously varied manifestation of local responses and then, as it enabled people to venture into new and strange locales, became an enormous force for homogenization of American life (i.e. national chains like MacDonald's replacing local drive-ins, freeways becoming the standard model for roads) as a people sought familiarity and predictability in unknown places. And, for those who grew up in the American West, it captures the space conquering sense the car gives particularly well. As told by Finch, the relation of the auto and Americans began as a love story, but it is now a marriage, one with lots of sex and mutual affection and likely to last, but one that has all the rough spots and smoothed-over incompatibilties of a real marriage as well, most of which are more likely to be endured into the future than resolved. A must read for transportation planners, urbanists, environmentalists and general lovers of American culture. Its insights have not aged at all in the 15 years since its 1992 writing.

How to install ceramic tile, sheet, carpeting, linoleum, wood floors, etc, with profuse illustrations and diagrams and step by step instructions. Easy, precise, very well designed. Vintage, and better than new! Both very useful and collectible for the design and retro flavor. 186 pages, 1975. Scarce book.
Great deal, recommended.

The Best Car Ever...!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-17
The Honda Civic is, in my opinion, one of the best cars that money can buy! Almost thirty years of technical refinement has made the Civic one of the best-selling cars ever. A lot of people will dismiss the Civic as an ordinary econ-car but the fact remains that this car is a testament to practicality and reliability that has served so many families well over the past three decades. Sure, every car serves a purpose; some are designed to go fast, some are designed to get you from A to B with no questions asked. A Civic can do both and still look good in the process. So if you happen to own a first generation Honda Civic, do yourself a favor and purchase this manual, which tends to come from a first-hand perspective. Those Chilton manuals just aren't as in-depth and user-friendly as this here manual. You owe it to yourselves to snatch up and preserve an old Honda Civic which happens to be a staple in the American automobile industry. Not bad for a small car. American car companies take note...

A Great Introduction to Our Brain for Children
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-18
I think it is a great introduction for 9-12 year olds. It is written in a friendly, conversational manner with comic style illustrations. I have been going through this book with my 12, 10 and 8 year olds. We have really enjoyed exploring the many different aspects of our brain.

The book has lots of activities to try; experiments to perform, models to make, riddles to solve... It does not go into much detail in any area. If your child is particulary interested in an aspect of the brain you would need to find other resources.

A fun way to start learning about how our brain works.

Invaluable Tool for Shadetree Mechanics
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-20
It's too bad this book is out of print. It was written after the style of John Muir's classic "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive", and follows the same plain-language explanation of mechanicals and proceedures as Muir's book, with helpful advice along the way like "If you're getting angry at your car, stop for a while." Sound words! Instead of photographs to accompany the text, there are extremely clear artist's illustrations which, in my opinion, surpass most photos that appear in manuals of this type. A very worthwhile book to have for any owner of an old Datsun/Nissan, and one which did in fact keep my '72 1600 Pickup alive for many years. These are still in stock at some Nissan dealership parts counters.

The comprehesive guide.

Review Date: 2007-09-02
I wanted a good book on modifying cars and this is what I needed.Yet another book in the "Motorbooks workshop" series so you know its going to be good. Its all about bringing any car from the basic model to the muscle car variants up to date.

Plenty of sound advice from what to consider, planning your project, bodywork, interior, long engine blocks, drive train, chassis and so much. This book tells you what you need to know and why.It doesnt get any better than this.Even though this book is quite thorough it still could have done with several more pages.

Its a great book.Highly recommended.
