I found this book to be extremely helpful in explaining the physical properties of light and how these properties interact on different surfaces. The book helped me develop a knowledge of light control and how to put that knowledge to work in my photography.

This book is a required text for my Commerical 1 photo class, and what a great book it is! I love how it assumes that you know the basics plus, and uses terms that aren't novice level. This book should be in every pro photographer's library, very well written, loads of examples and real world lighting techniques.
What does this have to do with "strobists"?

I bought this book on Strobist (aka David Hobby) recommendation (featured in his thousand-users-per-day site).
Ok, it's about lighting reflective, translucent and other difficult subjects. But everything is supposed to be done in a STUDIO setting. What does this have to do with the "strobist ideology" (using small remote flashes for photography)?
You do need an expensive array of studio gear to make the best out of the examples and diagrams presented (even a view camera is proposed in photographing reflective objects!). And I'm serious. How can you judge the reflection of a black label over a reflective cd case without modeling lights? With "chimping"? How can you light appropriately a varnished wooden box to show texture as demostrated in the book without flags, gobos and large softboxes? With straw grids?
But, let's be real here! Much of this book's publicity is owned to David Hobby and the "strobist" crowd. But if you consider yourself a "strobist" you can learn much more by reading the articles in the strobist site. Or buy a different book. Maybe the one DH is writing right now ;)

I read this book in three days really, I couldn't put it down. The book is the best around for every detail in trying to prepare a documentary. It describes how, why, when, and what types of equipment to use for your projects in a professional way. It also tells you how you can save money and get help from around you to fund your documentary. This book explains how to be no, low, or high budget and still produce a professional result. I can say that I now have a down and dirty attitude from reading from a guerilla style way of shooting films. "GET THE BOOK NOW"

This might be the best "quick start" guide you're likely to find on any subject.
Anthony Artis' knows video and he knows how to teach. More important, he knows how to get even a rank beginner out into the field and started shooting video. Artis' writing is sharp, clear, direct and street-wise with a touch of warmth and humor. Reading "Shut Up and Shoot" is like a long conversation with a smart friend who knows all about how to shoot video.
If you're already an experienced shooter, read this book anyway. Artis will make you a better shooter than you are now.

I bought this guide for my 14 year old son who made his first documentary 'One Light' without any experience or knowledge at 13. He wants a bit more professional production this time in a small budget and after spending a lot of time looking for a reasonable Film making camps for teens we resorted to self learning for him and came across this guide and I am very happy about it.
He has learnt quite a bit from it. I think it is a great beginer's reference guide and covers almost all aspects of DIY project. It is simple enough for him to read and incorporate the pointers for his next production plan.
This guide could be supplemented with another book that covers developing story and plot in more depth.

This book is written for intermediate Maya artists and it begins by covering some basic skills. In addition to lighting and texturing it goes on to cover a lot of valuable techniques. Since textures and lighting require good rendering setups, the author explains raytracing, mental ray, global illumination and HDRI. Those subjects are covered in more detail in other books but the author goes a long way in introducing them. Overall, it's a great way to advance your skills.

The companion CD comes with Maya 7 Personal Learning. (The key reason I wanted this book.)
You can't install the software, because it requires a software key.
The link provided to obtain the software key doesn't work.
It brings you to the download page for Maya 8.5 PLE. Maya 8.5 requires Windows XP or MAC OX X. (I'm on Windows 2000, bummer for me, eh?)
Maya moved from Alias to Autodesk.
Basically, this book provides some helpful theory. General theory you could apply to several different software packages. Also, good for improving photography techniques.

I had certain expectations when I chose this book and I found that it lived up to almost all expectations I had. This book gives you an overview of a large range of Maya's texturing and lighting utility nodes and it explains to the reader all their individual attributes. At the end of each chapter useful tips and tricks are explored in the form of step-by-step tutorials - from lighting to texturing and rendering techniques. One chapter is devoted entirely to Maya's lighs, another to only 2D texturing nodes, a third to 3D texturing nodes, and so on.
It is a good book for people who have already some experience in using Maya and want to broaden their knowledge.
That said the book contains 13 topical chapters plus a 14th chapter filled with "additional techniques". However, the last three chapters (12-14) can only be found as PDF files on the accompanying CD. The printed book itself finishes with chapter 11. The book could also do with an update to bring it in line with the extensive changes to Maya's UI since the release of version 8.5, but if you use your brain a little you can use Maya's online reference to help you locate menus that have been moved or renamed since this book was published.

I bought this manual to help me ugrade from Maya 7.0 to Maya 8.5 and it's become my most prized and relied upon resource. Every tutorial I've gone through has worked perfectly (no missing steps or errors so far), Mr. Lanier writes coherently & well, and each new topic is presented in a straightforward and matter-of-fact fashion.
As a professional Video Game Artist, I've reccommended this manual to our enitire company of 300, and will continue to do so to everyone else. In the past, decent documentation on the finer points of Maya has been elusive, but Mr. Lanier has saved us! I will be adding his other manuals to my library.

I like this book because you can learn how to illuminate a body. I think is a good book, but some of the pictures are bored and they have no force, otherwise it will be a really good book with 5 stars.
Its just a book to know how to lighting, not to see really good pictures, it is by your own.

This is without a doubt my favorite book on nude photography. Its not that it is full of whitty text, or even step by step how to. In fact, to recreate the look of some of these images will require some practice and patience. What I love about this book is how it inspries you with every page.
The pictures are top notch, and the diagrams will help you understand how the shot was performed. I've taken with me on shoots when photographing nudes and shown the model what I am trying to achieve. When I'm in the mood to just flip through a book on photography, this is the one I grab. If I have a shoot sceduled, I flip through to gleam ideas.
If you shoot nudes, want to shoot nudes, or just like looking at classy well thought out nude photography, you have got to buy this book.

Special Effects is THE BEST book you could wish for on the subject. I have a shelf full of old, an mostly inaccurate books about special effects, but with this new book I could throw the rest away. Also, don't bother with magazines like Cinefex anymore, which are very dry and heavy going. this book is a pleasure to read and has interviews with everyone who is important in the business. There are hundreds of cool photos as well which makes it very good value. Anyone who works in special effects, or is just interested in the movies should read this book. Congratulations to the author Mr Rickitt who has condensed 100 years of movie magic into a single lavish book. Dont take my word for it - BUY IT!

Yes there is great history and education in here, but the mass of photographs tells a truly beautiful tale. The artists illustrated here are for the most part the true pioneers of creating magic on film. Going into a project with truly no proven technique must have been terrifying and adrenaline pumping. Our techniques have greatly improved but since the advent of fully cg fx, the pioneering aspect is minimal. It is very well written but I can't call it a page turner since I spent so much time staring at the pictures. Great for fans and professionals alike.

PLEASE REPRINT THIS BOOK and ideally, make a softback edition at a price my kids can better afford. THANKS!

This wonderful book, covering all the major areas in lighting, in enough detail to give a solid grounding. w
While it may appear a little too technical for the absolute beginner, it does offer a solid base in knowledge for those with a little experiance wanting to expand their knowledge, and take away plenty of ideas with which they can put to trial on future set's.
If your looking to become a cinematographer; but feel there are gaps in your knowledge, get this book. I believe it to be a must have.

I got two of these and gave them as gifts to my mother and mother in law for Christmas. Both of them were thrilled. The book is beautiful and still easy to read, even with all of the illustrations, most of which are in the middle of it.

This is a wonderful family bible! What a value! It is beautifully constructed and the pages have gorgeous artwork by Thomas Kincaid. The style of the writing is easily understandable, even by children. There are special "family memory" sections on special events and even difficult ones, and how the family got through them together. I gave one of these bibles to my daughter and son-in-law as part of their wedding presents, and when my other daughter saw the bible, she asked for one too. I would
unequivocally recommend this bible to anyone as a gift that will be treasured for many years.

I Love all of Shmuley's books. He does NOT give you the "Jewish way" he gives you the human way of doing things. He does not "preach" to you but makes you realize there is a better/different way. I will continue to purchase and take to heart his books and advice.

This was such a quick read and the author has a great down to earth style to his writing. I was very humbled by this book. I think it gives such excellent ideas about living your best life and creating the same for your children. I'm going to 4 baby showers this year and I will be giving this book as a present to every one of the moms!

This is a great and a MUST read! He does have religious references-- after all he is a Rabbi-- but, if you take his religious references as just that, an example, he has a great message of intregity.

This book offers students a great introduction to the world of lighting design. It contains a logical path through this design process while giving the reader a sufficient amount of examples, pictures, etc. along the way. Having used this text myself, I feel it was an excellent course book and I am confident it will be a useful reference to have in the future.

Joanne Victoria gives her readers both tools and wisdom to light their paths. As I worked through her book, l immediately had new clarity about where to focus my energies. I also came away with invaluable knowledge regarding seemingly innocent situations, which were draining me and not serving my path. I highly recommend this book.

Lighting Your Path! How to Create the Life You Want is not just another self-help book. It is so powerful it should be in your hands right now. It can create magic in your life if you put into practice the simple but compelling techniques provided by author Joanne Victoria.
My expertise is teaching youth preservation techniques, but I have found that people often can't accomplish their anti-aging goals because they don't have the specific tools and expertise to help make necessary changes. Lighting Your Path! How to Creat the Life You Want provides the "power tools" that will help you achieve the life and the future you really want. It's easy to understand, super easy to follow, in language you can understand - no complicated "psycho-babble" to confuse you.
The author gives case histories of people bogged down and paralyzed by their past and their inability to see what they are doing to sabotage themselves. Without a doubt, you will find something of yourself in each of the cases. The author then explains how you can get past similar self-defeating lifestyle choices, mental roadblocks and past conditioning that's literally keeping you in bondage.
If you are at mid-life (or any stage of life) and think your future is written in stone (and you are not happy about it), this book will open your mind and give you the motivation and step-by-step guidance to make the changes you want. It will work if you truly want to rocket into the life you've always dreamed of but were too afraid to try, or didn't know how to go for it. All the help and motivation you will ever need is in Lighting Your Path! How to Create the Life You Want.

Lighting your path talked to me on many levels. On the surface there are some tools that obviously help me create the life I want sprinkled with some deep knowledge of living the life I want. I keep this book with me and refer to it daily because even after you've read it you can pick it up and go to any page to remind yourself that you can live a life worth living. Thankyou JoAnne for this little jem.
