A British Book

This book is truly superb - and an excellent encyclopedia, filled with tons of useful information. However, I must say don't forget this is a British book. Therefore, you will see references to British Pounds and U.S. Dollars. This is not really a problem, except when you are looking up a specific piece of furniture, which may have a different name in England. That said, I doubt most people will even notice the difference - so, not to worry - just something to keep in mind. I definitely recommend it -the images are incredible and all in color, filling every page cover to cover. It is the best book I've ever seen on antiques. In addition, I bought it at my local bookstore and paid $80.

Well worth the price!

SImply put - perfect

I have been in the O.N. house and have contributed a few pieces to the collection of Michael and Gabriele Boyd. To me, it is the perfect house in design and functionality. The collection of early industrial design to mid century modern or simply put - from Breuer to Prouve and Eames. This book describes one of the best modern collections worldwide and offers pieces that any museum can envy along with the house that frees your spirit of unuseful clutter and lets you create. The house and functionality is in detail and written I invite anyone to enjoy this book for it is the best pictured private collection in a truly deserving setting. The effort and determination of M & G Boyd to renovate the O.N. house have paid off and as the book shows, they deserve every credit imaginable for it. What a house and outstanding modern collection. This book is a must have for any collector of modern industrial design, architectual design and good taste. Enough said... Just buy it and enjoy.
Thank you for the book Michael & Gabriele. -

Make beautiful dollhouse furniture with this book
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-11
This book contains detailed scale patterns for dozens of 1:12 scale miniature furnishings and toys. Many are scaled replicas of antique furnishings which once stood in the Mott Family home. Others are designs for miniatures seen in their world famous Mott's Miniature Musuem in California.

In the front of the book is a handy guide which reviews hobby tools, woods and glues to use with miniature furniture projects. There is also a beginners section which covers some of the basic miniature wood carving techniques before you get into the projects. Advanced miniaturists can bypass this section.

In the back of the book are 6 pages of full color lithographs which are applied to some of the projects. The original artwork for this colorwork was hand drawn and hand colored by Barbara Mott.

This 1995 release is the second revised edition of the original book first released in 1978.

I can't think when a new decorating book excited me as much as this one. I buy a lot of decorating books, but New Classic Style is so chic yet so helpful all at the same time. The premise, which is carried out stylishly by the photos, involves mixing classic furnishings from all eras and genres to create "personal" style. The book is so what I'm all about and what I see my friends doing. I've never seen a book on how to create your own mix before.

GREAT book for novice decorators.

Attractive stained glass patterns, none of them dorky
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-23
I'm just finishing the first lamp that I've made using a pattern from Northern Shades. Overall, I'm very pleased with the pattern and its instructions -- though I'm glad that I made my *first* lamp with a live teacher demonstrating the techniques.

That's not to say that you're on your own. While the book has only a single photo of each of the 25 lamps, the pictures are large and clear enough for you to get the details. The first part of the book explains the steps in lamp construction, with many black and white photos to demonstrate the process. It might have been daunting if that's all I had, however! (Or maybe I just prefer personal instruction.)

None of the designs are lame, and most of them are really pretty. The lamps range in size from an 8" diameter to 21". It's convenient to have the patterns in full size, too; you don't have to worry about inaccuracies creeping in from photocopies.

Most of all, however, I appreciate the clear shopping list for each lamp; each one is rated for difficulty, has technical specifications (such as all measurements and the number of pieces), and a materials list. You can walk into the glass shop knowning that you need 3.25 sq ft of dark green opal, 1/2 sq ft of light green, and a 2.5" vase cap.

My only caveat -- and it's not really the author's fault -- is that you have to pay attention to the availability of supplies. The lamp I chose called for kite-shaped bevels in a size that is no longer available. I did just fine by cutting kites from textured glass, but I confess that I stamped my foot in frustration, a few times, before I chose that alternative.

Great book, though. Recommended.

Memorable book by underrated author

I read this book months ago; it has stayed in a warm place in my memory for about a year. Browsing through the stacks at Amazon, I come across it and am surprised that only one person has reviewed it. It's well written, it's an interesting insight into a life different from mine in almost every way -- money, geography, religion, vocabulary, etc. Yet my life and this fictional life are still very American. Reading it, learning about a different America from a great Amercain writer, made me a better person. It gets my highest recommendation.

Religion, poverty, and poetry combined in a powerful novel

Glancy is an underratted underknown writer of incredible sensitivity and expression. Her prose is consistently understated, but that doesn't keep it from conveying anguish and complexity in this story of an innocent girl in a gritty landscape. Closest to Kaye Gibbons, but Gibbons is looser. Oprah Oprah, why haven't you read this one???

Outstanding Ideas

I picked this book up hurriedly and found it to be excellent. I have a gift shop that I have displayed some of my crafts that I made and I am unable to keep them in the store for the enjoyment of my customers. Everyone wanted to purchase the terracotta fountains especially. The book is easy to follow that any beginner would be able to do. I could not recommend it more highly.

This book has some wonderful (and beautiful) ideas for your yard and patio. Instructions for making wimsical painted tables, bird feeders from natural materials, fountains from stock terra-cotta, trellises, how to build and decorate birdhouses, how to make windsocks and banners as well as ideas for container gardening, planters, hanging pots, water gardens and more, I think it's a terrific book for do-it-yourself types!

Piero Lissoni could be one of the most prolific, yet understated, designers in Italy - his works abound there, but scarcely receive media attention. Yet his impact on international design is evident everywhere, making PIERO LISSONI an essential acquisition for any library strong in architectural design and modern architecture history - especially European architecture. Lissoni is both a designer and a graphic artist: his title is packed with color photos of the extent of his works, making it a key acquisition for any serious college-level art and architecture collection.
