Exchange student memories

I work with the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program. Students age 15-18 come to the USA to spend the school year and learn our customs, cultures and educational systems. We take them to historical sites, like Wash, DC and points of interest like New York City. Their host families and Rotarians take them to places of interest around the state. We are located in PA so this book is a perfect keepsake for them. The book highlights the wonders of our keystone state and the photos bring back the memories of what they experienced.

Attractive, reasonably priced photo book on the Keystone State.
Irwin, whose photography has appeared in National Geographic, is particularly good in his coverage of the plain people of Lancaster County. Irwin doesn't neglect any part of the state, however. An excellent keepsake for anyone living in or visiting this state.

Even if you're not a Pennsylvanian you'll enjoy leafing through this pictorial celebration of the Keystone State. Enriched with 150 color photos by ace photographer Jerry Irwin this landmark volume offers glimpses of every nook and cranny of a beautiful state.
There are breathtaking views of Pennsylvania Dutch country in autumn with towering trees lit by brilliant oranges and reds. Who would want to miss the battlefields of Gettysburg, an integral part of our nation's history? Picturesque covered bridges in Lehigh County merit attention as do the majestic Poconos and the Appalachian Mountains.
Mr. Irwin's unerring eye captures familiar scenes as well as little known treasures found in historic buildings and landmarks.
In addition, photos are accompanied by succinct captions which enhance the viewers experience. "Our Pennsylvania" is a volume to treasure and return to again and again.

F&F good as always...

Clearly THE book for the beginner and intermediate collector. It gives an excellent overview of each type of note (Nationals, Silver Certs, etc.) as well brief descriptions of each note within each type. A great way to learn the history associated with the engravings on U.S. paper currency from the Civil War (1861) to the present.

And, of course, the Friedberg numbering scheme is the standard method of referencing notes among collectors and dealers alike.

It should be noted however, that the values given for the notes are very rough approximations (very conservative). This is especially true for the UNC grade(MS60-64). There are no values for GEM notes (MS65+).

If you're looking for a comprehensive note reference with ball park values, this book is for you.

Great book for a beginner or Advanced U.S Currency collector

I find this is a great book for any collector of U.S. Currency. Crisp photos of just about EVERY diff Note 1861-Current (Very Nice color section in the back) and up-to-date pricing in the fast changing currency market. Also great for keeping track of your own collection. Definately Recommended!

A must have for the Currency Collector.

This is the standard reference work on United States Currency for the collector. While the prices given are pretty much obsolete in the volatile currency market, the Friedberg Numbering system is universally used by dealers and collectors alike. If you are considering participation in floor or online auctions, you cannot tell what you are bidding on without this book, as all notes will be listed by FR#. Well worth the investment!

Outstanding Guide & Catalog

This book is a must-have for the serious US currency collector, along with the Standard Catalog, 17th edition. Together they provide a great catalog and price guide for US Treasury issues. There are good sections on fractionals and Confederate currency, and decent treatment of colonials. No obsoletes or military payment certificates. The black and white photos are quite a bit larger than those in the Standard Catalog. The color pictures in the back are a nice touch, but the printing is not the world's greatest -- many of the reds come out as pinks, the greens look almost fluorescent, etc.

There aren't many anecdotes or interesting bits of trivia, but as a guide and catalog it is top notch.

Thank you for producing such a wonderful book. It has been by far the best and most helpful book on Pendelfin.

It will certainly make it a lot easier to collect the more rarer rabbits as I now know what to look for.

It might be nice to have a folder or something similar to store records of rabbits bought and the value - that way you can just add updates when rabbits are introduced rather than having some information stored in Issue 1 and the rest in Issue 2.

I can't wait for issue 2!!!

Excellent No Collector of Pendelfin should be with out !!!!!

Fascinating clutter . . .

One of the odder well-written books I've read in a long while. Author Schaffert crafts sentences in a beguiling way, piling up details and creating situations with the logic of dreams, propelling the reader along, until the book becomes a lot like getting lost in a fun house. And looking back at vantage points in the narrative, it doesn't all make a lot of sense. The Rollow Sisters (Mabel, not her real name; and Lily) don't have "phantom limbs" except in some metaphorical sense that's left to the reader to puzzle out. Abandoned by every member of their family (one of them a suicide) the two young women live in a house crammed with mostly worthless junk for sale, which clutters the story itself in fascinating detail.

Meanwhile, their heads are filled with another kind of clutter - attitudes, poses, bits of storylines from movies, magazines, tabloids, and a dozen other forms of popular culture. The two of them inhabit a world of imagination in a suspended state of arrested development. One of them suddenly leaves with a boyfriend in search of their mother. The other becomes strangely involved with a grieving family of brothers. Recommended for readers who like out of the ordinary and not so obvious fiction that keeps you guessing how all the pieces will eventually fit together.

Great Debute!

Recalling Historic Cunard Liners

Review Date: 2000-04-05
As a source of both information and rare photographs, few books can equal Picture History of the Cunard Line. This book includes many little known facts about some of the most famous ships in maritime history. Yet,while it recalls the careers of the better known Cunarders,it also addresses many of the Companies less remembered ships. The great Aquitania who's lengthy term of service included duties throughout both World Wars is finally given the attention it deserves. Virtually all of the companies intermediate steamers are reviewed as well. Because this book encompasses so many of Cunards' ships; and because it presents over 180 of the best photographs ever published on this subject, it should be a treasured addition to any collection. I highly recommend it to all readers particularly those with just a general interest in the subject.

Love, Love, LOVE this book! The photography is awesome! Gives some good testing methods to identify which type of plastic. When I was reading the book, I discovered I personally have several pieces in my own collection that were illustrated. And no, they're not worth hundreds or thousands but rather just a mear $20, but I'm happy just the same. :-)

SIMPLY FABULOUS

Review Date: 2006-07-01
There are several things about this book that puts it in a superior catagory. It's not only the photography, which is stunning, but the in depth information throughout the entire book. Different plastics were always a source of confusion for me but the explaination of just what the plastic was with a photo next to it taught me so much.

I agree with John's (reviewer below) assessment of pricing. I believe he was referring to self-serving pricing of which some authors are guilty. These prices are realistic and from what I see in the market place, prices that people are paying. This book has taught me to do my research.

The book is beautiful, well thought out and extremely well written. A must in the library of any serious bakelite or vintage plastic collector.

I bought this book because I wanted to know something more about bangles, which I love and have been collecting for a while. I always wonder if I am being over-charged or "told a tale" about a bracelet from dealers at flea markets I go to or in antique stores. After reading this book, I can ask intelligent questions and have found that I am treated with so much more respect. In addition, the pictures are gorgeous. I actually leave the book out as a coffee table book when I am not using it.

FANTASTIC PLASTIC

Finally, a concise book on the identification of all the plastic bangles out there. As a dealer, I am always trying to explain to my customers how to differentiate between one bangle and another. Now I just tell them to buy the book. The pictures alone speak a thousand words.

Would I agree that there is an area of subjectiveness regarding pricing? Absolutely. But there is also a realistic price or perception as to what people see in a piece. In my experience, people are only willing to pay what they believe is a piece's value. Anyone can put a $500 price tag on a Diane Von Furstenberg bracelet, but that doesn't mean that it will sell.

As a dealer, I'd rather my customers have a realistic price guide as opposed to a self-serving "off the charts" price. All in all, I found the book to be helpful, exceptionally well layed out, beautiful in presentation, and worth every penny.

There's a living quality to the photos in this book, most of which are pictures of the land. A few photos of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness add the city sense but even those crawl to life with nature all about each picture.

The title may be Portrait of Scotland but the land is alive in this book.
Each page conjures a sense of the romance that the very name of Scotland invokes.

Overall, a very well researched book by Mr. Pope and Mr. Whebbe. This book does not cover all wrestling collectibles, that would be impossible, however, it does give the collector a good idea of the many areas in wrestling that are out there to collect, although they do have a very in-depth coverage of the action figures and autographs.

The book also covers some of the history of wrestling and is a great book for novices and long-time collectors. There are great photos of some of the older collectibles that I have only heard about. My favorite chapters were the ones on the action figures, trading cards and autographs, which make up a large part of my 15+ year collection.

The prices listed are average, however, the value of the items in this market change so rapidly, that its hard to give a set value on some items. 5 stars to Mr. Pope and Mr. Whebbe for tackling such a huge task.

What a wonderful guide for PY collectors. I am a Rooster and Roses collector and have searched for information on different pieces and their values, but to no avail until the PY/Miyao Fun Kitchen Collectibles Reference & Value Guide was published. I always wondered about the history of the pattern. The book even peeked my interest in the anthropomorphic line of PY. Belinda Euans not only captured my interest with the beautiful photos and the pricing guide, but answered all my questions regarding the origin of the pattern and history of the company. Kudos for a job well done. I recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the PY, UCAGCO, Early Provincial line.

The author of this latest collectible guide, Belinda Euans, did an outstanding job putting this book together. Collectibles are a work of art and knowing as much history as possible makes them even more special. I was delighted to find that this book not only contains beautiful, colorful pictures of these special, whimsical, and unique collectibles, it also includes a comprehensive section including the history of the Miyawo Company and distributors. I especially enjoyed the photographs of the Miyajima family, WWII, and the factory then and now. Ever wonder why so many ceramic items were produced after the war and how Japanese manufacturers and United States buyers conducted business? Answers to these questions and others can be found in this reference book.

This new, professional guide is very easy to follow. Pictured page after page are a wide variety of treasures from salt and pepper shakers, planters, teapots, wall pockets, vases, plates and more. It will likely keep a reader interested from start to finish and could even leave some collectors desiring more because it's so much fun to look at. I was amazed and surprised to see many items I never knew existed before. I believe many of them cannot be found in any other books on the market and are pictured here for the first time.

I feel collectors and admirers of ceramic kitchen collectibles will wish to add this reference and value guide to their library. I plan on purchasing multiple copies for Christmas presents. Thank you, Belinda, for your efforts and dedication in obtaining this information for interested fellow collectors.
