This gives insight and takes out the mystery to decoding aviation weather. The AIM provides a good explanation, but this book details EVERYTHING with explanations for why things are done as they are.

This book has been superseded by AC 00-45F

This item has had a major update by the FAA, and has been republished by ASA (Aviation Supplies and Academics). Amazon does not yet carry it, although it's been available for several months. The current version, if you want it, is on the FAA web site and is labeled AC 00-45F. The update addresses many of the concerns I expressed in my review of the previous version (below).
______________

The old version, AC 00-45E, was very comprehensive but... This volume looks like the old software manuals that were written by programmers rather than by technical writers. Lots of detail but laid out poorly, and some of the explanations left me thinking, "Huh?"

Unlike Aviation Weather, which was obviously written by people who loved what they were doing, Aviation Weather Services looks like it was written by people who simply wanted to be done with it.

This book is quite clear and systematic in this summary and explanation on the climate model development and design. Very suitable for the undergradute or graduate student to learn.

Not worth it

This book is a very basic introduction to climate modelling. A lot of concepts and few equations. It is a good introductory text but I hoped to find more coding examples (there is only one example and it's in BASIC). But for that amount of money, it is definitely not worth it.

My son - just now five - really enjoyed this book. It shows a boy - William looking out his window as the seasons progress. The pictures are colorful and up-to-date. This book would be enjoyable for parents and kids alike. The flow of this book plus the "cool" pictures make it better than average bedtime reading and the with the weather the way it is these days - expanding your child's weather vocabulary seems like a good idea!

TOO LITTLE HERE
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-11
The basic facts behind Florida's hurricane history are included here. The book is filled with figures and statistics. No storm is left out. Yet much of what is included could probably be found in an internet search. The book is too small to provide much of real value to most readers. Other publications will give the reader more for the money, even if he is interested only in Florida.

A very informative book, a shelf book for all of Florida

Florida Hurricanes and Tropical Storms is a very informative book that will enlighten people in Florida as to the areas most susceptible to hurricanes, the history of hurricanes and the least likely area to be struck. John Williams adds some personal accounts from him and partners that picks an otherwise dry subject for some and makes it a book you don't want to put down. The book needs updating, as it only covers the hurricane season up to 1996, but the pictures and charts are very helpful for the researcher and casual reading alike. Probably the best book on hurricanes dealing specifically with Florida.

Book accurately describes weather encountered in FL. Photos are black/white. Well-written, easily organized. Has chapters on hurricanes, flooding, fires. Also on temperature zones (very accurate) and local climatic differences. Includes historical information on major weather patterns.

Very useful for gardeners identifying plant zones. And excellent for anyone planning on moving to FL and trying to learn about hazards from an unbiased point of view.

Really a wonderful handbook to understand weather in general & FL in particular. Highly recommend it!

We got this book when my son was about 9 months old, he's now 18 months and has worn this book out completely. He absolutely LOVES Get Dressed, Dudley, so much so that he flips through the pages every night and gets excited to see Dudley change his clothes to match the seasons. Im now here to buy another copy of the book to replace the one that is covered in clear duct tape to hold it together. Im actually thinking about getting the rest of the Tiger Tales Dudley collection for him. We definetly recommend this book for toddlers, and we hope you like it as much as my son does.

It's a somewhat fun Q&A with a pig on how he will get dressed depending on the weather. It's probably worth the price but it could have easily been more educational if it had been expanded to include more clothing items, body parts, weather conditions and perhaps activities.

Haunted Weather: Music, Silence and Memory (Five Star Fiction S.)

Fresh, thoughtful and stimulating
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-31
Rather than argue a thesis, Toop's style is the chase down a thread of meaning via the points at which various thoughts and anecdotes cross over. This perfectly suits the nature of his subject matter- the vast, largely uncharted terrain of non-genre-based music, for which a dominant narrative and vocabulary do not yet exist as with, say, rock 'n roll or classical.

The book meditates on, among other things, the boundary between performer and audience, environmental sound and music, improviser and composer, and the role of digital technology in mediating or enhancing these distinctions.

As a journeyman music writer, critic and musician, Toop has spent a lot of his time travelling. This seems to inform his writing style as he is constantly in motion, moving quickly between personal recollections, excerpts from correspondence with diverse musicians, and lengthy quotes from various topically obscure yet philosophically related texts.

These (non-)random stop-overs make the book a slow read, as the reader is left to do a lot of the piecing together. Yet this is part of the pleasure to be found in Toop's writing- like a brilliant but challenging piece of music, the book offers an experience in which the mind of the reader is engaged as more than just a passive receptor of received ideas and emotion.

Beautiful, challenging and nourishing.

I read this upon its UK release in July and still find myself dwelling upon some of the ideas raised. Reading it challenged me to use my ears afresh, and to think about what music can be.

This certain novel has a really complex plot, very many characters, so it is pretty hard to tell if there's a real centre-character in this book because there are so many differnt people that dramatically change the course of happenings. It has a fairly good story but what I was amazed about the most, was the poor ending of the novel and its lack of GREAT humor. To first-time Wodehouse-readers I recommend books like Right Ho Jeeves and The Mating Season.

The Direct Route Pays Off!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-31
In most P.G. Wodehouse stories, the innocents and the not-so-innocents attempt to solve tricky family problems with feats of misdirection and partial truths. The result of these complicated ruses is usually a great deal of unexpected consequences that will tickle almost any funny bone. Heavy Weather is an unusually fine example of this type of story.

Monty Bodkin, who's rolling in dough, must hold a job for a year to win the approval of his fiancee's father. Then the wedding bells can chime. Monty isn't the most helpful fellow, and makes a hash out of his writing for Tiny Tots. He soon uses his uncle's influence a second time to get a new job as private secretary to Clarence, ninth Earl of Emsworth, whose pride and joy is his prize-winning pig, the Empress of Blandings.

This new employment creates much consternation for Sue Brown, who is engaged to marry the jealous Ronnie Fish. Monty and Sue had been engaged earlier, and Sue's afraid that Ronnie won't be able to handle having Monty around. Wedding bells for Sue and Ronnie depend on getting Clarence to release trust funds for Ronnie. There are a few other problems, as well. For example, Sue earns her living as a chorus girl. What will Ronnie's mother, Lady Julia, think?

The key theme of the story is that true love will win out, if the lovers follow their hearts and seize opportunity when it arises. In that way, the end will charm almost anyone . . . much like Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream does.

In most stories like this, you can anticipate how the obstacles will be overcome. Well, Heavy Weather will surprise you, if you are like me. The plot complications and resolution are delightfully adept, acrobatic, and subtle. I felt like I was watching the elephants do their ballet dance again in Fantasia. The contradictions between the messy moments and the final neatness are brilliantly handled!

The conflict between the desire to have a good reputation and the willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed (including cutting all possible corners) is shown off to good effect in Heavy Weather. Developing this point creates questions about what real goodness is, versus assumed goodness from social position and family connections. In fact, inherited intelligence is also questioned for its morality. The more powerful minds in the story tend to use those capabilities to plot for self-advantage, rather than to accomplish anything meaningful for all involved. Those of limited intelligence, by contrast, tend to follow their hearts and try to do the right thing.

Good results follow in this story whenever people are loyal and honor goodness.

What can you accomplish by being loyal and honoring goodness today? And tomorrow?

It should be noted that Midwest book review gives 5 stars to every book they rate. This is a good book on the subject of Sea Anchors and Drogues but is a bit dated in some of the information it presents. It relies heavily on data supplied by the makers of the equipment, thus the assessment of their performance is somewhat skewed.

A superb presentation from a seasoned author

Now in an updated second edition, Heavy Weather Tactics: Using Sea Anchors And Drogues is a straightforward reference and guidebook for anyone charged with the responsibility of sailing a yacht or motor vessel out of sight of land. Covering how deep water and coastal waves behave, how to deploy a sea anchor or drogue, what size drag device is needed for different types of vessels, how to create a quick makeshift sea anchor if needed, and much more, Heavy Weather Tactics is highly recommended for its straightforward, no-nonsense style of presenting very solid information. A superb presentation from a seasoned author who has traveled over 40,000 sea miles in racing and cruising boats.
