This is a great book. It is written in a way that allows it to be read in any order. The editor has explained jargons in a parenthesis next to them when mentioning them for the first time to make sure that the uninitiated are not left in the cold. Suitable for reading for pro as well as newbies.

This book you can use to get a really good picture of what climate modelling really is. You should be somewhat into your studies and not a first year student.
The book covers virtually every topic that is important if you want to build your own climate model.
Do not try this, though; your PC cannot work with all the subsystems that are described in the volume.
Following Schneiders 1982 book this is really guff!

I used this book as a reference to write a position paper on global warming for a graduate course in Environmental Science. Professor Lamb's book is a fascinating account of how climate has impacted human history. Originally published in 1982 the new edition (1995) includes material on global warming, atmospheric pollution, population growth, and implications for future climatic fluctuations. This is a one stop reference.

For grades 6 - 12
Each book in the Our Fragile Planet series focuses on the causes and effects of climate change and human impact on the atmosphere, biosphere, climate, geosphere, the natural environment, hydrosphere, oceans, and polar regions. Each fact-filled book includes photographs, charts, and graphs along with a glossary, an index, and references for further reading. The information found in this series will engage childrenâ(tm)s curiosity and provide them with a sense of stewardship.
This volume focuses on how climate works and the natural and human causes of climate change. It explains how scientists learn about the past and present climate and how scientists predict future climate change. The second section explains the visible effects of climate change and discusses climate change in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Finally, the author discusses a warmer future, explaining the future consequences of global warming and the "tipping point." The last section explains ways to approach the climate change problem. Readers consider the options humans have for responding to this challenge.
This thought-provoking book will make children and adults view our fragile planet in a new way. Written for students in grades 6 through 12, it could also be read by some elementary students. It would also be an excellent reference book for teachers. Teachers using differentiated instruction would find this book very useful.

I have to say that Peter Malone's CLOSE TO THE WIND is a gem! I can see how well he must be at children's books, from the art work and the ways in which he provides snipits of really good information. But this book is also a gem for readers of any age because, with a minimum of presupposition on the reader's part, he sets out everything about the Beaufort scale in the beautiful context of a continued story, accessible to all.
The research is also first rate; everything in the story, and everything implied by the continued increase of wind, is duly amplified by the surrounding commentary and supplemental drawings. I just loved it!
But especially fun for me is a connection which I could not have anticipated. Near the end, when he talks about the few ships from Beaufort's time still in existence, the name CONSTITUTION jumped off the page for me. It is indeed still afloat, and I have been fortunate enough to see it. But, more important, its reconstruction was based on studies by Thomas Gillmer, the designer of MY boat! What is more, I am currently awaiting a copy of Gillmer's book, OLD IRONSIDES, which is the story of that reconstruction. Go figure!

Weather books always have chapters on clouds - but how many books offer stand-alone, in-depth coverage of clouds for the very young in grades 1-3? The 32 pages in The Weather: Clouds hold very large print, very bright photos, and very easy reading for any young child who has an interest in clouds. Ranging from what makes a cloud to rain properties to the different classifications of them, The Weather: Clouds is an easy, informative read.

I purchased Wind, Rain, Clouds and Snow. Wonderful short science books and very easy for young readers. My 5 year old twins love to read their 'science' books. It is difficult to find simple non fiction books for this age group, but these are perfect fit.

As a teacher of three children at home and a former middle school teacher I bought this book. It has been a great addition to our learning. It is a series of hands on activities that are simple, cheap and use a coffee can.
For example, it might tell you how to simulate the rock cycle or how weather erodes rocks using a rock, water, and a coffee can.
The one problem with this book was that it does not have enough ideas. It is very thin. The other problem and directly related to the first is that there might only be one experiment for the rock cycle, one experiment for human body etc. It would be nice to see more lessons.
Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

Another outstanding book of poetry

Following up her successful first book of poetry, author Baird has written more poetry about the weather--in particular, the northern plains weather she knows so well. The language is expressive and precise, but mostly the poems are great fun to read aloud. If you're a teacher, your classroom is sure to find great inspiration from this book. If you're a parent or grandparent, what fun you and your child will have talking about the weather after reading Baird's poems. Illustrator Patrick O'Brien's done another great job of illustrating the weather--a tough job, but he does it very well.
