Accurate Weather Prediction
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-20
Kris Riske presents a method of weather prediction that rivals any meteorological method in use today. The beauty is that you can predict weather for anytime in the future, not just the next three days. Planning a wedding next year, or a camping trip in the Rockies? You can choose the most favorable weather using this book.

This book is probably not for the beginner astrologer. It makes use of a wide variety of techniques that require some seasoning to understand and use properly. The intermediate to advanced astrologer will find a wealth of information about weather charts, including exactly how each planet functions in weather charts.
Example of major storms, drought, hot and cold weather, and amount of precipitation show the reader just how weather charts are constructed and interpreted.

Kris Riske writes in a clear, understandable style. With this book you can use astrology to plan any event that depends on good weather for its success.

Climate -> evolution
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-26
Changes in climate have been important determinants in evolution on Earth. As well as dealing with contemporary climate issues, this reference also describes how data from rocks, ice cores, ocean sediments, etc. is used to deduce the history of the planet's history of climate. This reference gives atmospheric O2 as a percent of present value at 1% at 2 billion years B.P., 10% at 700 million years B.P. and 100% at 350 million years B.P. Ice ages are given at 2.3 billion years B.P., 950 million years B.P., 820 - 730 million years B.P., 640 - 580 million years B.P., brief glaciation at 430 million years B.P. (immediately followed by evolution of land plants), warming of Earth by decrease of reflection sunlight because of plant cover, approx. 300 million years B.P. glaciation probably due to continental drift of largest continents along paths near poles, then warm climate through the Mesozoic and into the Cenozoic until 30 million years B.P. with glaciations periodically until present.

Excellent Resource for Students

Review Date: 2008-02-26
My son needed to do a report on global warming and air pollution. I picked this book up because of its recent publication date. The book is very well done. The information in it is up-to-date and provides many real-world examples. As a student, it engages my son's interest and he even read more of the book than he had to for the purposes of his report! As a parent, I was subjected to many days of "Hey Mom, did you know....." It was cool. I like any science books that can engage kids. This one can.

Most authoritative review of atmospheric science
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-28
This book was written by the worlds no. 1 climate experts: Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen and Thomas Graedel. If anyone still has any misunderstandings about the inner workings of the climate system - especially as part of the Earth's ecosystem at large - he should read this book. Whatever you want to know about the atmosphere - it is in here, be it atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, the ozone-hole problem, the formation of smog, the greenhouse effect, long-term climate evolution, natural versus man-made changes - just everything. This topic concerns us all, since understanding the science behind global environmental change now may well prove to be crucial for the long-term survival of mankind.

The book is not easy, but it is accessible for an informed lay person. At the same time it is a fabulous resource for a graduate student in the field as well. It would be nice to see more textbooks of this calibre on the market. Well done.

Crutzen is THE authority in the field. Ignoring his warning is like driving a car after a mechanic told you that the brakes are not functioning - which is the current course of action.

The Authors have done an excellent job putting together, compiling and sorting the teory related with dispersion modeling.
The Book is written in a clear way to let you go deep and deep on the phenomena of dispersion, and the tools (mathematicals/procedures/etc) are introduced as needed.
The CDRom is an excellent to ilustrate and validate the teory and it let you begin the simulation process in a smooth way.
Excellent Book!

Anyone who reads this book will be touched by its sincerity and blessed by it's message. Anyone who has not read this book should buy it and read it immediately!

Lyrical Simplicity in Big Rain Coming
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-19
Big Rain Coming is the kind of picture book teachers dream about. It deals with a culture and situation unfamiliar to most of us, but these are revealed as natural background, natural characters, natural situations. The one thing Big Rain Coming does not reek of is the 'shove it down your throat' cross-cultural drudge that is found in far too many books written for young children.
Big Rain Coming tells a beautiful story with incredible lyrical simplicity.
As an author, simplicity is the hardest of all to master. Germein has done it beautifully here.
The location, the characters are wonderfully authentic and I know, because I've lived and worked in such places too.
Big Rain Coming is a wonderful book to use when teaching because all children can relate to the feeling of waiting for rain, yet they can compare many aspects of the people's lives to their own and see huge differences as well as the many similarities.
The artwork is beautiful, although I'm not a great fan of Bronwyn Bancroft's work. It is unfortunate that because she is a well-known artist, much of the acclaim for the book has been directed towards the illustrator, and not the author who created this brilliant piece of literature.
It doesn't get any better than this.
