I bought this book for my two grandchildren, age 5, who listened intently throughout the story. We had a good follow-up discussion about flooding and the effects of this weather phenomena, which they had never witnessed. I want them to have an increased interest in science, plus aid them in their reading skills and, as a former English teacher, I think this was an effective book. I was also pleased that it featured a female scientist, as my grandchildren are girls.

My nieces and nephews were gripped from the start--the story of a flood in Vermont. We don't live in a flood area, but this book got them really interested in the topic. I went out and bought the hurricane and tornado books, which they also loved. (We *do* live in tornado country, so that book was especially relevant.) They now read the books on their own, which is just great, since none of them really like to read.

I thought this book was very well-illustrated for young children. The charts and tables and diagrams were easy to understand, and attracted interest in the text. This was an important book for me to read with my grandchildren because we live in New Mexico, where lightning is an almost daily event. As with the Floods book in this series, it features a female scientist and young girls in the illustrations, which really helps my granddaughters to relate to the information. The science is clear. My granddaughters really grasped the concepts, and could even use the book to observe our lightning storms. For example, the books says to close your eyes right after a lightning strike and you can see the pattern of the lightning, in miniature, on your eyelids. It really works!

The kids like all the books in this series--hurricanes, tornadoes and lightning being the favorites. They're easy to read and present the science in a very engaging and friendly way. I like the mix of personal stories and science information, especially.

Gipe has put together a wonderful wind energy reference. I'm currently doing an independent study on wind energy and this book has greatly helped my research to date. Highly recommended!! If you're in to renewable energy in general, I also recommend "Renewable Energy: Power for a Sustainable Future" edited by Godfrey Boyle I believe. I've never found a better resource for renewable energy!

Douglas Florian creates delightful and clever descriptions not only in words that appeal to all the senses but sometimes in the placement of the words on the page to help illustrate the poems. My daughter and I love this book, our favorite of all Mr. Florian's work.

An excellent collection of poems about winter - the joys and woes. A favorite is the poem by the same title, Winter Eyes. Rich language and stunning imagery in a deceptively simple form. I'm sending it to my mother, who recently left Minnesota for New Mexico, she can always have the best of winter with this book.

I loved this book! I read this to several groups of children (3-5 years old) and they were instantly engaged. The children try to guess what's going to happen next, and as each scenario gets wilder and wilder they get into it more and more. This book is written in rhyme and has a cadence perfect for read aloud. The illustrations are laugh-out-loud funny and you'll have as much fun reading this story as seeing your children's reactions to it. Looking forward to more from this author!

stern tells it twice again

Daniel Stern has done it again with this next volume of his "twice told tales," re-visitations of poems and stories and symphonies which he manages to transform into gorgeous fictions. These are not mere dramatizations; they are full metamorphoses. In a hilarious example, the story "A Man of Sorrows and Acquainted with Grief," Stern uses Bach's THE PASSION ACCORDING TO ST. JOHN to leap into, of all things, small-town born-again Christian Texas...as seen from the point-of-view of a Jewish high-school orchestra director who gets pulled over for speeding on the interstate.
The stories also "riff" off of Robert Frost poems, Wallace Stevens' "The Man on the Dump", W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming" and even Borges.
These are stylish and smart, always moving and masterfully composed. Bravo, Stern!

I have known people, highly intelligent individuals, who keep the Weather Channel on in the background throughout their active day. They know something and Kathleen Rooney knows more about this gem on national TV. Read this book, give it as a gift to friends and acquaintances. It is a fun piece of work in a world that badly needs to get back to basics. I assure you, with Ms. Rooney's insights and humor, you will come to appreciate the different personalities and insights of those famed meteorologists.

Although it is surprising to find that modern climate records are less available than records from the 18th century in Jamaica, as a hurricane researcher, I found this work very useful in hinting at muti-century trends in hurricane activity across the western Caribbean. Mike is a very thorough researcher, which is on display throughout this book. Anyone interested in tropical climatology and 18th century Caribbean hurricanes should own this book.

I had the 2001 calendar and it is by far the best weather calendar available. Each day has a significant event in history, each month has a great picture, and inbetween the months there are articles and charts, etc.. If you know a weather geek, this is for him/her. Great gift idea for the skywarn'er in your family.
